Politics / Jets And Preachers- A Rebuttal: The Stone That The Builders Rejected by owo(m): 1:00pm On Dec 12, 2012
RECENTLY, the Nigerian press was awash with a deluge of criticisms about Pentecostal ministers buying jets and living in affluence. Beautiful! This is the same Pentecostal movement that started as the church of the poor, the downtrodden, the strugglers, and the dregs of the earth. We were labelled as “poor church rats”, “mushroom churches”, “SU”, and with such horrible, derogatory names. I personally remember being warned in 1975 to stop going to the church of “those who weep when they pray”. I was asked what problem I had that drove me to that kind of church. According to them, the members were poor and never-do-well.

Today, the story has changed! We are being criticized for buying jets! But they forgot that before we started to buy jets, we were winning souls in thousands and millions, turning men and women from darkness to light. We were transforming lives, giving them beauty for ashes. We were empowering people, equipping them with the revelation knowledge of God’s word that lifts men out of the pit of poverty, to the pinnacle of grace and dominion! We were empowering the poor, not only giving them fish to eat but also teaching them how to fish. We were building schools that were giving quality education to the people, empowering them mentally to become prominent (these include those throwing stones at us now!). We were building universities. We were transforming our society and changing our nation, one soul at a time.

Imagine what Nigeria would have been without the labours and the influence of the church, particularly the Pentecostals and the Charismatics! It would have been a living hell, if with all our positive, godly efforts; we are still in the mess that our nation is today!

Our critics fail to observe that we have not stopped doing those things that brought us into relevance and prominence. Though we have climbed the ladder of grace to rise from the pit of poverty to the mountain top of affluence, we still genuinely reach the poor masses of the downtrodden daily, showing them the way to life, the way to abundance and dominion, the way to righteousness and holiness, justice and equity, the way to God and glory, not only in the world to come but also in this present life.

Our critics do not understand the way of God, that when someone sows, he or she must reap; that those who sow in tears shall reap with joy. If they were to control the harvest, they would have left us to continue to labour and languish all through our lives, from generation to generation, reaping nothing out of our field of labour.

They have seen a few jets. They ain’t seen nothing yet! More of us will yet buy and maintain our jets because, by the mercy of God, we have been given the wisdom to do so. And we are willing to teach the nation, if they will listen to us, rather than throw stones.

However, our critics should know that the jets mean nothing to us! They are just tools to do the work that God has given us in a more effective manner. Or how can an Enoch Adeboye who has churches in over 160 nations of the earth cope with his pastoral and apostolic responsibilities without some private jets! He does not need just one. He needs some!

How can an Ayo Oritsejafor, who has to minister around the globe, pastor a very large congregation in Warri, and still attend to critical national matters in Abuja cope if he has to keep waiting at the airports, in a system where nothing is predictable? Our critics should please note that more of us are following the trail of the likes of Adeboye, whose wealth and affluence has never stopped him from being a true shepherd of the poor and downtrodden, in true humility, simplicity and godly sincerity, a shining example of true Pentecostalism and Charismatic wisdom.

The nation should have turned to the church for wisdom. How do you provide electricity for your massive organisations and campsites and we have not been able to power the nation? How have you been able to maintain your jets for years, and we don’t even have a national carrier? How do you make your schools, colleges and universities such first-class institutions and ours are dilapidating, riddled with cultism and violence in spite of so much money we are pumping into them again and again? How have you been able to truly live and accommodate yourselves in spite of coming from the North, South, East, and West and with such cultural diversities, whereas the nation is filled with mindless violence and hatred, based on tribal sentiments and primordial jingoism?

How could you handle leadership and power in a way that makes your huge organisations so stable and peaceful whereas our own political leaders are at one another’s throats?

Rather than blind, and sometimes irreverent, criticisms that flow out of a mixture of ignorance and envy, the Pentecostals should have been asked, how did you move from a people that were despised and rejected to becoming the jet owners, institution pioneers and nation-builders that you are today?

