Nairaland General › Rccg:pastor Adeboye Bans Mini-skirt, Trousers, Gold Trinket In Church by osifred(op): 10:48pm On Jun 01, 2010
Pastors of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Nigeria have started enforcing the dress code for all worshipers handed down by the General Overseer of the Church, Pastor Enoch Adeboye. The GO, as Adeboye is called by the teeming worshipers, had announced recently that women must not wear gold trinkets, artificial hair and trousers and short skirts to church.

He also banned women and men from colouring or bleaching their hair when they are coming to church. P.M.NEWS gathered that pastors in the various parishes of the church have started implementing the strict dress code, starting with the church workers.

A member of the church who is also a senior worker in one of the parishes confirmed that the pastors are enforcing the ban among the church workers. The church worker, who pleaded for anonymity, said the pastors started with the church workers because they are directly supervising the workers.

He said the pastors cannot force the larger congregation to abide by the new dress code because worshippers, especially first timers, voluntarily went there to worship. According to him, “new worshippers who unknowingly flout the dress code will definitely change by the time they listen to what the pastor preaches from the pulpit. Changing their mode of dressing is a gradual process.”

The strict dress code has been criticised in some quarters and described as too conservative, considering the fact that in some Pentecostal churches, female members are allowed to wear trousers and artificial hair to church. In those churches, women and even men bleach their hair while while some men also wear earing in one of thier ears.

In chris Okotie’s Household of God, Chris Oyakhilome’s Christ Embassy, and in Paul Adefrasin’s House on The Rock Church, it is fashionable for women to wear trousers and short skirts to church. It is this freedom to wear anything that makes these churches the place to be for youths on Sundays.

As culled from PM News.

Politics › Re: Police Arrests Donald Duke- Must They Arrest Like This? by osifred(m): 1:12pm On May 30, 2010
Duke took time to answer d question himself on 123next

I have followed the genuine comments that have flowed from this story. Everyone who has commented here is excercising his/her fundamental rights to free speech and I don't begrudge that. But let me be put on record about what transpired yesterday in Calabar. I was NOT ARRESTED BY THE POLICE in Calabar as this story has portrayed. I am not above the law, the police came to enforce an exparte order issued by an Akamkpa High Court. As a lawyer, even a layman knows that Calabar Municipality where the ceremony held is beyond the Akamkpa court's jurisdiction. Regardless, I had to out of courtesy and as a law abiding citizen opted to step in on behalf of my wife, Onari, and clarify issues with the Commissioner of Police and this didn't last more than about 20 minutes and I was back to venue. Please also note that, the health facility is being promoted by my dear wife Onari, so how could I have been arrested? If anyone needed be arrested, it is my wife not me and commonsense or logic should have cautioned the reporter not to insinuate as he did. I was a guest at the occassion, ditto other local and international dignitaries, including officials from the World Health Organisation(WHO), Shell, Mikano, Wampco, NAIRDA, Flour Mills etc. As the reporter rightly pointed out, the police first accosted my wife and then I stepped in to intervene. The reason being that, my wife, as host would not have abandoned the ceremony to accompany the police to see the CP; that would have further jeopardised the flow of the event and embarrassed her guests and ruined everything. So for stepping forward, is it now fair to interprete it that I was arrested? Now to the real issues. I would want us, especially those resident in our country to go round the council areas nationwide, assess and tell me the state of the NRC/SDP party secretariats today. When my wife mooted the idea of this project, a place to host it became a major challenge. Although the current building was abandoned and in a parlous state of disuse just like others nationwide, rather than appropriating the property, it was decided that a 25 year lease be taken on the property. What it means is that, regardless of what you invest there, the property remains that of the state. What is the benefit of this project? It is verifiable that through the help of the US Embassy, the hospital has been able to attract support from the world acclaimed Susan Koerman Breast Cancer Foundation and other international donors. In Nigeria, the project is being supported by SHELL, FLOUR MILLS,UBA, WAMPCO, NETCOM,AP,NOKIA,TRIQUEST,DELTA AFRIK, MONI PULO, JAGAL, EXXON MOBIL, ACERGY, FIRST BANK, SHLUMBERGER, MIKANO, CHEVRON and SAHARA. It has NOT benefitted from state funds under my watch. So far, in the entire South South, its facilities are unequalled. And as a not-for-profit non-governmental organisation, majority of its services targetted at women and children are absolutely free. Where does this leave us? Do I hold the state government responsible? No. But let me be clear here, this facility is not out to compete with whatever health programmes or facilities the state government is contemplating, if anything, it is to complement those efforts. I hope and pray that even with this confusion, we can still find a way, work together to benefit our people. Thank you. Donald

Health › Re: Does Alcohol Contribute Anything To The Body. by osifred(m): 2:09pm On May 28, 2010
Studies show, for example, that health benefits only come with moderate drinking and are greatest for older men. And even moderate drinking is not recommended for women who are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant, or for people who are under 21.

