TravelRe: I Need Info Abt Havin Honeymoon In Calabar by optimusprime2(m): 2:19pm On Nov 06, 2012
deepeetop: Hi Nairalanders,

I want to go Calabar for my honeymoon.
Can somebody help me with information on food, recreation centers, affordable hotels, and many vitals needed.

Thanks
Calabar is a great place to spend a honeymoon and it would be very nice if you went during December (yup during the Carnival season) you'd sure have many pleasant memories.
I'm gonna help you out to the best of my Knowledge
Affordable Hotels; Hotels in Calabar apart from Metropolitan/Transcorp Luxury Hotel, Channel View & the Mirage which are 5star rated are generally affordable. You Might want to try(I use * to indicate luxury, affordability- above *** tilts to the hi-side 8k+ for a nite in a regular room, # signifies the location proximity to other general places- above ### signifies quite a distance from general places)
****Monty Suites####=its located along murtala mohammed highway its classy and posh to the core but moderately affordable for its standard.
***Axari hotels####=located along Murtala Mohammed highway, classy, serene environment, and moderately affordable.
***Pyramid Hotels####=along Murtala Mohammed highway, now this hotel is surprisingly affordable for its class what many people dont know.
N.b Murtala Mohammed highway is away from the town, and out of action during Carnival activities but proximity to town is very easy from M/M hiway though from the Highway, its actually a lot closer to TINAPA- Calabars tourist wonder.
****The Anchorage#=located at state housing, around the heart of calabar is posh but moderately affordable.
***Marian Hotels#= located at Marian, the heart of Calabar. its moderately affordable.
Anyway Around state housing/Marian you'll find alot of luxury guest houses and hotels I'd rate *** or **** and the location of Marian is great for going places, transportation will be cheaper and readily available.
Now if you are looking for Rockbottom price hotels but still with Luxury then look these up,
**Ixora hotels###= its kinda hidden behind CRUTECH around Edem Edet off Yellow Duke street but its cheap for its luxury, I recommend this for you, if you want Luxury@ its cheapest. Cant say abt the price exactly but I know its one of the most cheapest Luxury hotels in Calabar and its Location is'nt that bad.
Now I'm done with Luxury hotels, these are still hotels very cheap but hey dont complain about service.
*Bluesea hotel###=located @ Musaha by Ekpo abasi
trust me the price dont get better for a responsible place a honeymooning couple should be lol its ok, but out of action from the main town.
Theres a range of others around Calabar south and Mbukpa.
On food= Ever heard Calabars the home of Food?
Knock yourself out with Afang soup, Edikang Ikong, Ekpangkwokwo, Afia Efere... Gosh just get there for a treat, I'm Salivating simply typing these- and Guess whathuh They are Cheap too 300# will get you a plate you'd fantasize about for yrs, at a local food joint*tip* they taste better at local food Joints. Than places like Amanso

On Recreation; whoa during December, places Virtually call out...
*Marina Resort= the most romantic place to be on your honeymoon, its by the bay so its a wonderful view, you could buy boatrides, history archives at the Slaveroom... Wow I wont be surprised if y'all make babies there too.
*TINAPA= Just go there at all costs if you are in calabar-the place speaks for itself
*UJ Esuene Stadium=during the carnival the stadium hosts lots of activities, shows etc and guess what for FREE!
*Cultural Center= generally Calabar always has shows@ the cultural center but during december the place is turned into whats called the Christmas Village, fun and activities there all thru.
*NAF club= its your honeymoon right? Visit the NAF club either its during Karaoke night or sumfin, go there for the experience with your woman.
*the Churches(if u are Christian), Suya arcade if you are Nothern, the Museum, U know what? check out MBAKARA'S WORLD MAGAZINE on facebook for updates on events and places to be in Calabar.

Hope These helps, Enjoy your Honeymoon.
Hello house. I'm currently serving in ogun state in a sec schl. I applied for a b1/b2 visa to travel for christmas holiday,my appointment is @ d end of nov. my bro nd mum are us citizens nd they have filled for an immigrant visa for me.pls wot documents do I need 2 present @ d interview, nd wot kind of questions would I b asked
Apart from your Passport and appointment info printout which are very important *of course you know that*, carry these documents with you(even though you "May" not be asked during the interview)

*Your Invitation letter
*W2/Tax from the Invitee
*Evidence you are a Corper, I.D or any NYSC'ish document
*you might wanna start organizing your Bankstatement now, to backup the income/salary you filled on your DS 160

You'll be asked the basic questions, like;
What do you do, do you have a job?
Are you married?
You have any kids?
Why are you going to the US?
What are you going to do in the US?
How long do you intend to stay in the US?
Have you travelled outside Nigeria before?
Where do you intend to stay in the US?

