That doesn't make sense. Why do all your youths from alaigbo come to lagos despite the fact that it is no longer a federal capital? Moreover why do you like to make spurious statements?

I know you want to insult yoruba people which is your prerogative. But please you know lagos is one of the most important cities in Africa and so is under more scrutiny. You cannot compare it to small boys like enugu and anambra

Grandfathers take over scam market

Oshinusi

http://odili.net/news/source/2010/feb/13/512.html

But the news from recent Saturday Sun finding is that the scam world in Lagos has been hijacked lately by old men, grandfathers, who se target can never suspect of nursing any harm.

Many of these men are not less than 60 years, and they parade themselves as responsible elders who their victim would gladly entrust their money in their hands. Their style of operation is to advertise in the newspaper that a certain property is for sale and convince their prey they would refer him to the landlord who in turn would prove with documents that the property belongs to him.

To further deceive their target, they would come in flashy cars and take them to choice restaurant or an arranged home. Immediately the buyer pays the landlord would cease to exist and the estate agent would pose as one also duped by the landlord while heaping the blame on his client for failing to make proper investigation.

Recently, the police cracked tracked down some of these men who for years had successfully duped clients. Some of them have track record of several previous arrests and their agents who are mostly lawyers would come to bail them, while they return to the same business. Among those arrested were, Babatunde Oshinusi (62), Olushola Ajayi (58) and Dele Adebayo. Saturday Sun spoke with some of their victims who explained how they were deceived to part with millions of naira for property that don’t exist.

Ivy Nkanor, a retired civil servant lost N1m to them. Months before the journey into the hands of these men, Ivy who had received her gratuity, decided to move into a better flat. On Monday April 6, 2009, she saw an advert in The Guardian Newspaper announcing a three-bedroom flat at Ilupeju for lease and called the agent.

The agent’s numbers listed in the advert were 08096757290 and 08052834181 for Akinremi Demilade and one Wale respectively. “They actually took me to the apartment at No. 2, Oremeji Street, Ilupeju. I liked the house and took my son there for inspection. We were taken to the so-called landlord, Mr. Olukayode Abisarin with telephone No. 08023137262 at 5B, Abimbola Okunuga Cresent, Ikeja off Harold Shodipo Street on Easter Monday, April 13, 2009.

Abisarin claimed he was the owner of the property at Ilupeju and would ensure it would be completed for living on May 1, 2009. Based on the assurance, I wrote a UBA cheque of N1m in favour of Mr. Abisarin on April 13, 2009. He confirmed he cashed the money the following day.

“Two days after picking the money, the fake landlord rang her and fixed an appointment for a joint inspection of the flat on Sunday, April 19 at 3pm. On the way to the apartment on the appointment day, the fake landlord reneged with the excuse that he was involved in a serious meeting. Since we were close to place, my son and I decided to go ahead to see it.

“After the inspection, we were accosted by a well dressed man who alighted from a jeep that he was the legitimate landlord of the property. On hearing that I had plan for the flat, he advised me to lodge my complaint with the police to recover the money I paid. When the case was referred to the Commander of Area F, the man who rented the house at 5B Abimbola Okunuga, Mr. Tokunbo Olawale where I was duped was arrested. He claimed he had lived there for 13 years but had no knowledge of the dubious act with his property.”

Another victim, Lina Ohazurume, a banker saw another advert on January 10, 2009 in The Guardian Newspaper about a 3-bedroom flat in No. 1 Ramonu Street, Surulere by Moshalashi Bus stop. She alled the agent, Samson on 07090029516 and booked an appointment to meet by him at the AP station close to the house. To further convince her, she was referred to a lawyer called John with phone number No 07090029508 and 07089369034.

When they noticed she could not be convinced that the she is dealing with a genuine agent, they referred her to meet the landlord, Oshinusi, who claimed to be a pastor of Christ Deliverance Apostolic Church and Miracle Centre, 12, Oredapo Street, Shasha Akowonjo. On January 23, they visited the church and met the landlord who just stepped out of the church in suits. He directed them to enter his jeep as he intended to entertain his new tenant.

