THE Rivers State Governor and Chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, said on Wednesday that corruption would disappear from Nigeria if the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), emerged the winner of the February 14 presidential election.www.punchng.com/news/corruptionll-disappear-if-buhari-wins-says-amaechi/ |
The scorching sun was not a barrier to the thousands of supporters of the president who thronged the venue to hear and express solidarity with the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP presidential candidate. By Boluwaji Obahopo Earlier insinuations that Kogi State would be an easy ride for the All Progressives Congress, APC candidate, Muhammadu Buhari given the hitherto universal chorus of Sai Buhari was almost deafened by the show of love for the president last Tuesday. As earlier as 8am, the atmosphere in the city had changed. Artisans, students and others from different walks of life poured out to the Confluence Stadium where the presidential rally was scheduled to take place. From the Ganaja junctions, down to Phase 1 and Phase 11 leading to Zone 8, the streets were packed full and vehicular movement was turned into a snarl. Many had to trek and some as long as four kilometres to the venue. By 12 noon when President Jonathan arrived with his entourage the stadium was near full. Once the rally got underway a number of party stakeholders took turns to advance reasons why Dr. Jonathan should be returned to power. Ethnic bigotry Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan Among those who spoke that day were the director-general of the Jonathan campaign, Col. Ahmadu Ali (rtd.) who incidentally is from the state, the president of the Senate, Senator David Mark, Senator Smart Adeyemi, PDP women leader, Halima Alfa, the national chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Mu`azu, Governor Idris Wada among others. Ali said that both Jonathan and Buhari had been both presidents before but that Buhari was so bad as a leader that his colleagues removed him from office. “Only those that are blind with ethnic bigotry and political compatriots who have placed their personal interest above the interest of the country are backing Buhari to become president of this country that is why you see them moving from one party to another,” Ali said. Mark on his part was to assert that the president would win all the North Central States on account of his good works in the region. One remarkable backer of the president who moved the crowd was Senator Adeyemi. Adeyemi, who has been praised for his deliverables by constituents some of who helped to purchase his return ticket was himself effusive of the achievements of the president even as he noted the constraints posed by the insurgents. Senator Adeyemi also take a swipe at the opposition saying they have overcharged the political atmosphere with falsehood, “It is unfortunate that those who at the beginning fought for the entrenchment of democracy are those now spreading falsehood just in the interest of taking power by false. “But let me say it here that Jonathan is coming back. His visit to the State is just formality. The people of the State have decided that with the unprecedented performance of the President, he cannot be change for the uncertainty.” Mu`azu in his remarks praised the president for allowing the reign of liberty in the country observing that “there is no politician on exile in the country. No politician or any other person has been imprisoned or is in detention for speaking his mind. There is freedom of expression. Such freedom has never been experienced before,” Mu`azu said. In his response, President Jonathan said he has fulfilled his electioneering promises to Nigeria and ready to do more if elected for a second term. “I have fulfilled my electioneering promises to the country. One of such promises is the Ajaokuta Steel Company, which we first started with by putting in a vibrant management team. “It is my joy that through the help of the attorney general, Mohammed Adoke; who also is a son of the state; all the legal problems associated with the company are now over. Pioneering works In a short while, we will be inviting investors to come and partner with us to commence full operation in the company. I also have it on good authority that three countries have signified interest in it.“ The president also used the opportunity to praise the pioneering works of one of the founding fathers of the PDP, the late Chief Sunday Awoniyi, who he noted was a man of character and convictions. The president noted how he has been able to increase the length of motorable road in the country saying he inherited only 5,000 kilometres of motorable road and increased same to 30,000 kilometres. “Our government is a government of the youth. We have kept our word. Politicians always say so much and do little, but ours (Jonathan/Sambo) has been different. We have kept our word and fulfilled our promises. We only seek to do more if elected”. The rally was brought to an end with prayers offered by the deputy governor of the state, Arc. Yomi Awoniyi. www.vanguardngr.com/2015/02/jonathan-search-continuity-confluence-state/ |

A total of 3,600 foreign soldiers from Nigeria’s francophone neigbours have been deployed to work alongside the Nigerian component of the Multi National Joint Task Force to fight the members of the Boko Haram Islamic sect. Investigation conducted by our correspondent revealed that Chad with 2, 500 soldiers contributed the largest number of troops to the new offensive against the sect. The other countries, Niger and Cameroon are contributing 700 and 400 troops respectively to the joint campaigns against the insurgents. It was also learnt that the MNJTF had started massive air strikes and ground offensives against the insurgents. Though it was reported that nine Chadian soldiers were killed in the battle to root out the Boko Haram fighters from Gamboru Ngala on Tuesday, the sect also lost about 200 soldiers. Reports on Chadian state television confirmed that the soldiers killed 200 Boko Haram fighters and lost nine troops in the encounters in the two border communities north of