Believe it or not, when I take public transport here in Africa, I do not reveal I am atheist to the other passengers because I do not want to be blamed if the bus has a mechanical problem or if there is an accident. Seriously. Outside of that I do not deny being atheist if asked.

Suicide is actually a sign of a country's development. Many of the most developed countries have high suicide rates, at least they did until drugs were created to keep people from killing themselves.

There is nothing like cold. "You can have lots of heat, even more heat, super-heat, mega- heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat but we don't have anything called 'cold'. We can hit 458 degrees below zero, which is no heat, but we can't go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold, otherwise we would be able to go
colder than 458. Cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. Because heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, just the absence of it."
somewhere in the classroom.

You are playing a semantic game. Cold is simply the presence of a low temperature, either absolutely or relatively.

Junia:

No you are wrong. There is hot but not cold

No both exist, because we can experience both, and cold also refers to low temperatures.

You don't believe in God because He cannot be proven.
Now, is there such a thing as hot and cold.

Yes there is hot and cold, both in an absolute and a relative sense.

Atheism IS A BELIEF that God doesn't exist. Whether it's in response to religious beliefs or not, it doesn't change what it is. Kindly read more on Atheism, Theism and Agnosticism please to have a better understanding of my point.

I am an agnostic atheist, as are most atheists. Agnostic refers to knowing, and atheist refers to believing. They are different concepts. I do not believe that any god exists but I cannot be certain of that.
Religion / Re: Atheists - What's This Life All About? by onetrack(m): 8:03pm On Mar 20, 2017
Life has no inherent purpose. We are born, we grow up, we do some things, we die. And the next generation does the same thing. Our evolutionary heritage pushes us to do certain things (find a way to eat and have shelter, avoid enemies, have friends, make a family, etc), but there is no force behind it.

I am atheist but I'd call myself an existentialist: life has no inherent meaning but I give my own life meaning and that's good enough for me.

Good Morning Seun,

As much as I admire your courage in exposing the lies and fraud that abound in religious circles spread abroad the land, I am afraid you are also guilty of railing against the living God and His Christ.

Busayo Awomolo (bawomolo) did the same thing you are doing, and the Lord bore with him only for so long, and then sent an executioner to take his life.

Beware Seun, you are filling up the measure of your sins.

One day, you will be humbled, either in mercy when your kneecaps would be broken at the feet of His cross, or you will be humbled in wrath when your body and soul is eternally destroyed in hell.

Just a word of advice for you.

Looks like someone is butthurt this morning. grin grin grin

I don't know what Seun did, but I say to him good job!

Atheist here. Also I have a history background (university).

Jesus was one of several people in the early 1st century who claimed to be the Messiah--a god-sent individual who would rescue the Jews from the Romans and re-establish the kingdom of Israel. Cyrus the Persian 5 centuries earlier had liberated the Hebrews from Babylonian captivity and was honored with the title of Messiah as well.

All of the self-proclaimed Messiahs of the 1st century met violent deaths, including Jesus, before they had the chance to drive the Romans out of Judea, a difficult prospect given the awesome power of the Romans at that time period.

Jesus' disciples then had to face the reality that he was not the Messiah because he had simply been executed by the Romans without much fanfare. This resulted in cognitive dissonance: they could either admit that they had been following a faker, or reinvent the story of the Messiah. It appears that some of them chose the second option, which led to the creation of Christianity.

You see, the early Christians simply changed the interpretation of what the Messiah would do. Instead of bringing about the kingdom of Israel on earth, his kingdom was actually not of this earth, and it was actually through his death that people would enter the heavenly kingdom of Israel. So instead of Jesus' death being the sign of just another failed Messiah, his death actually became the proof for his followers that he was the Messiah. Neat how they did that, isn't it?

In order to convince pagans to accept the new religion, the early Christians had to add some miracles to Jesus' life (virgin birth, resurrection, etc), and also they had to make him vaguely god-like (Trinity), all of which was easily done in the days without video recorders.

Voila! Christianity's origins.

I agree with a lot of what you wrote, and I do not question your right to believe in the god of your choice. However you should be aware of the centuries-long persecution of non-believers at the hands of believers, and even the insults directed at us on this site.

For my part I will continue to question and criticise religion; that is one thing I will not stop doing. However insults directed against other users of this site are inappropriate wherever they come from.

Sorry
This is just plain talk.
The bible disagrees with you
The bible says you have to abandon pornography and masturbation.

So the only way to heaven is to stop sinning? Then Jesus' death on the cross is useless. What happens to a devout and faithful believer who masturbates? Hell or are they forgiven?

Are you a 'faith alone' Christian or a 'faith and good works' Christian?

Religion / Re: Why Qur'an Is A Big Problem For The Atheists, Jews And The Christians by onetrack(m): 10:59am On Feb 17, 2017
I have many books at home. They were all printed somewhere by a publisher and have human authors. It is well known that humans write books and print them and distribute them. I have only seen Qurans that were printed and distributed by humans. by applying Occam's razor I must conclude that the author of the Quran must also be human, as no evidence exists that the author was non-human.

And saying "it is well known that Muhammad could not read or write" does not prove anything. There is a sahih hadith where he asks for paper to write something down. In addition, being illiterate does not mean that one is stupid or unable to observe and create things.

Lilzmalcolm:
Recently, I stumbled across a pitiful post made by a medical doctor, with which he was avowing his views about God.
He made reference to many situations where patients would be on the verge of death, call God, and their call would be unanswered.
Well, it could be a problem to christians, but not to muslims.
Why?
Because we have the recorded sayings of the prophet, known as the hadeeth explaining to us whatever could leave our minds open for a dirt wall to be built around it.

1.The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Call on Allah while having full conviction that He will answer, and realize that Allah does not answer the du’a that proceeds from a heedless, inattentive heart.” [Tirmidhi]

2.the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) taught us that supplications are answered in one of three ways:
[1] by actually giving the thing being asked;
[2] Or by warding off a harm that would have otherwise afflicted the person;
[3] Or as gifts awaiting the person in the next life, which is the best form of du’a being answered. [Musnad Ahmad].

This, is the reason behind the conversion of many from Islaam to atheism, the claim that they were once in a situation of need and God didn't answer his calls, or because he suffered a lot despite the fact that he worships God.
So, they go on and decide that God is not just and therefore does not exist.

Meanwhile, this is against the human sense, why is there a paradise and a hellfire?
There are, so that you may be rewarded for your deeds in this world and your patience when you were tested by God.

Now, by disbelieving in God, does your situation get better?
No, because after the suffering in this world, you believe you die and everything ends?
So, that's just?
It's just that the politicians that stole our money are never rewarded and those that didn't, never rewarded too?
Then, why should they stop stealing?

You have failed to demonstrate that Allah exists, and that paradise and hell exist as well. You have failed to demonstrate that Muhammad was a prophet. You have not provided any method to test empirically the validity of any of your claims.

Therefore what you have written is completely inconsequential and meaningless.

Lol. This is a garden variety argument from ignorance, i.e., we don't know where we came from and we cannot comprehend God, therefore he must exist.

nice one onetrack

His question stems from solipsism(i wonder why he is addressing it to atheists only)
So as a solipsist, the experience of child birth could be taken as projections from the subconscious.

The solipsism philosophy by Descartes is irrelevant to me, if i can't get to the "supposed full consciousness".

Exactly. It is useless debating with anyone who appeals to solipsism because I could then use it to doubt the existence of the very person who is appealing to this, along with whatever he or she claims actually does exist (like some god).
