Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho believes Diego Costa will have benefited from his midweek exertions ahead of Saturday's visit of Hull City. Costa played the full 90 minutes on Wednesday as Chelsea eased to a 3-1 victory over Sporting Lisbon in the UEFA Champions League. The Spain international has featured in four matches without scoring since claiming his 11th Barclays Premier League goal of the season against West Bromwich Albion on 22 November. But Mourinho declared himself pleased with the 26-year-old's contribution in the clash with Sporting, as Costa seeks to return to peak fitness and form after persistent hamstring trouble this term. "He wants to improve his condition," explained Mourinho. "The confidence is not high, the condition is not the best but he wants to use the game [against Sporting] to chase lots of runs and movements, always wanting the ball, always wanting to associate with the wingers and with [Cesc] Fabregas. "[It was] very important for him. I saw him better than against Newcastle, better than against Sunderland. This game was important for him." Chelsea will be determined to bounce back on Saturday after losing their unbeaten record to Newcastle United last weekend. A Papiss Cisse brace at St James' Park ensured Chelsea tasted defeat for the first time in 24 matches, but they remain top of the league - three points clear of reigning champions Manchester City - and will be expected to get back on track against a Hull side that is winless in eight. Steve Bruce's men dropped into the bottom three following a 0-0 draw with West Brom in their last outing and have three fewer points at this stage of the season than they had in 2009-10, when they were ultimately relegated from the BPL. Bruce could hand a recall to captain Curtis Davies, who has been left on the bench for his side's last two matches, and Nikica Jelavic will be in contention for a starting place after illness restricted him to a late appearance as a substitute against West Brom. Gaston Ramirez remains suspended for Hull, having been sent off against Tottenham Hotspur last month. Petr Cech will play in goal for Chelsea against Hull City on Saturday after Thibaut Courtois picked up a minor muscular injury in training. But Mourinho has John Terry, Eden Hazard, Branislav Ivanovic, Oscar and Willian in contention after being rested on Wednesday, with Chelsea already confirmed as winners of their Champions League group, while teenager Ruben Loftus-Cheek made his debut. The Portuguese can call upon Nemanja Matic against Hull after the Serbia midfielder missed the loss to Newcastle through suspension, but Cesc Fabregas serves a one-match ban of his own for picking up five bookings this term. Chelsea ran out 2-0 winners in each of their meetings with Hull last term and have never lost to the Yorkshire club in the Barclays Premier League. Captain John Terry, Eden Hazard and Willian will be rested for Chelsea's final Champions League clash with Sporting Lisbon, with the Blues already through as Group G winners. Chelsea lost for the first time in 24 games this season at Newcastle last Saturday, but can afford to rest key personnel for a match which they need not win and the trio did not train on Tuesday. Manager Jose Mourinho has opted to give defender Terry the clash off, along with Hazard and Willian, prior to a return to Premier League action against Hull on Saturday. The match means more for Sporting, who are in a battle with Roberto Di Matteo's Schalke to advance as group runners up. Ruben Loftus-Cheek, the 18-year-old midfielder, is included in the Chelsea squad, with Mourinho likely to balance rotating his options and giving youth a chance with keeping his side in tune for the busy festive programme. Cesc Fabregas may be included as he is suspended for the visit of Hull to Stamford Bridge this weekend for accumulating five yellow cards. Goalkeeper Petr Cech could get a third start in the competition this term after twice playing against Slovenia's Maribor, while Nemanja Matic is available after missing the Newcastle clash through suspension. Mourinho said: ''Terry, Willian and Hazard are on holidays. I would like to give the whole squad the time off but these three play all the time and I have good solutions for these positions. ''We have so many matches to play in December and we are one of the few teams in the Premier League that also plays the Capital One Cup in this moment. ''(Of) the other teams involved in the Champions League only Liverpool is also in the Capital One Cup. ''Everybody has periods to rest we don't have. This game gives me the chance to rest these three players. ''We had already the fifth yellow card to Diego (Costa), the fifth yellow card to Matic and now the fifth yellow card to Fabregas, which give them a rest. ''Step by step, match after match, we are trying to find a little period for them to breath and to face this second part of the December month.'' Mourinho said after the loss at St James' Park that Costa needed to improve his match fitness to