It's rather sad that a president who many thought would support the interests of the citizens ended up having his tenure marred with fraternization with the most corrupt and callously wicked sets of people anywhere in the world. Let's hope this or similar set of people do not hijack the general's administration. God help Nigeria |
Yesterday, a relative went to the University College Hospital Ibadan for treatment but was asked to go to another hospital because doctors in the tertiary health facility are on strike. The strike which today (Tuesday) entered its fourth day was embarked upon by members of the Association of Resident Doctors in the hospital. The President of the Association of Resident Doctors in the hospital, Dr. Lukman Ogunjinmi, said casualisation of medical officers and the refusal of the UCH management to honour a circular issued by the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation on the welfare of doctors were issues at the centre of the strike. The association has about 600 doctors in the hospital. He said, “The reasons why we are on strike are clear. What we are against is casualisation and we want skipping to be implemented as directed by the Federal Government in circulars issued by the Head of Service of the Federation and that issued by the Federal Ministry of Health. “The Federal Government in the circular said a particular grade level should be skipped by all health workers. It has been done for all other health workers while some centres have started doing it for doctors. This is backed up. Here in UCH, it has not been done.” But the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. Temitope Alonge, had denied having doctors with casual status in the hospital. Alonge said that some of the issues raised were internal matters that had been resolved. He said, “For us, the issue of salaries and wages that are due to workers is not the prerogative of the ministries. It is the prerogative of the National Salary and Wages Commission. So, the issue of employment is resident in the Head of Service. “In the circular that we have from the National Salary and Wages Commission, there is nothing like skipping for doctors. So, whatever conflict that has arisen, the only body that is empowered to provide an answer is the National Salary Wages Commission. You don’t pay what you don’t have." An international rating agency has raised alarm over the state of the Nigerian economy. According to Standard & Poor’s, Nigeria’s economy is in a “clear and present danger,” with a negative sovereign ratings watch of BB minus. Konrad Reuss regional manager, sub-Saharan Africa, said the factors putting the Nigerian economy in danger include the Boko Haram insurgency and the fall in oil prices. The expert noted that the alarm is being raised due to the importance of oil for government and export revenues, as well as the forthcoming elections. Reuss explained that Standard & Poor’s rated Nigeria based on its six main categories and found out that Nigeria was weak in three classifications, namely: institutional and governance effectiveness, economic structure and growth, fiscal flexibility and performance. Speaking while addressing a seminar on Nigeria in Sandton, Johannesburg, he said Nigeria was classified as neutral in external liquidity and international investment position and monetary flexibility, while its only area of strength was in its debt burden. He said there is weakness in the structure of the economy and not the country’s growth rate, adding that the structural problems were not being offset by the good growth. Despite the uncertainty over the forthcoming elections, Reuss said elections did not automatically deliver bad results, adding that they could deliver good ones. He said: “Despite these concerns, Nigeria remained in the middle of the sovereign ratings rankings for Africa. Notwithstanding the negative watch, I like Nigeria, it is a diversified economy. It has an interesting private sector. “Ratings are really about credit-worthiness. If we did downgrade Nigeria, it would have little effect on its borrowing. “It would be more an issue of the country’s image. From a debt perspective, even if there was a downgrade, Nigeria would still look solid.” Source: http://innovation-village.com/international-rating-agency-raises-alarm-over-state-of-nigerias-economy/ |

