What is the English name for Bolaji?

But it is not just a matter of title vs name. We see that what the Yoruba traditionally refer to as Eledumare is different in character, bearing and conduct from what the christians call God. When they are conflated it creates plenty of room for misunderstanding which is quite irksome to those who originally called their Source of creation Eledumare.

If you say it is all just a name for the source then would you be happy if scientific atheist equated yahweh to Big Bang. After all they are both the source.

There is much about Big Bang besides being the source that makes it unsuitable for equating with yahweh.

Similarly there is much about yahweh which makes him unsuitable and in fact utter irritating when equated with Eledumare.

Babinski:

Olorun means "Lord or Master of the Heavens".
Eledumare means "The Lord of the Creation and the Universe and all that is in it."
Oluwa means "Our Lord"
All the three can be simply translated as God in the English Language from Yoruba. They are not names but titles, since God itself is not a name but a title, just like King is also a title.
When Yoruba Christians sing and praise Olorun, they are praising God. They are praising God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. They are praising Yahweh.

Yahweh is the name of God the Father in Hebrew. His name is not even pronounced by Jews out of reverence. So you it is not easy to see any song of praise by Jews with Yahweh's name being directly called due to the high revrence for the name.

Your conclusion is wrong because it is based on faulty foundations and erroneous premises. Most religions only have titles for the Supreme God and not direct names. Allah for example is not the name of the Muslim God but rather a title that translates to God in English. And it is understandable because it is difficult for you to ascribe a direct name to someone who is far removed from you like the Supreme God and with whom you have no direct interaction.

Jews historically have a level of direct interaction and affinity with their Supreme God in Judaism in a way that is absent in most religions particularly traditional religions in Africa. So drawing parallels is very difficult.

Yes I wanted to say that because if you offer sacrifice to a specific Ogun, then you are worshipping or propitiating the head of that individual. The worship of any Orisa is the worship of Ori since that is a person that existed. It is the Oris that become exceptional that emerge as orisa or prominent Egungun. All ancestors are Egungun and the Egungun institution is to communicate with the ancestors.

Innovation is not bad per se but we should supplement hypothesising with practical experiments. When you come up with a theory, first try it out and if you do and it works then you can report the results to the rest of the world. However if you are going to just theorise blindly then there is no end to human imagination. You'll end up saying the most outlandish things and if anyone follows your theories in practice they may end up hurting themselves seriously.

Egungun is ancestor worship which existed in Yoruba land thousands of years before the birth of Alaafin Sango but he may have added some innovations to it though but the same name is what they call it among the Igbowho may have disconnected from the Yoruba for up to five thousand years if not more.

There is a distinction between Egungun Ara Orun. and Egungun Alaso.

But you can serve the Ori of other. people.

Ifa. can. tell a man that if he wants to. prosper he should go and feed the Ori of his wife. This happens a lot. or the ori of a. child.

Meanwhile Babalawo. can help a devotee to serve his Ori. A person that wants to feed his Ori can call his friends to help him to do so.

I don't even know what you. mean when you say 'worship'. Do you mean offering of ębo?

FOLYKAZE:

Yoruba religion system is a home abode for every form of theism including atheism. The only form that breaks away or fail to fall into Yoruba religion system is monotheism because many other Gods are present.

One Ori is a deity. This deity is personal to oneself and does not need other people to gather and worship on your behalf. Orisha are been worshipped unlike Ori by more than one person. Orisha is worshipped among family, society, group and village. This cannot be the case of Ori.

However, the fact you should note here is that there is more than one deity pesent in Yoruba religion system. Deities here are infinite. This is mega-polytheism just like hinduism.

Every individual are knoted to Ori and at least one Orisha. The fact that most people dont worship their orisha doesnt mean they should ne written off.

