PoliticsRe: Why Nigerians Should Accept Homosexuality by onoja12: 3:41am On Aug 04, 2015
ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS 14 YEARS IN THE GALLOS IF I SEE YOU IN THE ACT

MaziKachi:
Talk about legalizing or at least ignoring homosexuals in Nigeria and the average Nigerian youth will show up online and begin to throw tantrums. The reason for their homophobia is simple, its unnatural for a man to love a fellow man, its against our customs and traditions and it’s a moral ill. So when President Goodluck Jonathan signed the bill criminalising homosexuality, the whole Nigerians commended the “feat”. Of course, the West spoke out and Nigerians, in their usual bursts of inferiority complex, a deep seated fear that they were colonised and 50 years later, they are still dependent on their colonisers, spoke out, saying that America cannot impose its “devilish gay agenda” in Nigeria. Fine and good. Now, let us carefully dissect this situation, at the end, you’ll see that Nigerians are contradicting themselves.

According to the human rights declaration, all humans have the
• Right to self-determination[1]
• Right to liberty[2]
• Right to due process of law[2]
• Right to freedom of movement[3]
• Right to freedom of thought[4]
• Right to freedom of religion[4]
• Right to freedom of expression[5]
• Right to peacefully assemble[6]
• Right to freedom of association[7]

( Ref https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fundamental_rights )

So if we claim that homosexuality is a moral ill, what right have we to choose for another person, his religion? What right have we to decide what is right and what is not about another person’s life? Homosexuality, sex between two people of same sex in the privacy of their rooms and with the full consent of both parties does no harm to anyone, it doesn’t infringe of any of your fundamental human rights so what right have you to judge another human, to castigate another human simply because he chose to love a man his sex? If you claim its against your religion, do you know if his permits it?

Africans, having gone through slavery should be at the fore front of homosexual rights, not its biggest obstacle. In 1959, the police in Virginia arrested a couple, Richard Loving and Mildred Jeter. Their crime? They were married to each other. Richard was a white guy and Mildred a colored lady. If this had happened in 2015, Nigerians would have been online, throwing all manner of vituperations and accusing the United States of supporting racism. But then again, what is the difference between arresting an interracial couple for choosing to love one another and arresting a homosexual couple for choosing to love one another? Nothing! In both cases, the couples are arrested because the chose to be different, not to follow forged paths. At the end, Nigeria’s hostility towards homosexuals would be the greatest hypocrisy there ever was.

Another argument, perhaps, the most ridiculous of them all, is that homosexuality is against our culture and traditions. Then I begin to wonder which “culture” and which “traditions” these people mean. You sleep with a girl before you get married, it’s not against “our culture”, you become a Christian or a Muslim, it’s not against “our culture”, You marry from another tribe, it’s still not against “our culture”, you even go ahead desecrate shrines in the name of Christianity or Islam and it’s still not against “our culture” then, then when somebody speaks of accepting a man who chose to love another man, which by the way, is none of your business and you spring up with the argument that it is against our “culture” the one begins to wonder if you’re being hypocritical or you just decided to close your eyes to reason. Again, Kendall(1990) posited from her research in various African countries, prominent of which is Lesotho, that African culture, though not recognising homosexual marriages, was not homophobic. So I truly wonder where the argument of “culture” and “tradition” stems from and if this “cultures and traditions” cannot be changed by men who made them.

Finally, the sole aim of this piece is not to ask for the legalisation of same sex marriages in Nigeria, it is to ask for the acceptance of homosexuals as normal sane people who are aware of their decisions. It is to ask for the repeal of the law that criminalises same sex association in Nigeria. When we start to grow tolerant of each other and realise that a love affair between two consenting men or women does not hurt you or affect you in any way is when we’ll understand that being Igbo or Hausa does not really matter when it comes to determining the destiny of Nigeria. I am not a homosexual, but having read so much literature on slavery and what the black race has had to pass through to be accepted, I feel we should embrace and accept the LGBT community in our midst.

