For the second time in two years, the House of Representatives on Thursday directed that the Presidential Scholarship Scheme on Innovation and Development should be suspended pending its scrutiny of its process, procedures and beneficiaries.

The House committee chairman on education, Hon. Aminu Suleiman, who chaired a public hearing on the matter, expressed regrets that its previous decision was jettisoned by the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) with the support of the ex-minister of education, Nyesom Wike.

"Last year we asked for the exercise to be stopped and reversed because some parts of the country felt cheated. Unfortunately, the Executive Secretary of the NUC through the directive of the former minister of education and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), snubbed us.

"But the committee allowed it to pass believing that a lesson would have been learnt. But here we are again. The same process is being adopted.”

In response, the Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Julius Okojie, insisted that qualification for the scholarship is based on merit and not federal character. He explained that only first class graduates are involved.

Stressing that out of the multiple entries, only 100 applicants are selected as beneficiaries, Okojie advised that the scheme should not be scrapped.

He said he would not be a party to deliberately design a system that would exclude some parts of the country. "Unless we are saying that the criteria have to change, I will not advise that the programme should be scrapped," he emphasized, pointing out that whatever transpired at the meeting he would relay to the President.

But again, Suleiman reminded him that "the issues you raised this afternoon are similar to the ones you gave us last year."

He noted that Wike truncated the decision of the House. "You continue to argue that there are some states of the federation that cannot make first class degrees."

He faulted the NUC scribe for failing to provide the advertisement the commission made for the awards of scholarships, the list of applicants and the members of the board that selected the beneficiaries and how many times the board sat.

Saying that the committee wanted these details to ascertain why two-thirds of the country was excluded from the programme, the committee chairman observed : "You didn't get back to us.

"The only thing we saw was the ceremony on television where the former minister tried to set parents against the National Assembly.

"It is our belief in this committee that there is no state in the country where you cannot find a first class graduate. Those questions we asked last year are still valid."

Suleiman then ruled: "Until that is done, we will stop the process."

Among other landmarks, the tour brought her to the building , where Frederick Lugard supposedly signed the Amalgamation of Northern and Southern Nigeria on 1 January 1914.
We like the idea of a centenary celebration. if anything, it will help to unite our dear country even more. Already, there is a whole raft of centenary everything:centenary city, centenary slogan, centenary song, centenary logo/emblem, centenary lottery,centenary website.
But so far no mention has been made of Zungeru, Niger State, where Frederick Lugard actually signed the amalgamation into effect.


Zungeru should be the ideal CENTENARY CITY, a town that should be properly prepared ahead of the 2014 commemoration. I do hope this image will be published in your respected medium to draw attention to an unfairly neglected but significant town in our country’s history.

Alafu told Ms Pekin a party was taking place a nearby villa, and the pair agreed to go to it together. Inside the house, Alafu locked the door and forced Ms Pekin to the bed where he allegedly attacked her.

I was literally shaking and drooling… I threw some very feeble punches, but I could not move my arms…I could not move anything.’

Ms Pekin believed she was safe when a cab picked her up, only for Alafu to force his way into the cab and again allegedly rape her.
He kept trying to kiss me… he molested me in the back of the taxi for everyone, for the taxi driver, to see. He wouldn’t stop.’

Ms Pekin escaped the cab when it got back into the city of Kuta, when Alafu stalked after her again.

‘He loped after me… he was laughing – he was taunting me,’ she told ACA.

It was only after another man, believed to be a fellow Australian, saw Ms Pekin was distressed and stepped in to help her.

‘I wish I could find that man… he deserves a medal, that man saved my life,’ Ms Pekin said.

Ms Pekin’s sister, Frances, discovered her on the floor of her hotel room hours later.

‘She wasn’t even on the bed – she was next to the bed crying, shaking… in that moment I knew something, the worst had happened,’ Frances Pekin said, according to the report.

The family rushed Ms Pekin to hospital, where doctors found her entire body covered in bruises.

‘He was crushing me, he nearly suffocated me… He could have killed me,’ Ms Pekin said.

The 19-year-old then had a ‘virginity test’ at Sanglah Hospital, which she said was similar to a ‘third assault’.

‘The test was horrible, It was invasive… It was painful.’

The test not only confirmed to police Ms Pekin had been raped, but it also revealed she had contracted a sexually transmitted infection in the attack.