Irunmole is a Deity. Irunmole mean Irun-Imole. Irun is irinwo which is 400 while Imale are primodial spirits. They are what you call Orisha today. The english word for Orisha is god/deity. This shows that there are more than one god been worship which makes Yoruba religion system a polytheism

You do know Ahab i believe. He is not related to AIO in anyway and i don't know how Ahab is AIO's people. It's a joke that Ahab of all people is referred to as open hearted and honest.
Of course, you do know that Ahab put God's prop

PastorAIO:

Actually it is not well. Not for anyone deceived by Yhwh. It is a dangerous game to play with an entity that is given to mendacity and lying. I see my people going to yhwh with an open heart, making honest enquiries of yhwh, and being led to their destruction thereby.
'

I wondered why you were suggesting that Ahab was my people but I ignored it because I thought it was just another distraction. But I realise why you say that now. So let me explain.

Perhaps you haven't noticed but I'm a Nigerian. I consider Nigerians and africans in general to be MY PEOPLE. I refer to the deplorable state of my country Nigeria where YHWH has sunk his talons into the minds and souls of much of the population. I see the distress of the people. I hear their prayers and their pleas and supplications. I had an aunt crying in front of me wondering why my cousin, her son, inexplicably died in the prime of his youth, during morning prayers for that matter. She woke him up to pray in the morning. They got on their knees and prayed then he stood up and just collapsed.

I see the correlation between the rise of YHWH religious madness in Nigeria and the worsening conditions of the people. I take a look at the history of Yhwh's worship. I see that it is shortly after Rome adopted Christianity as it's state religion that Rome fell. As Europe embraced it Europe slipped into the dark ages. In order to rise out of this morass the europeans had to embrace humanism and curtail the influence of religion on politics and public life.

I see the wallowing in ignorance across Nigeria with the increased embrace of yhwh and I realise that we have landed ourselves in a very hot pepper soup with the worship of this ghoul. The actual text of the bible confirms that what is happening to us is what should be expected with the worship of this monster.

This is what I mean by my people going to yhwh with open heart and being led to destruction thereby.

Ezekiel 20

25Moreover, I gave them statutes that were not good and rules by which they could not have life, 26and I defiled them through their very gifts in their offering up all their firstborn, that I might devastate them. I did it that they might know that I am the LORD.

So to conclude we. can say that the. Bible contradicts. itself o n the issue. of. human. sacrifice.

Without a doubt. yhwh once. asked for. human sacrifices, even the. first. born of. all the Israelites. Yet. in. other passages it claims to denounce the practice.

But to trump it all, what we are told is the culminating event in the bible is itself a human sacrifice, to wit, the sacrifice of Jesus to yhwh for the remission of sins.

So while claiming to reject human sacrifice we find that the entire book points to human sacrifice as it's apotheosis.

Why are you laying undue emphasis on this ten commandments?

Guy, God has about 600 laws for the nation of Israel but because Moses asked Him questions regarding these laws which no nation has anything familiar that's why God wrote the first 10 on stone tablets. All the laws are equally commandments and important since they are laws from the same person: GOD! smiley

so before Moses no nation told it's people 'thou shall not steal'. all those laws...

Abeg these commands exist in other cultures long before Moses came and plagiarised them.

Where did 'you have opened your ear to me' change to 'a body you prepared for me'. By force by force the christians lie merchants want to make the passage about Jesus' death. To the point of literally changing and twisting the words of the Jewish scriptures.

Then they make up a whole doctrine of forgiveness or righteousness by faith. Only by lying and twisting the Jewish scriptures.

Who wants to be deceived? Did Josiah the favoured King of Yhwh want to be deceived?

Yhwh says to Josiah:

Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Regarding the words that you have heard, 19because your heart was penitent, and you humbled yourself before the LORD, when you heard how I spoke against this place and against its inhabitants, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and you have torn your clothes and wept before me, I also have heard you, declares the LORD. 20Therefore, behold, I will gather you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace, and your eyes shall not see all the disaster that I will bring upon this place.’”

1Kings 23

Josiah’s Death in Battle

28Now the rest of the acts of Josiah and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? 29In his days Pharaoh Neco king of Egypt went up to the king of Assyria to the river Euphrates. King Josiah went to meet him, and Pharaoh Neco killed him at Megiddo, as soon as he saw him. 30And his servants carried him dead in a chariot from Megiddo and brought him to Jerusalem and buried him in his own tomb.

He says God is given to mendacity and lying, yet can only point out an event. One would think that he'd have at least three or more for his efforts.

