You are wrong, churcch universities are taxed, I will assume that you are ignorant about that. It's the church itself that is now taxed. Covenant University is taxed heavily, being an entity registered and approved as a university, independent of the proprietary base or where ever funds were sourced from to establish, that I know of and I don't think it will be a different case for any other faith based institution!

I'd love more elucidation on this cos all my research doesn't reflect what you've stated here. Educational institutions are categorized as proprietary educational institution(for profit) and not-for-profit educational institutions which most educational institutions owned by faith based missions fall or register under,I.e,they are companies with limited guarantee. They pay some form of taxes though, like employees in such not-for-profit educational institutions have their personal income tax being deducted, they also pay VAT and some other form of taxes to the state but their incomes as an institution are not taxed.

So churches should be taxed for the cost of their schools even after the schools are taxed. What are you saying sef? Elaborate please.
google is your best friend but lemme educate you a little, churches are being considered as public entities,as such when they go into providing education, such investments are not taxed like they would have been if they were considered private companies but suffice to add that employees still pay personal income tax from their salaries. There has been this long standing argument for and against the taxation of churches or faith based organizations in Nigeria as it's being done elsewhere as soon as churches branch out of being just charitable organizations to establishing investments that make profits. You would agree that most churches in our time don't have the kind of structure of orthodox churches which is clearly outlined without self succession but you'd agree many new Pentecostal churches start off with one person who establishes his church and grows to establish many branches with offerings, tithes and donations after which they branch out to other investments. Imagine if church property and prime real estate built in large expanses of land called churches were to be taxed,it would be a lot of revenue for govt but any efforts to do so is always met with opposition as many claim church goers are already being taxed as such donations they make to churches shouldn't be taxed again as it would amount to double taxation.

Why are you so shamelessly propagating discrimination. So because something wrong is being done everywhere, it means your u should also follow to do it. Then what the fvck does the church stand for if it openly discriminates between members and non members.
Asking the value they've added to our educational system. Honestly I dunno what to say to you.

Typical Nigerian. You'll say the school is rubbish but you still complain about the fees. If they're only "slightly" better than government run uni's, then why don't you just leave em alone and go to the government run uni's instead?

If you haven't ever attended both a private institution and a public institution, then how do you expect tounderstand the difference between them?
you don't have to delve into personal attack if you can't figure points to counter my argument. Now if according to your argument that tithes and offerings are not enough to run the schools, then the pragmatic approach will be to charge tuition but my argument is that it shouldn't be priced out of reach of members that wish to send their wards there,if you've problems with the word discrimination then you can substitute it with benefits, that is,paying a slightly reduced tuition should be one of the benefits of being an active member. Talking about what the church stands for,it should be about preaching and propagating the gospel while helping members both morally, spiritually and finacially when necessary to keep their faith and live holy lives but when the church goes out of its major purpose to fulfill a need which is lacking in society like providing education then it shouldn't be done with profit in mind, exorbitant fees being charged by schools owned by missions gives credence to calls for churches to be taxed, think about it

Taking Care Of The ND Region
1.Min of ND.
2.Amnesty Programme.
3.NDDC.
4.Derivation fund.
5.Special consideration for employment and scholarship.
6.Royalties.
All these were initiated for the development of the north, I guess. As God will have it, all these agencies were/are headed by ndeltans. If this is not sufficient, then the endless agitation has a different motive.

Quota System.
Such is applied in employment into government parastatals everywhere, not only in Nigeria. Besides, mention agencies headed by the northerners that have performed below expectation in comparison to those headed by southerners. (Facts and figures pls, not just a blanket statement).
Relatively, few northerners may be educated but even if they are to be employed to fill their quota, it is only those educated ones that are chosen. In terms of productivity, I'm a northerner and most of my colleagues are easterners (university graduates as well) but I'm telling you, I assist a good number of them in their assigned tasks. Most of them cannot even write in good English, so what is ur point?

