Na Wa O!! These kin' people sef!!! |
@ poster YOUR HEAD IS NOT CORRECT!!! |
hey! how come nobody is talking about their very first production , a stage play i think it is, in 1989/1990, THE UNPROFITABLE SERVANT they called it, a beg if anyone knows if they've done a film of that or recorded the stage play let me know, or better still Mount Zion's contact details, i can still remember the haunting refrains of the last scene of that play,"i will obeeeeeeeeey!!" |
Do i free to talk? |
@poster, maybe you should answer this question - to you, what constitutes wealth, a) ability to make loads of money on your OR b) being paid a stupendous salary by people who are making the money. The answer to that and your view of nigeria's economic future should guide your decision. I was in the same dilemma some years back, i had a job in a bank, i was fed up and the engineering offers i got meant a serious pay-cut, i opted out and believe me, today i am better off for it. I got the opportunity to travel all over the world on a consultant status, this is in addition to getting higher degrees and proffessional qualifications abroad, opportunities that came my way through engineering, although not everyone can be as fortunate as that you still need to be very careful when making your decision. if you reject the bank job and you are unable to perform excellently in engineering, you would have made the sacrifice for nothing, even if you are good but the firm is in dire straits, you are still done for. so my guy, think it through before you make any decision o!! |
Last man posting, @mishooo i no fit die now abi ke, (and mind yourself o, i no get wife for nairaland ) |
@ oyb, thanks for that expose on ishamel, i now understand that his argument is based on the agelong rivalry between HND and BSc holders in engineering, let me just say that its not fair to judge one on the basis of the other because HND and BSc holders are not taught the same things in school and they are not expected to do the same job in the industry. But I still say it loud and clear, anybody that says that nigerian engineers are incompetent should give me an example of an engineering scheme, principle, software or skill that is being used anywhere in the world that nigerian engineers lack and i will forever keep my mouth shut!!! (Please let no ignoramus reply to this because the next thing is that someone will start referring me to the work of construction companies) oyb, e be like say u wan open an online project mamnagement planning and control class here o!! u wan teach them the contents of five years of engineering school in 20 mins? i wish u the best sha!! |
am just coming accross this post and meeeeeen, am almost dead with laughter!!! ishmael and all the others who believe that nigerian engineers are not competent might have a basis for their opinion but that doesnt mean they are correct. Do you know that no engineer can never, ever design a bridge or any other specialised structure ouside his area without the input of local engineers? yeah, simply because local requirements for behaviour of materials under different conditions vary, that is why we have the nigerian code of practice, british code of practice, american code of practice canadian codes etc, fine, nigerian engineers might be disadvatanged due to the paucity of cutting edge technology in this country but i stand to challenge anybody here to name an engineering software or engineering principle that is not being utilised in nigeria!!! Maybe you have not heard of people like Engr. E.I.I. Etteh who wrote the current bridge code being used all over the world, his office is in Ibadan! or Engr Shola Sanni who led the Engineering team for the steel design of the Olympic stadium in china and the Redeemed Christian Church Auditorium, his office is in lagos!!! I have practiced engineering in Lagos and the US and i know that while nigerian engineers are disadvantaged they are by no means incompetent. i believe the basic question then is "why are expatriates being used in the engineering industry" well my answer is:- CORRUPTION!!! how many engineering consulting firms, (not construction companies o!) i mean consulting firms where engineering is really being practiced have expatriates as their top engineers, name two and i will forever keep my mouth shut!!! the construction companies that employ technicians and call them engineers do that so they can 1. repatriate their profit abroad and 2. they can claim tax excepmtions. You would ask, why are foreign construction firms there in the first place, well be informed that the kind of capital needed to set up a first rate engineering construction (not consulting mind you) company in nigeria is simply too much and no nigerian bank can finance such, that is why the foreigners with the money to acquire the equipment are moving in, but then anybody can own/work in a construction company, all you need is a good foreman but you need to be an engineer before you can work in a consulting firm and that is why i say that the level of competency of nigerian engineers can only be judged by the output of the engineering consulting firms in nigeria and not by the preformance of the construction companies. Somebody asked if american or british engineers go to other countries for training, well the answer is yes!!! they do, the strand 7 training module in south africa in november was well attended by engineers globally, also the update course on EII Bridge code in makurdi had over180 engineers from over 50 countries in attendance!!! |
and that makes me the winner, |
@unicorn, its as if this is a forum for concrete and steel boys o!! ![]() yeah, you're right site men can task henry kissinger's diplomatic skills, as par ground retention, depending on your client's budget and the scope of the project you might want to investigate sheet piling as an alternative, Trevi Foundations has one technique they use, am not quite clear about it now but with a little research you should get what you need!!! |
