If I were the woman,I don't know if I'll be so keen on marrying a man that will basically dissociate from his family because of me.
I can imagine when the honey moon is over, next thing the man will tell you how he should have listened to his parents.
FamilyRe: . by osisi5: 2:33am On Jan 26, 2008
do they dislike this girl just becuse she's Igbo or is there anything else?
If not, your mom is a typical tribalist and may never change.
Are you prepared to marry a wife and cut off all ties with your family ?
What do her parents say?
Because believe me no parents of any girl would gladly give their daughter to a man  with such close minded parents and siblings.

We all know in our culture a married woman basically has married her inlaws too.
This girl will be miserable in the midst of your family members, would not want them near her and her children.
May not want to even dring "pure water" from them for fear of juju.
She may not want them at the wedding, naming ceremonies,or any gatherings and pretty soon,it will hurt you too.
You may think love will take care of it,but honey, love is not the answer here.

My advice.

1.Talk to an aunt, uncle, close relative, family friend who can understand your dilemma
2.Tell them in all sincerity how you feel about this girl
3.go with them to your parent's house and plead your case.

I would not advice you to marry any girl without your parent's consent.
You need their blessings.
Your siblings are totally inconsequential in the matter.
I wonder how your mom was able to get your dad on the "hating corner" that is rather strange.
A man is usually the head of the home.

I wish you the best.
TravelRe: Passengers Exchange Blows In Moving Airplane by osisi5: 2:11am On Jan 26, 2008
I-man:
The most interesting part of this story is the sheer irony. The greatest danger to the flight was not caused by the fellow using the phone but the complete idiot who decided to confront him.

How many fights do we have on airplanes in the West? No civilised person will seek to start a fight over the usage of phones, just remember that there is no evidence of their supposed danger .

Are you saying that people don't leave their phones on in the West?Remember, the supposed danger to the plane doesn't come from the act of speaking on the phone but from leaving your phone on.There are billions of passengers using airplanes annually,at least 10% leave their phones on,how many planes have crashed as a result?

The stupid thing is that the man on the phone may not have been the only person whose phone was on in that plane.Maybe our safety vigilante should have confronted every person on the flight to check their phones.Complete stupidity.

I quite loved the supreme irony in people attacking the "uncultured" fellow who had the audacity to talk on his phone. With the usual inane laments about the incivility of the average Nigerian.Strange thing is,nobody demonstrated greater incivility than the vigilante who confronted the supposed miscreant.

Disregarding rules might be a problem in Nigeria but the greater problems we have are ignorance, illogic and boneheaded confrontationists.
I-man with all the plane crashes in Nigeria,I'm surprised people didn't jump the guy and give him a thorough beating.
Didn't you hear what happened to someone that said he had a bomb in a coach bus shortly after 9/11 ?
The passengers in the bus nearly killed the guy before the police rescued him.
At least they wanted to make sure he saw stars before he blew anyone up.
If I were there,I would have used the heels of my shoes generously.

RomanceRe: Advantages Of Polygamy? by osisi5: 1:18am On Jan 26, 2008
The second, third, fourth and fifth adult   wives of course don't mind polygamy, they went into it with eyes wide open.
Has anyone here considered the effect of this selfish arrangement on the first wife?
Was her consent sought? or her opinions don't matter?

Which wife woman  looks at her husband and with a broad smile and blinking eyes says ,

"honey,I cannot wait for the day Ngozika, memuna and aishatu join us on this matrimonial bed."

                                            or

"honey, you are just too much,I cannot wait to share you with a bunch of other women"

I found this article from Malaysia,an interesting reading that buttresses the fact that the only person that stands to gain anything in polygamy is the randy man in the middle and no one else.

Read the statement in red,it captures it all. There are no first wives anywhere begging their husbands to get her some co-wives.

One politician — a male — is so enthusiastic about the practice that he wants women who allow their husbands to marry a second wife to receive medals of honour.

Women, however, don't seem too keen on the medals.

"We want the legal system to restrict the practice of polygamy," Ruzana Udin, the spokesperson for Sisters In Islam (SIS), told AFP.

The government of northern Perlis state has announced that it will do away with the need to obtain a first wife's written consent to a second marriage to stop men flocking across the border to marry again in less-restrictive Thailand.

The Minister of Women and Family Development, Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, called the move an insult to women.

Another northern state, Terengganu, is preparing to issue legislators with undated letters authorising them to take another wife at any time.

That idea seems to have left the women speechless with rage, while men who are not elected representatives might be wondering why they are left out of such an easing of the rules.

"We feel that in this day and age, polygamy is no longer necessary," Women's Aid Organisation (WAO) executive secretary Ivy Josiah told AFP.

"The Holy Quran allowed it in limited circumstances and contexts. But it is now time to debate its necessity."

Some men, such as Johor state legislator Ali Shikh Ahmad, who proposed the medals of honour for willing wives, say polygamy helps solve social problems, for example by giving single mothers a chance of marriage.

But this argument is dismissed by Sisters in Islam.

