President Umaru Yar’Adua has charged African universities to come up with inventions and capacities to tackle the current economic and social problems facing the continent. While declaring the 12th Association of African Universities Conference open in Abuja on Monday, Yar’Adua said the present global financial crisis had worsened the existing economic challenges of Africa. Yar’Adua, who was represented by the Minister of State for Education, Hajia Aishatu Duku, said Nigeria was committed to rapid investment in education and human capital development as one of the government’s seven areas of priority. He said, “We believe that this seven priority sectors have the capacity not only to turn around the economy, but also project us into the group of the world’s leading economies by 2010 with the attendant huge socio-economic benefits to our people. “In line with this commitment, the reforms in the education sector are aimed at ensuring the attainment of acceptable international standards for all. The idea is to evolve a strategic development plan that would promote educational excellence in both teaching and learning in the sciences and the humanities.” Yar’Adua urged African universities to be at the vanguard of “this renewal and restoration” by living up to their expectations of being centres of excellence in generating ideas, as well as in research and inventions. He said these would service the continent’s development needs and prepare the products of the universities to meet the challenges of the reforms and continental development. “To this end, I urge African universities to think above networking. Indeed, no African country or universities in each of the countries can go it alone to address most of the problems afflicting the continent,” he noted. http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art20090505555925 |
A British woman of Nigerian heritage facing trial in Laos on drug charges may escape the death penalty because she is pregnant, according to a Lao government spokesman. According to timesonline.co.uk, Samantha Orobator, 20, was arrested at Wattay Airport in August after allegedly being caught with 680g (1.5lb) of heroin while she was trying to board a plane to Thailand. Human rights groups and Miss Orobator's mother have spoken of their alarm because she has not been able to see a lawyer during her eight months in custody. Normally, anyone found in Laos with more than 500g of heroin faces the death penalty by firing squad. Khenthong Nuanthasing, a Lao government spokesman, said that he believed that the trial - which had been unexpectedly brought forward until sometime this week - would now be postponed until next week "due to the issue that we need a lawyer for her". The Laotian government will provide her with legal counsel, and the Justice Ministry is compiling a list of lawyers from which she will be able to choose, Mr. Khenthong said. The statement, if confirmed, should bring relief to Miss Orobator's supporters. At the weekend Reprieve, a British charity which helps people facing the death penalty, sent Anna Morris, a UK barrister, to Vientiane, the capital of Laos, to seek the appointment of a Laotian lawyer to represent Miss Orobator. Miss Orobator's supporters are also deeply concerned because she appears to have fallen pregnant while in Laos's notorious Phonthong prison. She is believed to be five months pregnant - a fact which may work in her favour. The Dublin-based mother had expressed fears that her daughter would get the death penalty if convicted. Orobator is a student at Trinity College Dublin. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/breaking_news/article01 |

