PoliticsRe: Nigeria's Kaduna State Declares 'tomato Emergency' by Pavore9: 11:03am On May 25, 2016
victorels:
I don't think any school farm is affected. But school farm focus on some cross like maize, cassava. They hardly goes on perishable. It is business for them.
I mean farms outside the school, how do students acquire practical knowledge if they do not interact with the local farmers?
PoliticsRe: Nigeria's Kaduna State Declares 'tomato Emergency' by Pavore9: 10:45am On May 25, 2016
victorels:
the farms that was affected are farms owned by peasants. Peasants own 90% of farms in Nigeria. They work alone and hardly receive any agricultural extension services because the government has no support for those programs in Nigeria. The universities are just hearing the news like we are doing now. They had no knowledge of this prio to this total loss. It is still a government issue in line with the illiteracy of the peasants. Standard private farms do have technical experts that monitors their farms and they are the ones making gains of this tomato crises in Nigeria.
Am in no way absolving the government at all level from blame but saying the universities are just hearing the news like we are doing now and they had no knowledge of it prior to this total loss proves that they are disconnected from their surrounding communities or don't the faculty and students in the department of Agric Extension department go on field study?

you are getting it wrong. GOVERNMENT and private sectors are not supporting the education sector. They work independently from the education sector. On consultation was made with the Nigerian universities. If it is true that they did send delegates to kenya, it is an eye service or avenue for looting.
BBC reported about the trip yesterday. Even if the universities were not consulted, shouldn't they have boldly told Nigerians they have the solutions to checkmate the menace? Last week here in Nairobi, l watched on TV some Professors discussing issues around vegetable farming and packaging and they made reference to what Nigeria is going through regarding tomatoes and how it could be controlled using tested methods.

Since am not in Nigeria, are there suggestions made to arrest the situation that was ignored?

Confronting fear of conflict can go a long way in minimizing the possibility of one arising. The armed herdsmen will certainly have something to think about. All l want is that the hunters be properly co-ordinated.