The strongest medical evidence exists for the link between moderate drinking and a reduced risk of heart disease.

Dr. Kenneth Mukamal, an internist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and assistant professor at Harvard Medical School in Boston, was the lead author of a New England Journal of Medicine study examining the roles of drinking patterns and heart disease that found, after 12 year of follow-up, that men who consumed alcohol between three and seven days a week had fewer heart attacks than men who drank once a week.

Below, Mukamal discusses the risk and benefits of moderate drinking.

Do we know why moderate drinking lowers heart disease risk? We think that a lot of the benefits of alcohol are on the blood vessels and on blockages in the arteries to the heart and to the brain. This might be related to alcohol's effect on the good cholesterol, the HDL cholesterol.

In fact, alcohol affects HDL levels just about as strongly as any other lifestyle factor. People also think that alcohol may lower heart attack risk by acting as a blood thinner.

What are some of the other health benefits associated with moderate drinking? A wide variety of health effects have been attributed to moderate drinking. A lower risk of diabetes has been seen in women and men.

There actually have been experiments done in which alcohol was administered over a couple of months to people without diabetes. In those studies, most of which have been conducted in women interestingly, it looks like moderate drinking improves the body's sensitivity to insulin.

It may actually lower insulin levels altogether and may prevent diabetes through that mechanism.

More recently we've done some work on moderate drinking and dementia. We looked at a group of older adults in the United States - average age was in the mid-70s - and found a reduced risk.

There has been some more work in slightly younger populations from Europe, and those studies have fairly consistently suggested that older adults who were drinking moderately may have a lower risk of dementia. We're not exactly sure what the mechanisms may be behind that.

Some of it may very well be because drinking tends to occur in social settings and just the process of getting out and socializing may be an important way to prevent dementia.

There is also evidence that moderate drinking may prevent silent strokes or other subtle types of brain injury that we know over time can predispose to dementia. I think it's still an area where we need some more investigation.

of course. . . . . . . . .  it can happen to anyone, anywhere in the world AND you can be mistreated even worse in your home country!
take your pick:
- not getting promoted because i wasnt British. UK
- getting stopped by the cops excessively because they automatically think most black people dont drive nice cars unless they are stolen. France
- people saying to my face that they hate black people. . . . . . . .but not MY kind of black, only the "aborigene" kind of black! Australia
- parents of my ex gf disowning her and beating her like a little child because she was dating a black man.China
- being stripped and searched every single time i landed at Oslo airport.Norway
- being refused entrance to clubs of SaoPaulo/Rio and then allowed to enter these same clubs after i proved, by showing my passport, that i wasnt brasilian.Brazil
- being punched in the face by a drunk SOB and almost being locked up just because i was walking with a local woman on each arm and acting a fool. Poland
but its not really "injustice, its called grin

Politics › Re: Obj Is Bad Yes, But He's Still Nigeria's Best Ever President. No Contest by osifred(m): 9:19pm On May 24, 2010
i have and will continue to hold unless proved otherwise that OBJ is d best 9ja president ever.
due to time constrain and dat i dont wanna write lenghthy story i will limit it to being democratic

a good leader is judge by his democratic tenet,OBJ assumed military head of state at a time when doze in the army were crazy abt power he became d first of his kind to relinguish power to a civilian president. shehu shagari causing an interruption of about 13yrs of military rule.

he was jailed by Abacha because abacha fear he was among pple ploting a coup to remove him, d enemy of my enemy is my friend . meaning if OBJ was trying to unsettle Nigerian no one enemy then he is a friend of 9jarian.

to demostrate how democratic his man is during d 3rd term saga he stil had d interest of NIgerian at heart unlike other african leader dat would prefer to fight to d finish by using milatancy to remain in power.when he sense d pple didnt want he gave up to their reqest inorder to ensure dat nigeria remain in peace.

again in 2007 he came d 1st,2nd and only nigerian president to hand over power from one civilian government to another.

to further strength dis he influence d emergence of yaradua at a time wen it was obvious dat corrupt politician like odili, atiku, ibb, buhari would have emerge president. yaradua like we know is d best president nigerian never witness.

despite dis weakness i refer to him as the father of modern day nigeria democracy
