Enugu airport will be reopened before Easter, Sirika reiterates

Senator Hadi Sirika, Minister of Aviation has reiterated that Akanu Ibiam International airport, Enugu closed down in August, 2019 for runway rehabilitation will be reopened for use before Easter. A statement issued in Abuja and signed by Mr James Odaudu, Director of Public Affairs in the ministry, said Sirika gave the assurance after an inspection visit to the airport on Thursday.

According to him, the Federal Government recognizes the importance of the airport to the whole of the South East region and the hardship occasioned by the closure. Sirika however, maintained that closing of the airport was done in the interest of safety and comfort of air travelers from the region.

He commended the handlers of the project on the quality of job done, adding that the airport, when delivered, would be one of the best in the country. On the reported shortage of some materials needed by the contractor, the minister said it was being addressed noting that it would not be an impediment to the completion of the project. “Work on the new terminal building at the airport will resume in earnest, regarding the budgetary provision for it in the 2020 budget. “The present administration met the terminal project at about 20 per cent but had taken it to about 60 per cent completion stage. The representatives of the Enugu State Government and the South East Governors Forum, who joined the minister expressed appreciation to the federal government for brave action in shutting down the airport for rehabilitation. Others on the visit with the Minister were officials of the Ministry of Aviation, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and consultants to the project.

If Brown is confirmed for the elite position by the Senate, he will become the highest ranking officer in the Air Force and oversee all units within the military branch.

Brown, 58, would also sit among the Joint Chief of Staff in the Department of Defense, which advises the President, secretary of defense, the Homeland Security Council and the National Security Council on military affairs.

Under the chief of staff position, Brown would also continue the Air Force's transition to focus efforts on defusing clashes with countries like Russia and China.

Brown will take command of an Air Force in transition, one moving from a decades-long priority on combating and containing terrorism to a new era of Great Power Competition,' the Air Force said.

Nigeria table tennis legend, Funke Oshonaike, has made history as she qualified for her seventh Olympic Games, a feat no woman from Africa has ever achieved.

Oshonaike defeated Cameroon’s Sarah Hannfou 4-1 (12-10, 11-4, 4-11, 11-7, 11-6) in the deciding match to make it to the table tennis event of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Oshonaike started her Olympics career at the Atlanta 1996 and since then she has been representing Nigeria at the flagship event.

The 44-year old has disclosed earlier that her performance is used to motivate and inspire the younger generation.

“I enjoyed every day I spent at the Games Village, it was an experience I will always cherish because it shows how the world should look like, everybody is the same. We share things and we unite in the Village. I look at that experience at what the world should look like. I am hoping that the power of sport will help to heal the wounds of the world.

”For me, I will be quitting but I want to use this my last experience to inspire and motivate young girls that you can achieve whatever you desire in life. You are the only one that can limit yourself in life,” Oshonaike said.

Oshonaike was 21 when she played her first match for Nigeria at the Olympics in 1996 in the doubles, partnering Bose Kaffo against Russia. She then played North Korea’s Kim Hyon-Hui (singles).

Oshonaike turns 45 this year.

Also, fellow Nigerian, Offiong Edem, has also qualified for the Tokyo Olympics.

Edem and Oshonaike are expected to play their last match against Tunisia and Mauritius later but their two wins have secured their places in Tokyo.

Aruna Quadri and Olajide Omotayo are also in the hunt for Olympic slots in Tunisia.