They took Lina to a restaurant, entertained her, while she issued a cheque of N1.2m which was addressed to the landlord. I had to escort him to Zenith Bank Akowonjo to cash my cheque with an international Passport bearing Oladunjoye Gbadegesin.

“On the same day, his lawyer collected N200,000 cash. On getting to the house I was told that I paid to the wrong person. The story changed that the owner of the house is an Alhaji and a lecturer with Unilag. I called back the Gbadegesin man and he ordered me to come and pick my money back. I rushed back to Zenith bank and they gave me some policemen, we reported the case at Idimu police station and from there we carried a search to the house and nobody was found. Few days after, I got a call from DPO of Idimu inviting me to come and identify the people they arrested.

I was able to identify two of them who were later taken to Panti and many of them were arrested and released. Few months after, I saw the Gbadegesin man (Oshinusi)on the road and arrested him. He spent few days in Panti and was released. Till date the other set never showed up again. Some of the properties recovered from them had already been given back to them and since then I have been going through stress trying to see how I can get him. I sold my car and borrowed to pay that amount only to be duped.”

A recent victim is a widow Mrs. Onwu who deals in industrial spare parts. She was convinced to part with N600,000 before she realized that she was duped. Few weeks before they called her, the group did a thorough investigation into the background of the woman and her family. Weeks later they sent a convoy to console her on the death of her husband who according to their investigation died just recently.

When they visited, they introduced themselves as business partners of her late husband. They gave her gifts promising to assist her should the need arise. So when she received a phone call on the January 13 from one Engineer Emma who claimed to be the H.O.D Maintenance of Port Oil Company in Port Harcourt claiming to be one of those who visited sometime last year, she wasn’t suspicious. The story was that her husband was a contractor with him and he would want her to continue with the business assist her to support her family.

Excited, she agreed to go on with the business. Engineer Emma who is in her late 50s gave Mrs. Onwu a number to contact to assist her to buy some quantity of oil pipe cork which she is to supply. The business Emma encouraged would fetch her millions of naira. “He directed me to Mr. William Oni at Ayobo power plant Iyana Ipaja New Road, Lagos who was to assist me procure the goods. Oni told me that a pack of the product would be sold for N210,000. I paid for two packs and called Emma who promised to meet me at the airport.”

Because of her lack of knowledge in the business, she never knew the cork she paid for is meant for bicycle tyres. The next day, still keeping in touch with Emma she was told to go to the international Airport to meet the person directly involved with the business. When she got to the Airport she met another fraudster who called himself, Dr. James Jonathan. The conman who was dressed in a flowing gown told her that his decision to still do business with her was because her husband performed very well. “I met Dr. Jonathan at the arrival point of the international airport and he took the sample I brought. He took me to a fast food joint where he ordered me to eat whatever I wanted while he inspects the sample product.

After some fiddling on his computer, he said that it was perfect but that he would need four more packs to be able to pay for the supply. Hoping that they were real, I rushed to the bank, withdrew some money and went back to the warehouse to collect about 6 cartons of the product. They kept on demanding till I had sunk about N600,000. My eyes opened when they kept on demanding for more money without coming to see me again.”

Nigerians respect elders

Oshinusi who lives at No. 11 Akorohunfayo street, Fadeyi, Yaba, and has been in the business for two years told Saturday Sun that their age is a capital in the game as the victims never suspect they could be dupes especially with the respect Nigerians have for elders and conceive them as people who would not involve in dubious acts.

He revealed that part of the deal is to hire posh cars and well furnished apartments where they would take their victim. He said: “Because we are not greedy, we spend much on entertainment just to convince our target. We hire clothes and settle the gateman of the property who will ensure that we have unhindered access.”

According to Dele, the adverts are made based on what the landlords who came to their office gave them. “Sometimes, they would come with various addresses and hoping that he is right, we would advertise on their behalf. In other cases we would find an incomplete building and take the number to advertise in the paper. When prospective buyers come, we offer to sell the property very cheap. We later send some of our boys on ground to take the person to the landlord who is part of the syndicate. The job of the landlord is to convince the client”.

