Jobs/Vacancies / Re: A Job In Lagos For N55,000 Or A Job In Abuja For N70,000 For A Lagos Resident? by PDPvsAPC: 9:17am On Nov 27, 2013
UcLloyd:

It depends on where u plan on living in abuja. Like I said before, high cost of accommodation Is the only problem one tend to have in abuja. Self con, that salary is more than enough. Buh when u get a baby n move to a flat, my brother, u will struggle with that salary in places like Wuse, Garki gwarimpa n its like. Accommodation in abuja can wreck a man.

Thanks Lloyd...I ws told I could get resonable accommodtion (2 bedroom flat) around Lugbe on our way to the airport btw 600 - 700K.
I'm not familiar with Abuja because I have never lived there.

OP pls permit me to use your thread to get better response to. Thanks

Hello nairalanders, I just got an employment offer in Abuja to receive a total pay of 260k in the first 2 months and then 320k subsequently. I currently work in Edo state receiving 120k monthly.

1. Can someone please help with the cost of living in Abuja?
2. Will I be able to secure a reasonable 2 bedroom apartment because I will be getting married within the next 5 month?
3. A friend suggested that it is a good offer and that I can get a self contain for 250 to 300k and even if I get married, I can put up with my wiffy in a self contain and before baby starts coming, we can move to a better accommodation.

Pls I need sincere advice as I need to make a decision soon. I don’t know if I’m to accept it or not, considering the cost of living in Benin compared to Abuja. Thnks

Note: Both are construction companies (Benin is road while Abuja is Building construction).

Travel / Pilot Actions Caused San Francisco Jet Crash by PDPvsAPC: 8:45am On Jul 09, 2013
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Investigators trying to understand why Asiana Airlines Flight 214 crash-landed focused Monday on the actions of an experienced pilot learning his way around a new aircraft, fellow pilots who were supposed to be monitoring him and why no one noticed that the plane was coming in too slow.

Authorities also reviewed the initial rescue efforts after fire officials acknowledged that one of their trucks may have run over one of the two Chinese teenagers killed in the crash at San Francisco International Airport. The students were the accident's only fatalities.

National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Deborah Hersman said investigators watched airport surveillance video to determine whether an emergency vehicle hit one of the students. But they have not reached any firm conclusions. A coroner said he would need at least two weeks to rule in the matter.

The students had been in the rear of the aircraft, where many of the most seriously injured passengers were seated, Hersman said.

The NTSB also said part of the jet's tail section was found in San Francisco Bay, and debris from the seawall was carried several hundred feet down the runway, indicating the plane hit the seawall on its approach.

Investigators have said Flight 214 was flying "significantly below" its target speed during approach when the crew tried to abort the landing just before the plane smashed onto the runway. Authorities do not know yet whether the pilot's inexperience with the Boeing 777 and landing it at San Francisco's airport played a role.

The airline acknowledged Monday in Seoul that the pilot at the controls had flown that type of plane for only a short time and had never before landed one at that airport.

Asiana spokeswoman Lee Hyomin said pilot Lee Gang-guk had logged nearly 10,000 hours operating other planes but had only 43 hours in the 777, a plane she said he was still getting used to.

It's not unusual for veteran pilots to learn about new aircraft by flying with more experienced colleagues. Another pilot on the flight, Lee Jeong-min, had 12,390 hours of flying experience, including 3,220 hours on the 777, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in South Korea.

Lee Jeong-min was the deputy pilot helping Lee Gang-guk get accustomed to the 777, according to Asiana Airlines.

It was unclear whether the other two pilots were in the cockpit, which in the Boeing 777 typically seats four. But that would be standard procedure at most airlines at the end of a long international flight.

NTSB lead investigator Bill English said pilot interviews were going slowly because of the need for translation. The interviews began only after agents from the Korean Aviation and Rail Accident Investigation Board arrived from South Korea.

New details of the investigation have also raised questions about whether the pilots may have been so reliant on automated cockpit systems that they failed to notice the plane's airspeed had dropped dangerously low, aviation safety experts and other airline pilots said.

Information gleaned from the Boeing 777's flight-data recorders revealed a jet that appeared to be descending normally until the last half-minute before impact.

