In the current Nigerian make-up,the statement does not make sense. No offence. Maybe in precolonial Nigeria or immediately after independence such may have being attempted but not anymore. In a time when Igbos are currently trying to save their skins, balkanizing ourselves will be foolhardy.
Yea.... That's why I said its better to team up as one and give the hausa-fulani and yoruba a run for our resources instead of claiming minorities.

So though I'm ukwuani, I would never deny that I'm igbo

The Igbo speaking people knew each other, but they didn't fly under one Igbo banner.

1. No one was Igbo per say, but they subconsciously knew they were related people.

Obi Ezzeh Ossai in that 1841 British expedition I was posting, did acknowledge the existence of "Ibu" speaking people across the Niger, over whom he had no control.

Simon Jonas, the "Ibo" man that served as the interpreter between the British voyage of 1841 and Ezzeh Obi Ossai was an Igbo man from Eastern Igboland,he had never been to Aboh before, yet he needed no interpreter to understand all Obi Ezzeh Ossai of Aboh Kingdom spoke, and relayed them in English to the white man.

Also Obi Ezzeh Ossai had no problem understanding Simon Jonas Igbo dialect....
1. Based on point one, since there was nothing like igbo back then, do you think ukwuani, ikwerre, ika etc folks are right to reject being called "igbo "?

E.g.... "I am Ukwuani... I am not igbo because there was nothing like "igbo " before the white man came "...

Ngwa man is simply Ngwa... Osha man is simply Osha... Ndienigu are simply Ndienugu... Ukwuani is simply Ukwuani... Ikwerre is simply ikwerre.... There's nothing like "Igbo "

Do you see ' reason ' in the above statement?

Interesting lecture dear Ishilove....

This is what I want to hear... Not crazy rantings from that asha baby... Back to topic...

I'm Akashiede... And I'm proud of it.

But aboriginal ukwani is something that is very hard to picture in my mind.... Like Ugomba noted ... "From where did the aboriginals migrate? "

If I look and examine my people physically... Some old people ... They're usually short and dark in complexion... They're short, at most 4-5ft (not dwarf though).. And dark/deep brown in complexion....

The other people on the other hand are tall (6-7ft) and fair in complexion...

I supposed the tall and fair folks are those who migrated from the Asaba side cos they same physical features ....

But the old, short and dark ppl, I don't know where they come from.... No idea.... And their gene is ' almost gone" among from the younger generation.

My great grandpa... They say he's a tall and fair man... Married a short dark woman... My grand uncles arr mostly tall and fair but curiously, my grandpa took his mom's features ... He was short, slim and dark in complexion... His children (My dad, uncles and aunties except one aunt) are all tall and fair... Only one of his children took the short/dark gene.Now... Nobody among me and cousins are short/dark

The thing I admire most about the dark-short-slim ukwuani people is... They are very strong and often outlive their tall-fair counterparts by many decades.... While the fair guys start dying when they reach 70-80... The short dark ones live up to 110-130 years old... Amazing ...!!..

but the downside is that... They're not intelligent. ... They're just content with living everyday as it comes... Just eat, sleep, marry, farm, born children, have fun... Thats all...They don't have ambition. The mentality s still veey much among ukwuani people .... And I hate it.

I really have no idea of where the short/dark folks come from as I haven't seen them anywhere else outside ukwuani land.

So ... On the aboriginal ukwuani people, you have a point as I have seem them... I dont even know those people are a treasure ... If i go to the village soon, I will snap a picture of an old aunt with the aboriginal features and keep the pixs for future reference.

@ Ugomba : these ukwuani aboriginal folks... They're dull o. Asking them where they come from is like pouring water into basket ... Theyre not literate... If u press them with hard questions, they will stand up and run away.

Back to the igbo debate...

True... There's really nothing like "igbo " before the white man came. Someone told me Enugu people were called "Ndienugu "... Hill people ... Just like you mentioned Ndiosumili... Riverine people ... Owerre man is simply owerre... Oka (Awka) man is simply awka... All the clans were like different countries to each other.... The was nothing like "igbo "...

It was for political and administrative classification ... That was how the British woke up and called everyone in the east of the Niger "Igbo "... They tried the same trick with Ukwauani by tagging them "kwale "...

