COVID-19: Experimental drug remdesivir failed in human trial —Punch Newspaper Published April 23, 2020 The experimental antiviral drug remdesivir has failed in its first randomized clinical trial to treat the COVID-19 illness, reports said Thursday, quoting draft documents that were accidentally published by the World Health Organization. Gilead Sciences, the company behind the medicine, disputed how the now-deleted post had characterized the findings, saying the data showed a “potential benefit.” The Financial Times reported that researchers in China carried out a study on 237 patients, giving the drug to 158 and comparing their progress with a control group of 79. A summary of the experiment said remdesivir was “not associated with a difference in time to clinical improvement” compared to the control, according to health news site Stat, which posted a screenshot. After a month, 13.9 percent of the patients on remdesivir had died compared to 12.8 per cent of those in the control group. A spokesman for Gilead told AFP: “We believe the post included inappropriate characterizations of the study,” saying it was terminated early due to low enrollment and was therefore not statistically meaningful. “As such, the study results are inconclusive, though trends in the data suggest a potential benefit for remdesivir, particularly among patients treated early in disease,” he said. The study does not represent the final word on the matter and there are several large-scale trials in advanced stages that should soon provide a clearer picture. Remdesivir, which is administered intravenously, was among the first drugs mooted as a treatment for the novel coronavirus and as such has great hopes riding on it. Last week, Stat reported it had shown significant efficacy at a Chicago hospital where patients who are part of one of the major trials are being treated. The US National Institutes for Health also reported it had proven effective in a small experiment on monkeys. Remdesivir belongs to a class of drugs that act on the virus directly — as opposed to controlling the abnormal and often lethal autoimmune response it causes. It mimics one of the four building blocks of RNA and DNA and gets absorbed into the virus’s genome, which in turn stops the pathogen from replicating. Susan Okpe, a UK returnee is the first victim of COVID-19 in Benue State. She returned from UK last week. Addressing the press over the index case, Governor Samuel Ortom stressed that the essence of revealing the identity of the victim is to help those who had close contact with her to sef-isolate and present themselves for testing. Hope the Federal Government learns from this.

Politics / Iranian Leader Criticizes Buhari Over COVIK 1-9 Pronunciation, Trends On Twitter by phylshan: 10:46am On Mar 28, 2020 |
Anti-'Boo-hari' tweet by Iranian topples coronavirus on Nigeria Twitter trends Despite the coronavirus pandemic dominating news and social media spaces since the last few weeks, there is a ‘competitor’ that on Friday dethroned coronavirus to become the top Twitter trend in Nigeria. Mohammed Tawhidi threw jibes at Muhammadu Buhari, the Nigerian president, and whiles at it he has generated a heated debate among Nigerians. Tawhidi, a self acclaimed Imam of Peace, is an Iranian currently living in Australia. When he posted a tweet mocking the Nigerian leader early on Friday, it is likely that he could not have anticipated the reactions that it was to trigger. His initial post referenced Buhari’s only known video address till date on the coronavirus. In the said video released on March 22, Buhari is heard stressing that COVID-19 was a key government priority and everything was been done to protest citizens from the virus. “The President of Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari still doesn’t know the name of the virus killing 24,000+ at such a rapid rate. Addressing the nation about it for the first time, he pronounced the virus as ‘CIVIK 1-9’,” Tawhidi wrote in his first tweet. His continued use of the term #PresidentCovik has also been a top trend on Nigeria Twitter. As many reactions as his post generates, he continues to fire responses at Nigerians, some of who are known critics of the government but are asking him to respect the country. Imam of Peace ✔ @Imamofpeace I love Nigeria. I have one Nigerian friend and she’s amazing. One of the most successful and honest people I know. I also welcome my new Nigerian followers on Twitter. You have a beautiful country but it would be more beautiful without the terrorism enabled by Dictator Buhari. According to Tawhidi, Nigeria was in its current predicament because of Buhari citing corruption and inter-faith clashes. In