I got married at 25, finished my PhD at 27 and became a Professor at 40. So fast you see! Yes, everything around me worked fast. It is now that I realise that it was a misplaced priority. My ambition blindfolded me and I got it all wrong, that is why I am sharing my experience through this medium to warn and encourage our young mothers not to be careless as I was back then. I worked very hard as a lecturer and as an administrator, always so busy that it became my language to my children…”I’m busy”. My mum was around to nurse the children for me for some time. The moment they clocked ten, I sent them to boarding schools, though my husband was not in support of this. I always found my way. I had no warm relationship with my children, 2 boys and a girl. I never knew it was a bad idea not to have time for my husband, children and the household, until 5 years ago, when guilt, loneliness and restlessness filled my heart. I sent for my children to rejoice with me on my 60th birthday. The two boys, living in Canada said they are “busy” and that their sister will come down from South Africa. Two days to my birthday, my daughter sent this message to me, “Mum, I am very sorry not to be around over there, there is no time to squeeze out, my husband needs my attention at his newly established clinic and presently, I’m pregnant. “I’m very very busy, I’m also lonely in a strange land. Please pray for us mum. Happy birthday”. I could not recover from the meaning I got from the message… “First-things-First”. When they needed me for warmth and discussion, I was not available, now I needed them for warmth and discussion I could not get them, rather they returned my slogan back to me, “I’m busy” To worsen the matter, my dear husband died in his sleep a month after… Only one of the children came without his family to the burial ceremony. I was dumbfounded!!! Considered Opinion: it is good to work and be a hard working fellow. But hear this important and salient truth: Parenting is sacrificial work, give it all it takes. Avoid any work that will take away your attention too much from your home – Avoid it and be careful! Solidify your home first, create time for your spouse and children. Establish the fear of God in their hearts through your attitude and behaviour. Though it is costly now, the future reward is worth it. This is an eye opener for both men and women. Let’s be selflessly available when our children need us. Source: Why You Should Put Your Family First Lalsticlala, Mynd44 |

When it comes to your health, you can never be too careful. Even the most little things you may ignore may be a sign of a more serious problem, and the resulting pain is simply not worth the risk if you delay seeking the help of a medical professional. Thankfully, there is one part of your body that can signal warning signs about the rest of it: your feet. Accordingly, Jumia, Nigeria's No.1 shopping destination, shares health warning signs from your feet you should never ignore. Yellow toenails Your toenails should look a lot like your fingernails. If there’s any discolouration, it’s probably a sign that something else is going on. The most commonly discoloured toenail is yellow, and that is usually caused by a fungal infection. You can get this from just about anywhere, from your shoes to the local swimming pool. Luckily, a fungal infection is quick and easy to deal with. Flaky feet Flaky or dry skin isn’t a good thing, no matter where it is in your body. But for feet, specifically, flaky skin can be a sign of athlete’s foot, especially if the flakiness is coming from between the toes or it can signify problems with your thyroid. Cold feet If you experience cold feet, your feet may be trying to tell you something, namely that your thyroid may not be working correctly. It may also be a sign of poor circulation because your blood isn’t getting to your extremities. You may notice that your hands and fingers are also much colder than other people’s. If you’ve got constantly cold feet, it might be something worth checking out. Numbness It’s never good when a part of your body goes numb, so hopefully, when you feel your feet going numb for no reason, you’re already on your way to the doctor to check it out. Numbness in the feet can be caused by nerve damage. People with diabetes are at risk of having this numbness of the feet, so keep an eye out and get checked if this happens. Long-term sores A sore on your feet that won’t heal is a warning sign of diabetes. Cuts and sores would normally heal will stick around indefinitely. In extreme cases, this can lead to severe infection in which amputation is necessary. Source: Five Health Warning Signs From Your Feet To Never Ignore