He is also expected to refer him to his lawyer who in turn would encourage the buyer to pay. “We do that to create the impression that the sale is genuine by allowing him to do part of the transaction with the purported landlord. If the land is not genuine, as soon as the client pays, the landlord will disappear.”

Onlytruth, I know you can read. Er, Art 55 quoted above refers to the Occupying Power. In case you are ignorant of this fact, let me remind you that when the millions of women and children were being starved, the only occupying force in biafra was the biafran troops. So Art. 55 if respected, should have forced your leader to surrender in order to comply. Guess what, your leader was the one in violation of Art.55 of the Geneva convention, olodo.
Biafra's seaports were ceased and occupied by Nigeria. Nigeria was in effective control of Biafran air spaces which they used to bomb churches, markets and hospitals.

You know, I've been through this useless argument with idiot's' like you before on this nairaland, and frankly you can believe whatever you want. Like I said before, we are in Nigeria and our history is not over yet. Just stop thinking you have a country, because frankly, with such unaddressed genocidal history, it is idiotic to think that Nigeria is a serious country. We are patiently waiting for our opportunity to feed you some of your medicines. It will definitely come one day. My advise to Igbos and eastern minorities is to never forget this history.

Art. 55.
"To the fullest extent of the means available to it, the Occupying Power has the duty of ensuring the food and medical supplies of the population; it should, in particular, bring in the necessary foodstuffs, medical stores and other articles if the resources of the occupied territory are inadequate."

Geneva conventions.

Nigera was the occupying power (they occupied Biafran seaports and air ways) and they blockaded food and medicines, shot at planes evacuating children and bringing food supplies, bombed churches, hospitals and markets. They starved innocent children and weak old people to death. History.  cool
They couldn't win at the war fronts so they had to take cheap "below the belt" shots.

Herein lies the folly of you and your leader.  Biafra was blockaded, your commanders knew fully well that if they didn't surrender immediately over a million children and women  would die, yet they chose not to surrender!  The result was the deaths of all these innocent people and you still refuse to admit that your commander has any culpability.  This is the epitome of denial in the worst sense.  Every reader of your post can see what you've written. I'd recommend that you stop defending the indefensible.  If you had lost a mother, a child, or a wife due to the said starvation, I'm sure your view would be different.

I state categorically that your leader and commanders in addition to the decision makers within the federal troops are squarely responsible for the deaths of these people - and yes Ojukwu and his commanders are culpable as well.
I am yet to see an Igbo family that did not lose any member to your evil actions in Biafra, but that is not what drives folks like me. We are driven by things people like you will never be able to understand. I don't expect you to understand me.

A seige is a legitimate war strategy. It is not the FGs fault that Biafra was not self-sufficient and needed importation to feed it self.
Even outside of war, trade embargoes are used as instrument of influence. The Biafran's had the choice to surrender at any point in time, but instead (admirably though questionable) chose to fight on. Do not blame the consequences of your choice on another.
Here is where most of you are mistaken about this piece of history. I would advise you to go and read the definition of war crimes under the UN charter of 1949. It is illegal under UN war treaty called Geneva conventions to block supply of food and medicine. Even the aboki calling himself ndu_chucks knows this fact. It is not my duty to educate you on the Geneva Conventions of war.
If more powerful countries adopted your line of thinking, this world would have ceased years ago.

My take is that Nigeria was fighting to annihilate or exterminate the eastern region which Gowon claim Nigeria desperately needs to survive.
That is incongruous and highly dubious.

I did not side step your silly question. Blockade is a legitimate war tactic that forces the blockaded army to surrender very quickly. Most sane leaders will surrender immediately and avoid the senseless killing of their people. In the case of biafra, Ojukwu and his commanders put the lives of  hundreds of thousands of children and women at risk and ultimately to waste, while they ran away!

