If you agree that Cecilia Ibru is TRUSTWORTHY and HONEST( Reputable).

You are using a strawman style argument here. My point is that when someone of his caliber comes to the U.S. embassy to inform you of the radicalized behavior of his own son, and his son's intent of planning something dangerous, it should be taking more seriously.  I never said his statement should be conclusive of his son's behavior but should definitely be giving substantial weight.

I think you need to direct that question at your own self here.  Someone pointed out earlier that even folks with drugs strapped on the same way will likely be detected during the NORMAL SECURITY SEARCH, so again, why was this not detected? I believe that is a valid question to ask oneself.

How do you know if that "someone" who pointed earlier that drugs strapped the same way would have been detected during the normal security search is an expert or knows what he is saying. Again, even if it should have been detected under normal routine, it does not negate the proposition that he should not have been subject to a heightened search, since they were aware of his radicalized behavior.

The above points to his possibly not even having this on him FROM NIGERIA, and it is possible he had it AFTER being searched.

Again, this is possible, which is why the govt. is trying to investigate fully the possible security breach.

What?  Let us not TRIVIALIZE this now!! You assume there that I even eat food served me by strangers that I ain’t paying for.

Yes. Whether you are paying for the food or not. If  you own a restaurant and the father of someone informs you that a paying customer wants to come and rob you at night, I would hope that you would be extra cautious in observing that when that customer walks into your restaurant at night, or if possible deny service to that customer as long as it is within dictates of the law. Here, the govt. could have legally revoked his visa or denied him entry to the U.S., or at the very least subject him to a heightened search.

Reputable in what sense? Aren’t we LEAPING TOO FAR here?

The guy's father--Alhahi Mutallab is a reputable man -- former Chairman of UBA and First Bank of Nigeria, Plc. Isn't that reputbale?

Again, I will ask you the questions I have asked the other before you.

How do you know he was not subjected to more Stringent search? I mean seriously, how do you know this? How do you know he even had the BOMB on him while he was being searched?

The authorities in Nigeria and Amsterdam have stated that he underwent normal security procedures and was not subject to heightened security procedures. Which one be your own?
My problem is it is possible people think Al-Qaida does not do it’s homework at all. I am certain they know that a search of individuals at the airport, especially after 9/11 would probably reveal anything the person is carrying.  Was alquida dumb enough to leave the detection of this bomb to chance?

Agreed but that still does not mean they could have averted this no matter how perfectly they tried.

Al Qaeda did their homework, but the U.S. was fortunate enough to have a father who gave them info about his son's plan. It does not get better than that, being informed of a potential terrorist attack by a guy who was on your list, and who was not subject to a heightened search. Come on don't argue against yourself. So if someone's family told you that their family member was going to poison you, won't you exercise caution in eating food that was prepared by that person?

Kobojunkie:
You are NOT answering the question but just putting forth the same VAGUE info are reason for assertions you have made so far.

We have been told there was no solid info to support his being on a No-fly list. That his father reported him missing is NO SOLID evidence to have him on a NO FLY List so why demand he should have been doubly checked just for that in the way you have so far?

Note: I edited my initial post

here is what I have so far on when he came on the US watchlist.  . .

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34592031
Since putting someone on a no fly list involves the exercise of some form of  discretion, a reputable father who informed the U.S. embassy of his son's radicalized behavior should  have been more than enough info to warrant them to put his name on the no fly list. Nevertheless, even if his name was not placed on the no fly list, the fact that his name was on a database of those suspected to have ties to Al Qaeda should have been enough for them to subject him to a more stringent search such as explosive-swipe test, back scatter search (it gives a unclothed x-ray image of your body which would reveal the most concealed object on one's body), or an exhaustive pat down. Clearly, since placing him on the no fly list involves the exercise of discretionary power, reasonable minds could differ as to what constitutes an imprudent exercise of that discretion.

The United States Dept. of Homeland Security has conceded that the system failed, and the information should have been utilized more prudently.

Because of a treaty obligation, the United States will allow a Nigerian Consulate to meet with the alleged terrorist and discuss with him. If I were the Nigerian consulate and knowing of my diplomatic immunity status in the U.S., I would first of all give that useless boy a dirty slap for bringing shame to Nigeria and doing something that is out of character to ordinary Nigerians, particularly since he has a privileged background.