Maiduguri. The Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade, declined to comment on the casualties suffered by the Chadian forces in the reported offensive against the insurgents at Gamboru Ngala. Olukolade also declined comments on the number of troops contributed by other countries in the joint operation. However, Olukolade confirmed that a total of 2,500 Chadian soldiers were deployed for the joint operation. He said that the 2,500 soldiers comprised those that would watch over the Chadian end of the border and those that would be involved in the missions. He said, “I cannot speak on the casualties being claimed. However, as to the figure, 2,500 represents the total number the Chadian Forces are expected to deploy. “These include those who will keep watch at their own country’s side of the border as well as those who will be involved in the joint patrols and operations and campaigns,” he said in a text message to our correspondent www.punchng.com/news/nigeria-chad-others-launch-joint-operation-against-bharam/ |

my earlier article stated that the minimum forex reserves should have been at least $90 billion by now and you did not challenge it. Rather it is about $30 billion, meaning that gross mismanagement has denied the country some $60 billion or another N12.6 trillion. Now add the ‘missing’ $20 billion from the NNPC. You promised a forensic audit report ‘soon’, and more than a year later the Report itself is still ‘missing’. This is over N4 trillion, and we don’t know how much more has ‘missed’ since Sanusi cried out. How many trillions of naira were paid for oil subsidy (unappropriated?). How many trillions (in actual fact) have been ‘lost’ through customs duty waivers over the last four years? As coordinator of the economy, can you tell Nigerians why the price of automotive gas oil (AGO), popularly called diesel, has still not come down despite the crash in global crude oil prices, and how much is being appropriated by friends in the process? Be honest: do you really know (as coordinator and minister of finance) how many trillions of Naira, self- financing government agencies earn and spend? I have a long list but let me wait for now. I do not want to talk about other ‘black pots’ that impinge on national security. My estimate, Madam, is that probably more than N30 trillion has either been stolen or lost or unaccounted for or simply mismanaged under your watchful eyes in the past four years. Since you claim to be in charge, Nigerians are right to ask you to account. Think about what this amount could mean for the 112 million poor Nigerians or for our schools, hospitals, roads, etc. Soon, you will start asking the citizens to pay this or that tax, while some faceless “thieves” were pocketing over $40 million per day from oil alone. You alluded to debt relief in your response and tried to take credit. Well, your CV is honest enough to admit that your two achievements in office as Finance minister under Obasanjo were that “you led the Nigerian team that struck a deal with the Paris Club” and that you “introduced the practice of publishing each state’s monthly financial allocation in the newspapers”. You are right about the two achievements. Let me put on record that Nigeria would have secured debt relief under anyone as Minister of Finance. President Obasanjo secured debt relief for Nigeria. Much of his first term was used to get Nigeria back into the international community and to campaign for debt relief. Before you were sworn in as Minister of Finance, President Bush visited Nigeria and both of us accompanied President Obasanjo during the meeting. There, Mr. Bush promised to support Nigeria with debt relief and asked our president to ensure that he met the conditions of the Paris Club. Obasanjo mobilized the global political support and coordinated all of us We had a great team at work and each member of the economic team had specific aspects of the conditionalities to deliver: Bode Agusto was in-charge of the budget; Oby Ezekwesili held sway at Bureau of Public Procurement and later Minister of Solid Mineral, and Education (but specifically tasked with delivering on EITI and procurement reforms); Nuhu Ribadu was at the EFCC fighting corruption; I was at the Central Bank delivering on monetary policy and banking reforms; Steve Oronsaye worked hard to delist Nigeria from the FATF; Nenadi Usman was in-charge of the parastatals; El-Rufai held forth at FCT and in charge of public sector reforms; privatization programme went on, etc. Did you know that the IMF wrote President Obasanjo threatening that there would be no debt relief if the CBN did not meet some monetary targets, and do you know the magic we performed to meet them? Can you tell Nigerians which of the ‘conditionalities’ that you personally implemented? With the groundswell of political support and Nigeria meeting all the ‘conditionalities’, debt relief was assured. Your major role as stated in your CV was to lead the team to negotiate the specific terms of the relief, having fulfilled the conditions. I still believe that Nigeria should have gotten far better terms than you negotiated. Of course, with your eyes on returning to the World Bank after office, I did not expect you to boldly stand up to the donor community in defence of Nigeria. Was there a conflict of interest on your part? By the way, can you tell Nigerians why you were eased out as Finance Minister and you cried like a baby begging OBJ to still allow you remain in the Economic Management team — barely few weeks after the debt relief? Why were you eventually also removed from the economic management team if you were so important? Ironically, President Jonathan has recycled you, with a bigger title and greater responsibilities. But the difference is that the team that did the actual work is no longer there, and the world has seen that the king is naked. You are brilliant Madam, but you need serious help www.punchng.com/news/discourse/ngozi-okonjo-iweala-and-the-missing-trillions-1-3/ |

