Health / Breaking: British Researchers Identify Six Types Of COVID-19 by phylshan: 6:12am On Jul 21, 2020
Researchers from the King's College London in the UK have recently identified six distinct types of COVID-19 by analyzing data collected from a COVID-19 tracking application, saying each of the type distinguished by a cluster of symptoms.

The researchers said these types also correlated with levels of severity of infection, and with the likelihood of a patient needing help with breathing during hospitalization, such as oxygen or ventilator treatment.

The findings "have major implications for clinical management of COVID-19, and could help doctors predict who is most at risk and likely to need hospital care in a second wave of coronavirus infections," according to the college's official website.

Data from the COVID Symptom Study app reveals that symptoms including headaches, muscle pains, fatigue, diarrhea, confusion, loss of appetite and shortness of breath are also what patients can experience, besides the three commonly known key symptoms of the disease – cough, fever and loss of smell.

It also shows that patients differ significantly in the progression and outcome, as some only had mild flu-like symptoms while others suffered acute symptoms or died.

In attempt to find out people with what symptoms would develop to a severe condition and who would need oxygen or ventilator support, the researchers used a machine learning algorithm to analyze data from the app obtained from "around 1,600 users in the UK and U.S. with confirmed COVID-19 who had regularly logged their symptoms using the app in March and April."

They also tested the algorithm by applying it on another independent dataset of around 1,000 users in the UK, U.S. and Sweden, who had logged their symptoms in May.

The study, released online on June 16 but not peer-reviewed by independent scientists, described the six clusters as:

1. "flu-like" with no fever: Headache, loss of smell, muscle pains, cough, sore throat, chest pain, no fever.

2. "flu-like" with fever: Headache, loss of smell, cough, sore throat, hoarseness, fever, loss of appetite.

3. gastrointestinal: Headache, loss of smell, loss of appetite, diarrhea, sore throat, chest pain, no cough.

4. severe level one, fatigue: Headache, loss of smell, cough, fever, hoarseness, chest pain, fatigue.

5. severe level two, confusion: Headache, loss of smell, loss of appetite, cough, fever, hoarseness, sore throat, chest pain, fatigue, confusion, muscle pain.

6. severe level three, abdominal and respiratory: Headache, loss of smell, loss of appetite, cough, fever, hoarseness, sore throat, chest pain, fatigue, confusion, muscle pain, shortness of breath, diarrhea, abdominal pain.

Patients with cluster 4, 5 and 6 types were more likely to be admitted to hospitals and more likely to need respiratory support, the researchers said, as "only 1.5 percent of people with cluster 1, 4.4 percent of people with cluster 2 and 3.3 percent of people with cluster 3 COVID-19 required breathing support. These figures were 8.6 percent, 9.9 percent and 19.8 percent for clusters 4, 5 and 6 respectively."

"These findings have important implications for care and monitoring of people who are most vulnerable to severe COVID-19," said Dr Claire Steves from King's College London who co-led the study.

"If you can predict who these people are at day five, you have time to give them support and early interventions such as monitoring blood oxygen and sugar levels, and ensuring they are properly hydrated – simple care that could be given at home, preventing hospitalizations and saving lives."

British-developed antibody test

At the same time, researchers from the Oxford University partnered with local diagnosis companies have developed a COVID-19 antibody test, which is said to be able to identify if a person has been exposed to the novel coronavirus within 20 minutes, The Telegraph reported on Friday.

Designed for home use, the finger-prick test reached an accuracy of 98.6 percent in secret human trials last month.

Tens of thousands of prototypes have been manufactured for validation testing of the AbC-19 lateral flow test, and the regulatory approval from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency is expected in coming weeks, the report said.

It added that ministers hope that the test will be available for use in a mass screening program before the end of the year.

Family / My Life In Ruins, Says Man Who Lost Wife, 3 Kids In Auto Crash by phylshan: 9:01am On Jul 18, 2020
It has been nine odd months since Tarveshima Jebe lost his entire family of a wife and three children in an auto crash, but he is still far from getting over the disaster.

Tragedy had befallen the indigene of Tse Jebe in Mbagba, Mbahine, Ushongo Local Government Area, Benue State on September 14, 2019 when a vehicle his 32-year-old wife, Comfort, and children (David,10; Beauty, 7 and Favour, 2) were traveling in from Abuja to Makurdi crashed on Eggon-Lafia Road.

Since then, he has been grappling with an experience his fragile posture can hardly bear. Every new day, his mind is crowded with thoughts of his lost loved ones who were committed to mother earth on September 18 last year.

“For seven months after their burial in September last year, I could not sleep even for a minute,” he said as he recalled the good times he had with his wife and children before tragedy struck.

“I met my wife before she entered secondary school in Gboko and we started a relationship right then.