Nigeria’s ruling party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has said President Goodluck Jonathan has transformed the country’s health sector, resulting in better healthcare and a record increase in life expectancy in the country. National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh in a statement on Sunday said the health sector under President Jonathan has been given a priority place resulting in the formulation and implementation of strategic policies to strengthen the national health system for effective and affordable delivery of health services to Nigerians as contained in the manifesto of the PDP. The party said the last four years have witnessed an aggressive reorganization of the health ministry and its paratatals as well as rehabilitation and re-equipping of federal medical institutions including all teaching hospitals, transforming them from consulting clinics they were reduced, to comprehensive secondary and referral life saving institutions. “We recall that President Goodluck Jonathan had in 2010 launched the National Strategic Health Development Plan (2010-2015) which clearly spelt out government’s plans in that very important sector. Four years down the line, the project has been pursued with vigour and unquestionable commitment and the results are palpable. “Using the Saving One Million Lives Initiatives and National Health Insurance Scheme, it is incontrovertible that in the last four years of Jonathan Presidency, Nigerians have more access to adequate and affordable health care, resulting in a record increase in life expectancy in the nation. “Indeed, over a million lives have been saved directly under the Saving One Million Lives initiative by scaling up cost-effective interventions in maternal and child health care, nutrition, prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV, malaria control and eradication of polio. “Today, maternal mortality has dropped by more than 50 percent following the provision of Midwives Service Scheme and the attendant facilities in our hospitals. The Nigerian child now receives free diabetes treatment in all public hospitals across the country also. “Under the National Strategic Health Development Plan, new technologies in modern medical equipment are now available in most Federal medical institutions, positioning them to handle medical emergencies and disease control. Thus, cases such as kidney, heart and brain ailments as well as cancer are being effectively handled in Nigeria at present. “After about ten years, open-heart surgery has resumed in Nigerian hospitals. So far, more than 55 of such surgeries have been conducted in our hospitals in 2013 with University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan among others as front runners. “Microsurgery of the brain is also now being conducted at Federal medical Centre, Umuahia while laparoscopic surgery for fibroid cases has since commenced at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe. Also full laparoscopic services has commenced at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Ile Ife. “This is in addition to the establishment of Geriatric Units for the elderly in Federal Tertiary Hospitals while renal transplant is now handled in most teaching hospitals across the country. “Following the reviving of investment in medical research which was neglected in the past, Nigeria has been able to record breakthrough in the management of sickle cell anemia with the University of Benin Teaching Hospital performing an infusion cell into sickle anemia patience in 2012. “The National Orthopedic Hospitals in Enugu, Kano and Lagos as well as Federal Medical Centre, Yenegoa among others are now performing Total knee and hip replacement thereby giving lifeline to accident victims in the country. Great successes have been recorded with record high number of VVF repairs at the National Obstetric Fistula Centres using state of the art equipment,” the party said. Fire outbreak occurred in the early hours of today at the multi-billion naira Heritage Mall in Ibadan. the fire gutted the multimillion naira cinema at the mall belonging to Filmhouse Cinema. Onlookers said the fire outbreak started in the early hours of the day which made it very difficult to put under control considering the fact that no one sleeps in the mall and offices don't open until around 10 in the morning. Since it began operations about 2 years ago, the cinema has been a beehive of activities attracting thousands of movie lovers every week. Following the success of the cinema, the management decided to open another branch at A new mall that recently opened at Samonda in the heart of the city, very close to the University of Ibadan. Movie lovers expressed shock at the development, hoping that reconstruction work would be sped up so that movie lovers in Ibadan can begin to watch films at the cinema once again. https://ibpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/filmhouse-dugbe.jpg https://ibpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/filmhouse-cinema-dugbe-300x169.jpg Source: http://ibpulse.com/2015/01/fire-outbreak-at-heritage-mall-guts-filmhouse-cinema-dugbe-ibadan.html |

Civil servants in Oyo state are yet to receive their November salaries even as some say they are yet to receive their salaries for the month of October. Some of them that spoke to IBPulse.com in the state government said the delay in the payment of workers’ salaries has become a regular experience among the workforce. “We heard rumours that they have stated paying for November but so far no one that I know had received alert,” a staff working at the Oyo State Government Secretariat said. This development is in sharp contrast to the claim of the state government that is paying the salaries of its workers on time. This delay also affects other cadres of workers including primary and secondary school teachers. With the general elections fast approaching, some workers believe the delay in the salaries may be a way through which the governor’s political party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) is planning to raise funds for the elections. “They will spend lots of money for the elections, and he may be required to be sending specific sum of money to Tinubu and other stakeholders in the party, this may be the reason why we are yet to get paid,” a civil servant said. Attempts to reach the chairman of the state chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) were futile however, workers in the state are appealing to the state government to promptly pay their salaries so they could happily celebrate Christmas and New Year with their loved ones. “People are already anxious and agitating. We have a lot to buy for the festive period and our children are already waiting to know when we buy clothes, shoes and food for them. We are not asking for any favours, we just want our salary, it’s our right because we’ve worked for it,” another civil servant told IBPulse.com in Ibadan. We complain a lot about our country with very few things to celebrate. This is a company that was started by young Nigerians, one of them was even a Nairaland addict before they struck gold with Jumia. This should inspire us all to become entrepreneurs and not stand (and die) in stadiums while fighting and lobbying to get low-paying and highly risky government jobs. Ecommerce platform Jumia has announced it has raised about US$150 million additional funding from its existing shareholders. The company in a statement said the additional fund would be used to strengthen its position as the leading online retailer in Africa.Source: http://www.humanipo.com/news/47735/jumia-secures-150m-additional-funding-from-existing-shareholders/ |

Nobel laureate Prof Wole Soyinka has warned that continual reliance on the internet poses great threat to scholarship. He said this while delivering the 3rd annual Zik Lecture at Nigeria’s Nnamdi Azikiwe University. Soyinka said the heavy reliance on internet for academic activities could lead to the end of books as instrument for mind development and potential building. He noted that there has been serious decline in writing and reading among the younger generation. He advised them not to allow any primordial considerations to hinder them from developing their innate potentials. Tech revolution he said has essentially destroyed the realm of imagination in young people, adding that PCs and tablet devices could end the culture of book writing and reading. “The end point should be how to find a way of collaborating between book writing and use of internet knowledge,” Soyinka said.