Amaka, I believe you are right about the influence of MTV and other Western TV shows on Nigerian culture, though. Also your pastor should be fired. lol
CultureRe: Declining Interest In Nigerian Culture! What Is Responsible? by Princek12(m): 4:53pm On Dec 28, 2009
Amaka, I don't know you started listening to Naija music, but I really doubt the sound will change to being like American. The reason is that the first generation of contemporary Naija music, mid 90s to early 2000s sounded like American, like it was almost a clone of American music, and it flopped heavily, locally and internationally. Nigerians did not embrace and, of course, foreigners did not embrace it also. Later, artists started using more indigenous beats heavily laced with pidgin and mostly Yoruba and sometimes Ibo, and the music has now become popular because of its authenticity.

So I doubt that artists will revert back to a style--the American style-- that have been proven not to work. That will be plain silly, and Nigerians are not that silly. Also can you name specifically 3 popular artists that you think their song sounds too American.

THE.AMAKA:
i do see your point.
youre gonna need facts to back that up.
i have to disagree because most of these naija artist (even though the ones you named were cool)of today are becoming TOOO WESTERNIZED. people need to stick to how 2face was when he first came out.
some of the latest naija music sounds too american and i wouldnt even know it was by a naija artist if i heard it on the radio or something.
i was just thinking about this the other day.
even though our musicians are nigerian doesnt mean they are sticking to "naija style" type of music.
i can't believe some of the garbage coming out these days.
i can't listen to naija music thats too westernized cause it doesnt seem authentic or original.
Amaka, I beg to differ. While you are right that some Naija artists do make music that sounds like the Western style, the most successful ones usually use, say Yoruba and Pidgin and Ibo, to communicate on their songs. I really don't think Naija Music generally sounds too American; most of them have a distinct style that is now being a patently Naija tune.

The interest in foreign culture--American culture particularly--is increasing not only because of MTV but also the popularity of DSTV.

Please rephrase your statement. "You" not "We" are here to mourn. Some folks are here to celebrate the passing of the wife who, alongside her husband, embezzled Nigeria's funds, annulled a free and fair election, and presided over a regime during which the Naira depreciated seriously, the inflation rate ballooned to over 1000%, and many more disasters; in short, they screwed up Nigeria.

The more the vestiges of Nigeria's dictatorial past continue to die, the better we can move on and rebuild a better Nigeria. God Bless Nigeria and its citizens.

it's not about confirming your stories properly, if the UK embassy is giving out a visa for non UK residents, the embassy would have to do a background check from the applicants home country in this case they will laise with the embassy in nigeria, if they had done it properly, they would have noticed that this individual is listed as a terror suspect.
e
The US embassy approved his multiple U.S. visa before his father notified the U.S. embassy in Abuja of his son's strange and radicalized behavior. With regards to issue of whether the U.S. embassy in the UK would have discovered the information known to the U.S. embassy in Abuja, the issuing embassy should not have to contact the embassy in the home state of the applicant to be informed of such important information. The U.S. embassy in the U.K. usually has access to the database of suspect travelers.

The threshold question is why did the U.S. allow him to fly despite the fact that the father informed the U.S. embassy last month of his son's radicalized behavior and plans to "do something" against the U.S.? And even if allowed to fly, why was he not subject to more stringent security measures such as a strip search or a bomb scan or reverse-scatter scanning? Somebody dropped the mutha f'ing ball.

Your comment has innuendos of jealousy, envy, hate, and animosity against Nigerians. Nigeria is still the giant of Africa. For instance, the success of Nigeria's movie industry, music industry, and popularity of its culture and language has caused other Africans to envy Nigeria and Nigerians. I will petition Seun to ban all Ghanaians from coming to Nairaland. Take your behind to Cediland if it exists.

I do appreciate your understanding and valid points you raised.

