A yoruba man was president for 8yrs what did he do for the yoruba people, What has the ordinary northerner got to show for all this period of northern "Domination"? except alimanjiri, niger deltans are opressed by their own poeple, Alamasigha, Ibori, Igbenedion etc etc etc are all from the Niger delta.

We seem to forget that in the world today no small counrty (i mean population wise) matters. China and India today apart from anything else are reckoned with as a result of their population. We need this nigeria to be one. All lther differences can be addressed. Spliting should not be an option. Show me a country that has achieved greatness by spliting?

Nigerians to pay more for electricity from next month
Martin Ayankola and Rasheed Komolafe - 21.02.2008

NIGERIANS should prepare to pay more for electricity as there are strong indications that the Federal Government would approve the increase in tariff by March.

Minister of State for Power, Mrs Fatima Balarabe Ibrahim, said in Abuja on Wednesday that the Federal Government would finalise by March all issues relating to the multi-year tariff order, which the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) had hinted it would soon introduce.

Nigerians currently pay a minimum of N4 per unit of electricity and a maximum of N6.
She explained that the review of the tariff would help to ensure investors recover cost and make profit.

Mrs. Ibrahim noted that inappropriate pricing of electricity was hampering investments in the sector.

The minister, who was delivering a paper on power generation as a catalyst for economic growth and diversification in Nigeria at the Nigeria Oil and Gas 2008, stressed that government had a plan to rehabilitate old plant units in the power stations to shore up Nigeria's power generation to 5,800 megawatts, while also intensifying efforts to further generate 6,000 megawatts from new projects.

She said government was working hard at expanding the transmission network to be able to achieve 10,000 megawatts of electricity.

Mrs. Ibrahim said government had received concrete proposals for investments in the power sector, which included the construction of a coal-fired power station, contract financing of some projects and others.

She stated that government was working hard at solving problem of gas supply to power stations soonest.

NOW THEY'VE ADDED SALT TO OUR INJURY. sad Let us Pray !!!

Politics / Presidential Election Annulled! by palmwine(m): 11:40pm On Feb 15, 2008
Fellow Nairalanders, it's no news that the last election for the most part was a farce, as demonstrated by upturning of election victories by election tribunals all over the country. What if the Presidential election of Yar'dua is annulled? What do you think will happen? who do you think can lead this country to true growth and development among the 3 contending candidates (Yar'dua, Atiku, Or Buhari).

Do you think we shuold allow others to join the race? ARISE O COMPATRIOT!,

HABA! Ok that's too much.For heaven's sake, who told you the Nigerian Police have misplaced their helicopters?What i know is that two helicopters (Mil-14s) were donated to them by the Ukrainians.Bros please don't post things you are not sure of.

The ships that dissapeared in the hands of the navy definitely soiled it's name and was felt throughout the military. That was why the top officers involved faced court-martial.

@Ocelot2006
Oh you don't seem to have heard about the Police Equipment Fund (PEF) and the 2 helicopters that were bought and commissioned by former IG, well the new IG says they were never taken to the force headquarters.
Don't contradict statements you are not sure of.

The average nigerian home already pays so much more for electricity than people who actually have 24/7 power supply do.

Can the statement above be substantiated or must people just come up with crazy statements that may just be outright lies?

@Afam

I once lived in a neighorhood with the Card Meter and a 2500 naira card takes the whole 4 flats about 6weeks to exhaust, but where I live now with the old meter we get bills of 10000 naira (average) with out any light. We should be talking of the new meter (With pay as you go card) or why was it not circulated to all? Abi you be NEPA?

Do we have an Army in Nigeria? Primary school question, answer:they are in the Niger Delta creeks selling arms to youths, were you not in this counrty when 2 naval shipps disappear from the Nigerian sea? you say where was the navy? Well, before you abuse me, I know the Nigerian Police is not Part of the army, but 2 of their own helicopter just disappeared too. Well the IG says he doesn,t know how it happened.

Politics / Nigerians To Pay More For Electricity by palmwine(m): 3:11pm On Feb 12, 2008
Former OPEC President,Dr. Rilwanu Lukman, has said that Nigerians may have to pay more for electricity if the current energy reform is to bear meaningful results. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that Lukeman made this known while speaking at a convocation lecture of the Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, on Saturday.

In the lecture titled: “Confronting Nigeria’s Energy Challenge: The imperative of immediate reforms’’, Lukman said that the crisis in the power sector in Nigeria accumulated over two decades. “It is not realistic therefore to expect this crisis to be solved overnight. “In addition, we need to acknowledge that the power supply problem is a moving target, there can not be a once and for all solution”, he said.

The honorary Strategic Adviser to the President on energy said that South Africa, which had surplus power capacity a few years ago, now experiences problem.

“Countries must therefore continuously strive to upgrade capacity, improve infrastructure and boost investments in the sector’’, Lukman stressed. The former OPEC chief noted that Nigeria’s power crisis could not be resolved by government alone, adding that the private sector must be encouraged to invest heavily on electricity supply in the country.

MY QUESTION IS ALL THE ISSUES RAISE ABOVE, IS IT THE FAULT OF THE ORDINARY MAN?

your post is quite instructive. My view is that the mafia of generator importers and sundry dealers seem to have capture Mr. President and his cabinet. How do you expect power when the duaghter of a former President goes abroad under a fake name to corner power contract. Funny thing is she ordinarily does not know how to light a candle. Shame sad

The electoral system in Nigeria does not allow you to ask questions. No public debate, they just force it down your throat with alot of rented crowd. Issues are never discussed in Nigeria.

Yar’Adua promised that he would declare a state of emergency to liberate the beleaguered power sector within six months of assuming office. “Our plan is to launch a national emergency programme on the power sector, because we believe that there cannot be any meaningful industrial development without steady power supply,” Yar’Adua vowedEight months into the present dispensation, however, the nation is still groaning in darkness. The poor and chaotic supply of electricity, which the President met on ground, has been allowed to deteriorate further. What is more appalling is that a ‘go-slow’ approach to power sector revival is fast supplanting the sense of urgency earlier expressed by Yar’Adua before taking office. Hope is fast crumbling, giving way to despair. The way forward for the sector is foggy. Nobody is sure of the next step to be taken by the President.

Those countries that understand the inevitable nexus between development and the supply of electricity are not joking or playing politics with the power sector. South Africa, with a population of about 40 million, is currently generating about 36,000 MW. With a population of about 79 million, Egypt generates about 23,000 MW. Iran, which has a population of 70 million, presently generates 42,000 MW. But our country, after many years of failed promises and trillions of naira down the drain, has a miserable generating capacity of about 6,000 MW on paper. In reality, the aged stations cannot generate more than 3,000 MW at the best of times. But only half of that figure is capable of being transmitted for the use of about 140 million Nigerians.