“She eventually completed her secondary school as my wife before she went to higher institution. So we have come a long way.

“I raise this woman myself and I never thought she could die before me.

“I was already laying the foundation for her to take care of my children even if I’m not there.

“She was so submissive to me, and they lived in Makurdi with my mother while I stayed in Abuja.

“A few months before their death, I travelled to Benin Republic on official duty.

“When I came back, the holyday was long, so I decided that they should come over to Abuja and spend their vacation with me.

“While in Abuja, we were going to Kaduna on a daily basis, enjoying ourselves on the train as one united family.

“We bought a lot of things in the process because I wanted them to enjoy life. I didn’t know we were having our last fun together.

“God took them away from me.”

He said that taking another wife is out of the question, because he does not fancy a situation where the new woman would provoke him and he would be reminded of his wife.

In a post he made on Saturday, July 11, the man said that it is his first night at the centre and he really cannot complain. Was he really laughing or it's sarcasm? He added a laughing emoticon to the tweet with the hashtag #CoronaPapa.

Family / Triplet Brothers Marry Triplet Sisters In Enugu by phylshan: 10:08am On Jun 10, 2020
In today’s day and age, it is not uncommon to hear of a mother giving birth to triplets, however, what is rarer is to have three triplets marry another set of triplets on same day

This is the case in a recently concluded holy matrimony in Enugu state as two sets of triplets married each other over the weekend in Ngwo.

The triplet brothers, Kenechukwu, Chinedu, and Chukwuebuka got married to triplet sisters, Okwuoma, Dumalu, and Chinwe and the occasion was witnessed by intimate family and friends.

The brides who are not identical, all rocked white ball gowns, while the grooms all navy blue suits.

Travel / Retired DSP Mourns His Only Two Children Burnt To Death On Okada by phylshan: 4:11am On Jun 07, 2020
My life in ruins — Retired DSP laments as his only two children burn to death in okada accident

The joy of 64-year-old retired Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Abdul Alkali, knew no bounds when his wife was delivered of their first baby 19 years ago after many years in marriage without an issue. But it all turned into ashes in his mouth on April 26 when the only two children the marriage produced were burnt to death after their motorcycle was involved in an accident.

The tragedy that befell him is a reminder of the ugly fate of the biblical Job. Abdul Alkali, a retired Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), woke up on April 26 the proud father of two grown up children, but by sunset he had become childless.

His only two children, Patience (13) and Destiny (19), allegedly burnt to death after an accident impelled by some men of the Nasarawa State Youth Empowerment Scheme (NAYES), leaving the 64-year-old man to reel in the shock of an irreparable loss.

“God has inflicted a permanent wound on my entire life,” he said as he fought back tears in an interview with our correspondent at his Tundun Gwandara residence in Lafia, the state capital, threatening to take his own life.

“There is absolutely no point keeping me alive. I think I should just commit suicide and die too.

“God is not fair to me, and I don’t know my offence.

“Why my children? Why not me? Why now?

“How can God take away my only two children at once in their youthful age?”

He was particularly irked that more than one month after the tragic incident occurred on Doma Road in Lafia, no one was being held accountable.

In an emotion laden voice, the distraught father recalled the accident that culminated in the tragic end of his teenage children.

Quoting the last words that Destiny told him before he gave up the ghost at Dalhatu Arab Specialist Hospital (DASH) in Lafia, Alkali said the two children were riding on a motorcycle when they ran into some officials of NAYES.

He said: “When I got to the hospital, I asked Destiny, who was still alive, what actually happened, because his body was burnt.

“He said he was riding with his sister on a bike when two NAYES officers on the road side tried to hit them with a stick.

“He said that out of fear, he tried to dodge the stick but fell down on the highway.

“The motorcycle immediately caught fire and burnt the two of them while the NAYES officers took to their heels.

“They were admitted at DASH the same day where they both gave up after explaining in details what happened to them.

“I am appealing to the authorities concerned to ensure that all the people involved in the death

of my children are prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.

64-year-old retired Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Abdul Alkali
“As a retired police DSP, I will pursue this case to its logical end.

“God! What have I done to deserve this type of punishment?

“How can I forget my two children? It is just not possible because they were amazing to me.

“I will forever miss them with everything within me.”

Also speaking, Alkali’s younger brother, Promise, expressed sadness over the incident that claimed the lives of the two “adorable” teenagers, calling for justice as no efforts was made to save their lives.

He said: “Cutting them short at the prime of their age is disheartening and disturbing.

“I feel that if justice is not done, correction will not be made.

“If they are left to go scot-free, it will still repeat itself. So it is not just for us but for others too.

“If justice is not done, the truth of the matter is it will still repeat itself, because they will feel that they can do it again and get away with it.

