Nigeria has had four presidents since its return to democracy, all of whom have brought some level of development to the nation.

So I would like to know which of these Presidents stood out for you in terms of the level of development, standard of living, security, and economic policies.

You can state your reasons why you feel one is/was better than all others.

PoliticsArgentine Senate Approves Bill To Legalise Abortion by privaldo(op): 11:38am On Dec 30, 2020
30 Dec 2020

Argentina’s Senate has passed a landmark abortion bill, becoming the fourth country in Latin America to legalise the practice.

The Senate voted by 38 in favour to 29 against with one abstention to approve a bill allowing the procedure through the 14th week of pregnancy, bucking the traditionally strong influence of the Catholic Church in the region.

The contentious vote followed a marathon debate that began at 4pm (19:00 GMT) on Tuesday.

Tens of thousands of people packed into the square around the National Congress for a 12 hour debate, breaking into chants of [b]“legal abortion in the hospital”
as the votes were counted.

“I can’t believe it,” said Viviana Rios Alvarado, 25, as she embraced her friend moments after the vote.

“So many things we’ve been through or that people we love have suffered through. It’s took too long, but now it’s here for others, and for us too. And that’s incredible,” she said.

The vote is the result of a long campaign in a country that remained divided on the issue.

Opponents also gathered outside the Congress, holding a mass and praying for legislators to block the bill.

As the result was read out, a crowd of thousands erupted in cheers outside the Senate building in Buenos Aires, waving the green flags that represented their campaign as green smoke rose above the crowd.

“We did it sisters. We made history. We did it together. There are no words for this moment, it passes through the body and the soul,” tweeted Monica Macha, a politician with President Alberto Fernandez’ centre-left ruling coalition which supported the law.

The ruling could set the tone for a wider shift in conservative Latin America where there are growing calls for greater reproductive rights for women.

Across the region, abortions are available on demand only in Communist Cuba, comparatively tiny Uruguay and some parts of Mexico.

“Adopting a law that legalizes abortion in a Catholic country as big as Argentina will energize the struggle to ensure women’s rights in Latin America,” said Juan Pappier, a senior Americas researcher at Human Rights Watch.

“Although there will certainly be resistance, I think it’s fair to predict that, as it occurred when Argentina legalised same sex marriage in 2010, this new law could have a domino effect in the region.”

Until now, Argentine law has only allowed abortion when there is a serious risk to the health of the mother or in cases of rape.

Pro-choice groups argue that criminalising abortion harms women from the most vulnerable groups who they say are instead often forced to seek dangerous illegal abortions.

Argentina’s powerful Catholic church argues the practice violates the right to life. Argentina is the birthplace of Pope Francis.

A change in the law was narrowly defeated in a Senate vote in 2018 after being approved in the lower house, but the latest bill was the first to have the backing of the ruling government.

PoliticsNothing Must Happen To Kukah, ECWA Warns by privaldo(op): 12:14am On Dec 30, 2020
By AbdulGafar Alabelewe, Kaduna

Against the backdrop of threat and intimidation against the person of the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah over his Christmas Message, General Secretary, Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) Rev. Yunusa Sabo Nmadu Jnr has warned that nothing negative must happen to him.

This is also like the youth wing of Southern Kaduna People’s Union (SOKAPU) has described the statement credited to Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) and signed by it’s national President Yerima Shetima, calling for the arrest of Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah over his Christmas day message as ‘baseless and senseless’.

According to the ECWA scribe in a statement signed by him, he has read so many reactions to the bishop’s message with many of them coming from Muslim and Northern groups.

He averred that “some of the uncharitable groups have even called for the arrest of our revered Bishop. Arrest a man that spoke the minds of millions of Nigerian? They must be joking” he stated.

Reverend Nmadu further said that there is nothing new about what Bishop Kukah said, stressing that “the Bishop has spoken our minds, and we will resist any attempt by any group or agency of Government to harm him. Enough of this intimidation.

“This style of governance to silent dissent voices by the Major General Muhammadu Buhari led administration is unacceptable and must be resisted.

“We invite the international community and Nigerians to hold General Buhari and his government responsible should anything happen to Bishop Kukah.

“As a matter of fact, Nepotism under General Buhari administration is topnotch. This administration has a first-class in nepotism and maladministration.

“The Federal Government must immediately take steps towards addressing those concerns raised by Bishop Kukah, rather than sponsoring fake groups to attack the revered Bishop.

“There is no denying the fact that Nigeria under General Buhari is now a centre of bloodshed. Killings, banditry, kidnappings and all forms of insecurities are now an order of the day. The President should face the job for which he swore to. Mr. President, fulfill your campaign promises, secure the country and make life better for all of us.

“The earlier this administration take steps to addressing these genuine concerns and stop living in denial, the better for them and the country”.