But... Your case sounds rather complicated, why?
Because your folks have already filed for an immigrant Visa for you and that sorta defeats the purpose of an NIV(Non Immigrant Visa) in your case, the B1/B2.
Your Immigrant alert is already sounding pretty LOUDLY... Well see what happens. wishing you good luck out there.

davino228: @optimus-prime1............. I guess I made a typo.... My sponsor ain't no family member, just an old friend. shocked
I feel you. Now here's the thing; if you have a relevant Job, you occupy a significant post/responsibility, or you own assets/property that are legally documented... It would put you in a good position to overcome the assumption that you are not an intending immigrant, but in the absence of any of the above... Especially where you now have your friend "IN" the US sponsoring the trip "WHOLLY"_ Unless your friend is probably P.diddy, trust me those Consular officers will raise eyebrows at the purpose of your trip... And the Burden of you overcoming the fact you are'nt an intending immigrant becomes greater on you.
My advice to you, package your presentation well-highlight points that would ensure you'd return to Nigeria, lay emphasis on binding priorities you have here (even if you dont have any) and pRrRraaaaAAaay properly.... Then again you need lots of luck.

davino228: Hi All,

I've got my interview scheduled for Nov 9th @ the US consulate in Abuja,am a masters degree student here in Nigeria & I've got a US citizen as my sponsor who's a family, what are my chances if I may ask? I've only traveled to Ghana before. Need ya'll's advise. grin
These are questions you need to overcome quite convincingly;
Do you have a Job/what do you do in Nigeria thats Significant?
Are you Married?
Do you have Kids?
Do you have an account?
Why do you want to go to the US?
As for your Ghana trip, weeeell it will help(but I wish you had gone to a country that issued a VISA on your PP) anyway adunno but package your Ghana travel experience well if you are asked.
One thing I know is that the US embassy frowns at individuals over 21 still being "wholly" sponsored(its assumed you are a full adult), esp when the Sponsor is in the US... You are to defeat all assumptions that you are not an intending immigrant, and demonstrate strong ties to Nigeria- yep, things that can show you will return. from your lil' case here it seems all your Punch is coming from your family in the US- and trust me that doesnt help issues.
Well, you still have time to rehearse on how to convince the VO.
Oh and one more thing... PRAY HARD.
Good Luck.

Offensive driving 101;
IN A BARRICADE/HOLDUP SITUATION
1-you could go backwards or forward, but stopping is not an option while you are *already* in motion
2-be prepared to bash the car
3-dont be too careful, be prepared to even use a wrong lane
4-Speed has priority
5-Offensive driving is competitive driving, and on no account do you allow anyone overtake you, block if necessary.

PoliticsRe: Car Jacking Epidemic In Abuja??? by optimusprime2(m): 3:12pm On Oct 31, 2012
I mean Its no news cars are being jacked in abuja.
It all boils down to the individuals sense of security... For example;
1-you own a BMW X6 and you choose to drive around@Night with it on lonely roads- habahuh If you dont even attract kidnappers *rule No 1: once its obviously late dont roam around in a flashy car oooo*
2-You own a car without security feautures such as engine immobilizer, tracker, alarm(esp if you own a 1998-2005 toyota Camry or Honda accord-which are more easily hacked and stolen) *c'mon its about time you installed esp an Engine immobilizer and tracker*
3-you normally park outside at your residence in Abuja and you dont own a steering Lock...? What are you, nuts?
4-you drive and you are not concious of vehicles that tail you(women ooo) *those mirrors have use*
5-if you must drive late around wuse II, lonely parts of Maitama, Jikwoyi/Orozo and you aint a *Bhadd* driver, you are OYO
6-highly daring/Offensive driving in Abuja is a necessity (trust me, it saved my uncle once from being car jacked) *moral* dont be a swegbe while driving@ Abj.
7-lastly pleaaaaaze register ur vehicles.

Car TalkRe: Please Which Among These Cars Should I Go For? by optimusprime2(m): 6:10pm On Oct 23, 2012
CRV, Rav4, Highlander... Hmmmmmmm *Pushing up my glasses*
I would recomend Toyota's Highlander because compared to the other two SUV's, its a combo of Luxury, Fuel efficiency, Engine-Power and Terrain performance(well, in terms of Ruggedness, but applies to only 4WD Highlander editions-cuz to me the front wheel drive Highlander is a glorified Camry).
but the Rav4 is the most fuel efficient suv in the group, however it falls short in Luxury and has the smallest engine power output compared to the other two, but is def rugged and CHEAPEST.
Weeeell the CRV's got Luxury, average fuel consumption, average power, average price but has got great handling...
My advice, get the Highlander-period.
Car TalkRe: Front Wheel Drive Vs Rear Wheel Drive; Which Is Better? by optimusprime2(m): 5:23pm On Oct 23, 2012
Wallie: The old argument of push (rear wheel drive) vs. pull (front wheel drive)! Which one is better? It depends on your use.