My friend all you have written is simply rubbish, are you attempting to use jewish laws in replacement for African law, or you want to abandon African tradition for a jewish interpretation.my friend this is Africa bible has no explanation when it come to tradition so don't get it twisted

Toks2008:
In many Countries, the issue of Bride price has been known to be a well grounded factor in determining your franchise over the lady.

In some parts of the world, this issue has been blown beyond proportion that huge money is usually asked by the Bride's parent and many suitors see this as very discouraging.

The amazing fact is that if you ask anyone why a bride price must be paid, they will be very quick to answer that GOD commanded it and even our pastors are quick to lay emphasis on this as a condition that must be met before a man and woman can be said to be married before GOD.

But is Bride price really a condition necessary for marriage? Can we say you are really married even if bride price have not been paid? Did GOD specifically lay down this as a law or was it man made tradition? Can Bride price be paid at anytime during the course of the couple living together as Man and wife? and is it proper for the bride's parents to present a list or ask for monetary bride price from the groom's family?

These shocking truths from the very Bible people use as yardstick for bride price will clear the air.

1. Bride price was never a commandment from GOD as a condition for marriage but only as a penalty for rape and in fact, you can still pay the Bride price and still be denied the woman to be your wife by the Father.

Lets read this from the book of exodus 22:16-17:
"If a man seduces a virgin who is not pledged to be married and sleeps with her, he must pay the bride-price, and she shall be his wife.If her father absolutely refuses to give her to him, he must still pay the bride-price for virgins."

Deuteronomy 22:28-29: "If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, he shall pay her father fifty shekels[a] of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.

2.Monetary bride is to be paid only on a virgin provided the man has slept with her before he decides to marry her but if the man has never slept with her, there should be no need to pay a dime on her.(Read again Exodus 22:16-17 above)

3.Even if a man meets a virgin and defiles her and decides to marry her,no man is expected to pay more than 50shekels of silver as a penalty and according to Google research, 50 shekels of silver is just about 15usd today so what is this madness going on where in some places a man is asked to pay hundreds and thousands for a lady who have probably slept with many men.

4.There was never ever a place in the Bible where GOD commanded the bride's parent to present a list but it is the groom's responsibility to bring whatever he dims fit for the lady he wants to marry.

The great example in the Bible was Isaac's marriage to Rebekah who was a virgin and there was no monetary exchange or penalty whatsoever between the two families but affordable gifts were giving to Rebekkah's family by Abraham but not demanded for by Rebekkah's family. Read Genesis 24:52-54.

5. Bride price according to the bible is all about virgins and all the references and bible verses all point to paying a penalty for defiling a virgin as well as giving gifts as Abraham did to Rebekah who also happen to be a virgin.

Genesis 24:15-16:Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel son of Milkah, who was the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor. The woman was very beautiful, a virgin; no man had ever slept with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar and came up again.

6.Payment of monetary bride price on ladies generally whether virgins or non virgins is a tradition and not a direct commandment from GOD and in some countries like india, its a woman that actually pays a dowry on the groom and not the other way round.

7.Presenting list or asking for monetary bride price from a man who conscientiously marries a lady is man made rule and not from GOD hence becomes a sin because its better to obey GOD rather than men.

Acts 5:29:Peter and the other apostles replied: "We must obey God rather than human beings!

Conclusively i would advice that we just flow with the fun fare and traditions of the land and pay the bride price to either the Father of the Bride or the Mother of any lady we want to marry even if she is a LovePeddler.

Nevertheless.outrageous monetary bride price or list must be discouraged because it is not even Biblical in the first place but only necessary to obey customs and traditions.

Even Prophet Mohamed(May the peace of GOD be upon him) has this to say:

"the most blessed marriage is one in which the marriage partners place the least burden on each other" (al-Haythami, Kitab ab-Nikah, 4:255).