The autopilot was switched off at about 1,600 feet as the plane began its final descent, according to an account of the last 82 seconds of flight provided by Hersman.

Over the next 42 seconds, the plane appeared to descend normally, reaching about 500 feet and slowing to 134 knots (154 mph), a 777 pilot for a major airline familiar with Hersman's description told The Associated Press. The pilot spoke on the condition of anonymity because his company had not authorized him to speak publicly.

But something went wrong during the following 18 seconds. The plane continued slowing to 118 knots (136 mph), well below its target speed of 137 knots (158 mph) that is typical for crossing the runway threshold. By that time, it had descended to just 200 feet.

Eight seconds later, with the speed still falling, Hersman said, the throttles were moved forward, an apparent attempt by the pilot to increase speed. But it was too little, too late.

Five seconds later, at 50 percent power, speed began to increase.

A key question raised by the NTSB's account is why two experienced pilots — the pilot flying the plane and another supervising pilot in the other seat — apparently didn't notice the plane's airspeed problem.

Part of the answer to that question may lie in whether the pilot flying, after switching off the autopilot, still had the plane's autothrottle engaged during the descent.

Aviation safety experts have long warned that an overreliance on automation is contributing to an erosion of pilots' stick-and-rudder flying skills. It's too soon to say if that was the case in the Asiana crash, but it's something NTSB investigators will be exploring, they said.

"It sounds like they let the airplane get slow and it came out from under them," said John Cox, a former US Airways pilot and former Air Line Pilots Association air crash investigator.

"There are two real big questions here: Why did they let the airplane get that slow, and where was the non-flying pilot, the monitoring pilot, who should have been calling out 'airspeed, airspeed, airspeed,' " Cox said.

More than 180 people aboard the plane went to hospitals with injuries. But remarkably, 305 of 307 passengers and crew survived, and more than a third didn't even require hospitalization. Only a small number were badly hurt.

The passengers included 141 Chinese, 77 South Koreans, 64 Americans, three Canadians, three Indians, one Japanese, one Vietnamese and one person from France. Asiana President Yoon Young-doo planned to leave for San Francisco later Tuesday to visit hospitalized passengers, according to Asiana spokeswoman Lee Hyomin.

Twenty-three South Koreans have so far left for San Francisco to visit their injured family members and relatives since the crash, according to South Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

After the crash, three firefighters — and two police officers without safety gear — rushed onto the plane to help evacuate trapped passengers, including one who was trapped under a collapsed bulkhead.

They had gotten everyone off the craft except one elderly man, who was in his seat, moaning and unable to move.

"We were running out of time," San Francisco Fire Department Lt. Dave Monteverdi recalled Monday at a news conference. "The smoke was starting to get thicker and thicker. So we had no choice. We stood him up and amazingly, he started shuffling his feet. That was a good sign...we were able to get him out and he was pretty much the last person off the plane."

The two dead passengers were identified as 16-year-old students from China who were scheduled to attend summer camp in California with dozens of classmates.

One of their bodies was found on the tarmac near where the plane's tail broke off when it slammed into the runway, the other was found on the left side of the plane about 30 feet (10 meters) away from where the jetliner came to rest after it skidded down the runway.

The flight originated in Shanghai, China, and stopped over in Seoul, South Korea, before making the nearly 11-hour trip to San Francisco.

NTSB investigators are also sure to examine whether pilot fatigue played a role in the accident, which occurred after a 10-hour nighttime flight. As is typical for long flights, four pilots were aboard, allowing the crew to take turns flying and resting. But pilots who regularly fly long routes say it's difficult to get restful sleep on planes.

The accident occurred in the late morning in San Francisco, but in Seoul it was 3:37 a.m.

"Fatigue is there. It is a factor," said Kevin Hiatt, a former Delta Air Lines chief international pilot. "At the end of a 10-hour flight, regardless of whether you have had a two-hour nap or not, it has been a long flight."

The two teenagers killed in the crash were close friends and top students.

Wang Linjia showed talent in physics and calligraphy; Ye Mengyuan was a champion gymnast who excelled in literature. Both were part of a trend among affluent Chinese families willing to spend thousands of dollars to send their children to the U.S. for a few weeks in the summer to practice English and hopefully boost their chances of attending a U.S. college — considered better than China's alternatives by many Chinese families.

