This keyboard is nearly older than me, like an '81 or 82 series! How much?

Same experience, same office 2011 or 2012. In fact, a former University mate I've not seen in years was there and she was among the culprits, I don't even think she cared to recognize me.

I promptly contacted a top Visafone person through my a friend and I believe they called all of them to order. The Visafone top gun pleaded with me to name the ex-school mate, I initially decline but under much pressure and her assurance the staff would not be laid off, I obliged. She was still there as at '13 but I've dumped them when for no fault of mine, I couldn't use nearly 5GB data til its validity expired as they had a mast failure in my hood, all they offered was, 'Sorry for the inconvenience"

OK… I had planned to call this article “What the heck is a Talent Manager?” but I was warned not to tell the story that led to that title, so now I have to let that go… Pissed!

Regardless of the title, today I want to ask a very fundamental question… Why are you here?

Why were you employed where you work? Why did you go to work today? Why do you manage artistes? Why are you a musician? Why… Ok, that’s enough. Let me put it this way…

Have you ever been in an exam hall and you had no idea what the answers to any of the questions were? Well, My friend, why are you in that hall?

This article isn’t about exams though. I want to share my views on the job of a talent manager. I was opportuned to learn from some of the best… some in close proximity and others from afar. People like Taiye Aliyu (Dipp, Maytronomy etc), Osagie (Kel, Wizkid, Banky W, Skales etc), Efe Omoreigbe (Tuface – Efe’s list is massive so will stop here), Sunday Are (Former Mo’hits, Omawunmi etc), Enyi Omeruah (Bez) and many others. Each individual has a different method of approach but they are effective and good at what they do. They also understand one important thing: Applying and adapting whatever it is they know or do to the demands and state of the environment they operate… Nigeria!

I am not going to tell you things you can find online if you just take your time to search on google. However, I will highlight a few things, the concept of artiste management cannot be explained in one article… invest in books and some training.

As I mentioned in The Inefficient Professionals 1 and 2, business is business. The music business is not exempted from the repercussions of unplanned, uncalculated and unstructured activities. Therefore, as it is with every business, each player needs to know his role and what is required to play that role.

What is the Artiste Manager’s role in the Nigerian music industry?

This sounds like a question that has a very simple, straightforward answer. Well, in an environment where structure is established, it may be. But in Nigeria…

- Where most artistes prefer to employ D.I.Y tactics...
- Where most companies prefer to speak to the artiste directly...
- Where artistes are less interested in label deals (Mostly because they either aren’t getting any or don’t think there is really any record label (In its real sense) in Nigeria… I wonder who gave them that idea shrugs...
- Where a manager’s job is way more than selecting a record label, or agent or publicist etc to work with...
- Where artistes have easier access to marketers on bbm etc...
- Where twitter, youtube, facebook, 4shared etc have become promotions and publicity tools that the artistes can use by themselves...
- Where the artiste pays more attention to family and friends on business matters than the manager

… I could go on for days!!!!

The role of artiste managers across the world has changed. The demands of the labels, and artistes and the final consumers have changed. The more effective and successful managers in today’s music business recognize this change and adapt to fit in.

The role of the talent manager is now more than pitching to labels or simply supervising other elements that contribute to the artistes’ success. It is now more about creating visibility and value (building equity and mind share) and developing revenue streams (Building wealth). Building equity, mindshare and wealth…

Basically, Artistes Managers are now more involved in Business Development.

Unfortunately, most managers in the industry are not prepared for this. It really boils down to understanding business concepts and understanding the essence of engaging in activities that guarantee efficiency and results. Understanding this and a change in paradigm will help us all. Go and read the first two articles.

The other issue is that most talent managers in the industry are not creating results and this makes it hard for the artiste to trust the decisions or suggestions or activities of the manager.

Also, too many people get involved in the music industry for the wrong reasons. When purpose is unknown or misunderstood, abuse is inevitable. I have had a former staff/intern ask me what the benefit of working with me was if she couldn’t get tickets to a show. I simply gave her part of her salary to go see the show or finish her research work I had asked her to do. The artistes do what they do freely because they know they are taken care of by competent hands, people who are there solely because he/she (the artiste) is there. Not people who came to watch the show. In 2009, Mohammed Kawosha, Sam Stixx, 2 chocolate City artistes and myself went for a show in Minna and due to the reception we got, we felt the need to create a new plan… one that included an exit plan. Yes, we planned the artistes’ exit from the show venue. With all hands on deck, imagine getting carried away watching the show… I will leave it there.

Also, a lot of personal assistants are delusional… I will only say this once. If your job is to run errands you are NOT a talent manager!

Moving on swiftly… So the question now is what do we do?

Get Educated… It goes beyond the classroom. Google is your friend. Take a course… Read books… Understand Business!!!

Then… Understand how the music business works. What are the different roles of the talent manager? How do royalties work? How useful are Recording Labels? And so on.

Then… Most important, understand how the Nigerian music business works. Everyone complains that the industry can’t work… Most of these people wouldn’t even know what to do if it worked properly!
A clear understanding of what should be; combined with a firm grasp on the reality of the situation on ground; mixed with the ability to adopt general concepts and apply them will create the solutions you need. The solutions we all need!