Prices of schoolbooks, backpacks and school supplies are increasing every year. Check for yourself how the prices of these items vary in Nigeria and in other countries around the world. The beginning every new school year is often connected with stress, not only for the future first graders who suddenly need to enter a more ‘grown up world’ and leave their families’ safety, but also for the parents who need to face the financial side of this whole venture. We have decided to analyze the costs of the first graders’ school supplies for 2018 and to compare the spendings of an average Nigerian family to the expenditures of parents from 36 other countries in which the school year also starts in August or September. In order to accomplish an objective analysis, we focused only on the basic yet essential products from the school supplies list. For instance, we resigned from the comparison of the prices of shoes or school uniforms as these matters are often decided by the local authorities or school principals. We did not include things like student books either. Our data is based on current prices in selected online stores in the 36 countries that are part of the analysis. To calculate the average price, we have taken into consideration the items from the medium and low price ranges. While converting foreign currencies we used an average exchange rate from July 2018. A few thousand naira for a start https://i2.wp.com/cdn.picodi.com/ng/files/blog/2018/08/1-how-much-do-schoold-supplies-cost.png?resize=650%2C1541&ssl=1 Since the analyzed basket consisted of over 27 products, we have divided the whole item list into 4 categories: backpacks, basic stationery, creativity items, and PE clothing. Considering that pupils in most countries carry a large amount of items to and from school five days per week, it is necessary for every first grader to own a good quality backpack that will give him/her enough support and will not jeopardize his/her health. Although, in the first grade the number of school subjects is relatively low when compared to the programme of the whole primary school, the backpack needs to have enough space to accommodate a pencil case, a folder with notebooks, a few textbooks, a lunchbox and a bottle of water. In the Nigerian shops the average price of a quality backpack is ₦2050. For the most basic stationery set (notebooks, book sleeves, folder, pencil case, pens, pencils, eraser, pencil sharpener, and ruler) an average Nigerian family will spend a significantly higher amount than for a backpack, that is ₦10431 which is the second most expensive category in the school supplies list. Of course, the matter of prices is individual and depends a lot on the financial possibilities of the family and the conscious choices of the parents, as some shops offer both very cheap and very expensive, branded products. The art classes are very significant when it comes to making the whole education process more pleasurable for children. Overall, necessities useful during these classes are scissors, glue, construction paper, various kinds of poster colours, pencils, marker pens and plasticine. The total cost of these would be about ₦10182. The standard PE kit for the first grader consists of sports shorts, training shoes and two basic white t-shirts. After analysing the August deals from different online stores we have deduced that this part of pre-school shopping would consume ₦12913. The total cost of the school supplies for the first grader in Nigeria comes to ₦35580. Almost 55% Nigerians’ salary will be spent on the school supplies. Which countries spend more? https://i2.wp.com/cdn.picodi.com/ng/files/blog/2018/08/2-how-much-money-do-parents-spend-on-average-on-school-supplies-in-various-countries.png?resize=650%2C1610&ssl=1 We have decided to check what is the cost of school supplies in different countries compared to the country’s average salary. Comparing and contrasting, we have acknowledged that in 2018 the school starter kit would be equal to 54,74% of the average monthly Nigerian salary. Among other countries, relatively smaller amount of money is spent on the school kits by the Russians (18,91%), Brits (8,96% of their salary) and Americans (3,97%). Definitely the cheapest school supplies come to be in Switzerland and Sweden where the school supplies costs are equal to 2,99% and 3,14% of a national average. In the meantime, in Bulgaria, Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus and Vietnam the costs are greater than 20%. Source: How Much Do School Supplies Cost In Nigeria And In Other Countries? |
Located in the Middle East, Dubai is one of the seven emirates that constitute the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It’s considered the most cosmopolitan city in the region and is popular with tourists from all around the world. If this is your first trip to Dubai, Jumia, Nigeria's No. 1 Shopping Destination, highlights few things you should keep in mind. Culture is influenced by Islam https://i.pinimg.com/736x/3a/1d/e9/3a1de95628e06828b02082833edc1c6a--hijab-abaya-sun-shades.jpg The UAE is a Muslim country and their culture is heavily influenced by Islam. In general, you should be respectful of the local customs, wear modest clothing in public and follow guidelines provided by the staff at your hotel or at various tourist attractions. Hot and humid climate Dubai has a hot and humid climate, especially in the summer. So the best time to plan a trip to the city is between the months of October and March. Try not to visit during Ramadan (Muslim Holy Month of Fasting) as eateries will be closed and you won’t be able to eat or drink in public during the daytime. It’s also a good idea to dress conservatively even if you’re visiting during the summer. Very easy to traverse Dubai It’s easy to get around in Dubai thanks to the Dubai Metro, bus network, Dubai Tram and taxi service. The Metro starts from the airport and can take you to Jebel Ali which is at the other end of the city. Several tourist hot spots are also connected by the Metro and taxis are available for those that aren’t linked yet. Taxi fares are very reasonable if you want to pay with cash. Alternatively, you can also purchase a prepaid card which can be used for the Metro, buses, Tram and taxis. The official currency is Dirham https://www.godubaigo.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/shutterstock_402986341.jpg The official currency in Dubai is the UAE Dirham. Credit cards are accepted at most places in Dubai but it’s also useful to have an internationally active ATM card. This will let you withdraw from the local ATM’s in Dirhams and pay for various expenses. The city is home to the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. Located on Sheikh Zayed Road, you can find the Dubai Mall which houses the Dubai Aquarium along with an Underwater Zoo. If you prefer some sun and sand you can head to the Jumeirah Beach. The first day of the week in Dubai is Sunday The weekend in Dubai starts from Thursday to Saturday, not Friday to Sunday. All too often, naive foreigners are arrested for committing indecent acts. This is just one example of actions that might be legal in your own country, but aren't in Dubai. Others include drinking alcohol in public (except at licensed establishments) and giving someone the middle finger. Committing any of these offences may see you fined, stripped of your passport, and thrown in jail. Source: 7 Important Points To Know Before Travelling To Dubai cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |

Good for them. The GTBank Liberia management probably need to read this: Open Letter to Recruiters on the Modern Day Job Candidate |
By Teju ‘Fola’ – Alade Dear Recruiters/Hiring Managers, It is very 1902 to invite candidates for interviews and be engaged in other activities such as typing on your phone or on your laptop. It shows a poor and outdated recruitment process. The same respect you accord clients at business meetings that prevents you from working on your laptop or on your phone while in front of them, do accord same to job seekers during the interview process. You are not that busy, I assure you. It does not also position your company well when you do not take out time to read a candidate’s resume before the interview and right then and there in front of the candidate, you ask for some time to go through the resume as you just requested for a copy from the HR unit. This is 2018. Times have changed. Money is no longer a major motivating factor for high performers and strong potentials. The company culture is, and it starts with the recruitment process. I’ve had candidates refuse to proceed with interviews because of the attitude of the prospective employers during the recruitment process. You are not doing job seekers a favor by employing them. It is a mutual value hence you need to reflect that value at every stage of the recruitment process. Thank you.