We would have answered them in this manner: We are the stones that the builders rejected, which have become the heads of the house. This is the doing of the Lord and it is marvellous in our own eyes. Our only explanation is, God’s grace has lifted the poor out of the dust and the beggars out of the dunghill.

I wish every Nigeria a violence-free, restful and beautiful Christmas and a glorious 2013. More Pentecostal jets are on the way, and we owe no apology about that. Come along with us, and you too will soon become a solution, a job provider, a pioneer, and no more a part of our national rot, corruption and inefficiency.

You are blessed and highly favoured.

Lagos is not broke. It is just highly indebted. The "high debt" is not a problem for the state government, because they will pay up some of them and borrow more.
Recall, the last time, all these debts were paid off by the feds. Now the question, why must Lagos always be bailed out by others? 90% of the roads were built by the feds yet they can't even be maintained by Lagos. The feds are fixing third mainland and Apapa expressways now because Lagos cannot do it. Yet, the Government is borrowing and piling up the debts so that the feds will cheat other states and pay it off another time. Wonders in the land of Ninja.

Will ethnic jingoists allow ship diversion to work?

Vessels transporting cars were once diverted to Calabar and Port Harcourt to keep the ports active, and suddenly the cry of "plot to strangulate one region's economy" rent the air. The sympathetic presidency of the time, reversed the order, and pronto, the nation was back to the old order of relying on a single dual carriage way for evacuation of most of the imports. I wonder why they did not use sand bags to block all other ports, so that those in the Lagos area can be happy.

Politics / How Many Nigerians Are There? by owo(m): 6:19pm On Jul 27, 2012
Just stumbled upon some opinions on Nigeria's census issues, and it bothers the mind how we are now reputed to be 160 - 170 million (about double our supossed population in 1993). How did they arrive at Nigeria's current population estimate?

Census: The Untold Story

By

Tom Mbeke-Ekanem

culled from GUARDIAN, March 20, 2006

Nigeria plans to conduct a head count to determine the actual population of the country on March 21 through March 25, 2006. To accomplish this, many activities including movement throughout the country will be restricted.

Without a doubt, population census has remained the most sensitive and most controversial in the politics and administration of Nigeria. Many will be surprised to learn that it was the indirect cause of the Biafran civil war and the 1975 coup d'etat. For the 2006 census, Nigeria plans to spend $121.4 million, half of which is contributed by the European Union. Already, controversies are raging on the plan to eliminate data on religion and tribe.

The first census conducted in any part of Nigeria was in 1866, when British colonialists counted Nigerians only in the then Lagos colony. Another census took place in 1911 in both northern and southern protectorates. The first nationwide census was conducted in 1921, seven years after the amalgamation of the northern and southern protectorates by the colonialists in 1914. Following this, censuses were conducted in 1931, 1952, 1953, 1962, 1963 and 1973.

The last census conducted in Nigeria took place in November 1991. Contrary to the projected figure of 100 million people, the nation's population was put at 88.5 million. As soon as the figure was released, a lot of eyebrows were raised. Like all the previous census results, it was terribly flawed. One such census was conducted in 1973. Those prominent Nigerians charged with this important project, like those before them, could not put aside tribalism, as a result, the resulting figures didn't even add up as those (military) in power manipulated the exercise to secure anticipated advantage in national revenue sharing and political representation.

An earlier projection of Nigerian population, based on the 1963 census, put the population at 120.5 million. This same estimate was projected by international organisations. The final 1963 census figure put Nigeria at 55.66 million. Was Nigeria really 55.66 million in 1963? This question became necessary when considering a projected 120.5 million and a recorded 88.5 million. How wrong was the figure in 1963 or how right was the figure in 1991? Otherwise why were these projections by several organisations so far off base? Overestimation of more than 40 per cent is no estimation. One could as well simply pull a number from the top of his head or from the lottery machine and use that to represent the country.

