While Hashirama hasn't been shown to do so, I assume he must be a little like Juugo who gathers natural energy passively and uses it when he deems it fit or he may be different from others reason being he doesn't need to be in a stagnant position to gather energy. Hashirama uses senjutsu and that is why you've seen him use it to whoop the kyuubi with a thousand hands technique and also to hold the juubi down when the barrier of the four red suns was created.