Why are you scurrying away from the light like a cockroach. You can't even mention my user name so that I know that you are addressing my post. Always slinking about in the darkness.

How many women must a rapist rape before you denounce him as a rapist and sentence him according to the law?

So one lie is not enough to call someone a liar. Not to mention the fact that this thread is full of many many many examples of what we are talking about. Someone even linked to another thread that Mazaje made a long time ago filled with examples of Yhwh's lies.

Here's an excerpt from the thread:

mazaje:

More of Yahweh's acts of deceit as recorded in the bible. . . .

JER 4:10 - Then I said, "Ah, Sovereign LORD, how completely you have deceived this people and Jerusalem by saying, 'You will have peace,' when the sword is at our throats."

JER 20:7 - O LORD, you deceived me, and I was deceived you overpowered me and prevailed. I am ridiculed all day long; everyone mocks me.

Its very clear that Yahweh has a penchant for sending lying spirits to people or deceiving people himself as recorded in the bible(Isaiah 37:7 and 2 Kings 19:7). The problem is if you read down in the book of Jeremiah you will see that Yahweh even acknowledge that he does evil and he apologized for the evil he did. . .

By the way what is it with Yahweh enticing people to send prophecies and then killing them at the same time. . .

EZ 14:9 - "'And if the prophet is enticed to utter a prophecy, I the LORD have enticed that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand against him and destroy him from among my people Israel.

It clearly shows that it is a modus operandi of yhwh. But of course you saw this but you are lying that I only gave one example. Which of course is no surprise after all your god is a god of mendacity so you too must be a liar.

Where did God use deception? i said that understanding God and His Word will help to have a balanced and clearer view of God. Who told you that lying is not good but the same God. cheesy cheesy

Having been deceived and feeling the trauma of realising I was deceived I realised this is a very unpleasant feeling and I would not like another human to go through the same thing.

Then often I might tell a white lie. A friend spends a lot of money on something stupid but I tell him it is nice because I don’t want to upset him.

Then I started to morally grade lies. I felt lies that were told with good intentions were better than lies that were told in order to, how does YHwh put it, ‘devastate them’.

Like I said, Ebo is often translated as sacrifice in English too, but when we look at all the contexts in which the word pops up we realise that a closer translation would just be A Nourishment, a feeding. As one can feed Ogun shrine so one can also feed a child. It would be odd to say in English that you've just given your Child a sacrifice when all you did was give him fried plantains.

jamesid29:

You're making the point we've all been trying to make to you sir. Almost every regular speaker of the Yoruba language, associates Ebo with the meaning Ritual offering. I even did a google search of it and everywhere I looked(even in sites and papers focused on yoruba tradition or spirituality), I didn't see any where ebo meant anything other than ritual sacrifice. You're actually the first person I'm hearing a different meaning from. I am not disputing you're interpretation of ebo because
a) Critical Resources on yoruba spirituality and traditions are not easily accessible, so just because I couldn't find one anywhere that matches what you said after a couple searches doesn't automatically mean I should discard it
b) I do not know enough about the Yoruba conception of certain things in other to authoritatively negate your argument.

Now let's assume you are correct: Imagine you are faced with a text that say, Iya re fun l'ebo

A perfect riposte to the arguments of jamesid has just occurred to me. I wish I thought of it back then.

While I do not deny that all over the internet and in books Ębö is translated as sacrifice, and even people who should know better do so as well there is a passage of Ifa scripture that demonstrates that this is totally wrong.

In Ofun Okanran we are told about when Eledumare was creating the world and humans. 'He' went to consult Orunmila (first thing that will shock western minds, is that Yes Eledumare too consults. Of course christians can respond that yhwh too consults his hosts of heaven as described in the bible, but this fact jars with the notion of omniscience etc that christians have developed). Ifa advised 'him' that if 'he' wants a world where justice is a principle so that the strong do not oppress the weak then 'he' must make ębö. Eledumare heeded the advise and made the 'sacrifice'.

If Ębö is an act of worship then who is Eledumare worshipping in this context? The only entity in this world that has no need of Ębö is Eledumare himself. Every creature needs ębö for sustenance and to facilitate it's life. It is ultimately Eledumare that 'Bö-s' the whole of creation.