There would have been no starvation if the biafran troops had simply surrendered when they knew there was no other way out.  The Army commanders simply allowed those children and women to starve to death, those commanders including Ojukwu deserve to be charged for war crimes along with their cohorts within the federal troops.
I really don't expect you to see my point, heck you are a Hausa man! So keep deceiving yourself. Approximately 200,000 Biafrans died in combact (Biafran soldiers and combatants ), but about 1.5 million civilians mainly women, the old, and children died from an act you term as a legitimate war strategy. Your foolery knows no bounds.

We know how the majority of our people died in that war and it was not at the war fronts; it was in their homes, markets and churches where they were supposed to be safe.
PoliticsRe: Civil war not against Ndigbo — Gowon by Onlytruth(m): 10:11pm On Feb 14, 2010
The thinking style of people like ndu_chucks is why Nigeria is really a joke. He conveniently side stepped my earlier poser to him about using starvation to defeat Biafra. Has it ever occurred to him and all these Awo apologists that no reasonable Igbo will ever fight for Nigeria against any foreign invader because of this history?

You tell me that you cannot have a successful country without me, yet you support killing me off, what a duplicity!
We ndigbo are not fooled by Gowon's statements. Nigeria will not be a successful country without ndigbo, so the country would rather kill us off by all means. Is that not twisted?  huh Ever wonder why the niger delta can still be wiped off for oil today?

Like I said earlier, Gowon should go and pray for his people who will inevitably be wiped off one of these days by the Hausa/ Fulani. It will be a cold day in hell for such acts to be repeated against the Igbo in the future. We ndigbo have already recovered all our lost grounds in Nigeria. We are waiting for who will try to secede in the future. I know most of those defending Awo's actions here do so in lame attempts at revising history. As long as there is Nigeria (and there will always be Nigeria), be afraid, be very afraid because that fate will befall you later. Idi'ot's.

Afam, I suspect you are an honest man. Would you be willing to admit that if Ojukwu  has surrendered as soon as the blockade was in place, hundreds of thousands of Igbo women and children's lives would not have perished? Allowing these children and women to die senselessly is an attrocious act of wickedness and cowardice.

I am not talking about what Ojukwu saw 40 years ago and are being witnessed as you put it, today. I am talking about hundreds of thousands of Igbo children and women who died. Surely, Ojukwu shares in the responsibility of their dealths.  That of course, is not to say that the people who imposed the blockade are free of sin.

Confirm your honesty and admit that what Ojukwu did in this case, was wrong. Let's call a spade, a spade.
It is always better to approach this type of topic on the basis of logic and inherent rationale. The US fought a war in Vietnam for many years, but lost. They had other options of ending the war victoriously, but chose to leave Vietnam in defeat rather than to kill millions of innocent Vietnamese. They had weapons that could have forced Vietnam to surrender, but chose not to use them.

The problem I have with people like you is that you fail to see that the murderous (win at all cost) strategies employed by Nigeria (defended and packaged by Awolowo) is still at the roots of executive mass murders still going on in Nigeria today. That seed was sowed in Biafra and it continues unabated in current Nigeria -40 years after the war.

Yes, Biafra could have still lost the war if those strategies were not used, but the prosecutors of the war failed to lay a foundation of justice and righteousness within the window of opportunity presented by the Biafran war. The evil seeds sowed then have born fruits multiple times over up to the present when Nigeria is facing a possible chaos because some people believe that they own Nigeria -stuff that made Ojukwu reject Gowon's ascendancy to national leadership in 1966. They can't even respect the constitution. They believe they are born to rule.

I will make a bold statement now, you can take it or leave it: Ojukwu is the only living Nigerian actor in that war who had the best interest of a good nation at heart, be that nation Nigeria or Biafra. All his struggles and things he fought for are yet to be proven wrong, which is why the Igbo (arguably the most independent minded Nigerians) still listen to him even today. I rest my case.  cool

Your biggest fear in Igboland is Ojukwu and we cannot help you about that. The man has earned the trust and respect of a people so independent minded as Ndigbo. I know that this gives your aboki people sleepless nights, but you should live with it. Today, your people are being executed in full public glare without court trials. My people have learned how to survive in Nigeria. Notice that less and less of ndigbo are dying in these riots and mass killings because we are adopting measures. Like Afam pointed out, ndigbo have really moved on and learned all the necessary lessons. That is why it will never happen to us again in Nigeria. That is why it will keep happening to everyone who tries to revise the murderous history of Nigeria.