He emphasised that the country belongs to all of us and that no section of this country should be made superior to the other. We are bonafide citizens with equal rights. “Enough of this shenanigans” he further stressed.

SOKAPU in their own statement said the Bishop’s message was borne out of love for the country when he stated the obvious that “considering the gross nepotistic leadership style of the president and his administration, the president would have been long overthrown if he were to be a Non-Northern Muslim”.

In a statement signed by Comrade John Isaac, National Youth Leader of SOKAPU youth wing, the union expressed surprise and sadness that despite the visible failure of the Buhari administration which they claimed is evident in the high rate of kidnapping and banditry even in the president’s Katsina, people could still defend him.

“That despite the poor state of the Nigerian economy which has seen Nigeria plunged into recession for the second time in five years with a ridiculous foreign reserve and an embarrassing debt profile.

“That despite clear signs of maladministration in the Buhari’s administration evident in the fact that the administration has continuously bankrolled bandits and terrorist Boko Haram groups through the payment of ransoms and freeing of captured terrorist members under the guise of “repentant members”.

“That despite the clandestine and lopsided composition of the security architecture of the country, the Arewa Youths Consultative Forum could allow itself to drown in the murky waters of tribalism, ethnic loyalty and religious bigotry, choosing to look away from the realities of the North which has become a pool of blood and a yard of graves.

“Yerima’s North is unarguably a valley of dry bones, a dent of terror and horror and unquestionably the most insecure and dangerous part of the country where no one is safe including the President”.

SOKAPU, therefore, averred that it is unfortunate that the Arewa Youths Consultative Forum would call for the arrest of a Bishop who only pointed out the obvious, stressing that “It thus appears that the Arewa Youths Consultative Forum is naive of historical facts.

“It has become necessary therefore to state in clear terms that the entire youths of Southern Kaduna distant and disassociates themselves from the Arewa Youths Consultative Forum’s call for the arrest of Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah, a call we all considers as not just baseless but senseless”.

SOKAPU youth wing also said that the Buhari administration is undoubtedly the greatest political and administrative fiasco Nigeria has had since independence.

“While we the Youths and People of Southern Kaduna stands firmly with Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah and condemn any call for his arrest.

“We are calling on all well-meaning Nigerians to speak out and save the country from sliding into a failed state as the signals are at the moment clearly visible to the blind and audible to the deaf”.

Throwback December 19, 2015: PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI HAILS FATHER MBAKA FOR COURAGE IN FAULTING JONATHAN'S GOVERNMENT

By Joseph Erunke

ABUJA – PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, commended the courage of Father Ejike Mbaka, for not only criticizing some policies of the former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration but also moving against the latter’s reelection bid in the 2015 presidential poll.

Buhari, who spoke when he played host to the controversial Catholic priest and founder of Adoration Ministry, Enugu, at the Presidential Villa, described the pre-election exhortation of the priest, when he descended hard on the former president, as the best in his life.

A statement by Mr Femi Adesina, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the president, said the president noted that the message was not only honest but also well delivered. President Buhari has “said that one of the best exhortations to the nation he has heard from the pulpit was the one made early this year by Father Ejike Mbaka of the Adoration Minis-tries, Enugu.

“President Buhari expressed his apprec-iation of the Catholic priest’s exemp-lary cou-rage, “the statement read. It quoted the president as saying:” “Thank you very much for what you have done and said. It brought you out to the whole country as a man of courage. It was honest and well delivered.

“It has gone into the records as one of the best concerns expressed from the pulpit, not because it favoured me and my party, the All Progressives Congress, but because it was good for the country.“ President Buhari reaffirmed his conviction that change will come to the country, “with a lot of hard work, despite the security and economic problems.”

He appealed for the continued underst-anding and patience of Nigerians. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who was present at the president’s audience with Father Mbaka described the priest as a man “who stood for truth and propriety, and declared corruption unacceptable.”He added that the Buhari administration “is committed to truth and justice, and won’t encourage corruption in any way.”

Fr. Mbaka, who in the run up to the 2015 presidential election, told his teeming followers that erstwhile President Goodluck Jonathan would not be re-elected because of pervading corruption and insecurity in the land, said he was happy with the mission and methodology of the Buhari administration. He also wished the President a happy 73rd birthday.

By the way, FFK, Aisha Yesufu, Abubakar Gumi and host of others have said worst things but remained ignored. So why is Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah's criticism different?

The fact is that Bishop Kukah's offence is daring to speak when he is merely of inconsequential ethnic group in Kaduna.

So, the backlash from Hausa/Fulani is not about protecting President Buhari but about putting Bishop Kukah in his place.
Lmao grin. I hate quoting you but I will give you a simple piece of advice, if you want your religion (Islam), and people of your race (Fulani's) to keep on existing and being relevant avoid the Roman Catholic Church.