My candid take.

ROSSIKE:
Homosexuality is not un-African

It is legalized homophobia, not same-sex relations, that is alien to Africa

April 26, 2014

by Sylvia Tamale

During a prime time interview with BBC’s “Hard Talk” show in March 2012, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni noted, “Homosexuals in small numbers have always existed in our part of black Africa …They were never prosecuted. They were never discriminated against.”

Earlier this year, confronted by internal and external pressure, Museveni reversed himself and signed the Anti-Homosexuality Bill in the full glare of the media — declaring that homosexuality was Western-imposed. Before signing the law, Museveni asked a team of top-notch Ugandan scientists to help him make an educated decision. The panel’s report did not mince words: “In every society, there is a small number of people with homosexual tendencies.”

Museveni’s bizarre actions can only be interpreted as a political ploy ahead of presidential elections scheduled for early 2016. Having been at the helm since 1986, Museveni faces serious competition both within and outside his party, not to mention a restless population afflicted by a high cost of living, unemployment and a general disgust with rampant corruption. By the stroke of a pen, Museveni succumbed to populist pressures and condemned an otherwise law-abiding sexual minority to maximum sentences of life imprisonment.

Uganda is not alone in its anti-gay crusade. Nigeria recently passed a law criminalizing homosexuality. Several other African countries — including Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Cameroon and Sierra Leone — have all expressed the desire to emulate Uganda and Nigeria. At least 38 African countries already proscribe consensual same-sex behavior.

The sad, tired but widely accepted myth that homosexuality is un-African has been valorized and erected on the altar of falsehood time after time. It is a myth that has been played out in numerous contexts, most recently over the debate on Uganda’s anti-homosexuality bill. However, historical facts demand that this fable be debunked once and for all.

African sexualities

The 'homosexuality is un-African' myth is anchored on an old practice of selectively invoking African culture by those in power. African women are familiar with the mantra. “It is un-African” whenever they assert their rights, particularly those rights that involve reproductive autonomy and sexual sovereignty.

The mistaken claim that anything is un-African is based on the essentialist assumption that Africa is a homogeneous entity. In reality, however, Africa is made up of thousands of ethnic groups with rich and diverse cultures and sexualities. As appealing as the notion of African culture may be to some people, no such thing exists. Moreover, even if we wanted to imagine an authentic African culture, like all others, it would not be static.

African history is replete with examples of both erotic and nonerotic same-sex relationships. For example, the ancient cave paintings of the San people near Guruve in Zimbabwe depict two men engaged in some form of ritual sex. During precolonial times, the “mudoko dako,” or effeminate males among the Langi of northern Uganda were treated as women and could marry men. In Buganda, one of the largest traditional kingdoms in Uganda, it was an open secret that Kabaka (king) Mwanga II, who ruled in the latter half of the 19th century, was gay.

The vocabulary used to describe same-sex relations in traditional languages, predating colonialism, is further proof of the existence of such relations in precolonial Africa. To name but a few, the Shangaan of southern Africa referred to same-sex relations as “inkotshane” (male-wife); Basotho women in present-day Lesotho engage in socially sanctioned erotic relationships called “motsoalle” (special friend) and in the Wolof language, spoken in Senegal, homosexual men are known as “gor-digen” (men-women). But to be sure, the context and experiences of such relationships did not necessarily mirror homosexual relations as understood in the West, nor were they necessarily consistent with what we now describe as a gay or queer identity.

Same-sex relationships in Africa were far more complex than what the champions of the “un-African” myth would have us believe. Apart from erotic same-sex desire, in precolonial Africa, several other activities were involved in same-sex (or what the colonialists branded “unnatural”) sexuality. For example, the Ndebele and Shona in Zimbabwe, the Azande in Sudan and Congo, the Nupe in Nigeria and the Tutsi in Rwanda and Burundi all engaged in same-sex acts for spiritual rearmament — i.e., as a source of fresh power for their territories. It was also used for ritual purposes. Among various communities in South Africa, sex education among adolescent peers allowed them to experiment through acts such as “thigh sex” (“hlobonga” among the Zulu, “ukumetsha” among the Xhosa and “gangisa” among the Shangaan).

