I recently stumbled upon a declassified document from the CIA titled - Analysis and Assessment of Gateway Process.

The research done in 1983 by the CIA in partnership with the Monroe Institute, showed that by listening to specific music at specific frequencies, a human can attain a synchronization between the left and right hemisphere of the brain to reach a state of heightened consciousness.
