FashionRe: Women: Nigerian Men Lack Dress Sense by PTH(m): 12:14am On Aug 22, 2007
This dressing matter no be small thing o.

Here are my own pet peeves:
1. Guys guys! Please do not wear a du rag and then put a scrawny face cap turned backwards on your head. It screams "ghetto" anytime we see you. And if you must wear a du rag please do us the favour of making sure it is clean.

2. Make a firm decision, if you want to wear pants please don't wear them halfway up your boxers. It is either you wear them or just go with the boxers only!

3. Sunshades in moonlight? Na wa for una.

4. What is with all the chains and bracelets and the huge ear rings on the left ear?

5. There is a reason why shirts have sizes, stop wearing your t-shirts as babanrigas! Please buy your own size.

6. Abeg, the ropes and key chains that dangle out of your back pocket. Till tomorrow i no fit understand una.

I wonder!

If we were to creat a Yoruba nation for example, it would likely strectch from Ore to Benin Republic. The question is, do you think such an entity would be more progressive, sophisticated, and competitive with other tribal nation states?
The fact that the last time we were classified as one of the world's fastest growing economies was during the regional system of governance conclusively proves that on our own, the yoruba's would have been one of the most powerful nations in Africa today.

Imagine what would have been in 1979 if we had Obafemi Awolowo as president instead of the inept Shagari? Imagine what would have been if we did not have to contend with a Yakubu Gowon, Babangida, Abacha? What would we have been in 1993 if Abiola had been president?
But for the North Olu Falae would have been president in 1999. What would we have been if the likes of Gani Fawehinmi could confidently either contest for president or be made justice minister without the wahala of federal character?

Oh how wonderful it will be if we could apply to schools of our choice without JAMB and its quota system?

@ ziddy

if its skin color that is our problem then the people of the middle east especially Iraq must be black. You hit the nail on the head with the point in your last paragraph. Democracy was existing in our ancient societies long before Lord Lugard and his murderous friends came along. What of the igbo societies who did not have an igwe? they still ruled themselves by a system of checks and balances.

Our major stumbling block in Nigeria is not resources or how to manage them but how to accomodate incompatible groups within the same country. Once we get this right we'd be headed for greatness.

if 40+ years after independence from these foreigners who created the nations at their whims, is it still acceptable to regard them as the problem?
Are they the ones preventing the nations from gaining the experience and expertise required to run their nations effectively?
no they are not. But consider this, if you plant maize seeds, do you expect to find an orange tree growing in 40 yrs time? If the foundation of a house is bad, no matter how well the new owners patch the roof and paint the house it will still fall at the slightest breeze.

It is impossible to build success on a faulty structure and that is why we remain locked in a cycle of poverty and the Europeans are not. We cant even put square pegs in square holes because we must satisfy the federal character system and we expect to develop?

Before you start a love fight with Babeelove, you made an important remark about divide and rule, I was interested in having you elaborate on that.
take a good look at most African nations embroiled in "ethnic" strife for the last 30 yrs, what do you think has been the common denominator?
Look at the distribution of homogenous ethnic groups in Africa, for example Yorubas divided between Nigeria and Benin Republic, Hausas divided between Niger, Nigeria, Chad e.t.c.

Now have you ever wonder why NO NATION in Europe has 2 or more major ethnically diverse groups? Have you considered what a nation with Russians in the north, Arabs in the south-south, Germans in the west and Jews in the east would look like?

Nice try PTH!
Biting the hand that feeds us. Your size and comfort must be very impressive. You defined capitalism very well. Let me ask a question? Are you prepared to sacrifice your time, energy, or even your life for Nigeria? If you are, then shut up, go back and partner with the right people to bring about change. The US you are so proud of being in has the blood of those that sacrificed themselves as well as that of the. innocents.
You want to be an American? By all means, pursue it! But don't go about abusing a situation you lack the guts to try to change.
I also do not have the energy to waste on prattling issues that will not add a dime to me. You want to be an American, go ahead but please leave Nigeria to those that care enough. Its not ball about gettin a visa, you know
Nonsense.
Plenty of noise making mr kukura.

1. If you are so proud of Nigeria WHY ARE YOU NOT BACK THERE HELPING IT SINCE YOU CARE FOR IT? I have just one word for people like you; hypocrites! you cant sit in the US bashing it and claiming to care for Nigeria. Why are you not back home "to sacrifice your time, energy, or even your life for Nigeria"?
Too much noise without substance methinks.

2. Mr. Kukura, Americans probably bash their country and president 100x more than you can ever do and they are the most patriotic people you will ever find on the surface of the earth so to equate criticism with nonchalance about my country is to be naive.