Social Vices.
Nobody is saying all southerners are miscreants, but we all know where their headquarters are located. But the main issue is; if the northerners were easily indoctrinated into deadly religious extremism because of poor education, what is the source of indoctrination to the 'educated' south into all the earlier listed social vices which are also deadly?
Yes you're right about all the interventionist schemes set up for the Niger delta but they came a little too late,if we'd continued with the regional system where regions kept as much as 50% of proceeds from their resources, the Niger delta won't be as it is now, even if it was just the 13% derivation that was implemented at inception, things would have been a lot better there. It took the agitation of Saro Wiwa and the likes before government did the needful when democracy returned in 1999 but monitoring has also been a challenge cos the oil companies always found a way to not deliver their corporate social obligations fully seeing they could easily settle a few chiefs who kept quiet in spite of the degradation taking place there.

On the quota issue, like I mentioned earlier,it was implemented to accommodate the northerners but it has become a nation wide problem as many find themselves in positions they are not really qualified for having passed through a watered down education system where standards have been greatly lowered. You may be a few of the lucky ones who know their onions and are worthy of the positions they occupy but I assure you for every one of your kind from up north, there are countless ones from the south who got shut out from occupying same positions because of where they are from, what's fair about that?

On the vices issues yet again,it's a consequence of urbanization but a good and effective government knows how to keep such in check. When people are educated or at least literate but can't find work to do in big cities, they may resought to crime, This is why a government is rated by how low unemployment rate is,crimes will always be with us but government through its organs and agencies always aim to keep it at the barest minimum.

Their tuition being high is a relative thing. Most of these schools are just finding their feet. For people to even start comparing them to our public institutions that have been in existence for decades is a great achievement talk more of comparing them to international institutions. The good private unis in Nigeria are holding their own. They have gone a long way in so little time.
You say catholic, Anglican schools are free? Don't be deceived. They used to get serious fundings from abroad in those days. Now that most of these schools (I'm talking of their secondary schools) are self funding, their fees are also higher.
Most of the private unis are indigenous home grown faith based. Built from scratch. There's no mother church abroad anywhere.
Give credit where its due.
If you see anything good functioning anywhere, its because money is being spent on it. Tithes and offerings cannot sustain these schools. Some schools run businesses like pure water, , printing etc. It only makes sense to get money from extra sources to be self sustaining. I remember unilag was the first uni to think outside the box and start generating money from pure water, soap etc businesses. They didn't wait for the fed govt. Others have followed suite. Why you feel faith based schools cannot run businesses to meet the needs if their community, and also generate income at the same time beggars belief.
Churches running businesses to sustain themselves shows that tithe and offerings are not enough. Even the old churches church of England- Anglican, Catholic, methodist have always had business interests. They have being worth billions since time immemorial. They are not being run by tithes and offerings.
Arguments like yours tend to justify people who call for churches to be taxed. I never mentioned anglican in my submission rather I said if the catholic church decided to set up their own private university in Nigeria,it won't cost an arm and a leg before parents would be able to send their wards there,no one says it should be free but if other private universities are charging say 1.5 million a session for a particular course, members shouldn't have to pay up to that if they enrolled their wards, that exactly is my point. No one is saying private universities aren't serving their purpose but they shouldn't make much noise for now until they make the best 1000 universities list considering the heavy tuition they are charging, much more is demanded from them in form of output and impact, not just the world class infrastructure they keep boasting about in their brochures.
Education / Re: Why Church Universities Are Expensive by princejenks(m): 12:00pm On Feb 12, 2017

Do you know that your idea promotes discrimination. You're saying members of a church should pay lower than those outside. Why?
So someone can just change church just because he wants to get lower fees. Please don't go there. That idea is flawed. So even children who don't really care about their education should be pumped into the University just because they attend a particular church. When the standard of the school falls, it's still you people that will point fingers.
It is enough that scholarships are given to members. Anything aside that is outright criminality.
The same goes to your idea of Catholic private universities.

