@All, Lets do some black history here, shall we. (I wrote the original version for that lil boy, Johnny)


AA, Negro, Noer, Niro, Mahogony, Ebony, Nubbian, Black, Nigger, all of these words have the same meaning. Negro is a Spanish noun descending from the word 'Niger'- meaning black. Somewhere in history it was translated to the N-word by those who refer to us as economically, politically and socially disenfranchise instead of the kings and queens, princes and princesses that we really are.

We are the descendant of the continent of Africa , countries like Niger or Nigeria hold our rich heritage. Unfortunately this misinterpretation of our heritage has been perpetuated among our own race. Rather than to obliterate this disrespectful term, we have adapted it as a cultural phrase. You've heard it " whats up my Nigga, or maybe you've said it " get out of my face Nigga". So why are we using this word and use it as our everyday language to communicate to or about ourselves? Let me dispel the myth, as a people, we are neither economically, politically nor socially disenfranchise.

Fifty six years after the emancipation proclamation, there's an emergence of blacks who capitalize in their God-given talent, embodied with a character of self-dedication, they joined together to make a New Negro Movement. And if these names doesn't ring a bell, you might be more familiar with Halem Renaissance which helped created the NAACP, other writers, actors, musicians, poets and others who came together for a new beginning. This explains Renaissance which means re-born.

People like Roy Brown, a name synonymous with the introduction of jazz, Duke Ellington, a jazz musician, Marcus Garvey, a civil right activist and Langston Hughes, a poet have all changed the history of the world. So who are you calling Nigga? We have held such confident offices in the history of this nation and Affirmative Action has got nothing to do with it. According to the definition, A Nigga will never be a Lawyer, a Doctor or a Teacher, yet we have so many AA or Africans who thrive throughout these industries. We also do hold and have held various distinct offices, from chairman of the FCC, to people like Michael Powell, his father Colin Powell, Barack Obama, Nelson Mandela and so on. We all want to be free from oppression yet we call ourselves this derogatory word.

Oprah Winfrey will never have had success or experience or the distinction of being the richest black woman in the world if she'd allowed the termination from her previous job to economically disenfranchise her. Instead, her presence is require in the most elite, social and political domains.

So, I'm sending a message to everyone who knowingly or ignorantly uses this word to describe our people to desist from doing so. Whether you're gangster rap who uses it communicate with your boys, or someone who looks down on those of us who haven't got a college education. Whatever the case, I'm conditioning you to discontinue the use of this word. It is somewhat implausible that forty years after the assassination of Dr Martin Luther King Jr that we still use this word that has no where in our lives and future. So I'm petitioning you to join me to deleting this word around our vocabulary as a people, as a Nation and the world.

This is just fantastic! For once, Nigerians agreed on a burning issue! It's a crazy world out there and there are real bad people out there too.

How quickly we blame these students for their ill-fated ignorant unplanned journey? What about their parents? Well,  a lot of these parents deemed it necessary for their ward to travel in order to once and for all heal the poverty line that has for so long taunted them. Who would blame them?

When it comes to studying abroad, there are whole lots of myth you have to understand. For those of us who seek a more just and secure world for our children or family members, let us continue to send a clear message that going abroad does not in any way guarantee success. But we should perhaps never forget how magical and wonderful it is to study abroad, especially in the United States. This is confusing, isn't it? Well, here we go again,

In today's world, irrespective of faith , we need that courage. We need a courage to say that it's wrong that three out of every five children born to a Nigerian family are born into poverty. Not taking side this time, I believe it's right to do whatever necessary to provide for those family members the care and education they need to live up to their God-given potential. It is wrong to live in poverty, who's fault you might ask? I guess no family or person would like to associate themselves (self) with that disease called poverty!

Now to the issue of studying abroad. Travelling abroad for many is seen as a getaway clause from frustrations and disappointments. Some see it as an avenue to acquire easy fortune, while others sees it as an opportunity to gain experience in the real world. Most Nigerians in the US are doing well for themselves but unwilling to give a helping hand.  

Reality check- As soon as you arrive in the states for your so-called degree, the Nigerians living there don't see you as a student. They see another poverty-stricken hungry mutherf**kher who would use the opportunity to get a green card! They see a desperate Nicca who would do anything to regularise his/her stay. They won't help you because they  also want you to go through what they've been through.

