Let it not be like Mulan that I used my last GB to download and later turned out to be a huge disappointment. |
obixcel:Damn Nigger, Black Widow is out. |
Learning coding is good but computer science will make u a better programmer. Check out OSSU, open source society university, a complete computer science curriculum for self study. See here on github: https://github . com/ossu/computer-science#prerequisites |
The mean reversion strategy is still doing well, I haven't been able to make another as good as that one. Up 45% (probably more, given that I exited mansard earlier so avoiding some % reduction) since January. The latest stock is CHIPLS, was the worst performing stock from high last month closing at 0.6. Now at 0.71, with a decent 16% profit. I also want to mention that slippage is also an issue, not been able to get these stocks at advised price. My test 1 mil is now 1.48 mil, not bad. |
dpacificheraclx:Money flow can't be quantified, as such, my earlier work was plain wrong. You would need to know at what price each seller bought her stocks to actually come up with a measure of money flow. Not an easy task. For example, a stock like zenith has several billion share but just a few thousand units can move its value (like d opposite of elections, a few members can decide the fate for billion of others). Thus, even while a stock is dropping value it may be experiencing cash inflow. In other words, the exchange value of a stock can only be known to an individual after the sale of such stock. Instead of computing money flow I would rather compute total exchanged cash over a Period(a month maybe) and use that to rank stocks by desirability. This shit is Crazy. ![]() |
![]() Full disclosure, I am yet to fully understand the usefulness of d computation above though, working on it ![]() |

Loki makes sense die. After watching episode 4 I realized that I would easily fall in luv with a female version of myself living in an alternate time line, totally. It seems that like poles repel analogy doesn't apply to humans? |

Lazyyouth4u:People live in thier vehicles if u have one lol, if you are down on ur luck you can manage train stations, use public gym for baths. Life goes on, if you know your way, u can get free food, dumpster diving. Free clothes too, some religious organizations like caritas give very good clothes and shoes. Lol, d shit some people go through to live abroad eh |
I saw this topic on front page: "Photos Of The 3-Bedroom Apartment Chioma Ajunwa Got From Lagos Government - Sports - Nairaland". I wonder how much would such a flat be worth? Does it come with maintenance fees? I understand u pay and own it. Asking for a friend. ![]()

emmanuelewumi:Other factors like - Inflation and credit ratings, supply and demand, market sentiments, stocks. |
ojesymsym:Face value is the money amount the bond will be worth at maturity; it is also the reference amount the bond issuer uses when calculating interest payments. For example, say an investor purchases a bond at a premium $1,090 and another investor buys the same bond later when it is trading at a discount for $980. When the bond matures, both investors will receive the $1,000 face value of the bond. The coupon rate is the rate of interest the bond issuer will pay on the face value of the bond, expressed as a percentage. For example, a 5% coupon rate means that bondholders will receive 5% x $1000 face value = $50 every year. Coupon dates are the dates on which the bond issuer will make interest payments. Payments can be made in any interval, but the standard is semiannual payments. The maturity date is the date on which the bond will mature and the bond issuer will pay the bondholder the face value of the bond. The issue price is the price at which the bond issuer originally sells the bonds. |
Hello guys, pls mention some good shows that premiered or returned to screen in d last 30 days. I have been very busy. Thanks. Note that I know about lucifer and loci. |