In some way i agree with you but with the emerging of states, i don't think that's an issue because we have countries with more states and less resources doing better than we are.
It is not about just having more or less states. A single state in the US has a larger budget than the entire nation of Nigeria. Lets be candid, states in other nations are semi-autonomous entities who only pay taxes to the federal government, have their own source of revenue, have their independent constitutions and run their school and health systems independent of others.

What do we have in Nigeria? States who cannot function without "federal allocation", states who have to beg the FG before they can repair roads, clear gutters and buy primary school chairs and desks. Are thoe states?

I was just glancing through some pages on the net, and i came across this word, Nigeria was a much better place without oil, i want to know from fellow Nairaland users if you support or reject this statement with reasons why you are support or not in support of the statement.
Please candid view and opinion needed in this case. Undecided
Not really. Norway has oil and she is one of the richest and most powerful European nations. Oil is not a curse when managed responsibly. We had no problems with oil until 1966 when some hausa goons decided to destroy the regional system of government and divided us into 36 mostly unviable federal appendages and financial drainpipes called states.

Kukura on the Move:
You simply refuse to face the massive negative impact thet the US has become to the world. The evidence is clear for all to see. Denex made it all clear.

Also, before you think its just the the developing nations, you are wrong. They are domineering to their alliea as well, as in bulldozing their way in the Iraq war build up, as well as in the GATT talks concerning agriculture.
lol if the US has such a negative image why are millions dying to get into the US still? Doesnt that smack of hypocrisy? If you think the US is bullying her allies what do you think Russia is doing? Molly coddlying hers? Russia is a belligerent and despotic nation and yet everyone bleats about the US. Iraq invades Kuwait and the world sits by only to start crying as soon as the US attack Iraq.
The supporter of APC are right now massacreing more than half a million Sudanese and yet all the world can do is cry foul at the US as muslims kill muslims in Iraq.

The US is domineering? YES! How else did she become this powerful? The FIRST priority a nation has is to her citizens and not to play big brother to the world. Capitalism is all about selfishness and greed not about being a father christmas.

Kukura on the Move:
I pray with the changes being pursued back home concerning monetary policy, we hope Nigerians will use them for what they are truly worth, getan education and head back home to develop your own country.
Lets be frank here, what do you think the monetary policy will achieve? I'm not being pessimistic here but Zimbabwe recently slashed a couple of zeros from her currency and yet her inflation rate is still 3000%. That you make N100 equivalent to N1 does not make any difference, it is the purchasing power of that N1 that counts. As long as corruption, a flawed constitution and a policy of "sharing oil wealth" remains firmly entrenched Nigeria will not improve where she to revert to cowries for currency.

Kukura on the Move:
In addition, a large percentage of people can be very retarded in behaviour when, instead of facing the issues, you simply dvert and start making juvenile All of you nigerians that are out here in the states, I hope you can truly reach your limits in America. I say this because I have seen thje height of their hypocricy and double standard. I wish you well. If we can be honest, we will see all these. I wish you all well. The cowardice in us all is stopping us from taking a stand. Instead, we kill ourselves to get out, yet we are not officially at war. When we are, what will happenhuh

Yes, I am here in the States so I know how its like. Be honest with yourselves.
How is it like sir? With all due respect very many Nigerians have achieved far more than the American dream. That you havent does not mean everyone else did not. What hypocrisy and double standard exists in the US that is not evident in Nigeria? Can Nigeria provide scholarships and free healthcare for her citizens? Yet the US provides for qualified non-citizens and all we can do is turn back and bite the hands that feed us?

I do not worship the US but i am of the oppinion that we stop this attitude of thinking that to be seen to love Nigeria is to bash the US. IF you think the Americans are hypocrites why are you still in their country?

Kukura on the Move:
One other curious fact, if America is so wonderful in all ramifications, why are you on a Nigerian site? There are a million and one American sites. Go there. We don't need you here. Frankly!!!
Please take care.
Here is an even more curious puzzle; if America is so bad in all ramifications why are you living on American soil? There are 36 states + the FCT in Nigeria. Go there. Americans frankly can do without you!!!

@ Ono, no problem about the name.

925 has already mentioned it. The problem with the west (i'm from the west btw) is cowardice! The real voices of the west want out of the present contraption called a nation but those who pretend to speak for us make so much noise about one Nigeria when in fact what they mean is fill my pockets.
The north wants this present situation to continue because without it they are no better than Niger republic.

We may shy from it all we want but a revolution may end up being the blessing in disguise we really need. Until our so-called leaders in the south start presenting a united front to end this pseudo-federal state of civilian militocracy we will continue going round in circles pretending to love Nigeria.