It is true that even in advanced countries, such as the United States, problems are encountered in the course of population count. Following the 1990 U.S. Census, several states and urban centres indicated that they were undercounted. The U.S. Census Bureau issued a statement acknowledging an error in the one per cent region. Considering that sound economic planning in any society is based on a sensible census figures, how reliable are our figures? What are the drawbacks of such undoing?

Perhaps to fully understand the census figures of 1991, it might be necessary to revisit the previous census figures of 1963. The first post-independent Nigerian head count occurred in 1962 that put Nigeria population at 45.26 million. At the end of the exercise, northern Nigeria was 22.01 million while the south was 23.25 million. Southern hopes for reapportionment of legislative seats were buoyed by the results. When this result was presented to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, the Prime Minister, who was a northerner, he rejected the result outright.

Abubakar saw no reason why southern Nigeria should have been more populated than the north. He promptly fired the British representative, J. J. Warren, who was in charge of the census and usurped the position. He then called for a 1963 census. Following the recount, he announced that northerners were undercounted by a whopping 8.5 million! The nation's population was reported to be 60.5 million, a figure which the census officials believed to be impossibly high. The figure was scaled down to 55.66 million. With this new addition, the northern figure ballooned to 31 million and this result was deemed acceptable by the Prime Minister, Abubakar.

The South did not waste time disputing the new figures. Following a little doctoring, the North was finally put at 29.8 million, a little less than the 31 million attained previously in the recount while the South was reduced to 25.9 million. In the recount, the East, Midwest, and Lagos remained virtually where they were in the 1962 census at 12.4, 2.5, and 0.7 million, respectively. The West increased from 7.8 million in 1962 to 10.3 million in 1963.

The figures were rejected by both Premiers of the East and Midwest, M. I. Okpara and Dennis Osadebey, respectively. Okpara sued for the nullification of the census figures, but his suit was dismissed. Akintola, whose party was in alliance with Abubakar's party, accepted the figures. Not surprisingly, therefore, the West, like its political partner, the North, had a sizeable increase. It was this same 1963 census figure that led to the election controversy in the West in 1965. The aftermath of those doctored figures led to the crisis in the West and eventually the first military coup d'etat in 1966 by Nzeogwu.

Because of this selfish-and-win-at-all-cost attitude, figures that can never be replicated by any two persons are being thrown about everywhere. This is partly as a result of the undisciplined and corrupt political and economic environment, which in large part has given rise to an unprecedented wave of white collar crimes, such as oil bunkering, drug trafficking, and the advance fee fraud popularly known as "419" which is now the order of the day. In spite of its known flaw, the 1963 national Census figures have been continuously used by local and international "experts" in making economic, political and social welfare projections for the country! It is therefore not shocking to have power and telephone lines that are forever overloaded, because no one knows how many people they are serving.

In the political arena, politicians of today, much like in the days of Abubakar, have made politics a life-and-death affair. To them the end justifies the means irrespective of how subversive the means might have been. During the 1991 census, just like in any election, there were reports of the enumerators much like "electoral officers vanishing into the toilets and bushes with the results and later emerging with doctored figures."

The passion for doctored figures is stronger now than before because the higher a state is in population, the more revenue allocation it receives from the Federal Government. This means that those at the helm of affairs must make sure that their states and ethnic groups are always higher in number to be able to receive the lion's share of the national cake. Apart from the oil revenue, with this posture they can justify their dominance in the military, political positions, contract awards, and the rest. The end result is that the country does not have a population figure that is worth the paper it is written on.

As in the previous results, as soon as the 1991 census results were released, the affected states, mostly the southern minority states denounced and rejected the figures. Again, like in 1973, these protests were silenced prematurely. The provisional 1973 figure released by General Gowon showed Nigeria to be 83 million with the overwhelming number in the North. Southerners protested, and the figure was again revised and reduced to 79.8 million. The final figure showed the Southerners to be just a fraction less than the Northerners.

