VO: good morning
Me: good morning
*I did the usual finger print and passed my doc*
VO: why are you going to the US
Me: I am going to the US to continue my PhD studies in Construction Engineering and mgt at UNL

VO: did you say continue?
Me: can u repeat yourself, I didn't get that.

VO: are you a returning student
Me: No, but I have began my program online.

VO: how did you get this scholarship?

Me: while searching for a school for my PhD, I came across a vacancy from my advisor on academickeys.com. I applied, and after a series of interview and assignments, I was told to apply.

VO: congratulations, I am going to be approving your visa...no document asked.

Thank you so so much @ fairheart for agreeing to do a series of mocks with me at no cost...you are gem. My discussions with you open my eyes to the grey areas or information I was leaving out

Waiting for same feedback too
Comique:
May I know if anyone has gotten a feedback, those of us scheduled for an emergency appointment for Nov 13, and later got an email to pick June 19, 2021 to fill an emergency appointment on the portal..

I did accordingly to the instructions in the mail and yet no feedback from them.

What can I do??
Travel / Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 15 by phizzle20: 12:04pm On Nov 06, 2020
Have you rescheduled or previously canceled this appointment. I got same mail and was able to click on the expedited tab and filled the form. If you have previously done something similar (reschedule or cancel), it may be the reason why.
Felizz:
I got this email too..i was told to schedule my appointment to June 19, 2021 and then request for expedited appointment so that my expedited appointment will move to nov 13.. Now I have schedule an appointment to June 19 2021.. But now there is no column to click for the request of an expedited appointment oooo.am just scared now

Good evening everyone and congrats to people that have been approved recently.

I have a small question. My appointment is in two weeks time but I have a little concern.

I put August 15th as my arrival date in my DS-160 form but due to COVID, I couldn't secure appointment. Now that I have an appointment and my program starts in-person classes for spring semester which makes my new arrival date to be in January. The question is do I have to change it on the DS-160??

Is it also true that schools have to update our sevis account for a new start date?? I really don't that part.

Please, if anyone has answers to these questions, kindly assist. Thanks
Yes...your sch have to update your sevis record

That's four year and 11 months... Which is more or less five year. I made similar mistake but I mails my sch and it as explained to me. Jan -Dec,2021,2022,2023,2024,2025...look at it this way
thedsl:
Hi guys. My I-20 shows program start and end dates to be January 2021 to December 2025 (PhD). That’s roughly 4 years. On my DS-160, can I fill in ‘4 years’ as my intended length of stay in US please?
Thank you

Please gurus in the house, I have an issue with my I20 shipment. It’s already in Lagos and I’m in Abuja but I got a mail from UPS today saying my package is experiencing delays because they’re awaiting payment authorization from the receiver. Has anyone encountered this kind of issue before and please how was it rectified?

I got similar mail before my I20 arrived. Go and track it on your page. I don't think it means anything except that it will take a longer time thst expected date. In my case, it was like 4-5 days more before u received the document

That will be for you to decide. Can you convince the VO why you an to go over there to do a PGD instead of an MSc
Micholo5:

Thanks.
Do you mean here in Nigeria?

Try to do a post graduate diploma in your discipline to boost your chances and grade

Except for ivy league schools, I do not think there is a direct correlation between your school and VISA interview/approval. Everyone will have their reason for sharing or not sharing their schools. What I expect such a curious person to do is ask which did the student applied to...what if the student just left out the name of the school because they felt it is not necessary (which I hold the same view). Rather than attack the person, just ask the question...if he or she answer fine...if not, move on
solihp:

Fairheart, I also disagree with you smiley , it's not about copying schools. I felt that way when I read the transcript too. The point of posting transcript is to help others now or in the future, so if you don't want to post transcript, just say your visa was approved, nobody will force you to post the transcript.

If you want to do something, do it well.

Hello all, is it compulsory to fill the question: have you made specific travel plans? In the DS160 form.
Or I should just provide an estimate?

Consider a google search as a good starting point. If you pick schools with GRE score of like 300-310 for example, that gives you a good chance to be selected since you have a higher score especially with your CGPA. There schs like UF, UA, LSU, UNL within this range...so it is your choice. Try to also speak with the faculties at the schs you eventually what to settle for.

Hello All,

I have B.tech in Applied Geology with 3.45 CGPA and a GRE scores of 323, still awaiting my analytical writing result tho coz I just did the GRE few days ago.

I had partial funding for Fall 2020 at NCA&T without GRE but since I deferred my admission to spring 2021 due to Covid, I’ve been emailing the grad coordinator to know whether the funding will still apply for spring 2021 but no response since.

Please which university can I apply to (Masters) that will guarantee full funding with my GRE scores? Or at least a university that is generous in their funding for masters student.

My course of interest is Industrial Engineering or Information Technology.

Seriously?

I wish I had a thread 4 times as long as this one many years ago when I was just launching out. You don't know the gold you have in hand.

Anyway, if you're a poor guy like I was years ago, then the first step to studying abroad would be to get a fairly competitive GPA. If however you're not poor, or better still if you have the financial means, then the first step would be to start searching for schools that have the course you want to study. In my experience, many schools in the UK will admit you today or tomorrow once you can cover your expenses.

