PoliticsAlaafin, Others Back Gov. Ajimobi On The Appointment Of Princes As Commissioners by pumpingmachine(op): 12:30pm On Nov 18, 2013
The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III has justified the recent appointment of the children of some traditional rulers into the Oyo State cabinet by Governor Abiola Ajimobi. According to the royal father, the governor was only following the footsteps of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

He said this while leading other traditional rulers from different zones of the state on a courtesy visit to Governor Ajimobi in his office in Ibadan.

He noted the reverence and exemplary deference to the institution of traditional rulership in the then Western Region of Nigeria by Chief Awolowo, which he said led to the setting up of the first Council of Obas and Chiefs in 1956.

He also recalled that the late Chief Awolowo established the first bi-camera legislature in Black Africa when he inaugurated the House of Chiefs to run contemporaneously with the House of Assembly in the then Western Region in 1959.

He said that the idea of ministerial appointment to Obas as a means of creating rapport between the executive arm of government and traditional rulership up to cabinet level, initiated by Chief Awolowo was also borrowed by the Second Republic Governor of Oyo State, the late Chief Bola Ige with the appointment of the then Ataoja of Osogbo and Eleruwa of Eruwa into his cabinet as commissioners without portfolio.

"I am of the strong opinion that the factors that made the experience succeed before will also be around to ensure its success during your own time too,’’ he said.

With the appointments, the king said Governor Ajimobi has demonstrated that he attaches more importance to the traditional institution as the closest to the grassroots.

Responding, Governor Ajimobi claimed full responsibility for the appointment of the children of some traditional rulers as commissioners in the state, saying that none of their fathers solicited for their appointment. Rather, he said that he picked them out of his own volition based on based on their individual competence, qualification and pedigree which qualified them for their appointment.

"I am aware of what some people have been saying about the appointment of the children of some traditional rulers as commissioners. The question is: who among them was not qualified for the appointment?

"Besides, I want to state here that I appointed them by myself. None of their fathers contacted me or requested for appointment for any of the commissioners. I perused their papers thoroughly and I discovered that they all had their track records. They all did very well and we are proud of them.

"Let me also state that the appointment was to show our respect to the traditional rulers, support for the traditional institution and to recognize the contributions of their respective families to the development of the state,’’ he said.

Nairaland GeneralKerosene Sells For N50 Per Liter In Ibadan by pumpingmachine(op): 5:24pm On Nov 11, 2013
More than 5000 residents of Ibadan have benefited from the N50 per liter sale of kerosene according to the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN). The sale of kerosene at N50 per litre was ordered by the Minster of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke

The chairman of IPMAN, Mr. Olumide Ogunmade, said 99,000 litres of kerosene had been distributed through six stations at the official rate of N50 per litre. Speaking at a ceremony marking the official flag off of the sale in Ibadan, he said Nigeria must move beyond its present position and embrace technological advancement in the energy sector.

He said: “I want to use this opportunity to appeal to the Federal Government to expedite action on the development of linear energy, which is now embraced by many countries of the world. We appreciate what the government is doing to ensure that kerosene is available to the masses, but the linear energy is cheaper, affordable and friendly to the environment.

“The world is driving towards this means of energy and Nigeria, being a leader in petroleum products supplies, should be in the forefront. The government should lead the masses into this new trend by giving enough awareness and ensure that Nigerians are not left out.”

PoliticsGov Ajimobi Swears In New Commissioners, Replies Critics by pumpingmachine(op): 5:14pm On Nov 11, 2013
Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State, today (Monday) swore in 12 newly-appointed commissioners. He charged them to them to exhibit high level of integrity, commitment and service to humanity.

The commissioners comprised five members of the former cabinet and seven new ones. One of the new commissioners, Princess Oyefunke Oworu, is a former Special Adviser to the Governor on Trade, Investment and Cooperative, while Prince Gbade Lana was the Chairman of the State Library Board before his appointment as a commissioner.

Those recalled included Mr. Adebayo Ojo, Mr. Dapo Lam-Adesina, Mr. Zacheaus Adelabu, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin and Princess Adetutu Adeyemi-Aigbe, while the five new ones were Prof. Solomon Olaniyonu, Hon. Adewale Olujide, Engr. Adedeji Akande, Mr. Umar Alao and Mr. Abiodun Atanda.