Now to your more salient points. Webometrics isn't just based on IT compliance. But let me not go there. You said private universities are not in the top 1000 in the world. How many public Universities are in the top 1000? None. Not even UI. So that is not really a point for argument.
According to their latest rankings, UI is first in Nigeria, Covenant second. That shows you how far Covenant has come throughout the years.

The truth of the matter is that your only problem with private universities is their fees, and the truth remains that no private university can be run without adequate funding. You will not find any private university anywhere in the world that is cheap (except the standard is low).
In the US, people save money which they call a college fund to be able to send their children to good schools, some of which are privately run. But here in Nigeria, no saving, you just send them to a school with 30k per semester. The problem is that the schools are not properly funded.
You pay more for quality.
pls, do indigenes and non indigenes pay the same fees in state universities? Each church have their criteria of vetting who is a member and who isn't,so changing churches for that purpose shouldn't distract from the main issue here which is high tuition. I never said it's compulsory for each member to send their wards to schools being run by their churches but their membership should be reflected in the tuition they'd be made to pay if they sent them there, the scholarship thing is like a drop in the pack for now. Google is your best friend on webometrics but I still stand on my point that in spite of the much noise they make about investing billions in infrastructure and teaching aids, they have only fared slightly better than government run institutions in spite of the exorbitant tuition they are charging,it calls to question the value they are really adding to our educational system.

Pls, which region is being spoonfed? Pls don't mention nd oil cos the ndeltans are not working for it. Also, if the north has lapses in education, how does that stop the south from "progressing"? Pls name one of ur educational advancement that was pulled backward because of lapses in education in the north.
Many people are not involved in those vices u say? Go and say that to the marines. Pls name one southern state in which u can go to the bank, withdraw 1million, then WALK home. If the reports of rituals hitting news headlines (actually grossly under reported) is still less, then clap for urself. Is there any street u don't have ashawo joint? If all these are still few, then the north is not interested in ur "progress". Drugs and human trafficking everyday, yahoo boys everywhere, kidnapping like water, yet these people are few, choi, nawao!
Normally, I don't go into needless argument especially on issues that are so obvious but you seem a bit enlightened so I would give it a try. Now first of,you mentioned Niger delta not working for the oil ,yes that's true but for the fact that it's in their backyards, they are entitled to the proceeds from the sale of it to develop their land. If you have travelled outside this country or even read about places where oil are being drilled, you'll realize the owners of the land or its initial inhabitants are always well taken care of but in our own case,we didn't get it right at inception, the reason we are being confronted with continuous agitation from that region till date. I know many folks from the north would be quick to deny this, but the bending over to accommodate the region in the scheme of things by lowering standards through introduction of such things as catchment areas and quota system has seen merit thrown out the window and with it has seen persons who are not very qualified manning very important sectors including education and we can see how it has impacted all over the country. To answer your question directly, the privileged ones from the north who have benefited from this lop sided system have made sure the country can only move at the pace of the weakest link so no matter how other regions try to move, their movement is being curtailed in a way by the instruments of government which are in the tight control of northerners who occupy every critical positions in any area you can think, the reason why certain recommendations that could move the country as a whole forward but viewed as anti north never see the light of day. On the vices issue, seems you didn't get my point,I never said many people weren't in it but what I meant was that it is not right to say the whole population is involved in it,that can't be true by any length of imagination besides how come the whole population has not been killed or kidnapped if the whole south is filled of ritual killers and armed robbers if we are to follow your line of reasoning? Speaking of vices, maybe you're living in denial but even right here in the north that am residing, they have their own brand,at least I know of hard drugs abuse which is very rampant here and you and I know the consequences of drug addiction.

