U jus nailed it bro.nice one bigsmoke2: Most people dont know how tough medical training is. Let me give u an insight÷
° Med school requries total commitment
° Its very hard to do any side hustling
°Nothing like carry over u fail,u get kicked out
°The longest official holiday u get is 2 weeks in 1 year Hence we spend double the time most other udergraduate spend inschool +strike
°U must meet 75%attendance or no exam
°We wite exams every 3 weeks on the average
°Sometimes professional exams can span a month with only weekend as break
°Go To a bookshop and ask the price of (robbins & cotran)medical books are pretty expensive
°U can stand up to 8 hours when u go for forensic autopsies, wardround or surgical procedures
°We use the negative marking system for exam ie minus 1 for every question u fail
°pass mark is 50 for every exam and not 40 |

Chairman lets not deceive ourself.how many of those gadgets u mention can be produce in Nigeria by a Nigerian engineer.I guess none.so we got a long way to go. Tbliss12: All over the world its no more "News" that these two field of career are both professional fields especially when it comes to practicing it in full scale. But its so saddened here in my country (Nigeria) the way Medical Student(Pharmacists,Nurses, Medical Lab Scientist and Doctors) are being given mouth watery treatment on NYSC service ground and the future Engineers are being treated like idiots.
Infact in Benue State where I'm serving Med Guys are paid like 60k @ppa, 30k @state level followed with 3bedroom flats of Doctors quarters(free of charge) nd 19k of allawee compared with an Engineering Student sent to primary or secondary school with 2k@ ppa and just your 19k of allawee with no accommodation even if you had a First Class(B.Eng) in school. With this sad experience I thing the Engineering Bodies in this country (NSE nd COREN) are allowing our government to cheat us big time.
Med Guys make sure life of human is sustained but Engineers make life so comfortable for humans, we are everywhere going great things all around the world...
1. Automobile industry 2. Air-Condition and Refrigeration(Plasma air-con,doing great) 3. Electronics Devices (Mobile Devices,Laptops etc) 4. ICT and Telecommunications 5. Education › Re: Teacher Spends N400,000 To Renovate Classroom For Pupils by ozo13(m): 7:37pm On Oct 05, 2014 |
National award all d way.God bless u and ya family woman.dis r d real ppl DAT deserve award not ppl like ikimi DAT receive national award jus 2mnths after decamping from APC to PDP Emmysteve: A teacher, Mrs. Ayoade Opeogun, who renovated her classroom at Methodist Nursery and Primary school, Abeokuta, Ogun State, speaks with MOTUNRAYO JOEL about what motivated her action
Please introduce yourself.
My name is Ayoade Opeogun and I have five children. I was trained as a nursery and primary school teacher at Olabisi Onabanjo University; I graduated in 2003. I teach Nursery Two pupils at Methodist Nursery and Primary School.
When did you join your current school?
I was transferred to the school in 2011. I was previously at St. Johnson Primary School, Kuto, Abeokuta in Ogun State.
How many pupils do you have in your class? I have about 36 pupils.
When you were transferred to the school, what were the things you noticed?
When I joined the school, I noticed that it was not conducive to learning. The buildings were dilapidated; the floor in the classrooms had potholes, even the classroom’s ceiling was off. It wasn’t a classroom to teach children. I complained to the school management that I couldn’t teach in such an environment and they said I should do whatever I felt had to do. That was when I decided to renovate the classroom.
What did you do?
I got a bricklayer to re-plaster the floor, then I fixed the ceiling and roof. I repainted the walls inside and outside and I decorated them with educational nursery images and symbols. I also equipped the classroom with teaching and learning aids such as television, DVD and picture chats. I also brought in a standing fan and window blind.
There was no electricity in the class; so I went to the Power Holding Company of Nigeria and pleaded with the workers there to install electricity in the class which they did. I did other minor things in the classroom. At the end of the day, I spent about N400, 000.
Did the school management make a complaint about the state of the school to the government?
They did complain, but I believe the state government is doing its best to renovate all public schools. But if a teacher is teaching in a classroom that isn’t conducive, the teacher should do what is necessary, even if it means spending his or her money. If we have to wait till the government is ready to renovate our classrooms, pupils will be the ones to suffer.
What motivated you to spend so much?
