Sagamite: It just happens that NONE of the things you listed is an appropriate definition of being mentally unsettled.

Mentally unsettled means the mental questioning of one's completeness. Not whether you cross the road with you left leg first or how many Indonesian friends you have.

Surely if you grew up in a single parent home, you would miss the presence and feel of a father figure. You will question who your father is and why he is not there (if he is unfortunately late and/or not present in your upbringing). You will wish you lived under two parents when you are constantly bombarded with images of a wholesome family by the media through adverts, your favourite shows, your academic studies of family formations etc.

You would question if your father loved/loves you and wonder what life would be like if he was there to guide and mentor you. Worse when you hear your friends talk about their fathers, not just their mothers. Or when you see them interact with their dads and the men are doing their best to make their child's life easy or are guide them in life. Or when you see they have 2 alternate shoulders to fall on and you have only one (that might not always be available due to life's challenges, even though she wants to be available everytime).

You would feel just slightly down everytime you have to explain a father is not in your life to inquisitive acquintances.

Those are what I meant by mentally unsettled or things that lead to it. The frequent, maybe transient, questioning of completeness. It is not, and does not have to be, a violent or bombastic unsettlement that requires the NHS to prescribe pills. It is just that pins and needles, that draft under the door frames, that missing piece in a giant puzzle at the back of your mind.

Some handle it well, some don't. That is why stats normally show that children from single parenthood have more tendencies to be on the wrong side of the law, to be teenage mothers, to be less successful academically etc. Not all, but it increases susceptibility drastically. So having two parents would have made a difference to majority of them.
these things you mentioned are real but do they really worth the life of an unborn child? Should we kill a person in order to save him from severe mental agony? I think not.

Sagamite: You need to go back and read the thread before you start contributing.

No one condemned single parenthood to non-existence.

People are condeming the relaxation of attitude to teenage prenancy.

A carrot is not a police baton.
You got me wrong there, what I mean is that condemning the unborn child to non existence isn't right. Am among the people that are condemning the relaxation of attitude to teenage pregnancy but when it occures abortion must not be our ONLY remedy.

Sagamite: I am pretty much sure no one has said children from single parent can't succeed.

When I see silly analogies it just gets under my skin.

90% of almajiris are on the streets because of a mixture of extreme poverty mixed with a reetarded culture mixed with fanatic religion mixed with lack of family planning mixed with extreme ignorance.

I don't know how that is representative of or a reflection of having two parents.

What next? You will point to a child with 2 parents that grew up in a refugee camp where he has no citizenship rights and no access to self-development as a reference to justify single-parenthood?

Please bring sane analogies.

Most of these Almajiri kids would have been better of not being born considering the life they are made to live. I would support mass abortions in Northern Nigeria where someone that earns less than $1 a day wants to have 12 kids and leave it to Allah to raise them. Nigeria itself would be so much better off for it as you would not have animals who are ready to take another person's life at the slightest sense of provocation.

You mean the kids in the West were abandoned by their parents and grandparents?

They do not get support from the public purse?

How come they are more likely to end up being social menace despite the support they get in these countries?

Cut the crap argument.

A child is mentally unsettled when a parent is missing from their life or is not there day-to-day. More so if that parent did not die. All evidence of research of child behaviours suggest this. A sane society would do its best to avoid such an outcome.
I have no argument that there are Psychological effects a child born to a single parent could have but banking on those "singular" side effect to condemn them to none existence in other to make our society sane will amount to "robbing Peter to pay Paul". If these effects are too weighty to you then we can as well conclude that children who lost their mothers at birth will be a torn to the society. My take once again is that there are limited cases or situations where abortion could sound mild but certainly not in this case of giving the mother a "happy ending".

Family › Re: Our Attitude Towards Teenage Pregnancy by PHIPEX(m): 6:00pm On Jun 08, 2012
I will be the last person to agree that children from single parent can't succeed. I hate teenage pregnancy with a passion but will not condone abortion. 90% of the almajiris on our street were born to families with "two parents" living together how are they now better than children born to single parents? If we go by the logic that any child that we percieve to have limited chance of succeeding should be killed/flushed then children born to parents who are in abject poverty should not have been allowed to live. I believe that why children born to single parents experience difficult challenges is because their parents/grandparents abandoned them to their fate in other to avoid "the shame" that comes with teenage pregnancy. My solution to this whole mess is to avoid whatever brings teenage pregnancy but if it occures, the adults around such girls should help to ease the "pain" that may result from it. Nobody has a right to deny a child his/her right to life on the flimsy excuse of avoiding social miscreants. Even if our constitution is ammended tomorrow to say that abortion is now legal, it will not stop it from being a crime in the sight of the God who creates life.
Family › Re: Our Attitude Towards Teenage Pregnancy by PHIPEX(m): 11:13pm On Jun 07, 2012
Several reports on Nigerian teenagers has it that 50% of Nigerian teenage girls have been pregnant atleast once by the age of 20. If those reports are true then we have a greater problem on our hands.
1. What did they do to those pregenancies?
2. How are they sure they are HIV free because its only someone who had an unprotected sex that can get pregenant?
3. what can be done to checkmate the rise in promiscuity among the youths of today?

As for me, any girl who is bold enough to get pregnant should be bold enough to carry her baby, I can't soak my hands in blood in other to save someone else from shame.