The situation became very explosive. Northerners protested and accused Gowon of treachery. The confrontation engendered almost led to a physical altercation between Chief Obafemi Awolowo and General Murtala Muhammed, who became the champion of the Northern hegemony. The stalemate that resulted from that census figure became one major reason Gowon decided to postpone his handing over date from 1976. The 1973 census figure also became one major reason Murtala Muhammed had to overthrow Gowon's government in 1975, and promptly cancelling the figures.

It is true that Nigerians have ways to deal with figures and numbers. As long as it doesn't adversely affect those involved, anything is possible. The 1979 presidential election, for instance, gave an added meaning to two-thirds of 19 states, which became equal to 13 states. With that arithmetic, Shagari was declared a winner of the presidential election. Whether this was inter-ethnic or intra-ethnic arithmetic, it was hard to say. However, to avoid a repeat of that arithmetical fiasco and to exert the numerical strength of the North, the military created new states and increased the number to thirty six, with 19 in the North and 17 in the South.

Now comes the 2006 census. What should Nigerians expect or why should we expect anything different? As long as tribes in Nigeria continue to be distrustful to one another with competing goals, cultures, religion, and interests, etc., Nigeria shall never produce any census result worth the paper it is written on.

Why El-Rufai Will Never Be President

By

Jide Ayobolu

jideayobolu@yahoo.co.uk

November 1, 2006

It is no longer news that Mallam Nasir El-Rufai is very desperate to be the president of the federal republic of Nigeria come 2007, that is why he has said repeatedly that the person that must succeed president Olusegun Obasanjo must be someone that will continue with the reform programmes of the present administration, it is in this context that the reform team talked about paradigm shift, even when the so-called reforms are not having any positive, desirable and appreciable impact on the people. But what kind of president will El-Rufai be? First the point must be made than 150,000 school children have been deprived the golden opportunity of benefiting from the basic education in the Federal capital territory (FCT), as a result of the ongoing demolition exercise in the satellite towns and villages by El-Rufai. A number of private schools were demolished without provisions for alternative for pupils of the affected schools to continue their studies, while the number of those in public schools has drastically reduced due to the facts that only a negligible number of non-indigenes are living in areas where indigenes were spared the demolition. Most public schools have within the past months experienced a steady decline in the population of students, some are battling to cope with an unprecedented influx of new students as parents who were victims of the demolition have been forced to relocate their families to neighbouring settlements within and outside the FCT including Mararaba, Masaka, Ado and Keffi, all in Nasarawa State. There is serious concern that as more settlements fall to El-Rufai’s bulldozers, the number of drop-outs in the FCT is bound to increase beyond imagination.

Apart from this, over 3.5million people have been displaced in as result of the demolition exercise of mallam El-Rufai, without providing any alternatives whatsoever, so many people died in the process, court orders were flagrantly disregarded, compensations were not paid, people were not given prior notice before demolition exercises commenced, a lot of people were subjected to the wickedness, heartlessness and lack of sound judgment in the display of arbitrary use of power. In fact, the point must be made that many journalists who are very poorly paid but struggle to build houses for themselves have their abodes demolition in a very atrocious manner. Some of the houses were pulled down the very week children were supposed to start their examinations; some lost everything they had worked for in the process. This is the same thing he did about commercial motor bike operators, drove them out of Abuja, deprived them of their means of livelihood, and he did not provide any alternative. Is this the kind of person that wants to preside over the affairs of a very complex and highly pluralistic like Nigeria? Like someone noted very aptly, if el-Rufai is made president, expect a military coup in three months, el-Rufai does not have the temperament and maturity to rule Nigeria. The words that come out of his mouth alone can cause war. Besides, it is very important to know that, whereas el-Rufai pretends to be working for the president, when in actual fact he is running rings round the president in a desperate bid to clinch the coveted post at all cost. That is why Simon Kolawole said, el-Rufai recently hinted about his moral advantage over Obasanjo in an interview with THE NATION newspaper. He said he did not buy any shares as DG of BPE during the privatization programme and that he advised top government officials not to buy. He was at a loss to why the president’s company acquired shares in Transcorp. This is not a point to be missed or dismissed. He was saying, in effect, that where Obasanjo failed, he has succeeded.