One major downside of online forums is that preschool toddlers offer "expert opinions" on topics of doctoral level research. I wish some filter can be installed in some of these topics to reject comments from airheads.
PoliticsRe: Civil war not against Ndigbo — Gowon by Onlytruth(m): 8:48am On Feb 13, 2010
What does anyone expect Gowon to say? He should stop insulting us with all those lies, that is what makes reconciliation difficult.

People like Gowon should realize that his lies are still killing people, even 40 years after the war. How else do we explain the fact that Nigerians are rounded up from riots and instead of being taken to custody and charged according to the law, they are taken into the open spaces and executed in full glare of the public -the exact acts carried out by Murtala Muhammed in Asaba and Onitsha in 1970?

It has even worsened now because the executing policeman and soldiers these days value their bullets more than the citizens Gowon claim to be securing in the Nigerian nation. Until people like Gowon own up to their lies and crimes against humanity, the Nigerian nation will remain one huge human execution theater.
PoliticsRe: Anambra: Ngige Calls For Run-off, Heads For Tribunal by Onlytruth(m): 8:35am On Feb 13, 2010
Ngige should beware. He is about to be grouped together with the enemies of Anambra state. This election is bringing out the true characters of these contestants. God is alive.

I find that statement extremely curious. Isn't exile a bit extreme? But then, maybe there are things we don't know. Could he really have had an "agenda" then?
I don't buy the BS about the CEO's suddenly having govt strings to pull.
That guy came with an agenda, no doubt. I'm still struggling to count his achievement since he took over. It is not enough to show us the boogieman, you must also show us how he is our business. The boogieman may be busy minding his business and you scare us into making investments that "protect" us from him. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

If he had no agenda, then he has nothing to worry about. I started getting worried when I saw him playing the role of EFCC boss. He has almost completely forgotten central banking. He wants to replace Ribadu.
PoliticsRe: The Downfall Of Northern Supremacy by Onlytruth(m): 1:44am On Feb 13, 2010
The fall of "Northern Supremacy" is inevitable and it is already happening. Like the legal statement says -you cannot put something on top of nothing!

The north will soon be overwhelmed by the restless south that is far more educated and internationally connected. The British will soon find out that they must abandon the north or sink with them. The world has changed too much for the least qualified to continue leading Nigeria, and we know that the least qualified Nigerians (in terms of education and managerial skills) are in the north. The cart cannot pull the horse for ever. Soon the horse will turn and take back its rightful place.

Voting PDP out of power or PDP produces a very genuine presidential candidate, which one is better and can be easily done?

PoliticsRe: Ohakim Goes To S’court Again Over Agbaso’s Case by Onlytruth(m): 1:14am On Feb 13, 2010
I am not from Imo state but any negative development in any part of Igbo land worries me. What the f'cuk  is this zoning in gubernatorial elections, and what has it to do with popular mandate? This zoning poison is a Nigeria malaise that has now infected our culture. When was the last time a leadership position was zoned in Igbo culture? In the days of the Igbo state union, none of those were zoned. Suddenly Ohanaeze is now zoning their positions.

I can probably understand Ohanaeze's case because it does not control our purse. We must reject it in government positions. We are Ndigbo and if you want to occupy a position of leadership, educate yourself first, and acquire the best skills, then come out and tell our people how you will lead them right. That's all!

That is the nonsense that the defeated PPA candidate in Anambra gubernatorial election tried to pull and the people roundly rejected it at the polls. Zoning breeds mediocrity. Period. If Agbaso won that election, his mandate should be retrieved from the thieves who stole it!