The girls posted their last messages on their microblog accounts Thursday and Friday. The last posting from Wang said simply, "Go."

Politics / I Know Tinubu, I Know Buhari, They Cannot Mix – Bode George by PDPvsAPC: 7:31am On Jul 09, 2013
Chief Olabode George, former military governor of Ondo State and former Deputy National Chairman, People’s Democratic Party, PDP, in this interview, responds to topical issues in the polity and his party. Excerpts:

President Goodluck Jonathan, the leader of your party is in the eye of the storm over 2015. How do you feel?

Nigeria has come this far because the concept of the PDP constitution has sustained democracy up till now. Never in the history of our nation have we been able to sustain democracy from 1999 and we are now in 2013: that is talking about 14 years. Never!

So, there is no need to pull anybody down because the man you pull down will also pull you down and so, where have you gone? And it is there in Romans Chapter 14 that whosoever that God has given an authority, he did not get there by his own effort. Let us support him. He is our leader and it is our nation.

Some of these people who have been given opportunities to govern smaller states are now coming to say that they know more than we know they know. When they were in government, they saw governance as a source of unimaginable income. The amount of acquisitions; the maddening amount of acquisition of the prime property, the assets of the state they were given, is mind boggling.

Conversion of land for personal use
Every day people wake up, what you see is unbelievable. Ikoyi has now become another high rise prime area. Who owns these properties? All the land in Ajah, lands dedicated for hospitals have been converted to their personal use. Hotels have been springing up, Local Government secretariats that had been in existence before they were born have been acquired.

Hostel of the only Nursing School in Lagos State, located on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, has already been acquired. And these are the same people who are asking Nigerians that, “Yes, we can perform! We would govern Nigeria well.”

Is there a semblance of democratic practice in that party of theirs? So, I chuckle when I see these first class jokers, who have been tested and have been found to be complete failure, saying that they want to go and rule Nigeria.

They want to join up with General Buhari. But the General Buhari that I know; his standing, his personality, his commitment, his belief is exact opposite to these characters here. So, sometimes I get confused that General Buhari is sincerely talking to these men. It is like a movie to me. It is like a theatre house. How can water and oil mix? What he has stood for in his life and what they stand for; they cannot meet. They are like day and night.

And they have the temerity to say that they are the leader of Yoruba, they are carrying Yoruba people. I wish tehy would go back and read the history of the Yoruba people. Because, they are fake. No semblance of the real, true genuine Yoruba.

They do not have anything that look like the depth, the norm, the belief of the Yoruba people. What a huge joke therefore! I wish one day that somebody would bring him on the television for public debate. I am challenging him to come on the television for a public debate; let us talk to Nigerians. Let us debate before the people what they have done for this country.

You sound angry. Why?
You know people would say yes, Bode George is angry. No! Very soon I will be 70 years old. What else am I looking for? Am I going to start all over again? Can I live another 70 years before I pack up and go back to my God? No. Mine may be the only voice in the wilderness but I will continue to shout at the top of the mountain that this is a path of perfidy they are going through.

Righteous way
It is not a righteous way. Now they are shouting that Jonathan has not performed and that they would push him out of government. Tinubu that was governor of Lagos State for eight years, what did he do?

Even the young man that is still running Lagos now, Babatunde Raji Fashola has done much better than him. Does he allow him to work? They say he is de facto leader, that is what he calls his name. All the things about these jokers in ACN are laughable.

The other one in Osun, who no longer calls himself an engineer but ‘Ogbeni’, what is his performance there? Lai Mohammed is always talking on top of his voice, talking garbage! I knew him when he came to Lagos as a Level 6 or Level 8 officer at FAAN. Today he can talk, tell stories and lies.

He said the Federal Government has done something injurious to the judiciary and to the psyche of Nigeria by proscribing Boko Haram. Are these guys genuine? How can anybody wake up and say the government has done something injurious by proscribing Boko Haram? Are they alright? Oh!

Why are you creating unnecessary revolts to chase him out of government?

And I keep repeating the letter of Paul to the Roman Chapter 14 and it is very clear that he that God has appointed on His authority, he is there on the authority of God. No human being should attempt to pull him down because the curse will be on whoever does that.

