Foreign Affairs / Trump Gives WHO Ultimatum Over COVID-19 Handling by phylshan: 9:25am On May 20, 2020 |
UNITED States (U.S.) President Donald Trump has threatened to permanently pull funding from the World Health Organisation (WHO), if it does not commit to “major substantive improvements” within 30 days, according to a letter to the WHO chief shared by Trump on Twitter. In a four-page letter to WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Trump set out what he called “repeated missteps” by the organisation. Trump claimed that the WHO shares the responsibility for the large number of deaths in the crisis. He alleged that mismanagement on the part of the WHO and reliance on information from China had dramatically worsened the epidemic and spread it globally. Trump said he would make a temporary freeze of funding permanent and might also reconsider U.S. membership of the organisation at the end of the 30-day deadline if he saw no improvements. “The only way forward for the World Health Organisation is if it can actually demonstrate independence from China,” the U.S. president asserted. He said discussions with the organisation on how to reform the WHO had already begun. “But action is needed quickly. We do not have time to waste. “I cannot allow American taxpayer dollars to continue to finance an organisation that, in its present state, is so clearly not serving America’s interests,” Trump concluded. The U.S. president faced international criticism when he announced in April that he would be halting funding to the WHO while a 60- to 90-day review took place. He has also faced criticism over how the White House initially responded to the virus. Trump has repeatedly accused the organisation of failing in its response to the coronavirus pandemic. He said U.S. taxpayers provided between 400 and 500 million dollars a year to the organisation. That funding is largely appropriated by Congress. Trump’s criticisms of the WHO echo some experts, who say the organisation relied too heavily on information from China in the initial stages of the outbreak. Trump’s ultimatum also comes at a time of pressure for the WHO. On Monday, Tedros backed a review of the agency’s handling of the pandemic. He said an independent evaluation would take place “at the earliest appropriate moment”. Health Secretary Alex Azar spoke at the WHO’s World Health Assembly and accused the organisation of letting Covid-19 spin “out of control” at the cost of “many lives”. In his letter to Tedros, the U.S. president accuses the WHO of having an “alarming lack of independence” from China. The Nation Newspaper 1 Like 1 Share

Health / Ortom Confirms Third Case Of COVID-19 In Benue State by phylshan: 8:06am On May 12, 2020 |
Ejembi, Makurdi Exactly one week after recording its second case, Benue State has recorded a third COVID-19 case in the person of Mrs Rebecca Apedzan, a third republic House of Representatives member and former commissioner in the state. Announcing the news to reporters at the Government House on Monday, the state governor, Samuel Ortom, who noted that it was not yet clear how Apedzan caught the virus, disclosed that she was in a meeting with him yesterday. “We were in a meeting together yesterday although we maintained social distancing. However, even though I had done the test in the past which returned negative, I will have to go for another test again,” he said. The governor urged all those who had been in contact with her in the last 14 days to come out and get themselves tested, saying both the test and treatment for COVID-19 is free. While noting that COVID-19 is real, the governor said it is not a death sentence as hundreds of people who got infected have been treated and discharged in many states of the federation. He encouraged all Benue people to stay indoors, stressing that if they must come out, they should wear a face mask and follow all other laid down protocols. Governor Ortom added that the ban on church and mosque meetings will be reviewed and may be lifted in the next two weeks after which it would be reviewed again, even as he urged church and mosque leaders to continue to offer prayers privately. On his part, the Chairman of the Benue State COVID-19 Action Committee and Deputy Governor, Engr Benson Abounu, disclosed that the suspected COVID-19 case in Otukpo was actually a young man from Akpa land who was working as a security man for a family in Ogun. According to Abounu, when the man started feeling unwell at his duty post in Ogun he went and submitted his sample for testing. “The young man said after 24 hours, he went back for the result but was told it would be ready in 48 hours. When he returned home, his master ejected him from the house and since he didn’t have anywhere to go, he called his mother to inform her what had happened and that he was on his way back home. “The information got to the COVID-19 Committee and surveillance was mounted for the vehicle bringing him at Otukpo-Enugu roundabouts. The vehicle arrived around 4 pm and all 15 passengers including the driver of the vehicle were taken into isolation. “I ordered that 14 passengers be taken into isolation while the young man is going to be quarantined in Otukpo. The young man said he was still feeling sick but samples of all the passengers and the driver had been taken and have been taken to Abuja and result would be expected any moment from now,” Abounu stated. www.sunnewsonline.com