“I was in the hospital with them. The level of negligence from the medical personnel is alarming.

“For more than three hours around midnight, there was no single doctor, nurse or attendant in the hospital.

“The patients were just left to cater for themselves.

“Destiny started jerking up and gasping for breath at about 3:30 am. There was no one to attend to them.

“I had to move round the hospital. And when I got one nurse, he was there so helpless; not even knowing what to do. And that was where Destiny gave up.”

But speaking with our correspondent, an eyewitness, Mr Mohammed Abu, who runs a pharmacy within the area where the incident occurred, said the unfortunate development occurred around Doma Road, near Diamond/Access Bank.

He noted that the deceased were on a motorcycle while a state proclamation prohibits private or commercial motorcycles from moving round the town as part of the measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the state.

He said that the two siblings met their deaths when the personnel of NAYES chased them with the aim of arresting them for violating the state government’s order.

He said: “This was how the two children died: as they were conveying fuel on the bike, their crashing down ignited fire and they were burnt.”

The General Manager of NAYES in the state, Labaran Maina, denied the allegation that his men were responsible for the death of the two young siblings.

He said: “I was undertaking an assignment at Keana over the plans to evacuate Al-Majiris when the news got to me.

“In fact, I can lead you to the scene where the accident happened and also show you where my men were standing, which is about 40 meters away from where these young people crashed on the bike and got burnt.

“On my findings, I was reliably told that nobody chased them. The police and the Civil Defence operatives also confirmed this.

“And to add to it, since the lockdown order and we are listed among those to complement the efforts of the conventional securities, I instructed my men not to carry sticks or whips against any person, but to be strict in ensuring that enforcement was not compromised.”

The Nasarawa State Commissioner of Police, Bola Longe, said the command was already investigating the death of the two siblings.

Politics / PDP Clears Cross River LG Elections by phylshan: 2:53am On Jun 01, 2020
The ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State has taken an expected victory from the local government elections conducted last Saturday in the state.

As 6.pm on Sunday, the State Independent Electoral Commission had announced results from 10 out of 18 local government areas in the state.

All ten local government chairmanship seats and all the available councillorship seats were all cleared by the PDP.

The leading opposition political party in the state, the All Progressive Congress(APC) was bedeviled by a factional crisis.

Among the 10 local government areas whose results for the chairmanship and councillorship seats were announced were: Akamkpa, Akpabuyo, Bakassi, Calabar Municipality, Calabar South, Etung, Ikom, Obubra, Odukpani, and Yakurr local government areas.

The turnout during the polls was low in some areas and fair in others in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

But chairman of the Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission, Mike Ushie explained that the commission adopted and strictly followed the Covid-19 election protocols recently released by INEC for elections in Edo and Ondo.
According to him, there was adherence to physical distancing, provision of hand sanitizers and water for handwashing with soap.

Ushie noted that he was happy at the crisis-free local government election particularly after a number of postponements over five years.

He revealed that five political parties were participating in the polls, including the governing People’s Democratic Party and a factional group of the leading All Progressive Congress in the state.

State government rejects claims, insists all contacts tested negative
We say no to fictitious cases —Govt
The Kogi State Government is unrelenting in disputing claims by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the family of a COVID-19 patient of the existence of the deadly virus in the state.

The family of Ahmad Ejibunu, the Chief Imam of Kabba, said in a statement that he tested positive for COVID-19 following a test at the National Hospital, Abuja.

He was referred to the hospital from the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Lokoja after he was initially taken to the Specialist Hospital in Kabba for what was thought to be flu.

Senator Dino Melaye said yesterday that he personally knows the man in question and had confirmed that his family was telling the truth about his status, but the state government would have none of that.

The Commissioner for Health, Saka Audu, said the state government would not accept what he described as fictitious cases.

He said the tests conducted on all the contacts of those who were said to have COVID-19 in the state turned out to be negative.

The Obatebise of Oweland, Chief Tai Ejibunu, had in a statement on Friday said Ahmad Ejibunu, the Chief Imam of Kabba, tested positive at the National Hospital, Abuja.

Ejibunu said the Kogi State Government should stop living in self denial.

The Local Government elections held in Benue State yesterday were all won by the People's Democratic Party (PDP). Although the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission is yet to announce results, it is all victory for the PDP.
Of course, no other party fielded candidates for the elections apart from the PDP as the other parties were not sure of victory should they field any candidate. The All Progressives Congress (APC) in particular may have learned its lesson from the 2016 LGA elections where then in power, was able to clear all available seats.
Today the Governor, Samuel Ortom who was then in the APC has crossed over to the PDP. The fear in the camp of the APC is that results will be manipulated the same way they were done in the 2016 elections since the same invisible hand that could manipulate results is still operating behind the scenes, now on the other side of the divide.
