ODVanguard: Guy, you sound naive, I'm sorry. The last time a referendum took place in Nigeria was under the regional system, in 1963 to be precise, when the Mid-West decided to split from the then Western Region via a referendum. That '63 constitution made provision for and allowed for that referendum to hold. The current constitution does not (by design), and the real owners of Nigeria will not allow its insertion. It's not by mistake that ever since military incursion into Nigerian politics, similar acts in the form of state or local government creation were exclusively carried out by the military and by fiat, and not once has such been achieved under any civilian government since the collapse of the 1st republic -- because the real owners of Nigeria prefer a system that determines the distribution of federal revenue allocations based on population (which favours them & always works to their advantage) as opposed to resource control.
In other words, since the introduction of a unitary system and the current constitution by the military (in cohorts with the real owners of Nigeria) the Northern establishment has seen to it that the collective aspirations of Southerners (and to an extent, the Middlebelt) for a more equitable and truly federal system can hardly come to fruition. You must get their consent (which won't happen coz they know they have the numbers and will always use it to their advantage to thwart any move that they deem to be against their parasitic interests, be it resource control or what have you) to make any meaningful change to the current constitution imposed on us by the military.
- You can't have state creation without their expressed consent (they know that if you create additional states down South, you automatically create room for more lawmakers to balance the equation at the National Assembly).
- You can't create new local governments without their consent (if your state assembly creates them, they won't allow them to be funded)
- You can't generate and distribute electricity without their support
e.t.c.
Our Southern politicians representing us at the National Assembly have largely been compromised. And frankly, they still wouldn't succeed even if they moved (in unison) and attempt to address some of these issues coz they simply lack the numbers to push it through without the support of their Northern counterparts. Good points you made there. So how do we get ourselves out of the stranglehold of the North? We should get the Middlebelt on our side. That should give us the number to push through the Referendum and Restructuring bills in the National Assembly. We should also support the Christians in Southern Kaduna, Borno, Taraba and Adamawa to get more of them into the House and Senate. And we should stop fighting against each other in the South. We need to make good use of the education we claim to have acquired. |

HajimeSaito: Hopefully Yoruba Christians will wake up to the reality of how unreliable muslims are. They are snakes and traitors who want to allign themselves with their fellow Hausa fulani muslims in order to subjugate all Christians in Nigeria. You'll see that this clown will go scot free for his utterance. He'll never be charged with hate speech. Their useless evil religion has already laid down a master plan for them on global domination, but it won't work. Any religion founded by a pedophile illiterate fake " prophet " Sex Award Winner ( S.A.W ) will always attract idiots. I didn't read any hate speech in what the man said. Rather what I read is the Northern elites' strategy to thwart the effort by the South to have Nigeria restructured. The religion angle is an attempt to divide the SW and Middlebelt. He knows that if the SW, SE, SS, and Middlebelt unite, they will get their way. Those of us from the South and Middlebelt need to stop acting like fools. |

kaybams1: I took my time to listen to the man's position. Though filled with disguised self interest and bias, he made some valid points. First, some set of people cannot in any way decide the course of the Yoruba Nation. Who chose these guys to decide what Yoruba wants? This is how aristocracy starts. I am first a Yoruba before a Nigerian, yet I extremely believe in the strength of diversity. History has proved that to be the most potent tool of progress in other climes. However since other ethnic groups are not buying the marriage, I understand the urgency for everyone to claim what they can. But approach and motive matters a lot so it doesn't end up being a case of pouring old wines in new bottles.
Secondly, Yakasai asserted for a National Referendum to be embedded in our Constitution before such advocacy can be valid in the first place. That makes sense. We cannot thrive in disorder when we still have a social contract. The Constitution is what makes us a country in the first place. Any modifications to that should be done from the source for it to be valid. So let all these warring factions come together and put pressure on the National Assembly to input the clause in CLEARLY defined terms. Honestly, it beats me how we got to this point as a nation where we only filter news with our sentimental ears. Good point. There is no need to insult Yakassai. It is not a secret that the North are against restructuring, for obvious reasons. The present set-up favors them more than any other region. So I would not expect them to embrace restructuring. If I were them, I would also oppose it. Restructuring can only happen through the National Assembly. And the North holds a majority there. I have observed that the SE, SS, SW, and Middlebelt(North central) generally support restructuring. These groups will constitute a majority in the National Assembly. So what we need to do is to unite and present a common front and get the necessary bills passed which will give us restructuring and referendum. That is why I'm happy to see that SE and SS were represented at Ibadan. I wonder why Middlebelt was not their. The South have to use their brains just like the North always do. It's a mistake to underestimate the Fulani. There is a reason why they run things in the North and Nigeria. I believe they are the most intelligent ethnic group in Nigeria(my opinion). |