"It doesn't solve social ills, it doesn't help single mums at all," said spokesperson Ruzana. "Most children who live with polygamy suffer because their fathers are too preoccupied with their other wives to be properly involved in their upbringing.

"It's ridiculous when polygamy is touted as a solution to social ills when it clearly does the opposite."

Ruzana said the Prophet Muhammad did not encourage polygamy, contrary to popular belief in Muslim society.

"The Prophet did not even allow his daughter's husband to practice it

WAO's Josiah said that in the modern age, where women have access to education and employment, all polygamy was unnecessary.

The outdated practice also constituted a form of mental abuse, creating fear and insecurity in women who live with polygamy.

"I have yet to receive a call from a woman saying she is happy that her husband has married again," she said

@wesleyanA,

Good questions. My Dad visited us each time he had time off work. Most of us were in boarding schools and he used to come visit during visiting days if there was no clash or he would send someone. During the hols we all went to his for holidays, so i did get to see my siblings often. My parents loved each other to the best of my knowledge, there is no standard formular for love, people love differently as you must know by now. My parents were married under Native customary law before my siblings and i were born. My Mum happens to be the last wife out of the three. She had a failed marriage before my Dad. Very polygamous family you may say, but i really cannot complain over what i cannot change. I have half brothers and sisters and step brothers and sister. I absolutely enjoyed every bit of my childhood and i have no regrets whatsoever, if given the opportunity i would ask for the same family in my next life.

I would not say am an advocate for polygamy, but i must say polygamy is not the root of the problems we have today in Africa, i think its Man's wickedness to Man. We have sold our souls for material gains. Polygamy is not the root of the ills of our nation today but Corruption. I have seen monogamous union with enough problems to last a life time, issues that were never raised in my very polygamous family.

Afterall  if the white man never came to Africa, we would have continued with all our traditions perfectly well without knowing any ills. Polygamy still very much exist and will forever remain, it does not matter how educated we are or how rich or religious we think we are, men and women are polygamous by nature it takes the grace of God to curb it. I donot judge those practicing it for i do not know their situations, people go into it for different reasons, some in search of the fruit of the womb others money, power, security, love, happiness etc

Whichever situation you find yourself just be Happy and live the best of it. The same bible some of you are quoting also says: WHO ARE WE TO JUDGE????
I know you didn't address me but I have one question.
Judging from your excellent reviews about polygamy, would you have any qualms on being the 3rd wife of a terrific man someday?

or worse still would you like to be that first wife put in a "sharing position"

I AM FROM A POLYGAMOUS FAMILY. i am happy about it, i am prou of my father. if there is something i will request for in another world i will ask for the same family setting. for hotfunmi and the rest of them stop your blackmail and pretence, a man can not stay with only one woman for a long time ,a man is polygamous by nature, every animal is. Why break your wife's heart after your death when she discovers she's not the only mother of your children, why not bring the other woman home and marry her properly.

Let me tell you that it is not easy for a man with 4 wives to cheat continually or he must need to take performance enhancer, unlike a man with a wife who he is tired of marking her register and whose roamy instruments would still be angry.

Hotfunmi is a woman i understand they don't like other women to come into their homes, thats why she is screaming and employing all sort of blackmail mechanism. i am from a polygamous family, we all happy, very close,we are muslims, and very educated, at least if Phds and masters are considered good education, and my father is not extremely rich. I support it for those who wants to do it without apology to no bagger!

A Nice Poem

They lie on the table side by side -

The Holy Quran and the TV Guide.
One is well worn and cherished with pride.
Not the Quran, but the TV Guide.
One is used daily to help folks decide.
Not the Quran, but the TV Guide.
As the pages are turned, what shall they see?
Oh, what does it matter, turn on the TV
So they open the book in which they confide.
No, not the Quran, but the TV Guide.
The Word of Allah is seldom read.
Maybe a verse before they fall into bed.
Exhausted and sleepy and tired as can be.
Not from reading the Quran, from watching TV
So then back to the table side by side,
Lie the Holy Quran and the TV Guide.
No time for prayer, no time for the Word,
The plan of Istiqama is seldom heard.
But forgiveness of sin, so full and free,
Is found in the Quran, not on TV

Take 60 seconds & give this a shot! Let's just see
if Satan stops this one.
All you do is -

1) say:

A- Subhan Allah
B- Alhamdulila
C- Allahu Akbar
D- La ilaha ila Allah Mohammad rasool Allah
E- Allahuma sali aala sayidna Mohammad wa ala alihi
Wasahbihi wasal'um

@+Osisi: Its always nice that you understand Yoruba, when it serves your purpose. I am rofl at your expense. Could you serve me then how you reconcile the Torah (Old testament) Deut. 6 Verse 4 and the Bible (New testament) Mark 12 Verse 29, both on one hand talking about Lord being One God, (Remember that Jesus is the speaker in the Mark Verse), versus the 3 in 1 God deal in the same Bible(New testament)? And the speaker in 3 for 1 deal was not Jesus. Who is to be believed, Jesus or the other guy, the speaker in the NT, after Jesus had been raised up, unable to speak for himself, rebuking the the crew who brought up the 3 for 1 material evidence? Which side of the fence are you on, sis? Head you lose, tail you lose. Whatever side you choose, you will be against the Bible, (the New Testament or Good News!)