Perhaps el-Rufai has forgotten that the country still remember his relationship with Jimmy Lawal, the rogue that defrauded Alpha Merchant Bank before running away from the country, to avoid the long arms of the law. Lawal, the questionable character was recruited by el-Rufai through whom he established a consultancy service where 10 per cent of the total contributions of federal government civil servants running into billions of naira were paid into. After milking dry the public fund through this illegal, unpatriotic and corrupt act, Jimmy Lawal changed base to Bangladesh where he has rerouted the siphoned funds into an unknown account and destination. And the question is when the EFCC dragnet caught up with Jimmy Lawal and he implicated el-Rufai as the brain behind the theft, what did Nuhu Ribadu do to bring el-Rufai to book? Nigerians should not forget in a hurry the controversies surrounding Pentascope and the aborted selling of NITEL where el-Rufai played a key role. People have not forgotten his ten million naira largesse to a corps member girlfriend. Rufal has been seizing lands, acquiring them for himself, his wives and family members and selling them at very high prices to people that can buy. The reason why he pursued the demolition exercise with so much intensity is not because he really wants to restore the master plan of Abuja, but to grab and acquire the lands that are close to the town, thereby feed fat on the sweat and toil of the poor. El-Rufai is a common thief, an opportunist, thoroughly confused, always talking from both sides of his mouth; he has no credibility and integrity, a chronic womanizer, a pathological liar, an unrepentant sadist, emotionally unable with split personality and always playing to the gallery.

And, like Simon Kolawole rightly remarked, “I have strong reservations about his (Rufai) ability to lead a country like Nigeria, especially in a democratic setting. He will make an excellent military administrator because of his soft spot for arbitrariness. He was once said to threatening to revoke some Cs of O. Reminded that the Cs of O were obtained legally, he allegedly retorted, what does it take to cancel a C of O? Is it not for the minister to just say so?” This is the kind of person that wants to be the president of Nigeria. This is a man who has never contested any election in his life, he has not been democratically elected into any elective office, he has no democratic credentials, he has no known political platform, he has never led any political group, he is not knowledgeable in the act and art of politicking, he is politically naïve, but very sly and perfidious, this is a man who is always angry with himself.

When he was appointed minister of the FCT, the first hornets’ nest he stirred was his accusation that senators Ibrahim Mantu, the Deputy Senate President and Jonathan Zwingina demanded N54million, to facilitate his nomination as minister. Although many people think perhaps he was saying the truth but the matter died for lack of proof. This was a person that the House of Representatives said should not hold any office again in Nigeria, this because of the two females in his employment that he paid in dollars as well as Rufai’s pentascope deal, where he was overseeing the transfer of Nitel to the Dutch firm in questionable circumstances, thereby making the country to lose over N100billion in the pentascope transaction, before the House resolution was quashed by the court. El-Rufai’s most critical problem now is the image of one of his consultants, Jimi Lawal who ran Alpha Merchant Bank aground and fled the country to escape trail. How did he hire a man with such a rotten past? Can two work together except they agree? What is the nature of the consultancy? There is no doubt whatsoever that this is not the kind of president that the country wants. El-Rufai will not be the president of Nigeria.

Politics / Re: Where Are The Supporters Of Buhari? by owo(m): 8:17pm On May 13, 2011
Well, now is the time to talk a bit about this, ala - post Morten.

First, a few questions need to be answered by the Buhari Supporters;
- Did Buhari commit treason by Subverting the People's will when he unilaterally took over Government through a coup?
- What is the punishment for treason, per Nigerian law?
- Convicted of treason or not, does Buhari have a moral basis for attempting to rule Nigeria when he should deservedly be in jail?

Then some more questions?
- Assuming the treason question is waived, can his previous stewardship be used for/against his ambition?
- Can Buhari's accomplishments be stated in clear terms, during his terms as Minister of petroleum, Head of state and PTF Chairman respectively?
- Matched, head to head, what qualities make a certain Buhari more qualified than Chris Okotie of Pat Utomi?
- In essence what is his past life makes him desirable as a president (or even a Local Government Chairman?