Let us be fair. The unis ranking top 1000 in the world have all being there for decades, or even 100s of years.
The faith based schools in Nigeria just started. Non is up to 20years old. They have come a long way, and I'm proud of some specific ones who have proved themselves that they have a good mgt team in place, and can only get better.
Let us also be honest with ourselves, tithes and offerings cannot sustain these schools. How many indigent people really pay the tithes and offering? Someone that has no money to even feed, and you're talking of tithes and offering? Is it not the money you have that you will put down?
I know indigent people who have gone to CU, on scholarships. Because they are indigent, and also deserving. Deserving in the sense that they have a good academic record. That's the way scholarships should be given anyway.
I know a lot of churches that verify the help they give through the home fellowship system. If you're not an active member of the home fellowship, then you're not considered a true member. The home fellowship is such that its a small gathering of members usually as small as 5-20, that come to worship together and can even raise help amongst themselves. If that's not possible, and you need help, your home cell fellowship leader can verify you with the church, that you've been an active member for long.
Its a better system, as a lot of people can get lost in the crowd of the main church.
Many don't realise this. The church leaders aren't clairvoyant. If you need help, or envisage you may need help in the future look for your church's home cell fellowship around you and start being active there now. Let them know you. That's one of the easiest ways they use in knowing their members.
I know this because I've observed closely, from afar how some of these systems work.
let's call a spade wot it is,these private universities being run by missions have priced tuition over and above the reach of their members,I even hear some of these private universities have other profitable business ventures they run along side. You talked about these private universities being under 20 years old,the reason they are not in top 1000 best universities in the world but my answer to that is this, the rankings are based on webometrics which these private universities use as selling point, that is,they are IT complaint, yet can't make the list. This greatly calls to question what value they are really adding to the system of education in Nigeria cos beyond being devoid of strikes and having a few infrastructure to boast of,their personnel are still heavily being sourced from the government run institutions. We won't be needing private universities if government was properly funding the ones they are managing cos elsewhere in the world, and even here in nigeria,it's the not so bright students who can't pass entrance exams to government run higher institutions that flood private universities but here we are now making it a status symbol to send our wards there killing off our education gradually. Am still on my point that these private universities should charge discriminary fees for members, that talk of merit doesn't hold water,if you pass the entrance exams to such schools you're good enough, then such child of a member should be made to pay less fees than non members;this is why I doff my hat for catholics, though not one,but I know the day they decide to set up a private university,it will not only be world class but Catholics would pay almost nothing to have their wards there

Pls what indoctrinated the ritualists, oloshos, armed robbers, drug and human traffickers, cultists, kidnappers etc in the "most educated regions"?
see, each region in the country have their peculiar needs, lumping up regions together in this feeding bottle federalism we are practising in this country and forcing everyone to move at the same rate has not worked and won't work in the foreseeable future cos some regions would be left behind no matter how they try to stifle the progressive ones. Now to the north, its peculiar need right now is education, previous leaders from that region ,for whatever reasons, felt that to keep the people there under their tight grip, they must be denied education. Just check wot Awo did for the west,he gave them a headstart by giving his region free education, same with zik but the civil war drove the east behind but in the last 20 years, due to concerted efforts, the east has caught up and even overtaking others in education;you can check the results of major exams being written in this country to know which region is topping. Even the likes of Emir Sanusi and governor Tambuwal of sokoto have seen the light and have been encouraging their people to embrace western education to fill the obvious gap their lack of it has caused the region as a whole. To answer your question directly, the vices you mentioned are as a result of bad governance cos if government is doing its work well through its organs,it would have curtailed such vices to the barest minimum cos the number of people engaged in it is far less than the overall population so your analogy here is off cos in the north, the reverse is the case, too many uneducated folks with less skills is a disaster in waiting for manipulative hands

op missed the point, whether tithes or donations, the money came mostly from the congregation so they should be considered in determining the tuition I.e they should be made to pay like one thirds the amount they would have charged non members rather than this token scholarship grants they hand out to some members whose wards attend such mission schools. Speaking of quality, with all the money being sunk into these private universities to build start of the art infrastructure, how come none of them is found in the top 1000 universities in the world? Why are they not driving inventions and innovations outside of the school environment, why is Nigeria not leading Africa in IT for example, with all that's being put in to provide world class teaching in these private universities?