But this thread is mostly US focused, hence you would normally need a GRE score plus your GPA plus letters and others to be able to study in the US. Many schools are cancelling GRE these days, but it's still a great idea to take it and 'wound' it if you're dreaming of getting a full scholarship (and this is not impossible, fellow Nigerians get full scholarships to US schools, plus the very top schools, every year).

If you're the high-achieving, ambitious type, with a very solid GPA, and you have plans to reach the end of formal education (read PhD), then I would suggest you, as I already wrote in a previous post, start befriending your lecturers, offering to work for them as a research assistant, write papers with them and get them invested in your growth and success. If all goes well, this move will get you extremely solid letters from them when the time comes. With these letters, research experience, possibly research articles, your GPA, and strong GRE, you can walk into many US PhD programs fully funded.

Ok, to make things more real, let's assume you want to do engineering, below, I give the profile of one girl who recently got into a US top 3 engineering, PhD...It will give you an idea of what to do and you can adapt to your own situation..

BSc engineering + solid GRE + 3 solid letters from naija profs + research experience with these profs + wonderful SOP + some luck= full scholarship in US top 3

So, in your case, although you didn't give much information, let's assume you have a CGPA of 4.3 in engineering and maintain this into graduation (or even increase it to like 4.4). If you get a GRE of, say, 165Q/155V/4.5, plus research experience, plus maybe some nontrivial articles and, importantly, have strong letters from 3 of your professors saying you're the next best discovery after slice bread, then it will be hard for you not to get into some very good or even top engineering departments in the US.

Anyway, I'm sure this gives a preliminary answer to your question. The bottom line is that it's indeed possible to study abroad, and on full scholarship too, if that is your target. Many Nigerians continue to achieve this every year. You too can do it. Just keep sourcing for information by taking time to read as much as you can. It's when you can't easily find something that you should ask questions. Not because threads are long.

In addition to the above, start learning programming especially if your from STEM disciplines. There are numerous free courses and tutorials online for your use.

I can’t wait to hear feedback on these online classes from Nigeria.

America is kuku not running away. Even here, sometimes it’s difficult to have a good class experience because Webex or Zoom is being used by everybody; your internet isn’t even the problem; it’s their capacity.

Not to discourage anyone; but if you can get funding from a school, they can also keep the funding for you until you’re able to attend, at the very least, know for sure that if one school thinks you’re good enough to be funded, more than a dozen school will fund you if you’d perform due diligence and apply to them.

Y’all should really not forget to share your online experience with us.

PS: If you think taking classes online increase your chances of getting a visa, you can’t be more wrong. They don’t care.

You can't be more wrong with your PS. It is can go both ways....for a masters and MBA students, it MAY do more harm than good. But for a PhD student, it can do more good than harm

I'll eventually have to ask my supervisor himself but I'd like to hear opinions please. I was admitted for a masters with a fellowship, including both tuition and living expenses. During my interview my supervisor made it clear, he wants "no work" for me for my first three quarters so I can focus on studying, and then contingent on my performance, I'll join him in research as an RA for my second year.

Now with these new rules and all, if I have to take classes in Nigeria do you think it's possible I get paid my fellowship stipend here? Since if I was in the US I wouldn't have to work either. I browsed through the department website and apparently cheques are paid to the address listed in my student portal every two weeks (if I was in the US). The only available fact I have now is that the President of the University assured all students who've been offered financial aid in any form that the University will honor their promises in spite of COVID-19. But there's no assurance of that with deferring and they'd have to check with the specific office that offered them aid if they defer.

So my question, has anybody here ever had this happen to them before? Or at least were in Nigeria receiving remote payment for work? What do I need to do to successfully receive the money *if* this is possible?

I really don't want to defer because I'm in it for the long haul, I expect to be at this school for the next 5 years because I'm pursuing a PhD, and would like to get the coursework out of the way as soon as possible. So I really want to know if I could get paid, because studying without any income is not possible for me, I'd have to get a job which would mean deferring.

I believe talking to your advisor is your best bet. He can push things for you if it is possible though. I had similar situation with Nebraska. My supervisor was willing to pay me but the school will not allow such. The option I have right now is to taking online courses( which is paid for by my supervisor) for the semester from Nigeria.

Boss are you too putting in for online classes for this FALL-SEMESTER 2020? But my fear is that how is it going to be because I need my GPA badly oooo and I don't want to be underperformed due to many factors like :
Bad network during the lecturers
No Light or NEPA take Light during the lecturer
Battery low and so on.
Hope you people get my points?

There is also the issue of time difference. Will you be able to cope taking lectures at odd hours of the day and night?
This is the main challenge for me.

Yeah.
Next available date I picked is Nov 11. The Visa officer(during their Facebook Q&A session on US Embassy Nigeria) advised to apply and pick the November date and anytime they start routine Visa service, those ones that have pick those dates will be emailed to ask if they will like to move their dates backward. I think it's a wise advise cos they may decide to do that before opening for new Individuals.

Please, How did you go about getting a date?. I have tried a couple of times for Lagos but it keeps saying no appointment can be scheduled at the moment