Speaking at the ceremony held at the Executive Council Chamber of the Governor’s Office, Ajimobi said that the appointment of the commissioners was based on their educational background, individual track records and good characters, political and religious background, party recommendations and the belief of his administration in aggressiveness, assertiveness, adaptability and consolidation of its achievements.

Reacting to insinuations that his new cabinet was made up of children of traditional rulers and elite, the governor said the new commissioners were appointed based on their individual merits and not necessarily where they came from or their family background.

He chided the opposition for launching unnecessary attack on his administration in order to score cheap political point.

"The opposition will always say something. In fact, it will be unfair of them if they don’t criticize us. That is why they are there but our own responsibility is to do the job while they continue to criticize. The world is for those who strive hard and not for those who sit back and criticize.

"We remember when we conceived the idea of constructing the fly over at Mokola, they said `Oh, you cannot do it; it’s never done’. When we started, they said we could not do it. Later on, they said they were the ones who had earlier dreamt about it, even though it was first thought about in 1976 and these same people came to say they thought about it. But we came around and we did it and they said it would not work but we accomplished it,’’ he said.

Governor Ajimobi, while thanking the former commissioners, said that they contributed their quotas towards the development of the state, adding that his administration would continue to embrace politics of development.

He added that his administration would continue to maintain credibility, integrity and quality to take the state to greater height.

"We believe that Oyo State must be taken to a higher level than we met it. We believe we want Oyo State to be a proud state and be seen and counted among the comity of modern states in Nigeria,’’ he said.

He expressed confidence in the newly appointed commissioners.

He said: "You are in the second phase of the ship and we believe you have enough capabilities and strength to be able to sail it through. I hope you will contribute commendably to this administration. Those who are lucky to be back, I commend you. Those who are new, I challenge you and I believe you will find me friendly if you work very hard; if you don’t work hard, I am not a nice person.

"Be reminded that what you do, they will criticize you but what is important is to make sure that you give in your best and if you strive hard enough, you will succeed,’’ he said.

Nairaland GeneralPoor Turn Out At Mtn's Loud In Naija Tour In Ibadan by pumpingmachine(op): 11:08am On Nov 11, 2013
MTN's Loud In Naija Tour kicked off last Friday in the city of Ibadan with fewer than expected number of people attending the show held at the Tennis Court of the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba.

Residents who attended the event said the organizers failed to publicize the event very well.

"I think they didn't publicize it well enough," Daniel said. He added: "It was as if the show was organized for the staff of the company who are in Ibadan because all around me, all I could see were people who wore MTN-branded T-shirts."

To attend the concert, the network asked its subscribers to send their names, age and location to a short code after which they would receive confirmation to attend. But some MTN subscribers in the city who spoke to IBPulse.com said they didn't receive any confirmation message from the network.

"I sent the details on Tuesday but I didn't get any message from MTN. I think something is wrong with the platform," Segun said.

"I think something like is bound to happen with such over reliance on a technology that has failed before. They would have had a great show if they had put up billboards at strategic locations across the city or gone on air to ask their subscribers to come to the venue with their SIM packs or something like that," he said.

The organizers also made frantic efforts to salvage the situation but it was too late to get more people to attend, this was worsened by the ongoing strike called by the lecturers thus making students of the University of Ibadan unavailable to attend the show.

The event was anchored by MC Elenu and featured some of Nigeria's hottest musicians.

PoliticsEnugu First Lady Is Suffering From Depression, Says Human Rights Commission by pumpingmachine(op): 11:18am On Nov 09, 2013
he National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has confirmed that the wife of Enugu State Governor, Clara Chime, is battling with occasional "hallucinations and depression". It however said she is conscious of her environment and relates well with those she encounters.

Professor Bem Angwe, NHRC's Executive Secretary, revealed this yesterday while releasing his agency's preliminary report on its ongoing investigation into a petition by the governor's wife.

She petitioned the commission, complaining of rights abuses, including being allegedly held incommunicado by her husband against her wish.

Angwe said he led a team of the commission's investigators to Enugu on Thursday to ascertain the true position of things. He said in the course of the commission's investigation, the team had private and group interactions with the Governor, Sullivan Chime, his wife, his mother-in-law, Mrs Patience Igwe, and some other relatives of the couple.

