Let’s talk this one out. How much of Umuzocha village (in Awka) is known to be indigenous to Awka vs. how many people there are a mixture of Igala and Igbo, and likewise for Nsukka (I might’ve done a thread on this before, but contextually it kinda fits in here as well, even if just for comparison’s sake). Where does the Igala influence actually come from?

Here’s the Awka/Awka-sprung composition of my maternal family for about two generations from what it’s worth: mum’s mum - Umuzocha (paternally) and Eha-Ndiagu, Nsukka (her mum) | mum’s dad - Isiagu-Amikwo (dad’s side) and Umukwa (his mum).

Umuzocha: Amachalla, Ifite Section
Isiagu-Amikwo: Amikwo, Ezinator Section
Umukwa: Ezi-Oka, Ezinator Section

I was at a hotel in Awka recently and some random guy even asked me if I’m from Amikwo village. Didn’t want to answer that question because I don’t get personal with total strangers in the flesh but he was kinda onto something. Somehow. Maybe have a slight ‘Amikwo look’ about me. I dunno.

Also, I hear what you saying about the whole Umuzocha distin. The thing with my mum’s mum is that she actually had to flee to Idah during the Biafran war so she probably would’ve learnt Igala anyway but the fact that she’s Umuzochan might have had something to do with it. She’s no more (died about 17 years ago) but she spoke Igala as well as Igbo right ’til the end. How much of Umuzocha village actually has Igala heritage?

I used to think that Akankpisi was just the other side of Nri but it turns out that Nri is actually just Agukwu-Nri (for all the offshoots, like Ogwashi-Ukwu and, indeed, Akankpisi, that exist) and Akankpisi is its own village. Is that the truth?

Igbo culture is not the same as Nigeria's universal culture..there are more than 300 multi-ethnic groups in Nigeria...and Igbo is just one of them...now, each tribe and culture are so unique amd important to the people who practice them ....however, there is always the common norm or culture which is generally unique to all the culture ...
1. Pidgin English: irrespective of your local language ...pidgin English is widely acceptable to all of Nigeria.

2. Ankara clothes: each tribe has its own unique cultural attire but Ankara clothes are widely and universally acceptable to all Nigerians.

3. Food: each tribe in Nigeria has its own unique food but Jollof Rice is widely acceptable

4. Music: each tribe has its own unique music but Afro-beat and Amapiano are widely acceptable

S. Place : Each tribe has a its own unique place but Lagos state is the centre of all the activities.

And so on...

By UK standards, it really is menial. The pay isn’t commensurate with the work. Hence why it’s been largely left for immigrants.

But compared to people in Nigeria doing a middle income job, care work abroad is better.

One piece of advice I’d give to anyone looking to travel abroad who needs to do that kind of job for a minute is to not go and join agency. Agency staff are looked down upon as the most menial of the menial and as an … agency it’s full of people from other countries (not Nigeria but places where people under a certain age aren’t exactly guaranteed to have the best command of English, like Pakistan now) who can barely communicate with the people they support in English. There are other reasons for lack of correspondence in communication that can go between anyone and anyone, wherever they’re from or where they’ve been born/lived (say you have a low voice and someone who’s partially deaf just isn’t getting you well to begin with). But agency staff are often the least-qualified for life abroad. Even if you’re good as an individual agency-staff member, people are automatically expecting the worst of you from the very beginning. For the sake of a bit of dignity within the sphere of support-work you’re better-off at least being bank staff if not on a fixed number of contracted hours. At least bank-staff are proper staff who are fully affiliated with the individual company they’re working for but are just on flexible hours and exact location for any one shift. Agency staff are seen as the runt of the litter who no-one wants to use when there are better-regarded staff (fixed-contract or bank) who can do it. So, really, if anyone wan-JAPA and has to do support-work for a minute or a season, I’d make sure I’m at least not agency staff that people are always hesitant to use. They’re like a last resort from what I know.

But yeah. Support work is no joke. Anyone who’s done it for whatever reason, whatever their background knows that it takes a lot more skill than people often think.