the case of the latter he blamed it on “Weak leadership of Buhari” who he described as a “Failed President” who had “No realistic agenda to tackle Jihadists.” Two former government appointees and known critics of Buhari have since backed him. Reno Omokri, an aide to former president Goodluck Jonathan and Femi Fani-Kayode, a former aviation minister backed Tawhidi againt Buhari in tweets. But the ‘Imam’ has gotten a good measure of responses as much as praises for his views. Most people have exposed his as a fraud who has long been unraveled by the western media for his clandestine and parochial agenda. A member of the presidency pulled up chats supposed to be of Tawhidi seeking audience with Buhari years back. The last time Buhari was seen was on Thursday evening when an aide on new media posted a photo of the president working at his office in the presidency. That tweet birthed a hashtag #BuhariChallenge where tweeps sought to rubbish the post. Johannes Tobi W. ✔ @Johannxs @Imamofpeace is a conman & jobber. Last year he reached out to me seeking audience with the President, that he could negotiate with IMN’s Zakzaky for the gov’t. His move was suspicious and questionable. His attack on Pres. Buhari is nothing short of cowardice & blackmail. Source: Today News Africa file:///storage/emulated/0/Download/1024x538_1060433.jpg

Health / LUTH Sends Man Away After Testing Positive To COVD-19 For Lack Of Bed Space by phylshan: 10:51am On Mar 27, 2020 |
: 10:23am EXCLUSIVE: Lagos University Teaching Hospital Sends Away Man Who Tested Positive For Coronavirus Over Lack Of Bed Space Benson, who had hoped to be quarantined and treated at LUTH after being tested at the government-owned hospital on March 21, was asked to go back home over lack of bed space to admit him at the facility. Benson, who had hoped to be quarantined and treated at LUTH after being tested at the government-owned hospital on March 21, was asked to go back home over lack of bed space to admit him at the facility. SaharaReporters gathered that since the refusal of LUTH to admit Benson, he had returned home and continued his normal life. “He moved to and from LUTH through public transportation. “He has been mingling freely with people,” a friend to the young man told SaharaReporters on Thursday. When contacted by SaharaReporters on Thursday night after his mobile number was supplied to one of our correspondents, Benson indeed confirmed that he tested positive for the virus and was not admitted to LUTH for treatment by medical personnel. He disclosed that he went for the test after coming in contact with the two UK returnees at a dinner party in Lagos last week. When asked if money was demanded from him before the test was conducted, Benson refused to open up, instead saying that he does not want unnecessary attention. While chatting with one of our correspondents on social networking platform, Whatsapp, Benson, who expressed fear of being stigmatised should his story be published, quickly deleted his display photo on his profile. He was standing with an unidentified person in the photo where both men were wearing tags over their necks. He said, “I am at home on self-isolation now. "I had the test at LUTH even though the queue was too long. “Some of the medical staff I spoke with later advised me to go home and self-isolate. "They said I should get back to them after 14 days or that in seven days they might call to check my progress. "I was infected at a dinner party organised for the two men who returned to Nigeria from the UK. "I went for the test on March 21." When asked if he had attempted to contact the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control to notify them of his situation and probably seek help, Benson said, “I have called the NCDC lines several times but they are not picking up the call.” To further give credence to Benson's situation, the NCDC on Thursday night announced 12 new confirmed cases of Coronavirus in Lagos out of the total 14 detected in the country. Nigeria now has 65 confirmed cases of the virus and one recorded death. Testing kits for the virus are being used for politicians and their families while ordinary Nigerians with symptoms of the pandemic are being left to their fates. Till date, less than 200 persons have been tested for the virus in Nigeria despite Lagos alone having a population of over 20 million persons. An official of the Nigerian Medical Association told SaharaReporters that the number of confirmed cases declared by NCDC was far below the real figure, adding that there were already hundreds of citizens infected with Coronavirus walking and freely mixing up with others thus increasing the risk of a further spread.
