By Samson Adejoro FEAR NOT LADS, IT ALL A LIE Friends, you are moving into the next chapter of your life. And I would be surprised if on some level, you are not afraid. The unknown can be scary. Fear during a transition is natural, even expected. But don’t let fear factor into your decisions. Move as if you cannot fail. The odds may be stacked against you but you can beat the odds. People beat the odds every day, why not you? Let your dreams be the driver, taking you to places you have only been in your head. People ask me if I consider myself fortunate. Yes. I have been fortunate to be bold. Fortune favors the bold.— Oluwafemi M.T, Ph.D Freshmen would be resuming in some couple of days from now. New faces would be on campus. Grins would be on newly admitted students faces for obvious reasons. As we all know, in a country like ours, gaining admission into the university is not a mere feat—whether by long leg or short leg. At last, bye to WAEC, NECO, JAMB, and post-JAMB exams. Excitements about being offered admissions can’t be far from disclosure, as it is conspicuous, even to the blind(pun intended). But the interesting fact to behold about these freshfolks is: the rate at which they dissipate grapevines within conversations among themselves. Different students with different perspectives about how the university runs its calendar, usually getting their informations from unconfirmed sources. Some would tell you the duration and timeframe for studying Medicine is 10 years. Some would say the university in which they are just being offered admission into is the best university, while a freshman like him, would retort and say, “No, you are not correct.” Arguments would sprawl up. Actually, none of them have ever been in the system, but by the virtue of being privileged to listen to a beer parlour rumor sometimes ago, he stores it into his brain and misinform other students. At this time rumours are at best in full disclosure. Minds ready to study hard, shatter records, attain unimaginable milestones are being spoonfed with sad news about how lecturers in the university would never give A’s to students. How a dream of having a first class is a mirage. You hear things like–lecturers would never give you first class, even though you deserve it. They tell you things like–even though you work like an elephant; your reaps would come in a sparingly manner. I had almost once fell victim to this menace during my freshman years. We had just resumed and we were about taking a course with code PHY 101 ( Elementary Physics). Though I am a Computer Science student, and as such; I am not a student in the department of physics. But, being a science student, I am required to take my O Level courses, and Physics happened to be one of such courses. And so rumors started flying out that no matter how hard you study, grade “C” is awaiting you. You hear rumors like: “You better stop reading, don’t you know there is a long existing beef between your department- department of Mathematical science and the department of Physics.” Shivers went down my spines. “So you mean even though I got all the questions correctly, I would still be failed?” I asked a friend of mine. Curiously, I asked myself, “can this ever be true? ” Though as a freshman, one who is a Johnny Just Come ( JJC), I have no choice than to believe this hearsay. I believed it when I was told but I never let it affected my study pattern which is to study hard for exams. When the result came out, I had a B in the course. If I had not prepared and depended on hearsay, I would have had nothing other than a grade of “F” in the course, which is a carry over and a carry over is not a thing of joy to have in a 4-unit course. Freshmen, you would be scared with doomsday stories. Fallacious tales which have no historical facts would be chanted as chorus to your auditory nerves. They are nothing but lies. They are far from being true. Those stories are fallacies concocted in the lab of those who want nothing but academic damnation for you. And as I conclude this piece, I leave you with another quote from the same author as the one above: “Look, your dreams will always exist side by side with your fears. Both of them are a product of your rich imagination. And you have the power to make one or the other a reality. To have life, to have liberty, to have happiness, you need to feed your dreams and starve your fears. What will prevent you from living the life you want is not lack of money, or lack of time or lack of talent. What will prevent you from living the life you want is a lack of belief in your dreams. You have to believe your dreams to make them real.” To your very success, guys. Source: Myths You Should Not fall for as a Campus Jambite cc: Lalasticlala, Mynd44 |
We all spend daily to survive and to live the type of life we desire. Whether it’s spending on groceries, laundry service, a new footwear, the latest studded designer wrist watch, a vacation trip with the family or you just want to pay school fees, whatever it is we cannot totally avoid spending on one thing at a physical store or online. But sometimes we could go overboard with our spending habits that we begin to accumulate and abandon a lot of items we never use or just use once or twice before the next trend sets it. In order to control your spending impulse and spend on just the things you need and less of what you want, below are tips on how to practice the 30 days spending rule effectively. The idea is to be able to properly evaluate what you want to buy before buying it, the 30 day rule would give you time to consider if the product or service you are about to pay for is worth the price, and the effects of spending such amount on the products or services. Here’s how it works: Leave It Whenever you feel the urge to splurge for new shoes, a new video-game, a new Swiss wrist watch or a new Apple gadget, force yourself to stop. If you’re already holding the item, put it back. Leave the store. If it’s online, leave the site and get busy with other things. Make it obvious When you get home or get offline, take a piece of paper and write down the name of the item, the store where you found it the current price and date. Now post this note someplace obvious: a calendar, the fridge, your computer, or your glassware cupboard. The next 25 days For the next twenty-five days, think about why you really want to buy the item, but do not buy it. Make a list of the things you