Travel / Re: Nigerian Students In Germany..how Do You Survive?? by pompido: 10:16am On May 02, 2019 |
I am greatly pleased to be on this thread and actually read from the very first page Quite educative and brings back a flood of memories. We thank God for grace. All questions asked and answers given (sliding tackles and all ) are great learning curves for all. My summary.... Landed October 3rd 2015.....Digital Communications in CAU Kiel. Took the first lecture and knew it wasn't for me. Told the profs so and opted out of the program (was still registered of course and was attending the german class provided by the school and intensive language class with VHS at the same time (register with VHS in your city within your first year to get a good rebate (up to 50% off) you can select a start date months away). Switched to Information Engineering in FH Kiel the following summer (March 2016), did multiple jobs while studying (Printing presses, Cruise ships, Umzug, Chinese Restaurant. etc. Man hustle oooo....days of 12hrs straight jobs 4 times a week and top it with a 13hrs shift on Sundays I was actually doing good in school but learning the language suffered as I couldn't fit it in the calamitous schedule I was running (I did attend intensive classes later though). Then I got a rude awakening , I visited my naija university mate in Berlin working for Bombardier at the time and immediately knew I was wasting my time with the lager jobs I thought was giving me money. I needed to look at the bigger picture. Got back from Berlin and applied to Allianz Technology in Munich for internship, I got in and all of a sudden was making more working 9-5pm (own office with perks, fantastic international team and exposure into the professional world in Germany) than i was doing working 12hrs (4times a week) plus 13hrs on sundays. All, while doing professional work and improving my professional profile. I was at Allianz Technology for 1yr & 3months (finished my master project and thesis) and got 2 full time offers before I was done with my master study in October of 2018. My advice, do what you have to do to survive out here (legally of course). Make sure you pick the right course and if you find yourself in a jam with your choice course, be open to changing. Do not worry about hustling, it is not going to be at the top of your priorities when you actually settle and draw those priorities. Especially if you are looking at the bigger picture. Work will always be available, whether in your city or outside but believe me when I say you will be alright and find a way as everyone before you have done. Learn the language Before you leave Nigeria or wherever you are based, set your goals (minimum and maximum), have unbelievably high expectations but also psych yourself up for the very worst case scenario so that wherever you find yourself, you would be mentally grounded to face the music and sing out loud because darkness lasts just the night, light comes with the break of dawn. God bless our dreams and make our strives abundantly fruitful... 36 Likes 7 Shares |

Eldeee: You have made succinct points and I completely understand what you mean (I have felt that way too ). What you should understand is that there are other factors that contribute to the withdrawal of many folks once they land in Deutschland (No details needed here). Another reason for the withdrawal is the attitude of those being helped. A lot of help has turned sour because of one gridlock or the other. This experiences many have from trying to help has made them and many others decide to withdraw (and besides, their lives here is a herculean task on its own). The truth is you actually can not expect everyone that has landed in Germany to continually share their experiences here, the best you can hope for is that you keep having 1 or 2 people provide the updates you need for every application period. If you find you have many more contributing, appreciate it and try to use the gained knowledge to help others. This way the flow of information and assistance never ends. Some land and find it very hard, some find it a bit softer and just need to get their bearings while others land armed with all the right info and connections allowing for smooth sailing. Nothing lasts, make the most of every second and make it count! Now and Later. Wishing everyone the very best. 4 Likes 1 Share |

Armstrong34: Good observation. The shift in time from 12 midnight to 11pm is because Germany is now 1 hour ahead of Nigeria. The scheduling server uses German time. Nice advice on the use of Chrome autofill. Been a minute here All the best. |

nanoparticle: Do not come to Germany! The simple reason is that your profession is not practiced in English here, so trying to wriggle your way around will simply be a waste of your precious time. Take that big-headed guy's (@Obiwann advice and look towards Canada via the Express Entry route or if studying is your thing, then M.Sc in Canada, Australia, New Zealand or even South Africa. These are places where you will not need a wholesome shift in careers to get a move on. Think things through but definitely look to leave Nigeria. God bless Nigeria. Best wishes 8 Likes 1 Share |

KINGCEEZAH: You kind of missed the point where he said Skill is the determining factor. up to 95% of those I know that got internships and Jobs(after studies) speak near zero German. Loads of companies will employ skilled people without German knowledge and pay for them to learn the language on the job. So this statement Germans would employ Ausbildung/ Bachelors grad who speaks German over masters grad that does not plus your C++ and MATLAB is absolutely incorrect. Of course this is not saying Forget the Language, I am just saying that most companies here employ skill over language, especially in STEM. 10 Likes 2 Shares |

