Kobojunkie:Since putting someone on a no fly list involves the exercise of some form of discretion, a reputable father who informed the U.S. embassy of his son's radicalized behavior should have been more than enough info to warrant them to put his name on the no fly list. Nevertheless, even if his name was not placed on the no fly list, the fact that his name was on a database of those suspected to have ties to Al Qaeda should have been enough for them to subject him to a more stringent search such as explosive-swipe test, back scatter search (it gives a unclothed x-ray image of your body which would reveal the most concealed object on one's body), or an exhaustive pat down. Clearly, since placing him on the no fly list involves the exercise of discretionary power, reasonable minds could differ as to what constitutes an imprudent exercise of that discretion. The United States Dept. of Homeland Security has conceded that the system failed, and the information should have been utilized more prudently. |
Because of a treaty obligation, the United States will allow a Nigerian Consulate to meet with the alleged terrorist and discuss with him. If I were the Nigerian consulate and knowing of my diplomatic immunity status in the U.S., I would first of all give that useless boy a dirty slap for bringing shame to Nigeria and doing something that is out of character to ordinary Nigerians, particularly since he has a privileged background. |
Moi Moi and suya all day err day |
Amaka, I believe you are right about the influence of MTV and other Western TV shows on Nigerian culture, though. Also your pastor should be fired. lol |
Amaka, I don't know you started listening to Naija music, but I really doubt the sound will change to being like American. The reason is that the first generation of contemporary Naija music, mid 90s to early 2000s sounded like American, like it was almost a clone of American music, and it flopped heavily, locally and internationally. Nigerians did not embrace and, of course, foreigners did not embrace it also. Later, artists started using more indigenous beats heavily laced with pidgin and mostly Yoruba and sometimes Ibo, and the music has now become popular because of its authenticity. So I doubt that artists will revert back to a style--the American style-- that have been proven not to work. That will be plain silly, and Nigerians are not that silly. Also can you name specifically 3 popular artists that you think their song sounds too American. |
THE.AMAKA:Amaka, I beg to differ. While you are right that some Naija artists do make music that sounds like the Western style, the most successful ones usually use, say Yoruba and Pidgin and Ibo, to communicate on their songs. I really don't think Naija Music generally sounds too American; most of them have a distinct style that is now being a patently Naija tune. |
The interest in foreign culture--American culture particularly--is increasing not only because of MTV but also the popularity of DSTV. |
At least if Maryam is publicly criticized and ridiculed after her death, the likes of Ibrahim Babangida, Baba Iyabo and Co, and the other thieves will have a feel of what people will say about them when they die! |
koolchicco:Please rephrase your statement. "You" not "We" are here to mourn. Some folks are here to celebrate the passing of the wife who, alongside her husband, embezzled Nigeria's funds, annulled a free and fair election, and presided over a regime during which the Naira depreciated seriously, the inflation rate ballooned to over 1000%, and many more disasters; in short, they screwed up Nigeria. The more the vestiges of Nigeria's dictatorial past continue to die, the better we can move on and rebuild a better Nigeria. God Bless Nigeria and its citizens. |
Obiakara:The US embassy approved his multiple U.S. visa before his father notified the U.S. embassy in Abuja of his son's strange and radicalized behavior. With regards to issue of whether the U.S. embassy in the UK would have discovered the information known to the U.S. embassy in Abuja, the issuing embassy should not have to contact the embassy in the home state of the applicant to be informed of such important information. The U.S. embassy in the U.K. usually has access to the database of suspect travelers. The threshold question is why did the U.S. allow him to fly despite the fact that the father informed the U.S. embassy last month of his son's radicalized behavior and plans to "do something" against the U.S.? And even if allowed to fly, why was he not subject to more stringent security measures such as a strip search or a bomb scan or reverse-scatter scanning? Somebody dropped the mutha f'ing ball. |
carago:Your comment has innuendos of jealousy, envy, hate, and animosity against Nigerians. Nigeria is still the giant of Africa. For instance, the success of Nigeria's movie industry, music industry, and popularity of its culture and language has caused other Africans to envy Nigeria and Nigerians. I will petition Seun to ban all Ghanaians from coming to Nairaland. Take your behind to Cediland if it exists. |
Lagosboy:What about the Kaduna and Kano riots, where muslims killed thousands of Christian, because of the Northern Muslims disapproved of the crusade of Evangelist Reinhard Bonnke? Were those killings based on Tribalism? |