The polity is increasingly charged under President Jonathan. Don’t you fear a people’s revolution?

I am appealing to Nigerians to be patient. The challenge is the same all over the globe but we can surmount it with patience and steadiness. When I see this woman from World Bank, Oby Ezekwesili, who comes here and be ranting about and doing all that, at the end of it I get very aggrieved because she now ends up and says, “I am not a politician.” Very insulting! I do not know what her background is but let her come and face some of us here who are politicians. I am not afraid to say I am a politician.

Let her leave her high office and go down to the people and appreciate that the very micro unit of her contribution is nothing. These are the jokers being promoted in the media. Elections are coming, let her come and follow us to go and canvass and face the people. Then, she will stop talking the way she is talking.

Do you know what I hate to hear? “I am not a politician!” As if politicians are evil minded people. It is our country; let them also come and join and make it well. Let her come and try and go through election to become senate president, vice president or whatever and convince Nigerians that she is better. Not gassing on the television or grandstanding, looking for cheap popularity.

We have gone on since 1999. This is 2013; 14 years of uninterrupted democracy. It has never happened in the history of this country. Whatever anybody can say, it is a record. Thanks to our party, the PDP. Thanks to the founding fathers of PDP who conceptualized this zonal set up, Turn-by-Turn Nigeria Limited because Nigeria is a country and not yet a nation. We are grapping, we are grouping, we are struggling to make it a nation.

What problem does your party have with some opposition parties coming together in APC?

APC is already an obsolete drug. Before they start they are finished. They say, “Hand over power to us.” But you are not yet tested. The little one we tested you on, you are an abysmal failure; an absolute failure. We saw what you were but you are now richer than the bank. More properties than the state. That is all they can show.

Let them come to television and debate it. How many children of the poor have they benefited? Jakande established his education for the poor people with scholar scheme for children of poor people to go to university. He founded the Lagos State University, LASU, also so that children of the poor could access university education at ease. You now pay a minimum of N250,000 per annum to access education in that same Lagos State University. That is a quarter of a million! The palm oil seller, roasted plantain seller, akara seller, can they afford that? So, you are saying that their children should never have the opportunity?

What these jokers are doing now is for the privileged so that only the privileged can get there. Fashola also knew how he started. Was his father a rich man? Today, he is governor. If they had made it impossible for him to go to school, would he have ended up being a governor? Let them just think because, if we do not, one day and I repeat one day, the electorate will decide. We do not want what happened in Egypt or in Tunisia here. We do not want any Arab spring here. No. Let there be peace.

More money seems to be going to all tiers of government, but sir, is there no way that the presidency can monitor the outflow?

What is the president’s business with the activities of the governor? It is the members of the state House of Assembly who can challenge the governor about his revenue, expenditure and what he is doing with the money. But we know that when the man sits down in one room and selects his surrogates who go to the House of Assembly, he does not allow people who are being sponsored, supported by their constituencies to go there. What do you expect?

Like what is happening in Lagos State where Bola Tinubu just hand picks people who go to the Lagos State House of Assembly and who therefore cannot challenge him when necessary? They do not even have congresses like we do in PDP. Tell me any day you have seen them doing a national convention. The emperor decides and that is the man who says he is a democrat.

The company which collects revenues on behalf of Lagos State Government, who owns it?

People who are in charge of highway managers, who are they? Even the agency that has the places where dead people are buried, who owns them? Now they are sand-filling the Bar Beach. Generations before them had Bar Beach. Go to what the Alpha Beach has become and see the environmental impact on those villages there. What madness! What greed!

Narrowing of channel
Look at Isale Eko here! That is the only channel that takes water from the whole of Lagos Island into the Lagoon blushed with that nonsense they are doing there. Go to Parkview, they are sand-filling so that they would narrow the channel until it would meet Lekki. That Lagoon is the natural gift that God gave Lagosians. They have narrowed it now out of senseless greed. Someday I pray that when the flood or earthquake will come, he must be held responsible.

Let Tinubu deny it. It is this man that now has the temerity to speak out of his mouth and say Jonathan is not doing well and so he wants to rule Nigeria. He? I would cease to be a Nigerian. I am not joking. I would go to Ghana or Togo and beg for citizenship because they would destroy this country. The good thing is that this nation is so massive for him to comprehend.

