Many of the girls are working in hotels and nightclubs after being sold to prostitution rings by human traffickers, according to a fact-finding mission carried out by the agency in collaboration with Malian authorities in December. NAPTIP's Arinze Osakwe told CNN most of the girls said they were lured by human traffickers who promised them employment in Malaysia. The new trend is that they told them they were taking them to Malaysia and they found themselves in Mali. They told them they would be working in five-star restaurants where they would be paid $700 per month," Osakwe, who was part of an earlier NAPTIP rescue mission, said. Some of the girls had been sold as sex slaves in gold mining camps in northern parts of Mali, he said. Officials from the agency under Operation Timbuktu rescued 104 Nigerian girls from three brothels in Bamako, Mali's capital in 2011. They were forced to become sex workers in mining communities in northern Mali. "We brought back 104 girls just from three ramshackle brothels, and those were the ones that were even willing to come. They were mostly between the age of 13 and 25, and they had been trapped in the country for many years," Osakwe said. "Since then, we have been working with local authorities and receiving reports from the Nigerian embassy in Bamako that the number of Nigerian girls trafficked to Mali has spiked tremendously," he said. The agency said it is working with Malian authorities, the International Organization for Migration and National Emergency Management Agency to send the girls back to Nigeria. Every year, tens of thousands of Nigerians are trafficked illegally to destinations abroad especially Europe. Around 97 percent of victims are women, and 77 percent have been sexually exploited by their traffickers, according to IOM estimates." |

Look, I don't know if there were red flags that you ignored or if she successfully hid her behaviour and convinced you she's an angel on earth. Either way you should have divorced her much earlier and not had a kid with her. In fact no one should have a kid right away until you get to know your partner. It's not too late though. Get a divorce. Nothing mandates you suffer the rest of your life like this. My advice is to write down all the abuses she has committed and gather any proof you have of such. Then contact a good lawyer and ask his advice on what to do. Don't go cheap with the lawyer because you may end up paying for it later. Also, since you lent her a million Naira for her shop, that shop becomes a part of your joint marital property. In the case of divorce if you ask the court to divide the property, include her business in it and your loan of 1.6 million. |

In response to MURICS statement I actually counted the number of Christian and Muslim and secular holidays that Nigeria gives 1) New years day -Not a religious or christian day. Simply a say off on the first day of the new year. Is a holiday in every country including most Muslim countries 2) Good Friday- Christian holiday 3) Easter Monday - Christian holiday 4) Workers day - Secular holiday 5) Eid al Fitri- Muslim holiday 6) Id al Kabir- Muslim holiday 7) Independence day - Secular holiday  Sambisa memorial day - Secular holiday9) Christmas day - Christian holiday 10) Boxing day - Secular holiday (while sometimes associated with Christians it's just a day of rest and has nothing to do with christianity) So Christians have 3 and Muslims 2 holidays. Thus it's not as wildly unfair or unjust as MURIC claims. Maybe give Muslims one more holiday of their choice and then it is perfectly fair. 1 Like |

10 seats is a lot of lost revenue. From the size seen in the pictures I'd guess it's more than 10. Maybe as many as 15 seats. No airline can lose 15 seats of revenue and make money. Fuel costs a lot and they can't charge extra for the airlines since rich Muslims either have their own jets or travel in first and business class with plenty of room to pray. This airline is probably bailed out by the government. For those saying they wish Nigeria could do this, Saudi is a rich country that can afford lost revenues. Nigeria is poor and getting poorer still because people keep having babies. Also Saudi is a Muslim country while Nigeria is not. |

Nairalanders, what do you think Nigeria needs to actually progress? In my opinion it's these three things 1)Education -Real Education with critical thinking and rational skills, especially in the north. Uneducated people are easy to control and away. 2) Industrial growth and Agricultural reform- Industry and Agricultural reform can lift many out of poverty 3) Government support for entrepreneurship- Encouraging Nigerian businesses, trade and entrepreneurship can go a long way to improving the economy I think if these three are taken care of Nigeria will progress. I don't think corruption should be the focus because like it or not corruption exists and is very difficult to get rid of because there is a lack of will. If people get educated corruption will automatically decline. |

Honestly? Nigeria needs an expansion of its textiles sector. We have a huge youthful population that enjoys the latest fashions in addition to demand for ropes, carpets etc. Nigeria also has the right kind of soil for growing cotton and increased investment in cotton farming can help revitalize our shrunken agriculture industry and make farming an attractive profession again thus helping the unemployed youth. We currently import most of our textiles where we once had thriving textile mills. Textiles are also the cheapest and easiest to set up Industry. If we are able to successfully grow cotton at home and set up competitive and efficient textile mills we can not only clothe our own population and stimulate the gdp while lowing imports but we can also export to the American continent which currently imports textiles from the further away Asia. |