Build relationships… Learn the importance of being a “people person”. Your ability to create solutions will make you the “go-to” guy… It is your ability to maintain relationships that will keep you relevant here.

Then, the part that too many talent managers forget to worry about… ensure that the artiste is making the music that can sell on a consistent basis. All the work you are doing is useless if the audience hate the music. Do not deceive or lie to your artiste. Artistes, seek professional advice if at any point in time you feel your friends are lying to you. 9 out of 10 times, when you feel this way, you are probably right.

I will end this article with one more point… There are about 6 management roles and most artistes only get to work with about 3 in their career.

The music or artiste or talent or personal manager (the most popular) he should have a clear understanding of the industry, publishing, music licenses, publicists etc and how they all add to the development of the artiste. The more contacts the talent manager has in the industry, the better. He is the one I wrote this article for by the way.

The Business Manager primarily manages money (income and expenses) and advices the artistes on investments and saving options as well as tax obligations. Most times, Business managers are either in the form of companies or an accountant.

The Road Manager takes care of the artiste on the road. The road manager ensures everything in the contract agreed upon are provided from the hotel room to balance payment. This ensures that the artistes can focus on the show and their performance.

The Tour Manager works with road managers to coordinate activities and logistics for large tours. Sometimes the road manager is the tour manager.

The others are the production manager and the technical manager.
In Nigeria, most times 1 person does the work of three people. And the artiste gets upset when the manager cannot explain why the hotel room is rubbish.

One thing is certain, when management does its work properly, the artiste will ultimately become lazy (with a few exceptions). By lazy, I do not mean with making music because that is all he/she would have to do!

If you can’t answer the question, “Why are you here?” Then you should not be there.

So these post has been on NL since 2013 and many of these errand runners and damagers couldn't take a cue from it?

EQing---->Compression---->Limiting. That's the basic truth. You can add Imaging for some stereo separation as well but really, mastering isn't a hard deal per se if your mixes stand well. Mastering doesn't really have to be that hard if you get the mix right. I mean there are mastering bundles i.e. iZotope, Fab Filter, T-Racks... that can give you a pro-like shine at times at the touch of a button.

Methinks you should really focus on mixing unless you are like really good in that department. A lot of people make the mistake of bundling mixing & mastering. Usually, its a phenomenon for non-pro practitioners to master their own mixes but as even project studios are becoming standard go-tos, it is gradually being accepted the world over.

I bet it won't be fallacious to say that the name 'Timaya' rings bell to the ears of almost all consciously aware music-loving Nigerians of this contemporary age.In recent times he chose to be referred to as the King of commercials,Egberi papa,Bum Bum boy et cetera.He had been enjoying a contented low life stardom,just a local dance hall artiste.He was enjoying the vibe,jiving in it,settled for the less perhaps because hardship used to give him an upper cut.He saw his surfacing to limelight as a modus to dishing out his testimony little wonder his doing some tracks like 'I don blow,Timaya,God don bless me' and inter alia captioning some of his albums in lieu with same testimony(Gift and Grace etc).He was enjoying the little fame,spicing it up with arrogance and some little pride.It used to pay him,draw crowd to him,make marketers treat his works with utmost respect and the media too.
His songs then though meaningful were filled with some crappy slogans and jargons not forgetting his recycling old beats by same him.He bragged about it,stuck to his style and at a time,other artistes started copying him.He was killing collaborations with his peculiar tongue twisting jargons.Infact the cruise made him rest on his past laurels.The idea of change or simply put 'upgrade' was not there.Then came his moments of tests,it started with the media,his Empress Njamah saga and not forgetting his career sharpening agent 'Nico Gravity'.Things somewhat suddenly turned sour for Mr. Timaya.Haters capitalised on his flaws,they bashed him with criticisms and accusations.It was such that nearly put his career to shatters.
But then,he knew the need for change has come.He returned to the drawing board and resurfaced with something new,first was the rebirth album.I listened to every track on it and not only wished but as well prayed it sell,however it had little market recognition.The fall in peck pushed him into something better,he did a joint album;the LLNP.After that fully came his big time upgrade,'the upgrade'.The bass laden bum bum track was something roofs of club halls still attest to till now.He rediscovered himself from the tide his career faced and not only remained relevant in the industry but aptly put overly relevant.
Bottom line:To learn from our critics.As can be deduced from the case of Timaya,he learnt to embrace change initiated by his critics to maintain his relevance in the industry even though his critics were not changed by their message of change.Where is his big time critic today?Where is the so-called Nico Gravity that dissed him with his 'finish Timaya'?Where is the Empress Njamah,how many films has she shot recently?
Life is about experience,best way is to learn from others.Timaya was in no way finished but was GARNISHED!
Deductions however should not be eschewed from our political scenery concerning the change and so called agents of change.Some of the so-called agents of change had threatened mayhem and parallel government if they had lost.The arrow head of the change yearners once threatened about dogs and baboons getting soaked in blood should he lose .It is crystal clear that the only change we have seen is from the criticised;he has not brazenly declared to make the country ungovernable for anyone but is ensuring a smooth transition.While we wait for more changes,we state that no change has been envisaged from the camp of the change messengers;the critics.It will be a non retraceable macabre dance and total show of shame should these change yearners fail to effect the needed change.