It is ironic that an African dictator wearing a three-piece suit, caressing an iPhone, speaking in English and liberally quoting the Bible can dare indict anything for being un-African.

In many African societies, same-sex sexuality was also believed to be a source of magical powers to guarantee bountiful crop yields and abundant hunting, good health and to ward off evil spirits. In Angola and Namibia, for instance, a caste of male diviners — known as “zvibanda,” “chibados,” “quimbanda,” gangas” and “kibambaa” — were believed to carry powerful female spirits that they would pass on to fellow men through anal sex.

Even today, marriages between women for reproductive, economic and diplomatic reasons still exist among the Nandi and Kisii of Kenya, the Igbo of Nigeria, the Nuer of Sudan and the Kuria of Tanzania. Like elsewhere around the world, anal intercourse between married opposite-sex partners to avoid pregnancy was historically practiced by many Africans before the invention of modern contraceptive methods.

Clearly, it is not homosexuality that is un-African but the laws that criminalized such relations. In other words, what is alien to the continent is legalized homophobia, exported to Africa by the imperialists where there had been indifference to and even tolerance of same-sex relations. In Uganda such laws were introduced by the British and have been part of our penal law since the late 19th century. The current wave of anti-homosexuality laws sweeping across the continent is therefore part of a thinly veiled and wider political attempt to entrench repressive and undemocratic regimes.

Alien to Africa

Equally alien to the continent are the Abrahamic religions (particularly Christianity and Islam) that often accompany and augment the “un-African” arguments against homosexuality. African traditional religions were (and still are) integrated into the people’s holistic and everyday existence. It was intricately tied to their culture, including sexuality.

With the new religions, many sexual practices that were acceptable in precolonial, pre-Islamic and pre-Christian Africa were encoded with tags of “deviant,” “illegitimate” and “criminal” through the process of proselytization and acculturation.

The struggle to win full citizenship for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex groups is global. Even in countries where homosexuality has been decriminalized, the consciousness of the majority has yet to catch up with reformed laws. In order to completely dispel homophobia from Africa, we may have to employ radically new methods of advocacy that resonate with African philosophies such as Ubuntu. This concept encompasses many values — humaneness, solidarity, interdependence, compassion, respect and dignity. It rejects selfish, paternalistic and restrictive regulations issued by rulers riding high moral horses in complete disregard of the interests of their neighbors, their community and their fellow human beings.

The late Nelson Mandela described this philosophy as “the profound sense that we are human only through the humanity of others, that if we are to accomplish anything in this world, it will in equal measure be due to the work and achievements of others.”

The homosexuality-is-un-African mantra negates everything that African history and tradition has transmitted to posterity. A tenet of African philosophy holds that “I am because you are.” In short, it matters little about the differences that each one of us displays but much about the essence of humanity that binds us together. What really matters is the respect for human dignity and diversity.

If you want to challenge the powers of the NASS bureacrats to create the standing rules for the incomming senate simply go to court!!!! Also, the condemnation of our military is not because of the killings in active engagement of the enemy. Nobody and including Leahy has condemned the military for deaths of civilians that are bound to occur when taking over camps at Sambisa or other areas. That is to be expected. Likewise it will be over the top condemning the US for deaths that occur during airstrikes on enemy positions.

The best they can do is to limit casualties or collateral damage to as low as possible.

In any event, we should pray that God's kingdom comes. At that time, all wars will cease (Psalms 46:8,9 and Isaiah 2:2-4)

The man Leahy said the truth. The pity is that the North due to their high level of illiteracy does not have a vibrant press whuich would have exposed the atrocities.