While Muslims can deny it all day long, there are numerous verses in the Quran that explicitly support violence. During the Battles of Badr, Uhud, and the Battle of the Trench, where Muslims fought against the enemies, Prophet Muhammad ordered Muslims to fight, and Prophet Muhammad used verses from the Quran to justify the fight by Muslims. Muslims generally are prone to violence and will fight a Jihad; the main difference between moderate and extreme Muslims, in my own view, is that the extremists, for example, will decide that a U.S. foreign policy favoring Israel is an attack on Islam, even though there is a tenuous connection between a U.S. foreign policy favoring Israel and an attack on Islam. Moderate Muslims, on the other hand, want the act of the "infidels" to be somewhat more directly against Islam before they will join the fight against the "infidels." The Islamic faith imposes on every Muslim an implied obligation to fight a Jihad against the enemy, the "infidels." Christianity does not sanction violence to be used as an act of reprisal under any circumstances. As a matter of fact, the principles that underlie the Christian faith provide that Christians should leave retaliation unto God; that is, if someone slaps your right cheek, gladly turn the left cheek to a position to receive another dirty slap. |
This is a wake up call to all Nigerians. Those who commit illegal activities such as 419, drug-trafficking, and all the other activities known to be committed by Nigerians must stop committing those illegal activities. Those who do not commit those activities should be citizen police officers by reporting the Cyber Cafes at which these 419ers operate. We must all work together to repair Nigeria's tarnished image. |
Na waa for these Malos; they don phuck up Naija |
Paroh_frey:You came out obviously from a HIV infected pu ssy! Your pr ostitute as s mother is the one who gives head and phucks those terrorists before they blow themselves. Your father is on the line to blow himself so he can phuck some virtual virgins. He has stopped phucking your mother's HIV infected pu ssy |
mubaraqqq:I beg to differ. People have every right to express their opinion and do not have to speak with one voice. The problem with Nigeria is not because we need to put our differences aside and speak with one voice, but that people try to prevent other people from expressing differing views, or they attack the character of the speaker when in disagreement with the dissident. |
Paroh Frey Explain yourself |
grafikdon:I have never met an Ibo Muslim. But if anyone thinks an Ibo Muslim will not fight a Jihad is delusional. This Islam folks view the world in a different lens than the rest of us, which means that they will support their religion by all costs including but not limited to fighting a Jihad. |
Aloy~Emeka:I concur. This one is beyond the scope of Dora. |
freed:And we are Naija, a nation and citizen already bedeviled by the image of 419, drug-trafficking, and corruption! |
The Northerners want to practice Sharia Law; your president goes to Saudi to receive treatment; your president will go to the launching of a Saudi University rather than represent his country in the United Nations; an Islamic Northerner has visited Yemen to receive training. Naija should split! |
The Northerners have shown that they do not want to abide by the Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. They want to practice Sharia Law. So can some Malo give me a compelling reason why Nigeria should stay united when those Islamic, Northern Malos do not follow the Constitution but practice Saudi type Sharia Law. |
Pataki:You are right. Yaradua, a Malo, will go to Saudi for treatment rather than travel to the most sophisticated Western hospital. It is that same Muslim alliance, and that alliance trumps any fidelity to one's Nationality. Some of those Islamic, Northern Malos would even join Alqaeda to fight against Nigeria. Remember that a USA citizen who converted to Islam joined the Taliban in fighting against the United States. Nigeria should split. The North should join Alqeda and Osama Bin Laden. I h ave had enough. |
It is the Yoruba and Ibos and all the subtribes who will suffer from the stereotype that will arise out of this incident. Those Malos rarely travel out of Nigeria anyway so harm to them will be minimal. |
The sad part is the Nigerian government lacks enough backbone to go to the North and weed out all those Al qaeda Malos! The Emirs and the Sultan will probably interfere with government efforts aimed at obliterating Alqaeda faithfuls in the North. Those Emirs may even be on the payroll of Osama Bin Laden. |
@ paroh Frey: I refuse to insert your quote because of its unnecessary large and bold font. The difference is that the Niger Delta "terrorists" direct their attack against their enemies head on, leaving no room to harm innocent unconcerned and unsuspecting people. These Islamic terrorists, on the other hand, are willing to kill innocent people, however many, just to further their cause! Why kill innocent people? |
mbulela:The average Nigerian from the South, West, and East maybe! But those Islamic Northerners don't give a damn about giving their lives for their Islamic Religion. The Islamic Northerners who are willing to start a Holy war against Christians in the North (of course using Islamic religion as the Impetus) are willing to give their lives for the sake of religion. Can't you remember all the Religious riots perpetrated against Christians in the North? |
No2Atheism:I guess the principles that underlie Islam give enough wiggle room for extremists to use for committing violence against innocent people. Moderate muslims need to proactively join the fight against extreme Islam. |