And i have once been to thier office at oshodi to make enquiry. When i was been given thier procedure leaflets bros i fear, By the time u want to really complete all this things been required by them, Bros u will end up by spending more than half a milion or close to million. Though thier own registration fee is exactly the amount u posted here but the procedure no easy.

Well, it is heavy with its 64 bit processing (introduced by Cakewalk by the way). Even an 8GB RAM 'll do with a 2.5GHz processor unless you pack plugs like wow. My workstation isn't half that for now and you need to see the mad theatricals to mix sometimes. Will soon upgrade though.
I use the RME Fireface 400. Want to get the 800 if God bless e soon. To find it is near impossible for now. Order online. No be M Audio, Sapphire and all dem pop cards e be o. Those ones full ground here. Even Avid HD is easier to get than any of the 3 I mentioned.

Still dey manage some keyboarding but sometimes track with guitarist. I need discipline to pick up the box men.

Discussed with a potential investor by mail, wrote a prelim business plan in a few days and we chatted very often until I sent in the plan. Then, silence. Even my appeal to just let me know whether it was a NO for my plan without any hard feelings was not responded to.

The good thing? The BP was a decoy in a vaguely related field just to get to know of the potential investors seriousness, meet face-to-face for tete-a-tete, agree in principle before I 'spill the beans', the original more marketable but easily differently expressible concept. Thank God.

u are into music production, i dnt tink a fellow producer wuld charge its own- dz is a vry minor case dat i personally wuldnt kollect a dime cuz evryone dat had bin helping n putting me tru dz line of trade w/o collecting a dime. d real work start when i m contactd 4 mixing/mastering or share a co-production credit. u first download its latest driver frm m-audio site specifically for m-audio axiom 61 with d exact supportd win os/win xp,vista,7,8./64 or 32 bit depending on what pc u use. run & install its drivers on ur pc first b4 connecting ur midi keyboard to ur daw. next step> state ur daw so i can direct u here n now.> for ur info i use jst one damn old clean evolution midi keyboard which i love n i m using it with 3 daws all at once n perfectly. 2 configure any midi keyboard to work with any daw is way too easy. tnx

Yeah FL is great, Reason too... I just find myself in different moods at times and just jump on any! FL is pretty easy to manipulate as you said but Reason makes up for complexity with stock sounds being awesome all round. They both have good tweak-ability though.

Never though of using Reason effects for stuff done outside of it (not that I need to) though I'd witnessed it before. I'm guessing you use Recyle to beatmap or so before importing into Reason? Aha, parallel compression, badt guy! One day, they'll probably open up their gems as VST based apps.

Pro Tools is an awesome DAW but after a while (and I've been through Sonar X2 [X1 was stupid at best] from Cakewalk 8 days, Cubase from 5 VST days to the recent Cubase 5/Nuendo), and even Logic (v5.5) 'til they stopped on Windows, I discovered Presonus StudioOne is the most intuitive and no-bullshit DAW ever. I wouldn't say this if I wasn't pretty sure. The sound sef is true-to-tape asides. From scratch to final, MIDI sequencing, tracking and audio handling, sound engine, stock plugins, automation, compatibility with third party apps... it's like a dream, utopia. Please try it! I only miss the Cubase 5 (new) vocal pitch feature (that is waaay more flexible than Autotune) even with StudioOne's Melodyne integration, which is quite unstable. Hope this is fixed in v3.

If you have a high end D/A converter like Apogee (Mac only), RME or Lynx and your processing is good, it will naturally reach where PT HD with it's HD Hardware will take you in record time without the serenre.

I've mixed 3 albums on PT with HD hardware and I can tell you, the protocols are really unnecessary. Imagine my shock at the price of their OMF Translator then among other just-to-be-elitist factors. Cracking groups messed them up when they released a PT 8HD version that could work on any soundcard! They had no choice than to institute that as a feature of sort from then on without their famous software with hardware craze. Practicability is another of S1's strengths and I say this with 2 year day-in-day-out experience.

FL deserves the award for functionality though. Maybe not really for tracking but in the creative process, its something else. I still love my FL no matter what anyone says!

@ChynoBEATS you open it na. I ditched them for StudioOne so I'm not interested though I know a bit of it, HD level sef.

I believe its filling was removed. Study it well, there seem to be traces of whatever was put inside. Secondly, it would flatten if it didn't have any filling in the oven; it's not bread dough that has a good amount of yeast to puff it up.

Onto scams, CR Maryland did scam me Monday night. Had their rice and beans with a piece of chicken. The chicken was spoilt. I asked for another one and same thing. They didn't even say sorry until I demanded it and did not bother that I could even be on a review of their outlet and I was though on a personal capacity. The sorry didn't come with a refund or offer for any other product to compensate. Really bad. As much as I like FC, they ef'd up big time.
