Calls for the United States to send some of the experimental Ebola drug to West Africa have been shot down by President Barack Obama. President Obama has said that it is still too soon to send the drug, Zmapp to Africa to treat infected people. The secret serum came to light when it was used to treat two American aid workers who got infected while treating sick people in Liberia. One of them, Kent Brantly showed significant improvement one hour after being given the drug while the other, Nancy Writebol got better after 2 doses. Obama however said that efforts in West Africa should focus on improving facilities and sending more aid workers to the region. He said: "We've got to let the science guide us," "I don't think all the information is in on whether this drug is helpful. What we do know is that the Ebola virus - both currently and in the past - is controllable if you have strong public health infrastructure in place." "Let's get all the health workers that we need on the ground," he added. "Let's help to bolster the systems that they already have in place. "During the course of that process, I think it's entirely appropriate for us to see if there are additional drugs or medical treatments (that can help)." The Nigerian Health Minister, Onyebuchi Chukwu disclosed earlier that he had discussed with the US about the possibility of accessing the experimental drug ZMapp. However the US Center for Disease Control has said that there are "virtually no doses available". The disease has killed over 900 people since the first case was recorded in February this year. RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) – FIFA on Wednesday suspended the Nigeria Football Federation with immediate effect over “government interference”. The decision came after a Nigerian court sacked the NFF and the government appointed a sole administrator for the country’s football shortly after the national team returned from the World Cup. “The FIFA Emergency Committee has decided today to suspend the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) with immediate effect, on account of government interference,” a FIFA statement said. Unless the suspension is lifted Nigeria will not be able to play in the upcoming FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup scheduled for August 5-24. A group of Higher National Diploma holders in the public service, yesterday, dragged the federal government before the National Industrial Court, NIC, sitting in Abuja, asking it to declare that they are entitled to the same remunerations and progression in their work places as their counterparts with first degree without any discrimination whatsoever. The plaintiffs are further praying the court for an order directing the defendants to implement the directives of the government white paper on the presidential committee on the consolidation of emoluments in the public sector. Aside the Attorney General of the Federation, others cited as defendants in the suit were the National Council on Establishment and the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation. The scramble for who takes over the position of Super Eagles coach has started after France kicked Eagles out of the Brazil World Cup. Keshi had delivered a valedictory speech to his players at the dressing room in Brasilia after they were bundled out 2-0 by France to signal the rush for applications by many coaches who admire the glut of talents that abound in the Super Eagles. But an official of the NFF who pleaded anonymity confirmed that they have been besieged by many interests from foreigners but said that it was too early for them to disclose the identities of such coaches since Keshi had not tendered his resignation letter to the body. ‘’Everything we have heard about his resignation is from the press. He has not informed us formally and as such, we still consider him as our coach. Many coaches have expressed their interests in the job but we need to meet and review our performance in the World Cup and sundry issues. If he insists on resigning, definitely, his position will be taken over by someone else. But for now, he is still our coach”, one of the influential officials of the football house told Sports Vanguard here in Brazil. Keshi yet again gave a hint that he was done with the Eagles job in an interview he granted TheCable and was asked if he has resigned; ‘’ Yes. I have done my bit. I am tired of all the intrigues and backbiting and insinuations I get”. When asked ifPresident Goodluck Jonathan intervenes and sort things out like he did after the Africa Cup of Nations, Keshi said: ‘’As much as I respect and appreciate the number one citizen of the country I am afraid that this time it is going to be difficult. I am totally done with some of these people”. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/07/foreign-coaches-scramble-super-eagles-job/?utm_source=&utm_medium=facebook |

ENUGU—AS part of efforts to forestall attack on the church by Boko Haram insurgents who are feared to have invaded the South Eastern states, the Catholic Diocese of Enugu, yesterday, conducted thorough screening of its members before allowing them into the Sunday services. The church also banned women from entering with hand-bags as part of the security measures. Some Pentecostal churches within Enugu have also procured bomb detecting equipment with which they screened vehicles driven by worshippers into the premises of the churches within the state capital. Some churches have constructed iron barricades to prevent insurgents from hitting the church buildings with their vehicles. The extra security measures by the churches, according to the church leaders, came on the heels of the recent discovery of two bombs in the Winners’ Chapel in Owerri, Imo State, which were diffused by police bomb