would have done better if you have the item. For instance if it’s a kitchen accessory, would it make cooking better, if it’s a gadget would it make you more effective at work or more productive, or would it make you simply cool. At this point, you would be sure you want to buy it or not. Who and what are your influencers Before you finally decide on whether you would buy it or not, find out who and what your influencers are. To make that easy pick any of the sentences that best suits why you are buying it A celebrity was using the item and it looked cool and I want to look cool too. The item is an improved version of an existing one and would be of great benefit to me. It is what is trending and I don’t want to miss out on the trend. If your objective answer is point two, you can go ahead and buy it, but if its point one or two, you should think about it again, so you don’t buy it today and realize there is a new trend 24 hours later. That’s all there is to it. But it’s surprisingly effective. The 30-day rule works especially well because you aren’t actually denying yourself you’re simply delaying gratification. This rule has another advantage: it gives you a chance to research the item you want to purchase. This can save you from being cheated. Sometimes the urge to spend is gone by the time you get home. Sometimes the urge grows stronger for a week or two but then subsides completely. It’s rare that you decide to buy something after 30 days of waiting, except it is very important that you even have to get more money to buy it. At the start of 2018, there were 2.3 million active Android apps for smartphones, and 3.5 million apps were available on Google Play. Impressive numbers! Not surprisingly, newcomers will lose in particular. That is why we have prepared this article. This does not concern all Android user’s age, business, or social status. We will not consider paying apps and games in this particular article. There are significant names that qualify for a separate study. We tried to diversify sections, so all five applications are completely different. 1. Social/Contact: Facebook The world’s leading social network brands reached the 5th place with over 1 billion downloads and the first non-branded product. Facebook does not need a detailed review, right? It manages the news feed, public posts, news, photos, videos, events, groups and more. If you’ve lots of friends, use Facebook. If you do not have friends, you can use it to find some. Alternatives: -Facebook Lite is a simplified version of Facebook with its full functionality. -Messenger to chat with friends and messenger lite individual applications. -Another cell-messenger with WhatsApp voice / video calls. -Instagram is a number-one network for photo sharing. -Also, Skype is designed by Microsoft and on the 1 billion downloads list. This app is mostly used for video calls. Beyond the above list, you may be interested in Viber, LINE or Snapchat, contact and socialize. 2. News/Magazines: Flipboard Flipboard is the most popular news collector, which collects data from thousands of social media sites, digital magazines, photo and video sharing networks and other sites. It regulates the packages and allows customized packages for each user to choose interesting topics and resources. Alternatives: -Reports add another message to the RSS Feed to show full articles. -BuzzFeed is a source of news, humor and seconds … a lot of seconds. -Reddit is a news sharing platform, with many title-based subcompacts and communities. -Another top alternative is packet. The app is slightly different from Flipboard because it saves interesting articles, photos, videos, notes and posts. There is a packet suggestions section, which acts as a news coordinator. 3. Optimization Tools: Clean Master Although this category is very wide, Clean Master surpasses all the alternatives. It’s a garbage cleaning, virus, photo storage, connection protection keeper, battery saver, sport and utility promotion. Clean Master serves as a multi-purpose tool. Alternatives: -Dropbox is the final storage and file sharing service, which synchronizes data from all the devices used. -Evernote refers to the keeper, calendar, and list for mobile and desktop. -LastPass creates and automatically fills your personal passwords for each site you use. There are also different VPN services, file managers, third-party calendars, calculators, browsers and customizable keyboards, you have to decide what to choose. 4. Photo/Video Editing: VSCO Pre-installed camera applications are not a good choice when it comes to image quality and, especially, filters. That’s why we recommend VSCO, with 500+ million downloads among other app filters and editing options. VSCO acts as a camera controller. Alternatives: -Retrica is a photo editing application that has additional options like stickers, image sharing and news. -Snapseed is a full feature tool for professional photo editing. -Breeze allows you to create artwork from regular photos. 5. Music/Audio: Spotify -Spotify is a music streaming service that allows free music and allows users to organize their playlists with albums and tracks. It supports offline mode with downloaded tracks, shareable playlists and radio stations. Spotify has a premium version but you can start with the free one. Alternatives: -Meworld is another audio distribution and sharing platform for users to compose users from around the world. -Shoes is a music-authoring tool that helps you find any song you want. -Besides music streaming applications, there are managers like various audio players and MX player. If you’re not comfortable with the built-in products, get it. There are free and paid versions without ads. Other apps to verify: There are many apps that smartphone and tablet users use on a daily basis. There are a number of popular categories with great applications, such as: -Adobe Services for Android provides a bunch of headlines for document and media editing, which can be synchronized with desktop applications. -Microsoft services for Android represent another set of text / media editing, email, online surfing and collaboration applications. Above all, there are usually Google applications that are normally installed on Android devices, which can be used for storing, editing, and sharing. You can see everything on the developer’s side in the Google Play Store. 5 Most Popular Android Apps for Regular Use in 2018 cc: Lalasticlala, Mynd44 |