Finally, before leaving home, have a clear picture of what it would look like if you went to a strange country (this is for those who ignorantly rely on miracles abroad). Think about the humiliations of having to beg to survive, your strength (can you bear it?), being termed illegal aliens if you can't pay your fee and your visa runs out. Think about stereotype Nigerians who won't help you until you've suffered the worst, and finally, think about what that money (all the money you're taking abroad) can actually do in Nigeria in term of business and the rest.

Teach me English, I know you've read Cambridge. Patient, either medically or otherwise is a term use to refer to people like you. She wants a patient man, why not a man who ain't patient enough to listen to her daft saying? Teach me English!

Don't know what a God-fearing man look like but I sure do know people who could be just your almost-perfect soul-mate.

But come to think of it, you sound desperate, dump, and your typing is all over the place. You're even calling your so-called victim-to--be patient. Although you seem to be sick, you're even setting standards for what you want. Its your type that goes on to marry the almajiris and the blind Bartimaeus of our time.

Women all over the world struggle with not looking like a model. Half of them aspire to emulate the so-called artificial celebrities without having a second thought about the downturn and future consequences. Although there's now a trend of booty job, but the overall focus is now placed on getting a bosom job. bosom is a powerful tool a woman can arm herself with to at least boost her self-confidence and look 'attractive' to others.

bosom job is now a big business for surgeons and rake in million and millions of money every year. The crazy entertainment and fashion world are also crazing about this idea. Lots of ladies have been pushed to getting one done. To survive in the entertainment & fashion world, some believe you have maintain the status quo even after  you've given birth to dozen of children. But no one would tell you that as soon as you get your bosom done, there's no going back. You have to maintain the mess you led yourself into. There's always a consultation with your surgeon every 3 to 6 month to get the silicon replaced, and trend continues until forever, except if you want your flat bosom back.

We've seen cases of surgery gone wrong and the fatal consequence of such action. So ladies, don't believe the hype out there. Men are not after your so-called bosom but your personality. If you attract a man with your size 36DD, thats ever what he'd ever wanted. Who say you ain't beautiful enough with your 32C or slippers-like flat bosom. Package what you have and be natural. you don't need a bosom job to survive or feel good about yourself.

Just watching 48 Hours on TV, Mennnnn, a lot is going down . 48 hours is a real life police documentary about homicide crime. All victims in this programme are AA and all perpetrators are AA too. I see knuckle-head nicca killing their own blood brothers and even shooting and killing their friends.

Not saying their aint crime anywhere, but the rate of homicide within the AA community is on the rampant. Most of these killings are drug related. Others are gang members trying to impress their boss. Its just appalling and a sad sight to see.

Pls don't tell me the Police and the media are the ones killing these people, ok! Even if the police and the media do stigmatize and incarcerate AA, the killings can never be justified. I like my AA as my brothers and sisters but I ain't proud of their attitudes and behaviour.

The AA aint the only ones getting discriminated against, other black people are going through the same sh*t. You don't because of injustices resort to crime, do you?

Shouldn't the topic be 'Are Africans Proud of Africans? The more you label yourself AA, the more the white man become conscious about you being minority and all that.

The other day, an AA woman was called an African by someone and she immediately got angry and became irate. I was like, damn, whats the difference? Ofcourse it's a good thing that a black man is the president of the United States, but does this black man represent us in the white house? What policy has he got in place to better the lot of the AA's and the Africans?

The only issue with the AA's and Africans is that of cultural difference. We grew up apart but share the same beliefs and are in the same struggle. Being proud of the AA's should never have been the topic in the first instance, but rather being Proud of Blacks all over the world.

We do  understand what the likes of Rosa Parks, Dr Martin Luther King, Malcom X, The Knoxvilles civil right fighters, Frances Willard, Robertt Williams,, the likes of Andrew Young, Correta Scott King, Jesse Jackson and more recently Al Sharpon have done, ok. We are grateful for what they've done, especially helping we Africans by making our voices heard. Beside that,  bleep everything else.