Nigeria's growing film and video production industry is garnering global attention as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, (UNESCO), on Tuesday declared Nollywood as the world's second largest film producer. In a global cinema survey conducted by the global body's Institute of Statistics and released at the UN head office in New York and UNESCO office in Paris, India kept the first position, but Nigeria has now edged out the United States from the second position. The U.S. is now number three after India and Nigeria. Global attention has recently been mounting towards Nollywood with Nigerian films becoming a hot commodity among African-Americans in the U.S. and blacks from the Caribbean countries. Only last month a daily U.S. government bulletin referenced Nollywood as a rising star in the world of film production, paying tribute to the acumen of Nigerian artists and film producers. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/breaking_news/article01 |
Ekiti latest: INEC set to declare Oni governor Baring any last minute changes, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, may have concluded plans to declare Mr. Gbenga Oni of the People’s Democratic party, PDP as Governor of Ekiti State on Tuesday. The plan according to informed sources have been concluded after INEC is alleged to have jerked up voters in Idi-Osi, Oni’s Local Government from 7,000 to 15,000voters to give the embattled former Governor an edge over Dr. Kayode Fayemi of the rival Action Congress, AC. Idi-Osi, according to records from INEC only has 7,000 registered voters. Pointblanknews.com also gathered that INEC is alleged to have also manipulated the results of some local governments in the State where Fayemi is said to be leading, to give Oni an edge ahead of the planned declaration of the PDP candidate as the winner. Sources informed Pointblanknews.com that the Ekiti Resident Commissioner, Mrs. Olusola Adebayo, an alleged mistress of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, after resigning went straight to Abeokuta and met with the former President at the Ota farm where she was advised by the former President to go back to her position. The source said former President Obasanjo had rebuked her for taking steps that are dangerous to the survival of PDP in the South West and had directed her to go back and do all she can to ensure that PDP reclaims the seat of power in Ekiti State. Already, armed soldiers and policemen have been drafted to Ekiti State to quell any mayhem that may break out after the announcement. Inside security sources told Pointblanknews.com that the armed security personnel have been secretly directed to “shoot any trouble maker.” As at the time of filling this report, Vice President Good Luck Jonathan is meeting with former President Obasanjo at the Ota Farm meeting lounge of the former General. Details of the meeting are not yet known but sources say it might not be unconnected with the situation in Ekiti State where the PDP is desperately looking for a victory. http://pointblanknews.com/os1692.html |

The Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola, SAN, has assured the people of the state that his administration is making steady progress in all its ongoing projects, which it is closely monitoring. Skip to next paragraph click to expand image File Governor Babatunde Fashola Fashola, who stated this on Thursday, while addressing newsmen at the end of his inspection tour of projects in Ikeja, Agege and Ifako and Ijaiye Local Government Areas added that he was happy to confirm from his personal assessment that work at most of the project sites were over 90 per cent completion. A statement released by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor, Hakeem Bello, quoted Fashola as saying, ”I am happy to note that a lot of progress has been made from the last time I was here and what is seen now is beyond the 90 per cent mark. We are in the final stages of the process. There is no need to revoke any contract at this stage.” Asked why the 700 days in office of the administration was not being celebrated in the conventional sense but with work, Fashola said the task ahead demanded nothing less. “We are not celebrating 700 days, we are not celebrating anything, there is a lot of work to be done and we use this opportunity to once again give feedback to Lagosians about what is going on in their areas and in areas where they don’t normally traverse as a matter of daily travel and to also know that something is going on in other parts of the state,” the governor was quoted as saying. Fashola said that Lagos State budget had been targeted at sustaining life and alleviating poverty at all levels, declaring that: “As you are constructing, people are also supplying equipment, cement and iron rods. http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art20090502804762

“One of the servants sitting down on the bed of his one room apartment. You can see the entire apartment in this shot.” I can see the entire tiny room but an apartment, hell No! Do you see a bed? Methinks, I can only see one flattened mattress and a few scruffy looking clothes. I can also see one tired, scared looking boy terrified to death. Emaciated and severely depressed, cowering in a corner. What I don't get is why this poor kid's picture had to make the presidential album? Come to think of it, he gets to share space with the likes of Bill Clinton and George Bush or doesn't he? And what's with this "one of our servants, " stuff? I would be ashamed of anyone whose domestic help looked like that! The picture of that boy tells a deep story that goes to the root of the malaise Nigeria is afflicted with; a malaise that flows forth from the kind of leaders that can reduce youths to the type on showing here, courtesy Dare Obasanjo, and please put some drapes on that window! Geez!!!!

The Commissioner said that the planned relocation of the Oko Baba Sawmill is on course, with the Agbowa site approved for the resettlement of its operators already cleared for sand filling and redevelopment with a Memorandum of Understanding already agreed with developers under the Public-Private Partnership model. Abosede said work was progressing on the redevelopment of Tejuosho Market, with the construction of the basement floor and DPC level, as well as the Oyingbo Market which is currently at the sub-structure level, while the development of the Oluwole Market had commenced with the resettlement of the residents, where actual construction had reached the third floor level.