According to him, the First Lady is suffering from some medical conditions; that she has had to stay in a medical facility and that she had lost confidence in the medical expert currently handling her case.

Angwe said: "The investigating team held a five-hour meeting with Governor Chime, Mrs Chime, Dr. Jide Chime (the governor's sibling), Dr. Aham Agumoh (who has been treating Mrs Chime) and Tony Igwe (the complainant's elder brother) during which the complainant had an opportunity to state her case and also respond to the issues raised by her husband.

"Dr. A. Uzegu, a London-based consultant psychiatrist and forensic examiner, who is the doctor the complainant prefers, also joined the meeting through teleconference.

"Both parties have agreed that Mrs Chime has medical challenges, but have disagreement over how to handle her medical condition. The complainant told the commission that she has lost confidence in the physician presently handling her condition and no longer wants him to treat her.

"She further requested to have medical opinion of other medical doctors acceptable to her. Both parties have agreed that the commission assemble a team of independent medical experts to review her medical condition and advice on further steps to be taken in respect of her treatment".

PoliticsFG To Re-introduce Toll Gates On Lagos-ibadan Expressway And River Niger Bridge by pumpingmachine(op): 8:01am On Nov 08, 2013
The federal government of Nigeria has revealed plans to reintroduce the popular toll gates along selected major highways and bridges including the Lagos-Ibadan expressway and the new bridge across River Niger at Asaba-Apakun.

Nigeria's Minister of Works, Mike Onolememen, revealed this yesterday while speaking in Abuja at a forum on roads and bridges. He said the policy would enable government to grow the economy, bring services to the communities and ensure safety of road-users.

“Currently, the Federal Government does not have enough resources to keep the roads and bridges on good state at all the times, as a result, it is attracting additional investment by increasing the role of the private sector in the design, construction, management, maintenance and upgrading of the federal roads and bridges network through Public-Private Partnership (PPPs). Toll revenue will make it possible,” he noted.

It would be recalled that most of the federal roads across the country were in the past subjected to tolling, which were at the time collected by the authorities of the then Federal Ministry of Works and Housing. Unfortunately, the same tollgates were later dismantled by former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo-led civilian administration following reported cases of massive corruption in the system.

The minister also stated that government is now trying to correct this past mistake, hence it has begun series of consultations, including the stakeholders’ forum. He said after the wider society has submitted its reports on the workability of the policy, government will come up with a final document, which shall be sent to the Federal Executive Council for approval and the President will assent to it.

According to the minister, when the policy is fully operational, key benefits of the tolling policy will include, improving the quality and safety of Nigerians, as there will be thousands of kilometers of world-class roads added to the road network, encouraging international best practices coupled with affordability for road-users and provision of incentives for further private investments.

He said that concessionaires will change the tolls and they will be responsible for the building and maintenance of the roads, even as government will give preference to tolling by established, experienced and reputable private firms.

On when the concessionaire will start charging toll, the minister stressed that it may only be levied once a road is completed and integrated with the road network.

HealthNational Check-up Day Will Reduce Sudden Deaths - NMA by pumpingmachine(op): 6:51am On Nov 06, 2013
The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has called for a National check-up day to tackle the menace of sudden deaths in the country.

According to the National President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), the day is needed to intensify the campaign for healthy living and regular health check-up which he said are progressive strategies for addressing the ugly trend.

“On behalf of the NMA, I wish to restate our call on the executive and legislative arms of Government at local, state and federal government levels to create a separate day, at least six-monthly or once a year dedicated to free health check-up by Nigerian citizens under their jurisdiction," he said.

He mentioned the association’s recent survey that revealed that most primary and secondary healthcare systems in Nigeria lack adequate health human resource, basic healthcare facilities and services, as well as adequate funding and essential drugs.

Nairaland GeneralNew Owners Take Over Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company by pumpingmachine(op): 5:52am On Nov 06, 2013
Integrated Energy Distribution and Marketing Company has taken over the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, following its successful bid for the company that is in charge of electricity distribution to one of Africa's largest cities.

The official handover was performed by Vice President Namadi Sambo who warned that all the federal government would hesitate to sanction non-performing core investors taking the PHCN successor company.

