Car Talk / Re: Nigerians Don't Know How To Use Headlights. by overboard(m): 2:04pm On Nov 12, 2023 |
Cooolme:. So true. You are supposed to be sensitive and empathetic to others when driving. Use full lights only when necessary for better vision or as a tool to warn others to sim theirs if the full lights are not necessary… I actually have a friend who, as a habit, would park and leave his lights on which potentially blinds an oncoming stationery vehicle. If for any reason you wish to have your parked vehicle visible for some reason, use parking lights and if you feel your parking is potentially hazardous, use your hazard lights 1 Like |

OK. To the guy angry at his uncle, calm down. Ideally, I feel a country should field no less than 80% career ambassadors as they possess the rudimentary training for such sensitive positions. And they are not politicians but civil servants so the idea that they should act like the regular senator etc is something I think is misplaced. Politicians have severely put a dent on the diplomatic service because as every government comes in, they use it as one of the key areas to satisfy political constituencies and what do they do, chug in untrained scallywags that lack the knowledge, experience and poise of a true diplomat. This has eroded this extremely noble profession. Just because some politicians hold the red passport don't mean they are the same with diplomats. Personally, I think lawmakers should not hold the diplomatic passport. I'm not sure if they do but I think I think I heard so. To the guy angry at his uncle, please note, I am not calling your uncle a bunkum o, but if he is a non-career diplomat that has enjoyed favour within the corridors of power and that made him a serial ambassador, I am OK with you pulling his heads off even though he really does not owe you anything. Next thing, they get there and behave like it is a ministry or governmental parastatal. The business of diplomacy vastly differs to the manner the regular inefficient government offices operate. Little wonder our embassies have become and quite sadly too, an extension of Nigeria's decadence. 1 Like |

Business / Re: Unilever Nigeria’s Market Exit To Affect OMO, Sunlight, Lux by overboard(m): 6:29am On Mar 28, 2023 |
Very interesting discourse on here. Unilever discontinuing those brands is more likely a decision to focus on more profitable products as Omo and Lux most especially have obviously lost market share due to stiff competition. The products are not close to top of mind as before. To dilute a brand either through quality reduction or lowering the price point would make no sense to some establishments but rather, discontinue and focus/consolidate efforts on the more viable options. No biggie here as this is a norm in such situations. If a relaunch or repackaging would salvage those brands, some metrics and research would have prompted Unilever to take that route. However, the concern is the trend is often an indicator of a bad economic policies and an unfavorable business environment… In economies where purchasing power dwindle as ours, brand loyalty can easily give way to what the pocket is saying. I personally ‘stopped’ low on a number of brands I use just to keep head above water. From real sausage to chicken franks; from Heineken to Trophy; from Nescafé Gold Blend to Classic and now to another lower rated brand… The emergence of competitors that seem to stifle legacy brands is not always a bad thing. Sometimes, it’s a mixture of growing demands being fulfilled by newer players and untapped opportunities actively taken up… Remember, Nigeria has a large (‘middle class’) population and this alone is an attraction for FMCGs. I saw some comment on backward integration. Yes, as much as many multinationals would rather give more monetary advantage to their home countries, if competitors are able to maximize profits sourcing locally, no one will tell them to do same. However, there’s a caveat to the immediate above: often times backward integration isn’t as easy as it sounds. I am privy to the fact that a number of critical raw materials available or source-able here don’t (yet) meet standards to which certain brand requirements dictate. Some attempts at creating local production of key raw materials have been futile. So FMCGs opt to continue importation of such to keep the quality aflame. My desire is that there is greater commitment to R& so that much of what is required by these entities is sourced here and the resultant effect is less use of FX to acquire materials at increasingly expensive costs and have more jobs through these efforts. 1 Like |
TV/Movies / Re: Dark October: Parents Of Slain ALUU-4 Urge Linda Ikeji, Netflix To Retract Movie by overboard(m): 9:33am On Jan 26, 2023 |
@buygala, Easy ooo. The quoted below is too harsh na. Biko. “How can Linda, being a mother herself, albeit an unfortunate and useless one, be so callous?” __ Truth is, she may or may not seek consent to produce the story. It depends if it is an adaptation where the characters may bear semblance in name and likeness and the storyline reminiscent of the happening… However, I think it is only fair to consult with the families especially as this is a deeply traumatic event. For instance, my wife wept for days when this thing happened, no joke. She had to stay off social media to recover. What it would take would be some nominal honorarium not to buy their conscience but an appeasement of sort to tell their children’s story and somewhat seek their blessing. She could also obtain a release to use their real names etc… Strictly speaking, it isn’t a must but she ought to have, if you get what I mean. It would have only eased everything. |

Apportion some to treasury bills... I think the rates are higher now but find out. Real estate in my opinion isn't a very motivating investment. Unless you may buy something cheap, reno and flip but a lot of factors have to fall in place for it to work. Other higher yield businesses though they come with risk. I think one or two legacy coins may be a good buy if the purchase is minimal. It is not very attractive at the moment but it is bound to pick up as crypto isn't going away; my opinion. Stocks. Like some US companies but research well. Even the highly rated Tesla stock dipped appreciably if I remember well. NB: I'm not a financial expert. |

Business / Re: Funke Opeke’s Mainone To Be Acquired For $320mn By US Giant Equinix by overboard(m): 6:10pm On Dec 07, 2021 |
Distilling from comments here - informed or not - I would opine that a company such as MainOne should in the future, be designated something in the ilk of Companies Strategic to Preserving National Security, CSPNS. For the mere fact that a horde of Nigerian banking institutions and other sensitive agencies rely on their channels for data traffic, encrypted or not, is to me, enough impetus for a governmental bailout where VC funding, an IPO (if feasible), or closely vetted merger (not full blown acquisition), is not agreeable. No, MainOne isn’t exactly a data mining venture like Facebook etc but is still a potential treasure trove for foreign parties interested in undermining national security. This may be through hacking or other disruptive means, nonetheless, the consequences could be grace. Just imagine China allowing Facebook to acquire TikTok. You tink say na beans make US clamp down on ByteDance (TikTok). They understand these fundamentals, and beyond. 2 Likes |

Music/Radio / Re: Is Setting Up Music Studio A Profitable Business by overboard(m): 8:52am On Jul 23, 2021 |
Music studio? Tread very carefully. Unless you have a sure means to secure stream of clientele. Location, network and investment level also matter. Same for rehearsal studios which is a better bet generally, at least in my opinion but I’ve come across a relatively new (about one year plus) rehearsal studio barely getting any work. Much of what we hear as published music is produced in bedrooms and private spaces. There is still the need for professional studios at least for mixing and mastering though. |
