Politics › Re: Factbox: The Effect Of Russia Sanctions On European Companies by PhockPhockMan: 8:57pm On Aug 07, 2014
ochejoseph: The European Union and the United States are
tightening sanctions against Russia, targeting its energy,
banking and defence sectors in the strongest international
action yet over Moscow's support for rebels in eastern
Ukraine.
Below are recent comments and decisions showing the
impact on European companies of the Western sanctions
and Russia's retaliatory measures:
* Rheinmetall slashed its 2014 operating profit target after
the German government withdrew its approval for a
contract with Russia and the group shifted some of its
automotive business to a joint venture.
* Russia will ban all imports of food from the United States
and all fruit and vegetables from Europe, the state news
agency reported on Wednesday.
* Shares of Norwegian fish farmers fall sharply on
Thursday over fears that Russia, their biggest market, will
ban imports as part of its planned sanctions against
Western states.
* Commerzbank is not expecting to face major losses from
its Russia-related business, which may be affected by the
EU sanctions, Chief Financial Officer Stephan Engels said.
* German airport operator Fraport said the crisis in Russia
and the prospect of further sanctions being imposed has
led to considerable uncertainties regarding its stake in St.
Petersburg airport.
* UniCredit, the banking market leader in central and
eastern Europe, said the sanctions would have only a
"marginal" impact on its business there. Its regional
subsidiary Bank Austria forecast solid profits in Russia
despite the sanctions, thanks in part to its ability to raise
money locally, though it warned of lost opportunities.
* Russia's prime minister threatened to retaliate for the
grounding of a subsidiary of national airline Aeroflot
because of the EU sanctions, and one newspaper said
European flights to Asia over Siberia could be banned.
* A low-cost airline run by Russian national carrier
Aeroflot, Dobrolyot (Good Flight), said it would suspend
all flights after its plane lease agreement was cancelled
when the EU slapped sanctions on Moscow.
* Daimler has seen booming growth in the Russian auto
market weaken due to the Ukraine crisis, Chief Executive
Dieter Zetsche told Germany's Bild am Sonntag newspaper.
* Part-nationalised British lender Royal Bank of Scotland
said it had placed restrictions on its lending in Russia
following developments in Ukraine.
* Adidas, the world's No.2 sportswear firm, cut its revenue
and profit targets for this year and scrapped them for next
year, blaming a plunge in sales at its golf business and its
exposure to a weak Russian market.
* The head of Russia's second-largest oil producer, Lukoil,
said the sanctions would force the company to reduce its
investments due to limited access to funds.
* Russian mobile phone operator Megafon said it
converted its foreign currency deposits into roubles and
Hong Kong dollars to protect against any further sanctions.
* Italy's Enel is not considering the sale of its Russian
assets at the moment, the utility's CEO Francesco Starace
said. "It is not wise to sell assets in Russia at this moment,"
Starace said in a conference call.
* German retailer Metro AG said conditions were still not
right to list a stake in its Russian cash-and-carry business,
which was postponed in March due to the Ukraine crisis.
* French oil major Total said it had stopped buying shares
in Russia's Novatek when a Malaysian airliner was shot
down over Ukraine, but it was still too early to gauge the
impact of the sanctions.
* Oil and gas producer BP reported a sharp rise in second-
quarter profits but warned further Western sanctions on
Russia could harm its business there and its relationship
with Russian state oil company Rosneft.
* More than 25,000 jobs are at risk in Germany following
the fresh sanctions, the German Committee on Eastern
European Economic Relations said. "Further damage is
looming for the European and especially the German
export industry. More than 25,000 jobs are in danger in
Germany alone," it said

Politics › I’ll RUN PRO-PEOPLE GOVT. Omisore by PhockPhockMan(op): 7:24pm On Aug 07, 2014
Gubernatorial candidate of the
Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,
Senator Iyiola Omisore, has
promised to restore normalcy to
all disrupted sectors of Osun
society and work within the first
100 days to give hope to hard
pressed people of Osun State.
In a final campaign statement
issued yesterday, Omisore
declared that the welfare of the
people will be paramount in his
leadership his eight-point agenda
will be implemented from a pro-
people angle.
The statement, personally signed
by Omisore, said: “The people will
come first – artisans, public
servants, youth, women and other
sub sectors of the population.
Development programmes will be
people-cantered and I will not
sacrifice the good of our people
for anything. I have gone round
the remotest parts of the state. I
have listened to our people.
“I took notes on all the wards
visited. I promise development
and prosperity that leave no one
behind. Under our eight-point
agenda, we will commit ourselves
to restoration of dignity of
education, people- driven
agriculture policy, enhanced
health care agenda, sustainable
infrastructural development,
mainstreaming of youth and
women development, dignified
employment, restoration of
dignity of public service
administration as well as good
governance and public
accountability”.
Promising to be a governor for all,
irrespective of religious affiliation,
omisore said the divisions created
within our peaceful state by the
APC government will be healed,
adding: “The pains of parents over
evil school policy, the school
policy, the slave holding
agricultural policies and poverty
inducing capital flight will be a
thing of the past. As a royal prince
from paternal and material sides,
I will give due honour to
traditional institutions.”
He pledged to bring his experience
as a certified engineer to bear to
ensure value for money in project
management, saying that “never
will Osun again witness shady
contract awards and engagement
outside due process.”
He added: “Your vote for me on
Saturday is a vote for liberation
from the pains and slavery of the
past four years. If elected
governor on Saturday, I will stand
firm with the people from the
beginning till the end.”