continue to score prolifically after his strong start at Chelsea. The Spain striker will begin the contest on Wednesday. ''Yes, Diego starts tomorrow,'' Mourinho said. Sporting boss Marco Silva wants his side to ensure their Champions League future is entirely in their own hands by beating Chelsea. A draw would be enough for the Portuguese to advance to the last 16 as Group G runners-up behind Chelsea. Mourinho wants Chelsea to win against a side they beat 1-0 in Lisbon in September and for his compatriots to advance by Maribor beating Schalke in the group's other tie. ``Mourinho said the same in Lisbon for the first match,'' Silva said. ``He said that his desire was to qualify in first place and Sporting in second. ``We want to win independently of what Mourinho said. ``The players know that Chelsea's very hard. One point is enough, but they want three points. ``Tomorrow we can show everybody if we qualify there is justice in this group. We are playing very well. We want to win to qualify, but we are guaranteed the Europa League.'' Sporting's European future is secure even if Schalke overtake them, but they are determined to remain among Europe's elite in the Champions League. Silva will not keep his players informed of the score in Slovenia. Silva added: ``It's just one more match, the last one. It's important for us. We've just got to the second stage once. It would be fantastic for the club. ``One point is our target. If we fail we will wait for the other result. I will not tell the players the score in the other match. ``We want our objective. We will fight for our target.'' Nani, the winger on loan at Sporting from Manchester United, is sidelined with a thigh injury. http://m.espn.go.com/soccer/preview?gameId=405681&lang=EN&wjb= |
Match Preview Alan Pardew believes his Newcastle United side have the confidence to end the unbeaten opening to the season for Barclays Premier League leaders Chelsea on Saturday. Chelsea are yet to suffer defeat in any competition this season and travel to St James' Park six points clear of defending champions Manchester City at the top of the table. Their superb start to the campaign has led many to ponder whether Jose Mourinho's men could replicate the feat of Arsenal, who went the entire 2003/04 season undefeated. However, history suggests that this weekend's trip to the north east represents a significant hurdle for Mourinho, as the Portuguese has never won a BPL match at St James'. The London club were beaten 2-0 in the corresponding fixture last season, too, although the scorer of Newcastle's second goal on that day - Loic Remy - now plays for Chelsea. Newcastle United approach this clash on a run of one defeat in their last nine matches in all competitions and, following a midweek 1-1 draw with an improving Burnley side, Pardew believes his players can find weaknesses in a formidable Chelsea team, who he believes will “slip up” at some point in the season. "Mentally we are in a strong position and our confidence is high," Pardew said. "We have good spirit and are learning lessons along the way. We need to threaten Chelsea because they look terrific. They are a great team who are strong and organised. Somewhere along the line Chelsea will slip up and hopefully we can exploit any weaknesses they have." Pardew is hoping that midfielder Moussa Sissoko will again have an impact against Chelsea, following on from his home debut in January 2013 when he scored two goals in Newcastle's 3-2 win over the Blues. Sissoko returns following his red card in the 1-0 defeat at West Ham United and Pardew said: "Hopefully, he's learned his lesson. "He's been outstanding and our best player, and actually been very effective against Chelsea. I know Jose will have one eye on him to make sure he doesn’t impact on the game. He's a big player for us." But Newcastle's hopes of becoming the first team to beat Chelsea this term could be derailed by an injury crisis that has shown little sign of abating. Captain Fabricio Coloccini is still struggling for fitness after missing the last two games with a calf problem, while goalkeeper Tim Krul remains out with an ankle complaint and winger Rolando Aarons is a doubt due to a hamstring issue. Ryan Taylor (knee) is sidelined, along with long-term absentees Gabriel Obertan and Siem de Jong (both thigh), as well as Davide Santon (knee). Mourinho, meanwhile, can welcome back top scorer Diego Costa after the striker sat out Wednesday's 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur due to suspension, although Remy and Didier Drogba both scored in that comfortable victory. Midfielder Nemanja Matic is banned, but defender Gary Cahill has shown no symptoms of concussion after sustaining a head injury versus Spurs and could be in contention to play. Match Appointments Referee: Martin Atkinson Assistants: S Bennett, P Kirkup Fourth Official: R Madley Match Facts After five home matches without a win against Chelsea, Newcastle United have won the last two Barclays Premier League encounters with the Blues at St James Park.