My love for my pupils motivated me. I couldn’t stand seeing them learning in such an environment. When I started renovating the class, I started little by little; I never thought I would go that far. I spent 11 months salaries to renovate the classroom. Each month, after collecting my salary, I would remove a certain amount to renovate the class. Later when I finished, I told the State Universal Basic Education Board that I wanted to dedicate the class in memory of my mother and they allowed me. My mother solely funded my education; I lost my father at a tender age. If not because of her, I won’t be where I am today. The children are enjoying the classroom now. They are so happy and eager to learn, I noticed that their grades improved greatly after the renovation. They are so enthusiastic to learn.
How did the school react?
At first when I started, I got discouraged by teachers, they kept giving me reasons why I shouldn’t renovate the class, but I stood my ground and followed my heart. I made up my mind to do it. When it became a reality, they now realised the importance of all what I did. The school authorities were happy about it. I wanted the classroom to be like the ones I see in private schools. Even the pupils’ parents expressed happiness. People didn’t expect me to do what I did, I was happy that I made a difference in the lives of the pupils.
How did the government react?
I don’t know. I’m not aware if SUBEB informed the government or not.
What else do you plan to do in your classroom?
I’m planning to buy a two and a half mattress, chairs and tables for the pupils. Now, we have wooden benches in the classroom. I hope to have bought all these things before resumption.
Didn’t the money you spent drain your purse?
No, maybe because all my children except one are grown up thus I don’t have many responsibilities.
Did you get help from any individual or corporate organisation?
No I didn’t. I didn’t even approach anyone. I did it all by myself with God by my side. If you didn’t spend that money on your class, what would you have used it for?
Maybe I could have bought a new car or bought myself something expensive, but nothing beats education. I’m happy to see my pupils happy. I kept wondering how I would leave a beautiful home to teach in a dilapidated classroom. It was saddening, and moreover, I was a level 12 officer then, it would be a shame on my part to teach in such a classroom.
Do you regret your action?
No. Rather, I’m happy and full of joy.
What is your advice to the government?
When a governor comes into power, they make so many promises, but don’t keep half of them. Governors should learn to keep their promises especially in the area of education. Also, whenever, they give out a contract that has to do with education, they should follow it up, until it becomes a reality.
What is your advice to teachers?
They should help the indigent, most of them are found in public schools. Teachers should try and make a difference in their lives. One may think they won’t appreciate it, but it’s not true.
What is your view about teachers’ welfare?
Teachers need to be celebrated. A large percentage of teachers in the country are poorly paid, and when there is no money, a teacher will not be motivated to teach. Governments across the country should boost teachers’ welfare. Whether we like it or not, teachers play a major role in the society; a lot of us won’t be where we are if not because of the teachers that taught us. How did your husband feel about the expenses you incurred while renovating the classroom? He was very supportive. He gave me the go-ahead.
Do you sometimes wish you were in a private school?
I do, however, I left the private sector for the public sector because they didn’t have pension at that time.
If you were not a teacher, what would you have been?
Teaching is my passion, but if I weren’t a teacher, I would have been a nurse. I like taking care of people.
We are proud of our mum —Opeogun’s children
Were you comfortable with her spending her salary on renovating a classroom?
Adeola: At the initial stage, I wasn’t comfortable with it. I felt unhappy, but after some time, I got over it. I realised that I couldn’t stop her. She is the type of person that wants her impact to be felt wherever she is.
Adebisi: I’m proud of what she did, if I had my way, I would do much more for those children. Most pupils in public schools don’t have the opportunity of learning in a good classroom. She brought the private school setting into her classroom.
Adefemi: I must say, not everyone can afford to send their children to private schools. All what my mother did was to give her pupils an opportunity to see what a private school classroom looks like. I’m proud of what she did; one rarely finds someone who can give out money to help others.
How do you feel about what your mother did?
Adeola: When she first informed me about her plans, I felt happy and I felt it was necessary. My mother is someone who likes to help people. She has a soft heart.

(1). Accounting this course is overrated,i wonder why someone would spend years studying this course when my sister had B.sc in Biochemistry, went for a 7months training and she is now working in a bank. DAT means there is a limit she can get to wt DAT only 7mnths training.
(2). Microbiology Don't need to say much about this, the course is quite tough though, but after spending 4 years studying it,most of them end up teaching. mark my words not all microbiologist but most.
(3). Political science I Don't need to say much about this course, because it's already speaking for itself.
(4).Business administration. Only God knows how the peeps that studied this course gets employed.
(5).Pharmacy yea,i know you might be surprised seeing this but it's true. Most pharmacist end up opening a shop to sell drugs, but the few that are employed are paid in 6 zeros.