1. Need more wet traction in a low powered car (less than 300 hp)? Front wheel drive because of the weight of the engine weighing on the tires. If the car is high powered, tires and quality of electronic aids will determine traction.

2. Care only about fuel economy? Front wheel drive because it is usually lighter due to all the drivetrain components being in the front.

3. Your car has more than 300 hp? Rear wheel drive because you won’t get the torque steer and understeer of front wheel drives. Front wheel drives are trying to steer the car while also pulling the car. In a rear wheel drive, the front wheel steers the car and the rear wheel pushes (drives) the car.

4. You are passionate about driving feel? Rear wheel drive because the steering feel is unadulterated.

5. You want the fastest low powered car you can buy? Neither because the actual car, its engine and electronic aids (traction control, dynamic stability control) determines how fast the car will be.

6. You want the fastest high powered car you can buy? Rear wheel drive.

All wheel drive complicates things a little because it gives you more traction but at the expense of more weight and drivetrain losses, which means that all else being equal, it will be slower than a rear wheel drive except when wet.
Wallie pheeew...

Car TalkRe: Fastest Speed You Have Ever Driven: Car, Place, Time? by optimusprime2(m): 12:12pm On Jul 25, 2012
Firstly, I'd like to thank God for delivering me from countless Hi-risk Maneuvers; pheeeeeew many close shaves. I'v learnt my lessons though.

*Warning* contents of this are extremely crazy and I dont advice any driver to try.

First Car I drove; manual trans Peugout 504 GR(I'll never forget that car, as most of my senseless Juvenile acts were commited with it) I was 18yrs old then, used reverse on top speed on the highway in calabar (if the speed meter works on reverse, it would have recorded 80km/h) I decided to use the back as the front, kept going for a while until road safety peeps came up- heck I wanted the chase, after pulling a sharp 180 to right myself, I kept throttling till I hit 160km/h(max speed of the 504 was 180km/h) would'v done more but the car couldnt go any faster, the car was vibrating. Easily Lost them after pulling classic stunts(I realized 504's lack balance, my tires had off roadcontact countless times), but I kept the car home for 3weeks. Fear catch me o.

Others;
Hit full speed with a 1998 Nissan Primera 220km/h
Hit 160km/h with a 1996 Nissan bluebird
Hit 160km/h on a honda babyboy and 1998 civic respectively
Hit 180km/h wif an 05 mitsubishi galant... Trust me on this I know what I'm saying, Japanese cars have poor stability on high speeds, and they are too light.

Reached 140km/h with a diesel 2006 Ford Ranger would'v gone faster but the truck jus couldnt go above 140- anyway trucks drift a lot on hi speeds I dont like that feel

Reached 160km/h on an infiniti fx35- the only somehow stable japanese car I'v met on high speed

Reached 180km/h on a BMW 2004 5series along an expressway in abj- actually BMW's make speeding easy, they are sooo stable on hi speeds and besides the rpm's of beemers are just divine.

Once Did Cal-Uyo in 40mins with a Mazda Tribute, I know I averaged 170km/h mostly- though I realized SUV's have a higher sommersault risk on abrubt maneuvers

kai I don speed for dis life o looooolzzz.
Funny enuf, I'v never crashed a vehicle.

But that was then, when my head was still clapping... I'm a lot responsible now, geez life is good naw.

WTHhuh For Whathuh
Unless one was'nt born in a hospital, Nigerian medical standard has every child innoculated against listed diseases (of which yellow fever is included) and booster shots given until a certain age (I just followed my Vaccine charts).
Should Nigerians abroad have a suspect medic background if theres a breakout of yellow feverhuh Unless theres an epidemic(of which I cant recall W.H.O warn against) I find such scrutiny rather irrelevant,
an insult to our medical standards... Bollocks!
Car TalkRe: Cheap Cars For Low Income Earners? by optimusprime2(m): 2:48pm On Jul 04, 2012
afrobaby: From all have been reading, can I conclude that automatic cars are more expensive to maintain than manual cars, please enlighten me o
Afrobaby,
reasons why manual drives are prefared over automatics on low budgets;
1-*major reason*manuals are more fuel efficient than automatics, hence cheaper to run.
2-unlike Used manual cars, a "used" automatic car stands the higher risk of having transmission problems sooner or later(esp honda's) its best buying a fairly new automatic or brandnew automatic- so you can avoid heartbreak. "Those who know understand what I mean".
3-a manuals powertrain is less complicated than an automatics powertrain making manuals cheaper to fix if there are transmission faults.
4-automatic transmission systems have a higher tendency of transaxle damage than manual transmission.
5-if you are too broke to call in a mechanic, try pushing an automatic to start if it stallscheesy
Car TalkRe: Cheap Cars For Low Income Earners? by optimusprime2(m): 9:59am On Jul 04, 2012
Bro ur best bet for cheap cars is at cotonou, I promise you I know peeps who have bought nice cars(in good states) for reeeeally cheap prices at cotonou, but make proper inquiries about the state of the car or extra costs when bringing the car across d border...contact a person who's been doing it.
Anyway, You cud get a good manual transmission Audi 80 model wif 400k, 400k+ cud also get u a gud toks opel Vectra also manual transmission, VW's golf 3-Jetta 3, is within range, so is Nissans Micra, Sunny and Primera, Toyotas 95 Carina is included, if you are ready to put up wif retro "Benz issues" a 190benz is within range wif 400k+, BMW's 94 3 series is a good car and its within reach at 400k ... I mean I'm just saying, but your options could be increased when you get there you never can tell, but I advice if ur income is low, just stay off automatic transmission cars...