Some Yoruba friends of mine and me, will pick up an authentic oral tradition old Igbo language only story. Each will write it down in his own style in Yoruba language as Yoruba versions of this authentic Igbo story! I pray when the Hausas and Tivs, and Nupes and even Wollofs and some Maurirania Fulanis, Soyinkes of Senegal, and even Bambara from Mali read our 'Yoruba renditions,' of this Igbo Masterpiece, they would not notice the variations of our corresponding sentences. We actually should be able pass these Yoruba Versions as if they are authentic. The Old Igbo storytellers in the Igbo Villages, the arochukwus or umochukwus should not be able to tell the differences between the Igbo language originals and the yoruba many versions!

If I can just arrange it like that +Osisi. Is that possible? Think about it. Loosely, this is the same condition with Qur'an in pure Arabic and the English Versions, or versions in any other language(s).
Your analogy here does not fit the Bible.

Biblically Speaking, most are from th same Manuscripts, some are from older Bibles from the same manuscripts.
Whether in Igbo, fufulde or ogoni dialect, all Bibles everywhere preach the exact same message.
That Christ died on the cross for your sins and will come again as the King of Kings.
If you find any authentic Bible without this message, let us know.

every ill you have ascribed to polygamy also exists in monogamous homes. stop using specious arguments.

instead of listening, you should read. did you know that thomas jefferson, one of the founding fathers of the us carried on a relationship with a slave named sally jennings and she had several children by him?
maybe if we want to be a great nation ( like the united states) we should follow jefferson's example and  be in monogamous marriages and have several children by the hired help tongue
typical mindset of an Islamic upbringing
Did Thomas Jefferson  impregnate his hired help because he could not have 3 other wives to impregnate or because he was adulterous?
Or are you telling me that men with countless wives are immune from running after other women and impregnating them after they've locked up their wives in "akwule"?
Polygamy is unhealthy for anyone and in this age of HIV,a man dipping his joystick in 4 or 5 women unprotected ought to be denounced.
I don't care what they are to him
And a woman allowing herself to be "dipped" knowing that the joystick freely dips into 3 or 4 other known  women ought to get her head examined.
I said known women, remember ther's still a chance the man sees others and the other wives could also be seeing others.

The chances of contracting something almost equals that of a prostitute

The risks are too numerous to ignore

The world is now a totally different place than our grandfather's

It's the little girls, some as young as 9 that are basically forced into these arrangements that I have the most sympathy for not the grown wives of a rich Alhaji.

Polygamy is generally evil.
Slice it whichever way you want,it has absolutely no advantages in today's soceity.

I can see that most of the people beating others over the head when they talk ill of polygamy are Muslims, that's not an accident.
Their religion condones multiple "wives" but the question is what are the advantages of such?

A lady earlier had told us of her happy and rich polygamous home where her father had 3 wives in different geographical locations and provided for them excellently,I don't wish to bash her, another poster already asked her some key questions.
Which child would prefer a visiting father?
A  father that'll breeze in and out at will.
A father that may miss birthdays, her award ceremonies in school and a father that may not be there to help take care of her when she's sick ?

Most of the women that go into this  sort of union are poor and uneducated
Some are even bethroted to men their fathhers age before ever they reach menarche.
It's insane.

It's impossible for a man to treat 2 women the same let alone 4,polygamy may have served it role when we farmed yams and cocoyams and hands were needed on the farm,it is now useless.
For those who argue that women are more in number than men,it's not your duty to save the womenfolk.
Marry your own wife, not wives and stick to her alone.
Afterall marriage is not compulsory.

If it's not in line with the Bible,it's definitely not of God
and if you' are a student of the Bible and have the Spirit indwelling ,you will know when someone is out of line.

For instance,if a preacher tells his congregation that God says everyone in there have to give an offering of $300 so that he can protect them in the year 2008
You'll know that was not God,we never have to buy our blessings and protection if so the poor will be left out
His mercies are freely given.
Now we can sow a seed and believe for a harvest, that is different and that is also done willingly.

Christianity EtcRe: Under What Situation Is Divorce Acceptable by osisi5: 6:43pm On Jan 24, 2008
darfur:
if my wife cheat on me, i go revenge. i'll go and hire an ashawo grin or two ashawos grin grin
and sleep with them in our room.
after that we re-new our marital vows. decide if we still want to be together.

sometimes revenge is not an act of wickedness but an idea to show the other person the intensity of the pain he/she caused. cool

we can then decide to divorce amicably. as for forgiveness, the easiest way to do that is to know that i'm also guilty of the same offence cool
we'll forgive ourselves
May God deliver you in Jesus' name