For Benue’s second most wanted criminal kingpin, Terungwa Igbagwa (alias Orjondu) and his girlfriend, the world was over even before the first cock crow on Friday. They were quietly picked up by a team of Nigerian soldiers, thus ending the reign of terror and fear that Orjondu created in Benue and parts of Taraba States. Details have now emerged of how the notorious militia leader was killed near Zaki Biam by a special commando operation of the combined team of Operation Whirl Strike tracking team and Special Forces of Sector 2 of the Nigerian Army last week. The details were exclusively obtained by The Voice, which commenced investigation into the dramatic end of Orjondu immediately after his death. Investigations by The Voice Correspondent in Zaki Biam revealed that the notorious warlord whom the security services believed “was responsible for kidnapping, armed robbery, assassination, gun running and other criminal activities around Katsina-Ala, Ukum and Logo Local Government Areas for many years was caught unaware in a thatched house where he had gone to spend a night with his girlfriend. Until he met his waterloo, Mr Igbagwa was the second most wanted person in Benue State, next only to Gana, the most wanted person in the state. The Voice investigations revealed that members of the team that took out Mr Terungwa came in four Toyota Hilux vans and surrounded the compound where the wanted fellow was spending the night with his girlfriend. According to one of our sources, his girlfriend came out of the hut around 4am to ease herself only to discover that some men in uniform had surrounded the compound. She was seized by members of the team who took her back to the hut where Orjondu was holed up; unaware of what was going on. When Orjondu realized the presence of intruders, he was helpless as members of the team were already upon him, forcing him to plead with them to spare his life. “He pleaded with members of the team to spare him but he was shot and restrained with handcuffs and further sought to positively confirm his identity from one of the little children found in one of the huts in the compound. The boy insisted that the man in their custody was not Orjondu (the alias that the security forces knew him with) but Terungwa the source told The Voice. It was gathered that although he was shot, Mr Terungwa was still alive but bleeding profusely. He was tied like a goat that was about to be slaughtered and thrown into one of the Force’s vans after receiving thorough beating our source volunteered. Mr Terungwa and his girlfriend were taken to Makurdi, the Benue state capital through Alabaa-Tor Donga- Katsina road. The Voice gathered that the warlord’s girlfriend was then taken from Makurdi to Wanunne, the capital of Tarka local government Area on the Makurdi-Gboko road by some members of the Squad where she was given some money to go back to her village. She was the person that broke the news in the village that the notorious warlord had died from his bleeding The Voice correspondent was informed by one of the villagers. It was confirmed to The Voice that some arms and ammunition were recovered during the operation, while two thatch houses (the one that Orjondu was inside and another one close by) were reportedly torched by the retreating Special Forces while a nearbykKiosk was also set ablaze when soldiers visited the area last Friday to assess the area. The Voice also gathered that apart from the operation that led to the elimination of Gana’s former second in command, Special Forces had carried out a similar operation at Gbor, Tongov, a nearby market to Zaki Biam, and four suspected hoodlums were reportedly killed while nine were arrested. The Voice learnt that after the Gbor Market operation, Mr. Orjondu informed his boys to be on alert as he suspected that he would be the next target by security men. It was gathered that before his elimination by the Army’s Special Forces, he was attacked last month by rival Tongov militia but he reportedly escaped. His wife was said to have been injured and the Militia who were believed to be acting at the behest of Gana reportedly carted away a box containing his charms that was reportedly handed over to the Benue most wanted Terwase Agwaza, alias Ghana, for safe keeping. The Voice gathered that the information that led to the death of Orjondu may have been provided by some of his boys that were arrested in recent raids by the army. The Defence Headquarters had last week on Friday disclosed that the second most wanted Militia leader in Benue State, Terungwa Igbagwa, aka Orjondu, was eliminated by Special Forces Major General John Enenche, Coordinator, Defence Media Operations had said in a statement that Orjondu is the second most wanted criminal kingpin next to Gana in Benue State. “He was responsible for kidnapping, armed robbery, assassination, gun running and other criminal activities around Katsina-Ala, Ukum and Logo LGA’s for many years. “Items recovered from him included one AK 47 rifle, one locally made rifle, one AK 47 magazine with 30 rounds of 7.62mm special and some charms. “The Military High Command congratulates Operation Whirl Strike for its exploits in recent times” he had said.