Politics › Osun Election Will Rank Best – Jega by PhockPhockMan(op): 5:25pm On Aug 07, 2014
Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, has assured that Osun election would rank best among elections ever conducted in Nigeria.

The Commission’s Chairman while speaking at the Election Stakeholders “Forum for Osun State Governorship Election” confidently insisted that the election results would be difficult to manipulate.

According to him, the Commission’s objective is to make every election count in the country, noting that the electoral umpire is determined to conduct free, fair and credible election that cannot be challenged in any court of law.

Jega further urged politicians to avoid desperate ways of undermining the electoral processes, saying their actions have been detrimental to political processes in Nigeria.

He warned staff of the commission to be wary of the antics of politicians, saying that whosoever allows himself to be used will have himself to blame.

“We shall not protect anybody who has done wrong in this election”.

Speaking on Saturday’s election in Osun State, Jega said that the ballot papers that will be used in each local government are different from each other, stressing that cloning ballot papers will be difficult and any voter who brings a voter’s card not meant for a local government to another would face the music.

His words, “We have put machinery in place to make the election a success. One of such is that we have put in place colouring coded of the ballot papers, what will be used in one local government area will be quite different from another’’ ‘What we have done in Ekiti State will be different from Osun State’’.

Jega maintained the the materials to be used in Osun election are quality ones, adding that the ballot papers have been serially numbered to guard against fraud and manipulation.

He however warned voters to guide against taking photo of their ballot papers, saying it was against the electoral law.

Also speaking at the occasion, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Suleman Abba said that all the security men on ground are battle ready and fully on ground to suppress any act of thuggery, intimidation and antics of any kind that might want to undermine the election.

“We have gotten enough men to monitor the election in the state, no hiding place for thugs and their sponsors on Saturday.”

The IGP assured people of the state of maximum protection, urging them to go to the polling booth with assurance that they would be protected.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Osun State, Oluwasegun Agbaje said that INEC and all stakeholders cannot afford to fail this time around, urging politicians to guard their utterances.

If that is true, then something must be wrong with the populace.
You know that can never be true when considering the fact that lies is Apc's most potent weapon. Check the way APC is making noise that Jonathan has not done anything in last three years despite his achievements in agriculture, education, aviation, railway, sports, youth empowerment, road infrastructure etc, you will know that those APC guys are struggling for attention. Not every state can afford media coverage like Akwa Ibom, Rivers state and Imo.

Politics › HILARIOUS; APC Calls For Impeachment Of Elechi. by PhockPhockMan(op): 11:11pm On Aug 06, 2014
The Ebonyi State chapter of the All
Progressives Congress (APC), on
Tuesday, called for the
impeachment of the state
Governor, Martin Elechi, over
alleged incompetence, gross
misconduct, reckless borrowing,
loss of focus and abysmal
performance.
Briefing journalists in Abakaliki on
the prolonged crisis rocking the
state House of Assembly and
Elechi’s performance, state
Secretary of the party, Bernard
Ebele, said the most eligible
person to be impeached is the
governor.
According to him: “The members
of Ebonyi State House of Assembly
should stop victimising
themselves and come together to
enact laws that would move
Ebonyi State forward. The most
eligible person to be impeached is
the governor of Ebonyi State”, he
stated.
“The axe of impeachment should
descend on Elechi for
incompetence, gross misconduct,
reckless borrowing, loss of focus
and abysmal performance”.
Ebele said governor has imposed
starvation, taxation, deprivation
and victimisation on the people of
Ebonyi State, adding that for over
seven years, the governor has not
completed and commissioned any
single project.
“Ochudo City is yet to be
completed. International Market is
yet to be completed, likewise
Oferekpe Water Scheme”.
In a related development, the
state Police Command, also on
Tuesday, said it does not yet
recognise anybody as Speaker of
the state House of Assembly.
The Police Public Relations Officer
(PPRO) of the command, Chris
Anyanwu, told Daily Independent
that the police were waiting for
the position of the state
government on the matter.
He explained that the police are
providing security for everybody in
the state including the two
persons laying claim to the post of
the Speaker.
Some lawmakers of the 24-
member House of Assembly, on
July 21, announced the removal of
Chukwuma Nwazunku as Speaker,
and his replacement with Helen
Nwobasi, a development that has
thrown up confusion as to who
should be regards as the Speaker

Politics › DAY 151; Australia To Announce Next Phase Of Search For Missing Malaysia Plane. by PhockPhockMan(op): 3:29pm On Aug 05, 2014
Australian authorities are poised
to announce the next phase of the
underwater search for Malaysia
Airlines flight MH370 this week,
five months after the plane
vanished without a trace.
The Australian Transport Safety
Bureau (ATSB), which is leading
the search for the missing plane
at the Malaysian government’s
request, is expected to engage a
single, private contractor to
search for the Boeing 777-200ER,
and if successfully located, to
positively identify and map the
wreckage.
The operation, which the ATSB
says is likely to begin in early
September and will last up to a
year, will include a number of
underwater vehicles that will
slowly scan some 60,000 square
kilometers (23,000 square miles)
of the southern Indian Ocean,
looking for any sign of aircraft
debris.
It’s not yet clear exactly how the
deep-sea search, which Australia
has estimated will cost $56
million, will play out. While the
ATSB has developed the overall
search strategy, the independent
contractor will be responsible for
day-to-day operations in the
search zone.
“We have the shape of a plan
based on information we have
available to us,” says Martin
Dolan, the ATSB’s Chief
Commissioner. “It’s a concept we
need to test out with the
operation experts and come up
with the detailed plan… for the
conduct of the search.”