igbeke: I think it's high time the Yoruba Muslim leaders come out and unequivocally distance themselves from these utterances from Mr Yankassai.
The Yorubas I know very well are not divided by religion at all. They see themselves as one first before any form of religion they chose to incline to. That is why they can intermarry and still live together in harmony.
Despite the e-bashings we give ourselves here every day (which I am also guilty of), the average Yoruba Muslim is very well educated, peaceful and have no problem whatsoever with his christian counterpart.
Now, for a complete outsider who knows next to nothing about the Yorubas' esteemed culture to bring a religion as a yardstick of segregation among them is something I can't relate with. I guess you have become the spokesperson of Yoruba Muslims. |

ammyluv2002: We don't need to break up! Let's all settle our differences! FFK stop preaching break up to Nigerians, make all the points you want, but leave the issue of breaking up in it. So what happens if we can't settle our differences? It would be great if we can settle our differences and restructure the country to the satisfaction of the different sections of the country. But break up is always a possibility. Nigeria Is not a prison. There is nothing sacrosanct about Nigeria's unity. And that is why we should listen to every section of the country or else they would leave. Self determination is guaranteed by UN charter. |

On point. Right now, I believe Atiku would be the best candidate for this country come 2019. Like you I believe the North should be allowed to complete their two terms. And we don't need a tribalist as President of an ethnically diverse country like Nigeria. Another thing that impresses me about Atiku is his clear and unequivocal support for restructuring. He understands how important restructuring is for Nigerian progress. Even if Buhari is running in 2019, my support will be for Atiku. |

It was mainly because Jonathan was not tribalistic and did not single out the Igbos for discrimination. Stupid woman. Looks like you are the mumu. So the UK government prosecuted and jailed Ibori for the crimes he committed against the UK. You claim you were in court when he was sentenced. You even quoted the judge expressing the hope that Ibori will also face charges for his crimes against Nigeria. And yet Ibori is still walking around, a free man. Although Ibori had been freed earlier in an arranged trial by a shoddy and incompetent and corrupt EFCC, a government that is serious about fighting corruption should bring up new charges after learning from their mistakes. We get inundated every day with tales of Diezani's supposed corruption and yet the corrupt and incompetent Buhari administration cannot file charges against her and start the process of extraditing her from the UK. You are waiting for the UK to do the prosecution for you. |

seunmsg: Junaid is just an ethnocentric northerner who is angry that he's not relevant in the current political arrangement. His anger against Mamman Daura is simply because he refused people like him from having any influence and relevance in the Buhari government.
His hatred for the entire south cannot even be hidden. His criticism of Osinbajo's well balanced appointments says it all. To people like him, all political appointments must be from the North and no where else. His rants against Fashola is even more silly. Currently, over 60% of ongoing road construction in the country that Fashola inherited from Jonathan administration are in favour of the North. So, what point exactly is he trying to make?
So called political elders like Junaid Mohammed, Ango Abdullahi, Yakassai etc are senile old men who still think ethnocentrism should be elevated above statesmanship. Their time is up and they should shut up and stop poisoning the political space. And your President Buhari is a statesman, right? |