The secretary to the government of the federation, Three arms zone, central area, abuja Sir, FIFTEEN (15) DAYS ULTIMATUM. You could recall that JOHESU embarked on three days warning strike from 20th to 22nd january 22014 to press home various demands which have been lingering since 2009 In view of the inability of the honourable minister of health, professor onyebuchi chukwu to meet our demands, the federal government intervened through the office of the secretary to the government of the federation. However, from january to september 2014, very little have been achieved as most agreements earlier reached between federal government and JOHESU are not implemented.medicalworldnigeria.com We therefore, demand for immediate resolution of all matters pending between JOHESU and federal government within the next fifteen days i.e not later than 8th october 2014 or face an indefinite strike action. The contending issues among others are as follows: 1) Non promotion of our members from salary CONHESS 14 - 15 as directors having stayed for 4 to 15 years on the same salary level without promotion in most fedral tertiary hospitals. 2) Immediate release of circular on adjustment of salary as done for NMA members since january 2014 and immediate payment of at least two months arrears while the remaining are paid with 2015 budget. 3) Immediate release of the circular on extension of retirement age to be back dated to february 2014 when the issue was presented to National council on establishment. 4) Immediate and full payment of arrears of salaries of CONHESS 10 skipping outstanding since the year 2010. 5) Immediate amendment of the ciruclar on consultancy status as pronounced by National court on 22nd july, 2013, and agreed to at a meeting of 12th august 2014 with the federal government.medicalworldnigeria.com 6) Payment of arrears of specialist allowance to qualified hospital based professioanls with effect from 1st january 2010 in line with national industrial court of nigeria ruling. 7) Immediate release of the harmonized scheme of service and circular on internship for nurses and midwives.
Modification of medical laboratory scientist intern's circular to include post NYSC placement and beyond. 9)Minimizing the lopsidedness in the membership of boards of management of tertiary hospitals. 10) Implementation of the court judgement in favour of medical laboratory scientist on separate department in the hospitals. 11) Need to define the functions and power of honourary consultants in teaching hospitals and the need to appoint more hospital based consultatnts instead of honourary consultants.medicalworldnigeria.com 12) Need for residency program for other health professionals. 13) Issuance of guidelines on appointment of chariman, medical advisory committee and the committee's composition. 14) Need for complete autonomy for the teaching hospitals by removing university lecturers as head in some clinical departments. 15) Need to urgently set up a collective bargaining agreement committee to look at the following allowances for JOHESU members a. Headship allowance b. Administrative allowance c. professional allowance. d. Excess work load allowance e. Health and safety site allowance f. responsibility allowance g. reduction of the present excess taxation on health workers salaries h. restoration of working days as annual leave medicalworldnigeria.com It is our hope that governement would quickly accede to these demands bearing in mind that JOHESU members have exercised sufficient patience and maturity (for more than one year) over thier demands. Johesu baba.association of ppl feeling inferiority complex.y must a pharmacist join radiographers, lab tech, nurse before una voice can be heard. adeoladrg: Smh
Before you write on any issue I'd advice that you make proper research into the subject matter. One thing you must realise is that the only constant thing in life is change and when. In today's medical world due to the ever growing health challenges and nEed for better care other professionals in the health sector don't just stop at getting first degrees, they are specializing in different areas in their chosen fields to better eqyip them do peform their fxn better. All this is geared towards better patients care. Unfortunately Nigerian Drs see it as a threat to them because they feel if others are granted consultancy rights they will come to their level. There is no point disputing the fact that Drs are leaders in the health care team. The mark of a true leader is to do your job and ensure that ur team mates also do theirs. They cannot do so if they are nor trained to. Nigerian Drs should come down from their egocentric world and emulate what other countries are doing then we would be the better for it. I'll ask why is it that they are always quick to go on strike with any liTtle misunderstanding? Why can't they try every other possible means b4 resrting to strike?
what JOHESU is demanding for Is not out of place but it is happening all over the world. As far as I'm concerned this matter is not worth the lives that have been lost and are still being lost everyday due to this strike. |

Isn't it the same Ilorin in the days of Prof. Rahman Oba who sacked all the top professors in some fields of medicine Ilorin had back then? Who groomed the current breed they parade as professors? Perhaps, when I'm educated in this regard I could have a change of position on this but until then, I hols my peace. if na dr Prof u wan sabi.med. dept: prof salami, Okoro, katibi, chijioke , omotosho etc Surgery dept: Prof lawal, Rahman, adeniran, odebode, nze ,ogar, etc not talking abt dos ones DAT r associate prof.