A Federal High Court in Abuja again on Tuesday ordered the service of court papers on the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), in another suit filed to disqualify him from contesting in the February 14 election. Justice Adeniyi Ademola had on Monday heard a similar case and ordered that Buhari and the Independent National Electoral Commission be served through substituted means by publication in newspapers. On Tuesday, the judge again granted an ex-parte application seeking the same prayer in a separate suit seeking to disqualify Buhari from participating in the poll over his failure to attach his certificate of academic qualification to his form submitted to INEC. INEC is also a defendant in the fresh suit numbered FHC/ABJ/CS/01/2015 and filed by Chukwunweike Okafor. It is to come up for hearing on February 9. The plaintiff in the case which came up for hearing on Monday was Max Ozoaka Okafor. The plaintiffs are, in their different suits, contending that the INEC FORM CF 001 submitted to INEC by the APC candidate was incomplete and therefore urged the court to declare the form as incompetent. They further stated that the failure of Buhari to accompany the INEC form with evidence of his educational qualifications and evidence of his birth certificate or affidavit of declaration of age had altogether rendered the form inchoate. Ozoaka, in a supporting affidavit to the originating summons, stated that the INEC form submitted by Buhari did not meet the requirements of sections 31(1)(2) & (3), and 31( of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended). He also faulted some pieces of information contained in other documents attached to the form, including Buhari’s voter card which described the presidential candidate as a public servant. The plaintiff urged the court to declare that the the voter card, the photocopy of which was attached to INEC Form CF 001, was false on the grounds that Buhari was not a public servant as of when the voter card was issued www.punchng.com/news/court-orders-service-of-papers-in-fresh-anti-buhari-suit/ |
The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, President Goodluck Jonathan, has said that he has fulfilled all the promises he made during his inauguration speech in 2011. He also said the Federal Government would soon come up with an automobile policy that would ensure that vehicles would be assembled in Nigeria. He added that the Federal Government would mandate vehicle assembly plants in the country to source 65 per cent of their raw materials within the country to boost industrialisation, employment generation and economic development. Jonathan spoke in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, during the PDP presidential campaign rally. The President also said if re-elected, his administration would show greater commitment to sectors that were critical to Nigeria’s economy. He reiterated his commitment to addressing insurgency, corruption and other developmental challenges of the country. He said the Federal Government was committed to reactivating the Ajaokuta Steel Company in Kogi State to full production capacity so that more jobs would be available to the jobless people and also to boost the economy of Nigeria and that of Kogi State. According to him, all the legal tussles surrounding the ailing Ajaokuta Steel Company had been resolved. He appealed to the electorate in the state to vote him for another term. He claimed that he had fulfilled all the promises he made during his inauguration speech in 2011. Jonathan said, “The legal process of Ajaokuta Steel Company has been completed. Investors can now come in and harness the opportunities that abound in the iron ore company. “We are coming up with automobile policy where vehicles will be assembled in the country. With that, Ajaokuta Steel Company will be empowered to produce iron sheets.” The Vice-President, Namadi Sambo said the Federal Government under Jonathan had transformed Nigeria.www.punchng.com/news/ive-fulfilled-all-my-promises-jonathan/ |
The Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Tuesday said any public official who betrayed the trust of Nigerians and illegally enriched himself under his administration would be made to face the full wrath of the law. He promised Nigerians that there would be no hiding place for corrupt elected officials, including governors and all other government officials in his administration. Buhari gave the assurance at the presidential rally held at the Pantami International Stadium, Gombe. He said, “We must do away with corruption as well as develop the Nigerian economy, if we are elected into office by the grace of God, any elected official that is elected or appointed to serve under me must be transparent, because if any of them embezzles public funds, he will face the consequences.” The presidential hopeful also promised to boost electricity supply in all parts of the country. He also pledged to revive moribund industries in order to address unemployment. “Our youths are suffering and walking round the streets without employment but we will strive to make them gainfully employed, so as to disengage them from vices that can destroy their future,” Buhari stated. The APC presidential candidate said he would also look into ways of collaborating with advanced countries to revamp the agricultural sector. He said schools would also be given a facelift and qualified teachers would be recruited. Also speaking at the rally, the National Chairman of the party, John Odigie-Oyegun, called on the Nigerian public to vote massively for the APC in the forthcoming elections to guarantee progress and development. He urged all party faithful to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards so as to have the opportunity to elect candidates of their choice. The party’s leader in Gombe State, Senator Danjuma Goje, described Buhari as the architect of change. He urged all supporters of the party to vote out the Peoples Democratic Party by turning out in large number on election days and also defend their votes by ensuring that the votes were counted in their presence. The governorship candidate of the party in the state, Alhaji Inuwa Yahaya, expressed optimism that the APC would win elections in Gombe State come February 14 and 28. The Gombe APC Presidential rally, which was the 34th in the series, was well attended and it ended peacefully www.punchng.com/news/my-govtll-punish-corrupt-officials-buhari-insists/ |