experts. The arrest of more than 400 insurgents at Aba, Abia State, by soldiers who alleged that two other buses containing suspected insurgents that fateful night successfully escaped has further increased the anxiety among the people of the South East over the presence of insurgents in the zone. The Bishop of Enugu Catholic Diocese, Rt. Rev. Calistus Onaga, was said to have directed all parish priests within the Diocese to make the official announcement regarding the ban on female worshippers coming into the churches with handbag, during Sunday services The bishop, who appealed to the church members to cooperate with the ushers and security men charged with maintaining security in the churches, explained that the exercise was not meant to embarrass the women or anybody, but borne out of the present disturbing insecurity challenges facing the nation. He assured that the security measures would be carried out with human face, and in a civilised manner, adding that the church did not want to take chances. A worshipper who do not want his name in print said, “I must tell you, the Bishop and entire Catholic faithful in Enugu, are apprehensive with the rumour of the insurgents infiltrating the east, especially the alleged recent escape of two buses conveying Boko Haram members in Abia state, during a security check. “I support the development that henceforth, women will no longer be allowed to enter Catholic churches during masses with hand bags, apart from their purses, which will also be subjected to thorough scrutiny by church workers. “Before today’s announcement was made, our Bishop had already briefed all the parish priests under the Diocese, so that they can take the message down to their various parishes. “Though, we known that if God did not guard a city, guard men will be guarding in vein; but there is also need for us as human beings to play our own part, while God plays his own part”. It was also observed in some of the Pentecostal churches within Enugu capital visited yesterday that the worshippers were subjected to thorough security screening by the internal security men of the churches while some churches were being guarded by armed policemen. Both cars and handbags were searched to ensure that no bomb was smuggled into the church while the premises were patrolled regularly to forestall attacks by insurgents who might target the places of worship. An explosion in the red light district of Bauchi city has killed 10 people and injured 14 others, police said Saturday. The cause of the late Friday blast was not immediately clear, but Boko Haram Islamists have attacked Bauchi repeatedly during their five-year uprising aimed at creating a strict Islamic state in the north. Bauchi state police spokesman Mohammed Haruna said the targeted building in the Bayan Gari neighbourhood on the outskirts of the city was widely known as a brothel. “Ten people were confirmed dead, while 14 others sustained various degrees of injury,” Haruna said, adding that the explosion went off at roughly 10:00 pm (2100 GMT). “The entire area has been cordoned off and (the) scene secured,” Haruna said. Bomb attacks on targets which Boko Haram has branded sinful – including bars, churches and schools teaching a Western curriculum – have formed a major part of the insurgency. Nigeria has estimated that more than 10,000 people have been killed since the conflict began in 2009. The violence has escalated in recent months, with more than 2,000 deaths recorded since the start of the year. The capital Abuja has been hit with three separate bomb attacks since mid-April, most recently on Wednesday when 24 people were killed in a blast at a popular shopping plaza in the heart of the city. Police had initially given a death toll of 21 for the attack, but the health ministry revised those figures upwards on Saturday. In Kano, the largest city in the mainly Muslim north, a bomb planted in the parking lot of a public health college killed eight people on Monday. The Islamist extremists have received unprecedented international attention in recent weeks following their April 14 abduction of more than 200 teenage girls from the town of Chibok in the northeast. The gruesome mass abduction has drawn condemnation from governments and prominent people worldwide and offers of military help from major world powers to boost Nigeria’s counter- insurgency effort. A second-year college student has died after jumping from the 7th story of high rise building in his school following heavy losses in World Cup gambling. The student who, simply identified his surname Lin in news reports, committed suicide after losing a big bet, reportedly over $3000 USD. A Debt And A Death A witness who spoke with Information Times said the student might have committed suicide after pressure from loan sharks. "I heard him say 'do not force me' and 'give me two more days and I'll return you the money' "He talked on the phone for more than 10 minutes. I saw him hang up and stand up and then all in a sudden he just disappeared," Information Times reported the witness as saying. An online media quoting a classmate and friend of the deceased student » reports that Lin had gambled nearly $7,000 US dollars on several students. “We heard that he borrowed quite a lot of money and the interest rate was rather high,” another student quoted in the report said. Deadly China Betting Lin is now the second Chinese to die in World Cup related circumstances after a 51-year-old former footballer, Li Mingqiang, died of 'over-excitement' while watching the Spain-Netherlands match which ended 5-1 in favor of the Orange boys. China has become the World's gambling capital and just last week, police in Hong busted an illegal World Cup betting ring which raked in an astonishing $600 million USD in one week - an all- time record.