DrAwo:Oga, I never berated buy&hold, it is very effective cos in the long run good coys go up. But, inbetween a lot goes on... Regarding time spent on running strategy is almost insignificant. The strategy is semi-automatic. A computer code does the hard part. I only need to close/open position every monthending with my broker and feed the program with data(which is pretty quick on my mobile). |
Let me show u what is alpha in practical terms. Again, let's take zenith as case study. 1. I buy 1 share of zenith in 2012 for #12.47(on first of February 2012, dat is how far back my data goes) 2. The total dividend paid within the period to date is #18.17(please correct me if am wrong) 3. I have no ideas if Zenith had had splits from 2012 to date so I assume none. 4. As at friday Zenith closed at #23.7 5. Total gain is (23.7-12.47)+18.17 =29.4 6. I made 29.4/12.47= 2.35 my initial investment from buy&hold. 7. Ok, my mean reversion strategy tested on the same data input did more than 5 times initial investment. 8. You can argue that I may not get into the market at adviced prices by my strategy due to slippage so I knock off 1 times. So, I get 4 times my initial investment. Mind u that I was not even compounding my returns. I am not bragging or something as I have nothing to gain from that, but my strategy holds alpha. Is buy&hold a bad way to go? Definitely not, I also have funds that yield dividends. Just that where d money is made handsomely is in deploying trading strategies. Now, I want to rest my case abeg, believe what ever u like. |
emmanuelewumi:What most of these guys do is investing in indexes, it is practically buy & hold of selected stocks and dividends. Nothing fancy. Traders on the other hand are a different type of people. If u do indept research u will come to understand that to be a successful trader requires that u beat these indexes. A good trader is one that has alpha, returns more than d index. |
emmanuelewumi:Ok, I suggest u hand over ur portfolio to ur 12 year old. ![]() |
emmanuelewumi:Lol, and yet valuation is a topic taught at undergrad level in finance. Most of these guys oversimplify what they really do so they can sell their books. Or maybe you are one of those guys that consider advanced education useless. What is d point, we can all stop our education at js3, that's it! |
Biafran4life:Oga, let me start with that I don't claim to be an expert in these matters. I feel that our small forum, NSEMPA, is lacking in a lot of ways. Cos, spending some time on reddit and other foreign forums opened my eyes to what it really takes to trade in ways similar to what professionals do. Apart from a few individuals on this forum, most of the discussions held here are elementary or primitive, lol. I hope u look beyond this forum and see for ur self. In my limited view, 98% are buy&hold who use fundamentals to select investments. The rest are just tagging along. And yes, traders, that is people who depend on shorter time market inefficiencies need math beyond addition and subtraction. A good knowledge of introductory statistics and probability is very useful. Well, once again, if u do more of trading than buy & hold, I suggest u also check out other foreign forums. |
Why are risk measures useful? I think it is a useful metric to both buy and hold investors and shorter term traders. As a buy and hold investors it could be beneficial during the screening process. Highly volatile stocks are inherently more risky. Stocks that have their price bounce all over the place are less desirable. Astute investor use it all the time to adjust their exposure to downside risks by adjusting there cash in d market as a whole or in individual stocks. For a traders (I am aspiring to be ), those guys that trade well formulated and tested strategies, risk measure are particularly useful. For example, sharpe ratio can tell you how effecient your returns are while taking volatility and risk free investments(Tbills, Omo, goverment bonds etc) into consideration. After all, there is no point trading if you can make better returns risk free.It is good practice reviewing your past trades and generate performance metrics as well, you may think you are winning when in fact you are not, opportunity cost in mind. Also, testing trading ideas on past data is very important. As someone who has some exposure to engineering practices, we do it all the time. We run simulations - civil engineers run simulations of structural members(Staapro, Tekla, Navis Works, etc.) before they go out and start construction. Electrical engineers run simulations of distribution networks (Etap, Skm eg) before implementation. Why some people think they can just deploy trading ideas without proper analysis beat me all d time. |
uzoexcel:Here are some quotes from investopedia Volatility: Volatility is a statistical measure of the dispersion of returns for a given security or market index. In most cases, the higher the volatility, the riskier the security. Volatility is often measured as either the standard deviation or variance between returns from that same security or market index. Value at Risk (VaR): Value at risk (VaR) is a statistic that measures and quantifies the level of financial risk within a firm, portfolio or position over a specific time frame. This metric is most commonly used by investment and commercial banks to determine the extent and occurrence ratio of potential losses in their institutional portfolios. Risk managers use VaR to measure and control the level of risk exposure. One can apply VaR calculations to specific positions or whole portfolios or to measure firm-wide risk exposure. Sharpe Ratio: The Sharpe ratio was developed by Nobel laureate William F. Sharpe and is used to help investors understand the return of an investment compared to its risk. The ratio is the average return earned in excess of the risk-free rate per unit of volatility or total risk. Volatility is a measure of the price fluctuations of an asset or portfolio. |
Catfishing:Why did you switch your gender? I liked your intellect even when your moniker was male. Pls stop confusing us bachelors in d house . When I am in d flirting mood I want to be sure I am exchanging banters with a real female not some hairy dude. Note that I dont have a problem with you flipping monikers like pancakes. ![]() |
Topson88:This a strategy and like any other strategy it should be thoroughly tested on past market data. So, you either pay someone to run the analysis or you do it your self. If you choose to do it your self then I can give you some pointers. 1. First and foremost, get past data, in the form of opening and closing prices for both stocks. 2. Backtest ur strategy on the collected data. U can do simple backtest with excel, if you know how to write code, python or C are good choices. Just saying, to avoid biased info. Plus, past patterns don't guaranty future patterns. Meaning that while you are at it you should device a solid risk management. |
yMcy56: ![]() Which one is better?
|
Oh! Lest I forget, we also have a particular set of minority - the town criers e.g Mcy56 ![]() Note that e.g stands for "exempli gratia", just to make things clear . |
There are 2 major people on this thread - "Buy and hold crew" and the "10 by 10 crew" .Ok, there are minorities like the ones that don't have funds in the market and they only come here to cause ruckus. To the "10 to 10 crew", alias traders of NSEMPA, be familiar with these terms for your own good: Value at Risk (VaR) Volatility Sharpe ratio Calmer ratio What they have in common? Well, for a start, they are all risk measures. This is me signing off, over to the mudslingers, make una carry go. |
All this noisemakers, I hope your sharpe ratio is above 0.5 ![]() |
MemoriesAndMe:Pls read up on SpaceX and their satellite constellation. You need several satellites to establish communication. The technology is similar to the one used by GSM providers and as you know you need several masts to cover individual areas. Basically, what they did is to replace communications masts on the ground with satellites. I am not an expert either ![]() |
texazzpete:I see good business for retailers; I think retailers will buy and distribute through some kind of wifi connectivity with a paywall. Let's do some math: 1. SpaceX's satellite broadband service Starlink will begin delivering download speeds of about 300 Mbps meaning that 50 users will comfortably get about 6 Mbps which far better than our current service providers. 2. 50 people sharing 50k naira mean that the retailer can start charging as from 1k naira once she has 50 subscribers. 3. I may be wrong sha. |