More importantly, don't forget what our great fathers have done too; Usman Danfodio, Tafawa Balewa, Azikwe, Awolowo, Soyinka, Chinua Achebe, etc

I agree with Ron Oneal Whats up with this bashing of rap music and Hip Hop?? How can u ppl say Rap is deviant? It depends on what Rap music u choose to listen to. Hip Hop has also been a major positive factor in the AA communities, promoting morality conciousness and self respect. Who said it has to be Lil Wayne?
The ones buying Lil Wayne and Jay Zs album is by large white youths. And as stated before, big white owned record labels has bought up and control the mainstream Rap scene, and they promote bull s** and gangsa rap cus it sells. This does by no means portray the majority of black Americans.

Hey Africans, why this arrogance? And for black americans being in prison, cmooon! Do you realize you have a higher risk getting imprisoned because the color of your skin regardless of what you have done or not done. Crime is naturally higher among people in low income areas and blacks are the poorest group. Do you really blame them? Its not like after slavery they where uplifted as brothers with the same chances as white ppl. Prison in the state is our modern day slavery where black people work for nike and microsoft for free. And the prisons are privately owned so they r make money by filling the cells. Its a big time business.

And who said AA are not often targeted by the Police. The point is, the media do not simply stumble upon crime in the AA community, the vast majority of these so-called crimes are presented to journalists by the police, we know that, ok! We also know Police create crime waves by their crack down on a particular type of crime in an area i.e AA community. We are also aware that the AA are now 8 times more likely to be stopped and searched and discriminated against.

We Africans share and sympathise with you. We also do understand that AA are easily prone to crime due to inequality and lack of adequate welfare support. We are also not ignorant that whenever you got discriminated against, you remember the boat ride from Africa, . It is true that even the judges send AA to prison more than any ethnic minority for same offences committed. We understand your struggle, but can we just sit and allow these struggles to determine our future?

You cannot allow the crack-heads to torment you this long. Arise my AA brothers and get up from your slumber! You talked about Rap music not so negative, how many world known rap stars say or rap something good without mentioning the N word and without talking about big t*tty, booty, bling-bling and some other degrading stuff about their brothers. White people have money they build Walmart and employ their fellow crack-heads. Black people have money they buy jewellery and bling cars.

We understand what the civil war has caused you and how affirmative action still puts you in an unfortunate position. We know about J Edger Hoover and Kennedy who are part of your problems. But fellows, ten times shall a righteous man fall and Lord will lift him up again. Educate your fellow brothers about this, and let every one account for their selves and lets stop blaming the present and the past. The future is where our hope should be.

Don't actually know what you guys have done that I should be proud of. Even your Obama is of the dictate of the majority. He hate Africans but professed to originates from there. You know what I think, some of you guys are just educated illiterates. The few educated ones amongst you still calls Africa a country.

Although you're being marginalize, stigmatize, disproportionately under-represented in decision making bodies, and often used as scapegoat when new laws are passed, you lack the skills and motivation to go on yourselves and make it big.

Enough of the media blaming. Crack is destroying the AA community. You're just 13% of the entire population and already 27% of you are in Prison for drug related offences. I do understand from the positivist point of view that you commit crime because of the social and economic deprivation emanating from your govt, you're not making it easier for yourselves as well. 1 in 3 deaths among AA is homicide. You glorify rap music that is so disrespectful not only to women but to your mothers. Rap music account for the deviant behaviour amongst AA.

Your divorce rate is so high that your girls are running away from committing themselves to a long term relationship. You have baby fathers and mothers, but no real father/mother. Single parenting/lone parenting dominates the AA community. Single parent children accounts for all major crimes being committed by AA in the state.

Get yourselves educated to a standard that will leave the whites with no option than to recognise your superiority.

Its actually frustrating to see how gullible and overly-biblical dependant Nigerians can be. We live in a world of choice. Your attitude towards success will greatly rely upon the choices you make in achieving them. Now lets be more constructive, the issue of homosexuality-

From the positivist point of view, there are certain factors that brings about one being gay; your environment says alot about you. Most gay people are timid, shy, low self-esteem and disappointed people. Some have had heart breaks while some have been violated by men or women, some have deterministic nature, some grew up with only male or female around them, while some are just too scared to approach a woman. The guys with low self-esteem that grew up with guys around him would eventually end up sleeping with that guy, knowing fully well he can't talk to a woman. Others have had a once romantic relationship got shattered by either a break up or a sudden accident or death. Either case, they wouldn't want such to happen to them again, and would rather try out with  people of the same sex.