Adhheir: You seem to not fully understand his message and I probably can see why..... The point is that unless a school specifically states that ML is not needed (as is applicable in the case you posted), it is advisable to always add it to your application document. It never hurts and Yes some schools will deny admission because they could not find the little extra needed to give an applicant the edge over others (where ML would come handy to showcase the applicant). This I believe is what was meant by ''schools rejecting based on no ML submitted''. He did also state that if the schools says it is not required to submit ML then there is nothing to worry about.... Writing as simply as possible is never a bad thing too...... |

It would be really nice if you share your experience here so that new applicants or those in similar situations can learn from your experience. Documenting your goal from the onset, what you looked out for in schools, enquires you made and responses got from schools that helped shape your applications, additional boosters you added (if applicable) to your application to give you the desired results (IELTS, Professional certifications, etc)..... ritlala: If you have started applying to schools, please continue. Being Pregnant will not stop you from getting visa (especially if it isn't too obvious during interview). I have friends who came in here while pregnant, have given birth here and are still schooling. Let me not deceive you, it will be tough at first but once you get into the routine, you will be very fine. 1. Your insurance covers you and your baby (antenatal and treatments all free) 2. Your delivery will be free of charge (insurance covers that too) 3. After delivery, you are expected to take a year off to take care of your child 4. Your school should help you with kindergarten for your child when the time comes for that. 5. You just might apply and get some benefits from the state you live. So, it is definitely doable and being a lady, you should be able to mix and make friends easily. Your hubby's support is of course paramount because you will need all the help you can get but, it definitely is doable as people are already doing that. All the best. 19 Likes |

Chriswazo: Thank you Chris, most appreciated. I got all the help I needed back in 2015 here and promised to do what I can to provide pointers to others. That is what I am trying to do . There was a time while I was still studying that I didn't even visit here for months if not years, so new applicants should understand that when some people in DE disappear completely, it wasn't because they forgot, just that sometimes water dey pass garri, but we thank God for grace. Wish everyone the very best. Funny bit P.S: Someone went to buy traveling boxes today and couldn't believe the crowd of people buying boxes, come dey ask me if everyone is leaving Nigeria and who will be left If I hear say people no cut from Naija 2 Likes 1 Share |

Paixman: You should try sending emails to the admissions office of the universities you wish to apply to. The angle to play here is to present your grades (current transcript) in the present masters in addition to your HND (if you have some work experience in your field, attache your CV), and then ask if this combination could be considered for admission into a masters program. You just might get positive responses to apply. All the very best |

Globalstamp: Send them a mail requesting a date and at the same time try and get a date on the portal. Mail the school for an extension or worst case scenario defer your admission. Those are your options... AM takes 4 to 6 weeks and could be ready in a few days (7 days response has been reported) especially if you fund before the interview......... All the best!!! |

Globalstamp: [s]You should have gone with printed emails showing the entire communication and the fact that 22nd was duly cancelled for you. Well, as it stands, you need to mail them to confirm if the 22nd still stands as they have made the error of not registering you for today or will they be giving you another appointment. You will have to persist and copy all their email addresses that you know to get a fast response. Make sure you emphasize the fact that they did the first booking and the rebooking and as such should proffer a solution. In the meantime, try and get another appointment via the portal if you can.[/s] I just read your initial explanation again and saw that you got the 22nd via online and 11th as a response to your email application. My best guess is that they saw the 22nd already booked and rescinded the 11th (without informing you). Since the system has approved the cancellation you did for the 22nd, you do not have an appointment right now. So, mail them and explain in details everything as it happened and request for their assistance so you don't miss your deadline. Copy all the email addresses of theirs you can get. In parallel, email your school and ask for deadline extension as a back up plan. All the best |

Globalstamp: How did you get the interview date? Was it via the appointment portal or they replied you by email? Did you book an earlier appointment? If yes, what happened? Details will throw more light on the matter. Anyways, try to get another appointment via the portal and also try via email to the embassy (maybe they will reply with what the exact issue with today's appointment) All the best |

adudu208: Hello, it is not as simple as stated in the information document of schools. Let me assume you are female with kids and are going for M.Sc, asides your blocked account, you will be asked to block half of your BA per child and show plans for accommodation at your destination (so in total your BA plus another half of your BA for each child). If you are male and you are married with kids, you will be told to apply for family reunion when you get to Germany and this requires your wife to get A1 certificate from Geothe while you will be required to show funds enough to cater for their first year (half of BA per child plus full BA for the wife and an appropriate apartment to accommodate them). If you are going for P.hD, you can apply to move the family at the same time depending on the terms of the P.hD contract. If fully sponsored then they will be issued visa that even allows the wife to work full time. So yes it is possible but if you look closely, they stated that the right kind of visa must be applied for which is where the cog in the wheel is. Wish you the best 2 Likes |