Economically;
- Is Buhari a Marxist?
- If yes, is Marxism or even socialism what is required today for Nigeria's growth?
- Is there any statement, idea (or indeed anything) traceable to Buhari that suggests that he understands the basis of building a viable economic entity?
- Does the choice of an equally, economically illiterate, deputy suggest anything about Buhari?

Politically;
- Is there a cogent explanation for the seeming alliance between Abacha's family and Buhari?
- Does this man's political affiliation with the Sharia trumpeting bunch (over the last 11 years) tell anything about him?
- Can trust be bestowed on political direction and vision of a man who chooses Bakare as his running mate?

I'm baffled that anyone, I mean ANYONE, dared to support Buhari.

For the records, I do not sit on the fence. I have been completely opposed to this man, his idealogy, world vision, focus and friends as long as I can imagine.

Buhari!!!
What a character. Proving how unfit he is to govern is the easiest of tasks. Suffice it to say that among the current crop of competitors, no one is more unfit to rule Nigeria than Gen. Buhari rtd.

But there is a bigger worry. It's amazing how some Pentecostals and SW-ers have come to the dubious conclusion that the presence of Bakare on the ticket has suddenly changed the leopard's skin. They typically push fake statistics during their BB preachments in order to justify their un-informed choice of the worst set of people that can possibly rule any nation.

A VP is as powerless as the sitting president wants him to be. If Atiku, with all his powers and PDM followership behind him could be neutralised and rendered in-effective, then who is Bakare?
Consider this: Should BB win, what stops the former maximum ruler from giving him the boot (removing him from office) one day after the election?

Our safety lies in ensuring that we will NEVER AGAIN reward despots with access to our common patrimony.

NEVER VOTE FOR BUHARI

Travel / Re: Lagos Ranked 4th Worst Livable City In The World 2011: D'you Agree? by owo(m): 10:07am On Mar 01, 2011
Lagos…. Hmmm…Lagos!!! What a waste of land mass, waterways and resources.

To say the least, it is surprising that it is not the worst city in the World. It is a failure on all fronts;
- Security
- Transportation
- Education
- Industry
- Socials etc

What amazes is that most inhabitants are in denial of the dire need to have a real transformation in this city. It is why they support a political system dominated by Godfathers and the smooth talking representative (Governor) of this corrupt and inefficient cabal.

Have you wondered why no sitting Lagos Governor is ever seen as non-performing? The absolute lack of awareness in this place is terrible and candidly criminal.

Lagos needs roads, trains, water transportation, housing, planning, schools, sewage distribution and everything else that humans require to survive.

Today it is an apology to itself and the world. To see some of the inhabitants gloat in a certain “superiority complex’’ is appalling and indicates that a real reformation of the mind is urgently required.

bawomolo:

does that mean certain guidelines can be broken??

Guide-lines: Boundaries of operation

The tree felling quotes are both instructions for different situations aimed at accomplishing set goals therefore they are both valid. They are not eternal/timeless laws.

Ok , bawomolo, I'll try to help u sort out your concerns as often as I can.

bawomolo:

oh it's the 708. are u from around the area.

Were the Israelites to spare the trees in the countries they invaded?

Deuteronomy 20:19
When thou shalt besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees,

2 Kings 3:19
And ye shall smite every fenced city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree,

The Duet 20:19 statement is an instruction for possesing the promised land.

Having been entrenched in the land, the 2Kings3:19 statement is an example of a case by case instruction on what to do in a particular situation.

Note: Specific instructions are different from Timeless Guidelines.

Oooops!!! I was just going through the few topics that I've replied to in this forum and stumbled on this one.

It makes an interesting read, especially as it seems that the chickens have come home to roost on the subject matter.

Hopefully, men, women, children and all who read will learn that might is not right neither is greed equal to positive ambition. Also that the end of the wicked is destruction either here or in the hereafter.