Four of Alafu’s friends were arrested in a raid on the property on January 14, however it is believed he had escaped by that point.

Police tracking revealed his phone was later used in Jakarta before being deactivated. His Facebook account was later opened from Nigeria.

The Pekin family was paid more than $14,000 in legal fees over four days to proceed with the case.

Interpol was notified last week that Alafu is a wanted man. The Pekins are currently waiting for Interpol to issue a red notice for his arrest, which would allow the Australian government to push for Mr Alafu’s arrest.” Dailymail reports.

We should not be carried away by reports that Nigeria makes 70 billion dollars a year from crude oil. 70 billion dollars is chicken change for 170 million people. 70 billion dollars is not enough for Lagos state; 70 billion dollars in not enough to fix the rot in our education sector; 70 billion dollars is not enough to give us that level of infrastructure we see in the developed world.

Nigeria needs to be earning revenues of about 300 billion dollars annually in order for any serious development to take place. There's no hope in sight that this will achievable in the next ten years.

To make matters worse, the way the money Nigeria earns is shared makes it very difficult for Nigeria to develop or for the money be used to achieve anything meaningful. As long as all that Nigeria does is get money from crude oil and share the money among all the state and local governments, then we are wasting our time. We have been trying that for the past sixteen years and nothing has changed. We should try something new

The truth is that we are decades away from development and the farther you neglect your education, infrastructure and economy, the harder and more costly they get in order to fix.

We failed to fix these problems in the early days when they were easier to fix, we have to live with the brunt of our failures and mistakes.

I wish Buhari well but I doubt if he can do much or create any impact.

MTN Nigeria on Monday warned that should there be attacks on its facilities, it might be forced to close shop and 99 per cent of its over 6,000 workforce in the country, who are Nigerians, would be thrown into the labour market.

Goodluck said, “So, if people go ahead with their threats to attack our facilities, what that means is that we may be forced to close down the business in Nigeria and about 6,000 Nigerians that make up 99 per cent of our workforce will be unemployed.

“Then, when you look at our support chain, we have about 500,000 Nigerians gainfully employed. So, boycotting our services simply means destroying so many other Nigerian businesses and making over 500,000 other Nigerians to lose their jobs.

“This business supports a lot of businesses across the length and breadth of Nigeria. Many of the businesses that are affiliated to South Africa are in the retail space, supporting the growth of Nigeria and employing so many Nigerians.”

He noted that the company had spent in excess of $15bn on capital expenditure growing the telecommunications business in Nigeria.

“We see no revenge of Xenophobia and we commend the role the Nigerian High Commissioner in South Africa has played; at least there has been no fatality on the part of any Nigerian,” Goodluck added.

I am a fervent reader on Nairaland and i dont miss this forum in 1 day, i have seen people share their concerns here and a lot of people have contributed through their comments, though some are hillarious while others are on point. i will appreciate matured responses.

I did not marry a stranger to start with and its why i am very pained cuz i come here on nairaland and see how people get frustrated about their marriage based on cogent reasons but mine is different.

first of all, I got married in february and am already very tired of my wife, not because she isnt very sexy or good in bed as other may experienced but because my wife starts arguments from little things as little as why did u miss my call, even if its a BBM call thats dependent of network, after hours of begging i have to end up with uncountable "am sorry".

secondly, my wife find it very easy to engage in malice for days without bothering to reconcile, and i have to talk to her over again and make her see reason why such act is not good in marriage, for which she will later apologize and the next day or same day she is back again in another episode.

thirdly, every man love to be respected, when my wife starts her drama about missed call or other flimsy excuses, she starts talking to me like am her junior brother, calling me names and after noticing how mad i am with her, she will apologize but always repeat such act.

i feel the amount of love and attention she gets from me is too much and i am beginning to think i should make her understand what it feels like to have a frustrated marriage. though am yet to do that.

i honestly am not perfect but i have never used any harsh word while addressing her even when she is obviously wrong, i dont do so because i know the feeling when she use them for me. i wish i could anyway.

i grew up in a place where women are highly regarded and well treated and maybe its affecting me because i also help her do chores and i dont push all the house work to her as most men do.

i noticed i am always very unhappy and depressed the moment she comes up with this episodes and it may be because i love her so much and this is beginning to affect how i study and i might be forced to push her away first by not giving her attention as i used to.