From the classicist point of view, the issue of choice came into focus. It is believe God gave everyone a choice; the choice to choose what is right or wrong.  Stealing is a matter of choice likewise homosexuality. Environmental, sociological, biological and psychological problems should not be used when trying to justify being gay. It has been proven time without number that while some result to homosexuality when faced with one problem or the other, there are also millions who when faced with the same problem refused to be part of anything homo.

Conclusion, it seems that grace, perseverance and the power to resist temptation plays a major part when talking about this issue of homo. The level of grace you have might be different to the level of grace I have. Your power of resistance might just be too powerful to fall a prey. Same thing happens to fornicators!  God created everyone pure, the environment, socio-economic problems we all face has been the architect of human downfall.
We should be very careful, sin is sin.

I commended you for clarifying issues on the status of ms okoye's kids. Good job on your part. But you ruined things with your next reply which says  everything and yet nothing at the same time.

If this is all that there is to this interview, then I doubt the truth in what she is saying by "the steps she took for her kids" If you are a british citizen and live in any part of the world, you can have your children as a woman and they will automatically be british too. You dont have to be physically present in the UK for them to also have the Citizenship. My conclusion, this story is flawed!

Hmm. Something not quite clear to me though. If  ms/mrs okoye is british, then (as some posters have pointed out), she doesn't have to give birth in the UK for her kids to become British nationals. All she has to do is apply on their behalf.

I can see some of us are enraged at the woman's nerve in voicing out what many Nigerian women secretly agree with    

But ms/mrs okoye is not the problem. We all know that 35 to 40 years ago, giving birth in North America or Europe (to guarantee a better life for your offspring) wasn't an issue. The question we should be asking is, why did things change and who is responsible?

And even more important, what are we going to do about it?

Do your research and vote in the next elections in April 2011. Make the right choices so that the oge okoyes of this world can have their children in any hamlet in Nigeria and their life chances will still be substantially similar to those of kids born elsewhere. Vote and protect that vote.

P.S. An election does not of itself and in itself mean democracy exists. But it is an important part of what democracy is. So please do not vote for a party/candidate and justify your choice by saying "they were going to win anyway", or "his diction is superb", or "he is from my ethnic group".  etc.

Vote for someone who will make sure your children have a country they can call their own.

The choice is ours to make.

The issue is not voting, the issue is about making our voting count. We have no qualified leaders who are capable of reconstructuring our democratic values. Get rid of the so-called presidential aspirants, the god-fathers, the tauts, and lets choose amongst ourselves a young, enthusiastic, vibrant, educated and sane person who can lead us into the future.

A crime was committed against this fella which in this case " the forgotten person" and all we could say is "why was he claiming to be a bad guy?". Where was his freedom of speech and expression, his right to liberty and security of person, his right to privacy,  and his right to be enjoyed without interference?

Doesn't that alone depict the mental state of most of us in Nija and yet we murder and crucify the govt for corruption? We as a people need to re-orientate ourselves and do away with these uncultured, uncivilized comments we give to victims of crime. Does the fact that a lady dressed in a certain way warrant her getting violated? Does fact that I left my laptop at the back seat of my car constitute it being stolen? Yes you might say I'm silly for leaving my laptop at the back seat of my car, but was it not my laptop?

What do we then do with the perpetrators? It seems to me that victims often suffer the most. I fear for Nigeria, I fear for you lagosians.

Anytime famous or ordinary citizen got robbed, gullible and stereotype Nigerian like you come up with some silly and unprofound excuse of why they got robbed. Shouldn't everybody go about their biz the way they want without any interference from anyone? So victims of crime should now be blamed for the heinous crime committed against them abi?

What happened to our civil liberty? Are we this pathetic that we can not hold the culprit ransom, and who decides where we go and what we should wear? Does religion have consensus on our moral values, if yes, those it alleviate poverty?, and why is it that we always blame victims and refuse to see the trepidation crime brings to our society?

This is the second time this girl has got robbed, shouldn't we be talking about security here? And why do some of you have low expectations? If you became famous tomorrow, would you love it if you get treated like Funke? Think, and I say again, think!