Babzrockman:I disagree for the simple reason that in 1990 India was a closed off country and in 1970 China was a closed off country. One following Socialism and the other Communism. Nigeria meanwhile has been open to foreign investment and capital and follows a mixed market economic system. When India and China opened up their economies the populations were dirt poor, there was massive scope for investment and growth and a lack of developed robust systems. Opening the economy allowed foreign investment to come pouring in and new businesses started cropping up. The people grew richer and the gap grew as a natural result. The real gdp growth of China happened in the 90s and of India is happening now after the basic effect of opening up the country faded. Currently Ethiopia is one of the fastest growing economies in the world because they are going through this phase. Nigeria has gone through this phase already and our power shortages, bureaucratic inefficiency, corruption and lack of economic will has caused us to stagnate instead of experiencing the kind of growth other countries are achieving. Our population is growing at a much faster rate than our economy and we cannot harness our youth potential since we lack industrial capabilities. We have natural resources but need the income from these to just prop up the country not to mention the massive reserves that are stolen each year. Nigeria's high poverty rate won't just fade away. We need actual economic policies that allow for our poverty to reduce. Economic policies that aim at improving industry and creating actual sectors that we dominate. 1 Like |

To muslim Nairalanders and to non muslims as well, being relatively new to Nairaland, Why can I see Islamic threads but not comment on them without taking the shahada? Is it because a lot of trolls derail the conversation? This requirement prevents me and others from participating in constructive conversation while trolls will just recite a fake shahada and continue trolling anyway. Also if such a condition exists for Islamic threads, should not a similar condition exist for christian ones? Or do they get trolled on less? Sorry for the question if it has been asked previously and I appreciate any input. I am neutral and do not favor christians or muslims. |

Africa has tourism potential. This is a fact that hasn't been lost on anyone that has seen the massive diversity of offerings the continent has. While political instability, economic misalignment and generally shitty policies have kept tourists away, the countries that have fixed these issues such as Morocco, South Africa and Tunisia and off late Kenya and Tanzania, have seen massive boosts in tourism. The simple thing is that people with money want to travel and they grow bored of visiting the same old places. Morocco and Tunisia have promoted their rich culture, their unique position in Africa as Afro-Arab countries, their heritage and their plethora of exciting events since the 1960's. As a result they are extremely popular tourism destinations and draw millions of visitors each year. Tunisia hosts several music festivals that boost its popularity. South Africa already had a lot of stunning dutch culture, a blend of Europe and Africa, amazing nature and a host of fun activities such as wine tasting, sky diving, safari's etc. They especially leveraged these offerings during the world cup they hosted and as such have become Africa's second largest tourism destination. More recently Kenya, Mozambique, Tanzania and even Uganda have taken advantage of their gorgeous nature and wildlife diversity and have heavily marketed themselves as Eco tourism destinations. Mozambique, blessed with a long coast has leveraged its amazing beaches to attract tourists. However, West Africa, with the exception of Ghana has not been very successful at attracting tourists. While Morocco received 10 million tourists last year, South Africa received 8 million and Mozambique received 1.5 million, Nigeria only received 1.2 million tourists. Moreover, while Nigeria received more tourists than Kenya at 1.1 million or Ghana at 897,000, most of the tourists in Nigeria are those Nigerians that moved abroad and are visiting family in Nigeria. They thus tend to spend less than travelling tourists and is why Kenya and Ghana made twice as much tourism revenue as did Nigeria. In my opinion Nigeria and West Africa in general has too many issues including security concerns, bad infrastructure and political issues for any one west African country to become a tourism powerhouse. Even Ghana, despite its position as the most stable West African country has been unable to attract many tourists. However, what West Africa can do is harness its unique position to create a tourism corridor. East has amazing nature and a still tribal people and North has Arab culture. However, we in the west, have amazing food, great music, a ton of different ethnic groups and a friendly and welcoming people. We can leverage this to create a West Africa party corridor. We can have agreements with our neighbors whereby tourists can fly into any West African country (or start from any West African country for domestic tourists) and travel up or down the corridor that links the most attractive cities in each country and they can do so visa free. We build good roads linking these cities and provide a low cost bus or rail service. The tourists can experience partying in Lagos, beaches in Ghana, Voodoo in Benin, weed in Sierra Leon, francophone culture in Senegal, architecture in Coat d Ivore and mountains and waterfalls in Guinea. All along the way they can meet and interact with people from diverse ethnic groups and tribes and they can get a true West African experience. Anyway, these are my thoughts. Honestly, more Nigerians migrating to the U.S. isn't that bad for the African Americans. They should do it legally and it may be bad for Nigeria but for African Americans their numbers are declining as a % of the population and with that loss comes a loss of power and the ability to affect change. This is a bad thing given the fact that they're the most impoverished ethnic group in the country and the most discriminated against. Migration from Africa can help bolster their numbers in the face of the massive Asian and Latino Migration. 1 Like |

Even though I'm a born again Christian, incidence like these are inevitable since christianity has been turned to a religion of mockery by the hypocrisy of we Christians who refuse to call a spade, a spade. Pastors have been elevated to Demi-god and their gullible followers believe they can never do wrong. We Christians are quick to defend irresponsible elements parading as pastors and bishops with "Touch not my annointed and do my Prophet no harm" but we hypocritically judge others especially of separate religious beliefs. These pulpits fraudsters we call pastors exploits the gullibility of we Christians by threatening us with Hell fire and instilling fears in their congregation to maximize financial returns. No wonder we have more churches than schools and factories all over the country since selling the name of Jesus is the most profitable lazy way of making money.
