Well, Kiel that is now a bubbling and highly remunerating city had less than 10 Nigerian students most of whom only knew about one type of work that happens in Summer (we came in winter) and so had absolutely no information about what else was obtainable in the city. To make matters worse, I combed all the restaurants in the city asking for work in my pidgin german/english but they all wanted german speaking people.

All that we went through brought about the paradigm shift that ensured that no matter who you are, if you want to start earning money from the day you land in Kiel (if you have the power for work o ), it is now very possible.

Folks in other cities also experienced some hiccups at first.

It is different now, simply connect with people at the city you are headed and ask about work. Some places will have work waiting for you or at least give you an idea of where you will apply to and work first, then seek better offers later. Deliveroo and Foodora is an easy go to for most if you are athletic and can ride a bike.

So do not worry, so long as you plan ahead and talk to folks where you are headed, things have definitely eased up than 3years ago (just like BA went from 1.8m to almost 4m now )

Nipost is expensive now. When I went to post to China in February, I was given a bill of 7700 for what I normally post with less than 1k. I was told the price has been reviewed upward.

Your best bet is to go to the Nipost at the departure lounge of MMA and tell them you want to use registered mail. It is fast and sure.

Don't ever use EMS.!!! Bloody waste of money. If you are pressed for time just use DHL or FedEx.

Landed Germany in 2015 when the the trend just started and it took me and others 8months to earn my first Euro (blocked account Red), hustled and all but kept the faith. Today, I have the degree in hand and God has been really good .

@dolpaz got the brunt of the embassy and funding issues but today my man be getting accolades and offers left right and center. Man be balling. @Obiwann @Eke40Seven @nevilbot et al are varying case studies.

A lil advice for all who'll be heading to Deutschland in future:
Pls and don't come here on weekends, or better still don't leave Nigeria towards weekend (like Thursday or Friday); I really hear pepper.

I left our dear country on Thursday, missed my flight on transit, and had to spend an entire day at Turkish Airport (btw Turkish Airport is the most bubbling of all international airports I have been to).
All my funds were in my luggage, as well as my cards, so I was stranded, so I couldn't buy a new ticket, couldn't buy food, couldn't pay for Airport hotel, and couldn't go into town either.


My advice(s) in summary;
1.Leave on a Sunday,Monday, or Tuesday (at worse Wednesday), except u have your accomodation already sorted out and settled.
2.Load your Nigerian line, as much as you can; this saved my 'life'.
3.Pls hold some Euros, no matter how small, you can never tell (me myself, I never believed that all the things that have happened to me these past four days could ever happen to me)
4.Just a lil Deutsch, even if it is "Guten Tag", or "Hallo".

Pls and pls to those who have unblocked their Fintiba Account, how long does this take??
I opened an N26-Black Account(it comes with a monthly charge) back in Nigeria, and they've even sent my card, but I wasn't around to pick it, so it was returned. What else do I need to unblock my account? And how long exactly will it take?

I need to ask here, how and why did you miss the connecting flight? If it was that your flight from naija arrived late or for whatever reason, all you needed to have done is go to the Turkish Airline customer desk and explain to them. They would normally book you on the next flight out free of charge. If the next flight is still some hours away, they even give meal tickets that you can use to get food at the food stands in the airport. Such experiences abound on this thread (part 2 and 3).

Your naija bank cards will also work anywhere for withdrawals (rates might not be nice).

Never put your cash and cards in your main luggage. Have them in your carry on or wallet (that's its purpose). Immigration can't force you to part with nothing. It is your money and you are not father Christmas.

Planning is key when travelling to a new environment. Google map is your friend. Ask people the best way to get to where you need to be and let them know if you are coming on a weekday or weekend. Transportation frequency differs. Staying a hostel is quite expensive and so should be avoided unless you have absolutely no where to stay.

Why N26 black card? Been using N26 for up to 2 years and see zero value in the black card other than just gifting the bank money when the regular account does everything one needs.

No matter the type of question you have please ask. Better to ask and get varying responses you can learn from than to learn from your own mistakes.

The different recepient addresses for each program should tell you different sets of document are needed.

Hello guys, when coming, hold at least 400 euro. Its going to take about a week to open a bank account here and also you will need to get a semester ticket to move around to get stuff, this is around 170 euro (I missed my orientation week so I didn't know about this ticket, for 1 week I was enjoying free ride on buses, thinking it was free . I almost got caught a certain day, It was then realized). When you are caught by control the penalty is 60 euro. In the case you don't have enough cash to pay for semester ticket yet , you can pay directly to the bus driver around 1 - 3 euro per journey (just tell the driver where you are going, he will tell you the amount).

Also carry enough clothes when you coming. Its not as cheap as you think. I too miss eko market

Apps you might need :

1. DB navigator : for train
2. Google translate app : for translating your german documents to english (very very handy)
3. know the region you are in and download the transport app for that region: the app shows you the time your bus is going to arrive and bus stops. (makes life easy)
you can download myVRN app for (mannheim,heidelberg,ludwigshafen)
VVS app for (stuggart, essliengen)

If you want to do side jobs here, try to learn german before coming if not just mange your 720 euro.