PoliticsCardinal Onaiyekan: Nigerians Deceived By Buhari's Government by privaldo(op): 1:42am On Dec 29, 2020
Former Archbishop of the Catholic Diocese of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, has said President Muhammadu Buhari's admittance that Nigerians don't trust his government is a positive step.

The clergyman stated this while reacting to Buhari's Christmas message when he featured on a Channels Television programme.

Onaiyekan attributed the rising public distrust in Buhari's administration to widespread deceit being peddled on numerous occasions.

"It is positive that President Buhari recognises that his government has a heavy liability of trust deficits and it is not good for a nation that the citizens cannot trust their government so that even when the government is trying to do the right thing, there is always the feeling, 'let us wait and see, maybe it's one of those things again' which means to speak truth to power, our government must take a look at its modus operandi, its way of operation," he said.

"Up till now, they ought to be able to know why is it that they have a trust deficit, why is it that people don’t seem to want to trust them. If you ask me basically, you trust someone who is truthful but if you have too many cases of government saying one thing and doing perhaps another, the recipe for a trust deficit."

Buttressing his point, the Catholic cleric cited the current administration's claim that Boko Haram has been defeated even when the deadly sect continues to kill Nigerians.

He continued: "We've heard a lot said about fake news, about massive deceit, this is not correct and if for example, we were told that the Boko Haram has been defeated and they are still on, people will ask, what do you mean, are you serious so that any time again there is announcement on Boko Haram, people will say, well we wait and see until we are really sure which means we have a task before us and government ought to take that seriously and all those who speak on behalf of government should believe in the sacredness of the truth.

"Nigerians are ready to listen to the truth but when they are consistently deceived, it is neither good for the government nor good for the governed. Here, everyone has to do an examination of conscience. I throw the ball therefore back at not only President Buhari himself but all those who are with him running the affairs of this nation. We will be really happy to have a government to trust."

Onaiyekan said meaningful development has been elusive in the country because the leaders have refused to demonstrate the needed political will to engineer change.

He called on Buhari to address the widespread insecurity in the country, adding that people can only trust their leaders when they are matching words with actions.

PoliticsSouthern, Middle Belt Leaders Back Kukah, Say FG Can't Suppress Voice Of Reason by privaldo(op): 12:30am On Dec 29, 2020
By Udora Orizu

The Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF) has expressed its support for the assertion by the Catholic Bishop of the Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, on the state of the nation.

Kukah had in his 2020 Christmas Message said President Muhammadu Buhari was presiding over a country with prospects of a failed state.

He also said that there was no way any non-Northern Muslim President could have done a fraction of what President Buhari had done by his nepotism and gotten away with it, adding that there would have been a military coup or war.

Reacting, the Federal Government had said it was graceless and impious for any religious leader to use the period of Christmas, which is a season of peace, to stoke the embers of hatred, sectarian strife and national disunity.

It also said calling for violent overthrow of democratically elected government was not what a religious leader should engage in.

But, the Southern and Middle belt Forum in a statement titled, ‘You cannot suppress the voice of reason’, and signed by its leaders, Yinka Odumakin (South West), Chief Guy Ikoku (South East), Senator Bassey Henshaw (South South) and Dr Isuwa Dogo (Middle Belt), condemned the reaction of the Federal Government.

The forum said Kukah had been a beacon of truthfulness over the years, and remains a foremost defender of the aspirations of millions of Nigerians across ethnic and religious lines, adding that the voice of truth and reason, can never be suppressed.

According to the statement, ”The leadership of the Southern Nigeria and Middle Belt Forum, notes with very serious concern and condemnation the outbursts of the Presidency and the Northern Elders Forum over the Christmas Day Message of the revered Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Mathew Hassan Kukah.

”The outspoken cleric who has been a beacon of truthfulness over the years, remains a foremost defender of the aspirations of millions of Nigerians across ethnic and religious lines. On this occasion, his comments have been applauded by majority of Nigerians and we all stand with him.

”We want to remind the Federal Government and its attack dogs that in the past, they had equally welcomed the forthright views of this Man of God even it favoured them. So why attack him now when he cautions them on their divisive policies? Today, the country has become terribly divided along all kinds of lines. It is shameful and indefensible that suddenly, the Federal Government is dominated by one small ethnic group and they expect all to keep quiet like slaves. Also the wind of insecurity is now almost tsunami and even up to Mr. President’s doorstep in Katsina when he was home recently on holiday.

”What we expected was for those concerned to retrace their very unhelpful steps and get back to rekindling oneness in the country. We once more can call on the Federal Government to take urgent steps to restructure the country. Finally, we remind those concerned that the voice of truth and reason, can never be suppressed successfully. Bishop Kukah remains a national icon, a hero of the masses. We therefore demand immediate apology to him for the baseless attacks.”

Is the writer trying to say countries like Iran, Iraq Turkmenistan, Syria all doing better than Nigeria? With the chaos going on in most countries there.