90% of the religious riots have been carried out by illiterate mobs who just go on a form of rampage after some foolish politicians have doled out somtheing. Development of the northern rural areas and good education is key to solving those riots . Note that thos riots are different to terrorism as we can see terrorism is mostly carried out be highly educated guys like Attah Phd and a MBA holder like George Bush. Zawahiri is medical doctor and Cheney is an accomplished corporate leader.

Killing of fellow Nigerians i always condemn and it is more to do with tribalism than religion in my opinion. When Abiola died OPC went on killing rampage of hausas in lagos. Note that most of those OPC members will have been muslims by birth or name but the hatred for the hausas is soleley on tribe. Same goes to the hausas in the north , some of them kill yoruba muslims as well.

To the Palestinian Afghanistan and so on issues, these are international issues that can onlybe solved internationally. Nigerians can have an opinion and a foreign policy but this should never lead to killings on the streets .

Back to the arsenal game buddie
What about the Kaduna and Kano riots, where muslims killed thousands of Christian, because of the Northern Muslims disapproved of the crusade of Evangelist Reinhard Bonnke? Were those killings based on Tribalism?
PoliticsRe: Nigerian Man Attempts To Detonate Explosive On Delta Flight In US by Princek12(m): 4:02pm On Dec 27, 2009
While Muslims can deny it all day long, there are numerous verses in the Quran that explicitly support violence. During the Battles of Badr, Uhud, and the Battle of the Trench, where Muslims fought against the enemies, Prophet Muhammad ordered Muslims to fight, and Prophet Muhammad used verses from the Quran to justify the fight by Muslims. Muslims generally are prone to violence and will fight a Jihad; the main difference between moderate and extreme Muslims, in my own view, is that the extremists, for example, will decide that a U.S. foreign policy favoring Israel is an attack on Islam, even though there is a tenuous connection between a U.S. foreign policy favoring Israel and an attack on Islam.

Moderate Muslims, on the other hand, want the act of the "infidels" to be somewhat more directly against Islam before  they will join the fight against the "infidels." The Islamic faith imposes on every Muslim an implied obligation to fight a Jihad against the enemy, the "infidels." Christianity does not sanction violence to be used as an act of reprisal under any circumstances. As a matter of fact, the principles that underlie the Christian faith provide that Christians should leave retaliation unto God; that is, if someone slaps your right cheek, gladly turn  the left cheek to a position to receive another dirty slap.

This is a wake up call to all Nigerians. Those who commit illegal activities such as 419, drug-trafficking, and all the other activities known to be committed by Nigerians must stop committing those illegal activities. Those who do not commit those activities should be citizen police officers by reporting the Cyber Cafes at which these 419ers operate. We must all work together to repair Nigeria's tarnished image.

Thank you. Like I said before, Nigeria is doomed because of attitudes  like this. How can we stand together when we cannot even put our differences aside for one second and talk with one voice about an issue like this.  This thread is a microcosm of the problem in Nigeria.
I beg to differ. People have every right to express their opinion and do not have to speak with one voice. The problem with Nigeria is not because we need to put our differences aside and speak with one voice, but that people try to prevent other people from expressing differing views, or they attack the character of the speaker when in disagreement with the dissident.

The Northerners have shown that they do not want to abide by the Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. They want to practice Sharia Law. So can some Malo give me a compelling reason why Nigeria should stay united when those Islamic, Northern Malos do not follow the Constitution but practice Saudi type Sharia Law.

You are right. Yaradua, a Malo, will go to Saudi for treatment rather than travel to the most sophisticated Western hospital. It is that same Muslim alliance, and that alliance trumps any fidelity to one's Nationality. Some of those Islamic, Northern Malos would even join Alqaeda to fight against Nigeria. Remember that a USA citizen who converted to Islam joined the Taliban in fighting against the United States. Nigeria should split. The North should join Alqeda and Osama Bin Laden. I h ave had enough.

The sad part is the Nigerian government lacks enough backbone to go to the North and weed out all those Al qaeda Malos! The Emirs and the Sultan will probably interfere with  government efforts aimed at obliterating Alqaeda faithfuls in the North. Those Emirs may even be on the payroll of Osama Bin Laden.

I guess the principles that underlie Islam give enough wiggle room for extremists to use for committing violence against innocent people. Moderate muslims need to proactively join the fight against extreme Islam.