So while the people in the east of the Niger accepted the "igbo " tag, .... Ukwuani rejected the kwale tag.

So... In reality ... If we all mentally go back to the 15th-16th century ... There was really nothing like "igbo ".

So I fully understand why ukwuani/ikwerre folks get offended When they are called "igbo "... Before the white man came, there was nothing like "igbo " so why are you calling me igbo?? ?? ??

But for me, the reason why I wouldn't get offended if I'm called "igbo " is the same reason why I wouldn't get offended if someone calls me "kwale "... To me, (and most Nigerians) igbo is a term used to describe the tribes from around /east lower niger.....

The real tribes... Are in their respective villages and clans.... I have been to Nnewi and Onitsha festivals and I can say... Nnewi and osha ppl are very distinct ....

So... I can say... Ukwuani is a tribe of its own if I use pre-16th century perspective ....

But the reality in today's world and Nigeria in particular is that... Portraying yourself as minority is like using your hand to scatter your own food. There is strength in numbers. Hausa/fulani/kanuri have teamed up as one... Egba, ijebu, Oyo, ekiti and co teamed up to form yoruba.... These people are the ones that benefitting most from Nigeria.

So for I think it will actually do us a lot more good if we in the east can team up and give hausa/yoruba a run for our resources so brazenly being exploited.

That is why I wouldn't take offense if anyone calls me igbo... smiley

Lack of traveling is the reason for the ignorance.

A lot of ukwani people don't know igbo and ukwani are same because they only travel west... They don't know what enugu, imo, awka are like.

I was surprised to learn there are communities in enugu that share same name with ukwani communities ... There's Abor, Abbi, Onicha and oda names i cant remember are same in both ukwani and enugu.

The local dialet is the same.

But because they don't travel east, they don't know.

Ukwani ppl who deny igbo more vehemently are those whose surname have hints of benin in it... Such as Osakwe, Osakuni, Egba, Ojo.... According to them, since they dont bear igbo surname, then they aren't igbo.

There's also the inferiority complex... Most ukwani ppl feel inferior in the midst of other igbo speaking people .... Mostly cos of their low Education level.

Anyway .... It's not by force to bear igbo... If some ppl don't want to be identified with igbo, it's their choice

nice points sir. However, i have a few concerns which u seem well learned to help clear out.

1. Has federalism practically worked in any nation in Africa where ethnic/religious diversity is heavily present? Cos it may work in Europe or US but they dont have these peculiar problems

2. Will it not have a negative impact of patriotism? Cos our ethnic bigotry has eaten deep, it ll only be a matter of time before a region gets powerful enough to threaten and eventually form a colony
3. What ll be its impacton our unity? Cos no zone ll seat and allow any other zone to use its resources to find footing in a bid to be financially free
4. How accountable and responsible ll each zone be to d FG. Each zone ll practically be more powerful than d FG, and constant demand for accountability/responsibility may lead to outright rebellion. Especially when d president is not prefered by some zones. Imagine PMB telling d east to put their books together...or GEJ telling d north dsame
5. Will an already running region in terms of resources-like d ND- be willing to help other regions kick start their quest for development by allowing their proceeds to be used? Now that wont happen. D enmity on ground wont allow for such.

Please respond sir. Tnx
1. No sane Nigerian wants it to disintegrate.... America is like that.. though they have their differences, they are not unitarized like Nigeria ... If u gives states/regions resources /financial freedom ... Honestly, they will be satisfied.

What you didn't ask is... Why would states want to break away? You know the causes of the Nigerian civil war... Were the grievances of the eastern region addressed by Gowon led FG? Look at the woman who was killed for blasphemy in kano... Thousand of southerners from the east (not only igbos) were mudered like that... What did the FG do to resolved the grievances? Nothing

Aburi accord was there... Did gowon adhere to it? No

It's like marriage ... If you sit down with your husband / wife and work out ur differences... Ur marriage will last long

its the same with reverting to regionalism... If the FG plays diplomatic /mediatory role... Even courts will be there to settle disputes... Everybody will be satisfied.

2. There's nothing like patriotism in Nigeria today... It only when they want to share money or success, that is when they are patriotic... Every other thing is tribe...!!..