GOODNEWS : Germany new immigration laws has given equal rights to both native German and foreign students/Job seekers i.e there is no longer a priority to check if a citizen or EU national might be able to take the job.

If you are going to live in a private apartment, better make it 1000euros because rent and caution alone will take more than 60%, enrollment fees (semester fees et al) will take some more.

P.S: You can always go around with your admission letter or enrollment certificate if you have that and most bus drivers will let you in for free. You should also get a pass with the controllers with this. Just make sure you get the ticket asap.

Yes you can. You can also get admitted to both programs as different admissions group review applications.

I believe the deadline you mean is for your enrollment. If this is the case, arm yourself with a letter saying you can still enroll or if you have another admission letter with a later enrollment deadline, go with that just in case.

So yes, you can go get your visa and have the above at hand just in case they ask.

Note that without a valid enrollment certificate of a school you would not be able to apply for a permit in Germany which then makes hustling difficult.

Why I said so is that some people without BA confirmation where issued AM and was told to submit their passport, insurance and BA confirmation.
Are you saying that in that case, if you submit passport and travel insurance then you will get your visa?

Yes, the visa will be issued. If the AM mail states to bring passport and insurance, that is all they need to issue visa whether or not BA confirmation or SL was provided. Why or what criteria they use for this is unknown, it just happens. As said, there will be no issuance of residence permit in Germany without SL or BA so that condition still needs to be met.

The Consulate in Nigeria states that visa application response takes 6-8 weeks so I really am at a loss as to why most of you are stressed about no response after 4 weeks! Yes, they do respond in less time and sometimes in a few days depending on whatever criteria they use but the norm is to wait till the said time before fretting.

I know enrollment deadlines and lack of early interview appointments make things harder but sometimes it is just profitable to watch and pray!

To guard against any issue, go do an affidavit deposed by the head of your family stating your full names (this is if your birth certificate doesn't carry one or both of the middle names). Have this at hand when you go for your interview so you can present it with copies if the need arises (will not be requested as part of the documentation.

Yes it will be in your account and used for your next application if it still covers the cost. Else you will be informed to pay whatever balance is left.

All he needs for admission is not full degree... He just needs transcript of the 3 years he have studied with other documents.

We had a visit from the verification officer last month and he said he had submitted his report to the embassy but we are yet to get the "verification completed"mail. It simply means you will apply for the Ausweis when you get to Germany to cover your period of study.

Is it to be ticked or left. My program duration is 3 and half yrs BA @ Soest.

Admission letters have been distributed at least 2 weeks ago. I will advise you email the international center and ask for the status of your application and if possible give you an email address to get a soft copy of the admission letter so you can proceed with visa application.

I know 2 people that already got theirs and we had to go to the office to push for it because they said they stopped sending soft copies and only send the original admission letter. The con of that is you have no clue if you got admitted or not because there is no portal for that.

So email them to first check your status and then try and force out a soft copy from them.

Well it depends nothing is cast in stone. I got mine way back 2015 in about 4weeks or so without any pushing and people got theirs in less time.

The best thing to do is to fund before interview and wait for the standard waiting period. If that period passes, send a mail to the alien's office in Kiel and I am sure you will see traction.

Passau is a very beautiful city though quite small and to be honest very little to expect in terms of jobs. Standard of living isn't as high as Bavaria though so better in that aspect. I have a friend in Passau that comes to Kiel to work during weeks when he is free (more than 12hrs bus ride, 7hrs by train).

Kiel is a bit better in terms of living cost and the fact that there is an active Nigerian students association there makes life easier for new comers. The guys on ground will also help you settle in quickly and may even find something to hold you work wise if the chance and time are right.

Not sure about Chemnitz as I have no info.

Check out Facebook pages of Nigerian scholars in Germany (country wide), Nigerian students in Kiel.

The universities also have Facebook pages so you can search out contacts from there too.

If I understand you correctly, you already have a masters. In this case, simply package your document and apply to uni-assist. You do not need to write any tests.

I arrived Frankfurt Germany Tuesday morning and got to kiel later in the afternoon by train. Thanks to guys in Kiel for receiving me and providing accomodation.
I flew Ethiopia airline to Frankfurt and connected Kiel by train with a train ticket already paid for through airline ticket booking. Frankfurt to Kiel cost me around #2,000 ( same for anywhere in Germany).

If you are coming to Germany and you are on a low bugdet like myself, you may want to book your arrival to QYG ( German rail and fly). 72 hours to your departure, you would be able to generate your online train ticket at DB website using your confirmed airline ticket number. This train ticket will take you to ANYWHERE in Germany from your arrival airport. It is valid till second day after your arrival. Check your airline booking itenary to know your final arrival airport in Germany.

Most airline agents in Nigeria do not know about this. Ethiopian airline staff at VI told me it is not possible.
I wrote and got a mail from Ethiopia airline frankfurt office who confirmed its possiblity.

I saved like #100k with this plan through Ethiopian airline.

Other airlines have the QYG,such as air maroc, etihad etc but Ethiopia seems the cheapest.

If you have much luggages. Please make sure your bags have tyres. It would help a lot. Also be prepared to pay €1 for trolley at Frankfurt airport in case you are landing here.

A copy of your admission letter should be in your hand luggage. You may have to show the immigration guys at point of entry.