The dynamics of this nation; he says he is carrying Yoruba people to go and join Buhari and form a national government. They are joking because where we were in 1999 is where they just want to start from now. What a joke! What a joke!!

To what extent will the crisis in the NGF affect your party?

I have been away for sometime but my opinion is that, we need to lock ourselves behind a door and tell ourselves some serious bitter truth. I am now begging them to admit that all sides are wrong: the party and the governors. And it is not a blame game now. It is a game for the future of our nation. So, it is time to calm all nerves. Let us all come back so that we can have a family meeting. Of course you can see the oppositions are happy. They think they can use the situation to destroy our party. Which of them; any of those under ACN of Bola can talk to him?

Have you students never stopped for a brief moment to wonder at the state of our university environment and how debasing most universities tutors offices and lecture halls are? Some even share office spaces and have had to furnish their offices using their personal funds. I had a very brief stint with one of the major oil companies when I returned to this country. There was so much at my disposal- luxury office space, everything good that you can imagine as you read this were part of the perks the job offered but I had to leave the job for lecturing in one of the fed.unis. This was what made me decide to return home and I was only diverting from my original intent taking up the initial job.
I practically shuddered when i was told how much I'd be getting as a tutor with a doctorate degree but i went ahead with the job.
My second disappoint was being shown a store room sort of as my office and the worse part was having to share it (i love my personal space and i was completely put off).
Told them straight up that i wasn't going to work in such immediate environment. Was promised an extreme make-up of the space but no i didn't get that even after series of applications from me and the dean to the works dept. Did I say the dean's office was also a turn-off? uncountable yeses to that. Well, the summary of this all is that I had to cough out a little over a million to get my office fixed to my taste. I've been promised a refund but i'm not banking on that. Was told of office reshuffling couple of months after i'd fixed my office but i had to make it known upfront to the authorities that I wasn't moving an inch. Then came the case of my having to temporarily give up my space for a foreign prof who was on his sabbatical. I bet you know what my response was. I even had to contribute about 40 percent of the money used in purchasing a power generating set for the faculty as the one they had was a noise mill right behind my office.
I have spent alot providing study materials for students and some other things i've had to personally fund.
I was opportuned to be in the office of one of the legislators in Abuja when I was doing an EIA job and i was suprised at all the facilities my eyes saw not to mention the bunch of men clad in suits all in the name of PA. I asked myself what particular jobs this lot did that they provided these men to assist them and at the end of the month, taxpayers monies will appear in their various accounts.
I could go on and on but i'll stop here. I think you students deserve better than what you're currently being dished out. I don't see students unanimously revolting in this country. Why is that? We're richly blessed in this country. You and your teachers deserve better learning environment, working environment and working conditions. So if you lot can't stand up for yourselves, let your tutors do that for you while you stop

spewing trash fron your gobs.

Politics / Re: Akwa-Ibom Mini-water Project Collapses Killing One by PDPvsAPC: 8:31am On Jul 01, 2013
Eko Ile:

Apabio was careless, irresponsible and reckless for lack of diligence per the kind of shady quacks and incompetent people and contractors he employs. He carelessly endangered the lives of his own people because of his incompetency and lack of care.

Unfortunately for the people of Akwa Ibom, this sorry man is more concerned about NGF and election rigging and other anti social activities.

What a sad loss for the dead. Smh...

My friend please try and remove sentiments from your comments. You are accusing Akpabio of using incompetent people as contractors. Do you think it is easy to engage the likes of Julius Berger and Setraco for construction projects? If Akpabio wants shady projects, he won't have engaged any of the aforementioned contractors for his road and mega building structure projects in the state.

Mind you, you don't expect the governor to also engage big time contractors for a mini water project. The blame should strictly be on the contractor and engineers handling the project. Moreover, the project did hasn't been handed to the state.

You talked about state monitoring team. Now we don't know if they had warned or cautioned the contractors if they had notice any deficiencies in the project. Let's try and give constructive criticism instead of this hatred you and Garri is demonstrating on this forum.

The least you could do is get the spelling of propaganda right.

And where was it stated that the road contracts were just awarded.? He said every year, they award contracts. This year, it's 70. last Last year was 160. It He said nowhere in the article that he just awarded this year's contracts.