I'm just saying.

Car TalkRe: Pros And Cons Of Honda Accord 2007 by optimusprime2(m): 12:46am On Jun 25, 2012
Escalated: Good posts and topic here. I am in same dilemma either to take this Discussion continue Honda or 2006/06 Camry. Can anyone pop into this plssssssss
It depends on what you are looking for as a driver, as per style et al...
Personally because of how I drive(I love Acceleration/power in a car), I prefer the Honda EX-L "07 to the 06/07 Camry due to sheer Engine power*that initial takeoff*
1- the Honda Accord Unleashes 268horsepower of its V6 while the V6 edition of the 06/07 Camry pops out just 158horsepower(probably because the Camry's engine was designed for fuel efficiency)
2- The Honda EX-L has a bigger engine 3.5 liter, compared to any of Camry's 2.0, 2.2 or 2.4 liter engine editions.

Apart from the engine/power where the Honda EX-L clearly outmatches the Camry, the interior of the Honda is cooler than the Camry- it boasts of a more intersting Dashboard, theres that pilot feel, like you are in the Cockpit of a plane, complicated looking lights and buttons. The Camry's dashboard is rather boring generally, especially at night; that mono flourescent green backlight is sooo dull.

But where the Camry has an edge over the Honda is its fuel Efficiency(for those who use the AC and constantly look at the fuel guage) all I can say is the Camry is about one of the best fuel efficient cars I know.
Secondly a 06/07 Camry is cheaper than the Honda EX-L 07 (Camry's are cheaper than Accords basically).
Thirdly, auto parts for a Toyota Camry in Nigeria are cheap, and available- Honda parts are relatively available, but not that cheap(compare the prices of some parts in both cars and you'l understand what I mean).
Not to forget, it seems regular Nigerian Mechanics prefer fixing Camry's to Honda Accord's esp the EX-L's, because they say the Camry's Engine is more straight forward. So if you have a Camry, you are less likely to have beefs with regular mechanics. A Honda EX-L requires a pretty advanced mechanic, or else.
On Character defects;weeell, to me the 06/07 Camry has little issues with the braking system no matter what you do, I dunno why, I drive fast so I know what it means when you need urgent brakes.
The EX-L like all Accords should have its front shaft/Tire rod ends checked regularly to prevent what I'd term "The Honda Surprise" and secondly proper driving habits make your transmission system in a Honda Accord live long.
Generally both cars are awesome machines, but like I said it depends on what you are looking for in a car.
Car TalkRe: Pros And Cons Of Honda Accord 2007 by optimusprime2(m): 12:06am On Jun 24, 2012
thomasjohn: pls make una offer advice naw, wat can any1 say about d EX-L.
Wat are the pros, cons, maintenance, durability. . .etc
Weeeeell it all depends on the state of the car when bought from the dealers, in order to experience optimal performance- but I tell you, if your dealer hands you the keys to a Honda Accord Ex-L thats in top condition... Its drivin' in luxury and style all thru.
Though you need to change the oil as required, but I promise you, that car's engine is "RELIABLE" except for minor touchups like brakepads you should'nt visit mechanics like dat for maintenance issues. But *Note* after everywhile have ur tire rod ends and front shafts checked- to avoid A standard issue Honda accord "surprise", dis is 3yrs of experience.
The car is fuel efficient- but if Efficiency is what you are desiring in a car of that category, I suggest you go for Toyota's Camry, but the Honda packs more power under the hood than the Camry(those who'v travelled long distances with both cars 'll know what I'm saying).
but jus so you'd know, the 09 model of the accord EX-L is more fuel efficient than the 07, so you might wanna go for the 09, if u can.
All I can say is read thru the owners manual very well and you would'nt regret buying the car.
And oh when you get it, try not to Bash it.
Just Drive.