Who patriotism don help sef? Will patriotism fill my belle? When agencies of government oppress the people, how will you have patriotism?

If a German, American or Chinese wants to die for their country, I will understand because the government takes care of their people ... Now ask me if I can die for Nigeria ... Am I mad?

Look at IDPs... Flood /disaster camps in the country ... It is the states that are managing them... Awolowo ' s free Education did magic for the western region ... If fiscal federalism will make states take Better care of their citizens, I'm all for it.

3&4 are related to my answers in 1 and 2...

5.. the same way states borrow funds... Loans, bonds, bilateral loans, BOOT and other numerous financing options ... They will take care of their needs that way..

Why should Kano give free money to Zamfara to blow?

Okay...

Personally... I don't understand why Northerners are against restructuring the country even when they know the present system is also improverishing them.

After producing most of the country ' s rulers, they still don't have anything to show for it and are even worse than the south in terms of human capital development.

The fact that people divorce doesn't stop people from getting married .... So why should the fear of secession make them stand so strongly against fiscal federalism, regionalism or confederation?

All these talks about Nigeria disintergrating... Forget it... No sane Nigerian wants Nigeria to break because we all have interests in other parts of the country.

But I cannot say... Because we stand to lose properties or whatever, ... That doesnt mean We should continue to endure bad government, dilapidated infrastructure, epileptic power supply till heavens know when Nigeria will overcome all these challenges with the present system of government.

Properties /Business can be rebuilt within 10-15 years so the fear of lose properties or business does not scare me.

I just hate it when... Before I can do anything, I have to go lick federal bum bum before I can do what I want to do... It discourages investments.

If they will restructure the country, fine... But if they don't agree, I cannot continue to endure Nigeria the way it is.

Shey because you neighour is driving 504 on the express means If you have range rover sport, you should park ur range rover at home or if u drive it, you must not overtake your neighbor?

The people who made laws for this country are very very stvpid angry angry

Zamfara is a less developed state... Ebonyi is less developed too... Ebonyi is willing to adopt federalism so she can better exploit her abakaliki rice, export it and use accrued revenue to build her needed infrastructure ... Zamfara is against federalism...

Is it right that Zamfara is tying down Ebonyi? undecided

This situation is fvck up.

no my patriotic but ignorant brother, laziness bred laziness. it has nothing to do with system of govt. how is it systems fault that ppl refuse to hold their councillor to task.
Immunity clause in the constitution says you cannot sue, prosecute or charge a serving political office holder or his appointees to cour Until their tenure is over.

So if a governor like, he can eat 50billion... Nobody can touch him ... And after his tenure, he contest for House of rep or senate... And goes scott free with his loot.

It is the system ' s fault

who stopped you from planting Palm oyel and Co. building refinery and industrial parks
.you just complain,no effort to fix what you can. is it not the same thieves that will come to rule at state level
mention the power that states do not have. you no fit. it's sad that you are the ppl we have to campaign to soon
You are wrong sir...

There are some things called "Federal Exclusive " list....

Power, Rail, Police, Ports and othrr critical infrastructure are at the exclusive prerogative of the federal government....

States has no right to undertake FG exclusive projects. This is why states hardly repair federal roads... its same reasons why all ports are owned by FG...

Delta and Akwa Ibom tried to build their own sea ports and were frustrated.

Look at your power grid... You can't generate power without federal license and the power u generate will be shared people u don't know while your state is in darkness. Delta state has 3 power plants and yet power is erratic in Asaba... If you were the governor, will u build another power plant? That is why we have epileptic power in Nigeria.

So states can't just build anything they like. Whatever they want to build, they have to ship it to lagos and haul by trucks to their respective states....

All these useless laws limits and restrict investments. That is why it is better for Nigeria to revert to regionalism... Let people build whatever they want and keep it instead of chasing federal approval and then sharing their sweat with people they dont know

Please stop patronizing me with useless statements.

Have you seen person with cancer b4?

Even your President Buhari... Did he know his "ailments" will deteriorate a year after winning election?

Do you know if you will have headache or body pain next tomorrow?

I would never use Buhari ' s illness to abuse or mock him...

I'm tired of exchanging tirade with u. Our arguments aren't adding any value to me so I'll move on.

Apologies if I offended you.

Goodluck. smiley