Some Nigerians are very myopic, Let's assume Buhari gets into power in 2015, where will the shooting and killing start? From those who misruled in the 70s and 80s or from the criminals of the current dispensation? Will it be right to kill the new generation criminals while the old crooks go free? Another terrible thing is that when more southerners are killed we will cry ethnic cleancing and I as a Nigerian can't imagine Buhari killing more Northerners than Southerners. Who even determines who should die and who should live, is it Buhari or this same corrupt Judiciary we have. If Buhari wants the well being of Nigeria, he should say something that is feasible under a democratic dispensation and by the way, how many corrupt politician did he kill when he was the president?

So much has been said here but as long as each of us refuses to do Right when we come under pressure, the Status-quo shall remain...as for me, I don't need any govt or police to do what is right. If the 4340 people that have viewed this topic so far chose to do right not minding whether the govt is corrupt or not then there may truelly be hope for Nigeria because the govt officials makeup less than 1% of our population.

One of the reasons could be that the Buhari that beat up journalists on the ground of indiscipline would'v shutdown Nairaland long ago for nasty comments and possibly lockup Seun for publishing treasonable comments against his govt.

What goes around truely comes around, am not happy about this change of a great name like Unilag because even the Bible says that a good name is worth more than riches but I remember that some persons on NL were asking for the change of UNN to Ikemba Ojukwu when the NA was asked to immortalise him. Beware of what you wish for others because you may have it first. The beautiful word "Unilag" is hereby deleted from the global dictionary but other Universities in the north should take note because Umaru Yaradua University maybe given birth to by the next administration.
Politics › Re: Happy Democracy Day! by PHIPEX(m): 9:43am On May 29, 2012
Weldone Naptu, some of us here on NL were too young to grasp the enormity of the atrocities of the Military era so we tend to judge our Democracy simply by the happennings of today in relation to the events in other countries without taking a critical overview of where we were coming from. Some Nairalanders who were old enough to tell the tale have fallen victims of the cliche "the good old days". The democratic practice in Nigeria is far from what every rational citizen hoped for but it is still far better than any miitary regime that occupied that seat of power before it. The journey to our emancipation is looking farther than we envisaged but there is no doubt that we have covered a great distance.

Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!
God Bless Nigeria!!
Happy Democracy day!!!

Did you say hypocrite? It probably shows the degree of ur ignorance, did u read anywhere that Boko Haram bombed a mosque in Sapele? What happened at Sapele was a reprisal attacked by some persons who wanted to respond to BH fire for fire. Am still waiting to hear of a Mosque that was destroyed by Boko Haram.
Politics › Re: Boko Haram Is Jihad On Christians - Rev Akinola by PHIPEX(m): 9:17pm On May 28, 2012
I'v been hearing some people mention that BH kill Moslems to but we can all recollect that the statement BH issue after they attacked Kano the first time was that they will attack any Moslem who stand on their way or supports the Christians and as far as I can recollect there has been only One case of a bomb blast NEAR a mosque in Maiduguri late December last year, Till date no single Mosque has been destroyed by Boko Haram yet since they started their crusade, over 200 churches has been affected.

Most moslems rejoice whenever someone comes out to say the BH is a political creation but what I know is that even if it has an element of politics, Its sponsors are Moslems, its soldiers are Moslems and their attackes are directed at Christians but some Moslems die in the process as a collateral damage. The few Immams that were killed were those that dared to speak against them.
Kudos to the Rev for telling the World what is already known at a time when his fellow Clergymen are afraid of saying the obvious for the fear of their lives and political favours.

People become Chartered in various professional bodies without stepping into a lecture hall so I don't see any difference between online degree and professional certification.

Charley boy is not just steering any controversy he's just overtly bringing out what has been covertly out there for a long period of time. No wonder they see themselves as Jews of Africa, that might be true, because Jews started these gay activities and passes it to pope in Rome. That's why Ibo people held people in high esteem, he puts their heads under his thing so that they can lick from his sugerlicious chemical. Iboland, despite been just only 25,000km squares out of Nigerian's 912,000 km squares, I still see it as Sodom and gomorrah of Africa (sodomizes and gaymorales litter Iboland).

ow11: As usual, common sense has left the window under the clouds of 'chop but do something'. Nobody is questioning the N4.5b 'investment' in roads + refinery by the ANSG in this project that OPR seems to have gotten covered.

Nice project and good vision by the executive board of the company (sitting on 1 billion barrels in place of oil - potentially recovering 350 million barrels can serve that refinery for up to 17 years). The nicer gist is the gas reserves.

Can someone put out where it is written boldly outside the original article that Anambra state partly owns this refinery?
The economy of Awka city revolves primarily around government since many state and federal institutions are located there. Awka hosts the State Governor's Lodge, State Assembly and State Ministries for Health, Education, Lands, Water.

The Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) a TV and radio station are located in the city center. A number of federal institutions including the Central Bank of Nigeria (which has a currency center in Awka), the NTA Awka media station, and branches of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Federal Road Safety Commission, Nigerian Immigration Service, and Corporate Affairs Commission are also present in the city.

In recent years, several new businesses have erected fascinating new buildings that have largely changed the face of Awka city. The partly state-owned Orient Petroleum Resources Ltd has the headquarters in Awka. The company is poised to set up a refinery at Igbariam to jump-start the exploitation of the huge crude oil deposits in the Anambra River basin. Also Juhel Nigeria has constructed a manufacturing plant for Parenteral drugs in the city.

Major Nigerian Banks such as Access Bank, Bank PHB, Diamond Bank, Ecobank, First Bank, Intercontinental, Oceanic Bank, UBA, Union Bank and Zenith Bank have opened branches in the city.
