Incorrect: "She's pregnant for him".

This is a very good example of Nigerianism. We're all culpable. Our journalists are also culpable.

This can be traced to our "masculine" culture [let me use Hofstede's framework (in terms of roles) to explain this]. Is the woman an outsider to the whole activity (from copulation, that is)? The fact is our culture supports this weird notion that the child belongs to the FATHER.

Is she a surrogate mother? If NO, then, why "for him"? Does that mean after delivery she's not a stakeholder?

I have done some work on this and "for him" is definitely wrong!

"By him" is correct.

"From him" is correct. But, I don't think it's formal.

What do you think, NLanders?

@Ragdoll, Are you kidding yourself by saying Somali chics are running after Nigerian men, You must be an error in your judgement because I assure you our women despise you and would rather spot on your face unbeknowns to them that you are somewhat "human" and not what she really perceived you to be, a gorrila that scaped from the London zoo, Furthermore, What did Nigeria accomplish?, Given us African the must embarrassing image in these western countries by their pathetic scheme and scam called 419(or whatever it is called), One time their was this program on American channel called "How to catch a Nigerican Scam artist", where I saw with my own eye a grown Nigerian man being chased in the city of London, Then you have all your ruthless corruption, Do you know how many times you guys have came last at the worlds rankings of most transparent countries? Believe it or not 14 consecutive times, So what do you have against Somalis, And what trends and culture have you set with your starving corrupted country, I know nothing of Nigerian contribution to the wider world except absolute barbaric behavior, You people are known to be natural thieves, There is a joke amongst Africans that if you see a Nigerian at the airport you should not be near him/her because it is a human fraud to begin with and they can somehow plant some contraband in your suitcase, So man get a grip of your stature as a Nigerian, your nothing but a disaster, Maybe if you visit my blog you will learn one or two about my blog, myhajj..com
Elyas:
@tpiah, Ill just stop, Why do you I enjoy insulting Nigerians? , I dont know, But in anyrate, I am calling for a ceasefire, Its time for me to send money to my cousins back in Somalia, They need to buy AKs for our little adventure into the indian ocean, Hey Nigerians, lets stop the insults, I leave your people alone and leave my people alone, In anyrate, In Nigerian lady interested in Somali man?, Add my on my facebook, Elyas Sharmarke or siklykorupt@gmail.com

EducationRe: Seun, Please Educate Nairalanders On How To Use Question Mark (?) by Phate07(m): 6:22pm On Apr 06, 2011
Cant remember my origanal ID's Password hence i had to post with this

Its so annoying that alot of People that 'claims' to be educated still make unwarranted mistakes with the use of the Question mark (?)

Obviously, the role of the question mark is to end a question. The question mark immediately follows the question, even when one question interrupts or comes after a statement.

question marks are used for different reasons part of which is for indicating queries

1. Use the question mark when posing a direct query in an interrogative sentence. This denotes that the speaker is seeking information.
Are there any letters for me this morning?
When did you finish writing that report?

2. Use the question mark after a direct question which is inserted into a statement. If the question comes at the end, separate it with a comma. Capitalization of the question after the comma is used for extreme emphasis but is rarely recommended.
Her boss wondered, Was she really doing her job the best she could?

But what do we see on NL? people using it when they aren't supposed to.

Imagine on this thread https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-638982.0.html#msg8059550

and see the response she got from someone well informed about its usage

Some times our very own supermods makes same error on the Home page.

Picture Of Jide Kosoko In Street Fight? (on the homepage)

Pls we use question mark at the end of sentences that are make enquiries or asking questions

See more examples

3. If the inserted question comes in the beginning, put the question mark in the middle but do not capitalize the word following it.
Was she really doing her job the best she could? Her boss wondered.
Was she really doing the best she could? was the question.

Using question marks for indicating rhetorical question

Check this out!
Aren't his paintings amazing? [Interested or surprised reaction]
Aren't his paintings amazing. [Uninterested or musing reaction]
Aren't his paintings amazing! [Indignant or exciting reaction]

When not to use the question mark

1. Do not use a question mark in statements that contain indirect questions (written as declarative sentences).
No: Her boss wondered whether she was really doing her job the best she could?
Yes: Her boss wondered whether she was really doing her job the best she could.

2 Do not use (?) to express irony or sarcasm in serious academic writing.
Most people find office filing a pleasant (?) assignment. or
Most people find office filing as pleasant as having a bad case of the flu.

3 Do not use a comma after a question mark occurring in the middle of a sentence.
"You didn't actually agree to that offer?" her boss asked incredulously.

4. Do not use a period after a question mark occurring in the end of a sentence, even if followed by quotation marks.

Did you actually take that offer?