@sinaoye unicorn has said it all, as long as you are an engineer, and u understand the 1st principles of the profession, all the softwares are just tools and u might not need any specialised training, just keep in touch with other users, u've challenged my mind and am reading up on the lamella clarifier, its really going to help in my next project (an ETP for NBC in Challawa) please am expecting those pictures o! when u are ready for the software, if you have a gmail accnt, i'll try and see if i can attach and send @unicorn, u have a kindred soul here broda, i left a bank to come back to full time engineering to and believe me man, i havent regretted it one day, the billions might not come now but it they are on the way!! that i am sure of!! one way i try to avoid site workers' problem is by relating to their supervisor or foreman and not with them directly, although that could backfire at times too, one just has to rely on one's sense of judgement of human beings to get the best of out of them without making enemies, |
@sinaoye am a civil/structural engineer too, am into design majorly, it was interesting to read about your site challenges, i really feel you, because ave had quite a number of experiences like that too, which schoold did u finish from and when, am from UI (CLASS OF 2002) do u know anything about NIStructE, ICE, AISCE, those are shortcuts to getting your COREN stamp rather than going through the highly politicised NSE, which software are u familiar with? STAAD PRO, RISA 3D, SCALE, CADSRC, CADS STEEL, and of course AutoCAD, Am quite interested in the lamella technique you mentioned,i did some Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) design for Coca Cola in Apapa, Owerri and Asejire and i'd like to compare our methods with yours!! holla back and lets rub minds!!! @timkerberry from your post i infer that you're a graduate of civil engineering, if you finished with a 2:1, can work in lagos and under 30 email your CV to titemi_ni@yahoo.com before thursday with a note that u're tinkerberry from nairaland, it would also help if you can scan your credentials and attach it to the CV. |
@oriki i am very much tempted to reply your last post in the same vein but i can see that it was made last week and since i'm just seeing it (i've been out of town), and you haven't made any other comment, i'll assume that particular post was made in ignorance. i'm not in the habit of making personal statements on the web and it will do us all a whole lot of good if you take the pains to read all the posts on this topic before forming an opinion or passing a comment. you mentioned ANA, am happy about that because it might interest you to know that intellectual banditry is something that particular body is trying to tackle right now and i believe that if there are questions that should be asked about the last competition, questions which have been proved to be genuine ones (judging from dipo's replies and explanations), questions which had actually been able to point out some real errors and had brought about a conscious effort at being better prepared on the part of the organizers, then nobody and i repeat nobody, no matter how highly they think of themselves or how well connected they believe they are, has a right to insult those whose minds have not been moulded in the line of conformists. I don't want to go into name dropping or bragging, so i can only say that if indeed you wish to see any of my works (which you mentioned first by the way) for the purpose of this discourse, then you really need to be told that the atitude of "my father's farm is bigger than yours" does not befit adults. Cheerio!!! |

Rescuer Ko, Rescuer ni!!! |
Hi Dipo, you can see am not alone in my quest for answers to all the questions and observations above, as it is you've not yet given specific answers to the questions. Please it will help a lot if you address these issues and not just be generally vague. I hope you'll reply soon!!! |
for this post!!! I no fit shout!! All hail ayefele, the mangirl of nairaland!!! |
ohhhhh lysaaaaa!!! the girl of my nightmares!! |
This is an issue that has caused sabres to be drawn in many a literary review class, However, its instructive to know that Chinua Achebe has won every and i repeat every major and international prize in the literary world except the nobel prize, while Wole Soyinka, while not having the same plethora of awards however has the only one that matters (?) in his kitty!!! The question then is: By what yardstick, what criteria do we compare them, personally, i believe that until Achebe wins the Nobel Prize, it is not fair to both authors to compare either their persons or their works!!! |
Omigod, One of my fav writers, He also wrote Double Trouble, one of my all time favourites, Ey yah may his soul rest in peace |
@poster!! i challenge you on the accuracy of this statement dipotepede:i don't want to conclude that you are a scammer (intellectual property pilferer actually) but the story writing competition you claim to have hosted some time ago brings serious doubts to my mind about the "genuineness" of some of your offers, even the writers that were shortlisted were not informed about the subsequent details and i stand to be corrected on the assumption that the competition was not actually concluded and a winner declared, the question then is, what happened to the entries and the tons of literary materials that were submitted, i hope someone has not been feeding fat on the products of other peoples "sweat"!!! now we are to submit poems again, i think before anybody decides to stick out his/her neck, these issues need to be explained. Oluwaseun omo Osewa, i think you should take note of this!!! Dipo, nothing personal you know, just want explanations, I love you too!!! The Pen that Folds!!! |
Pass the ganja |
people! don't you think one should be a little bit cautious before commenting or advising in this kind of case? forget about the sentiments and all o!! there are some questions in my mind begging for answers, what is the father's current state now, is it that he is now comfortable and regretting his actions (or inaction) of the years past now wants to make things right? or is it that he is now married and finding it difficult to have a child now feels compelled to claim his child. Are you sure the guy is not gay, a user, or a general layabout who just wants to use the child as a leverage to try and get back into your life so as to drain you? its good to let the child know his father some had said but the truth is after all things considered, will the boy be better off after the experience. After all, like the custody courts will say, the child's interest is paramount!!! |
(and mind yourself o, i no get wife for nairaland