He added that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Bureau of Public Enterprise will continue to monitor the operations of the 18 successor companies that took over the Power Holding Companies of Nigeria (PHCN).

"The reform and privatisation of the power sector are rightly focused on big picture, that is the impact on the economy as a whole and ultimately. In this regard privatisation must be seen as a necessary tool for the deregulation and opening up of hitherto government dominated sector of the economy to the private sector as well as divestiture of government interest in such sectors," Sambo said.

Responding, Babatunde Ayeni,Vice-Chairman of Integrated Energy Distribution and Marketing Company, said the company is aware of the enormous challenge of providing uninterrupted power supply. To achieve this goal he said the company is acquiring necessary infrastructures.

"We have employed the MERALCO company from Philippine with 102 years of experience to manage our technical facilities.

"We plan on massive human capital development and advance technological input to ensure stable power in the country, adding that they will promote the culture of energy saving.

"We will adopt usage of smart meters, transparent billings and collection systems to improve and steady supply of power. We will continue to welcome suggestions for improvement," he said.

The Nigerian government has said it would complete the rehabilitation of failed sections of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway that had caused heavy traffic on the busy dual carriageway, making commuters and motorists plying the expressway to spend long hours while driving through some sections of the road in recent times.

The Federal Controller of Works, Lagos State, Olutoyin Obikoya who made the promise said that the Federal Ministry of Works has mobilised Reynolds Construction Company, RCC, to carry out urgent rehabilitation works on the bad sections within two weeks.

Obikoya, who is the engineers’ representative on the reconstruction of Lagos-Ibadan (section I), explained that the work would be done to ensure the road remained in good condition for a long time.

Movement on the road, he said, was also being slowed down by the construction of an additional lane on the Ibadan-bound stretch and the mounting of concrete median at some points.

“These activities require traffic diversion when necessary and work is carried out on five kilometres at a time. The ministry has been carrying out palliative works on the road and it is this construction work that is causing the traffic problem. They are working on the road and once it is done, movement will be better,” he said.

The construction company, he said, would not work during the public holiday, yesterday and today, but that after the holiday work would be intensified to ensure the job is completed within two weeks.

HealthProlonged Strike Connotes Irresponsibility On The Side Of Government – Doctors by pumpingmachine(op): 3:03pm On Oct 15, 2013
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has disclosed that the prolongation of the strike its members embarked on is a sign of irresponsibility on the side of the Nigerian government. Dr. Lawal Ismail Akinlade, Immediate Past National President, Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) stated this in an exclusive interview with HealthNewsNG.com.

“Sincerely speaking, continuation of the strike is just a sign of irresponsibility on the side of the government,” he said. He added that the demands of the association could be met within a short period of time.

He said the government has done nothing that could make the association to consider calling off the strike action.

He said: What has the government done that they believe that doctors should go back to call off the strike? They’ve not paid people’s salaries, they’ve not resolved the issue of residency training; they’ve resolved the issues in Enugu and Owerri. They’ve not addressed any of the issues to an extent that NARD will say the government has done its own part and the strike should be called off.”

“Let me tell you those issues in contention. Paying our people’s salaries is number one. Government is saying that people should work for up to 5 months without getting paid for it. Will the issue of salaries and arrears take the government about 4 months to resolve? It’s just the people in charge are not ready to help the masses,” he told HealthNewsNG.com.

He added the association cannot call of the strike based on just the promises made by the government which according to him had failed to fulfill previous promises earlier made with NARD.

He said: “When I was president, we had a meeting with the honorable minister in May last year and we had an agreement on some issues.”

“We’ve had meetings and agreements; we’ve had MoU signed. We have the communiqué released at the end of the meeting which they first denied its existence but we had to show them photographs before they could come to accept we had the agreement. That is the level it has degenerated to.”

He added that the association is not just fighting for the salaries and allowances of its members but is also fighting for the nation’s health sector.

“What we are fighting for is for our people, for Nigeria. Let us train specialists, let us train and train them well so that at the end of the day, we can access good and standard healthcare in Nigeria. If all the things are done which I think it shouldn’t take government 2 weeks to resolve, it is just a mere misplacement of priority,” he told HealthNewsNG.com.

Nairaland GeneralCollapsed Bridge Creates Border Zone In Ibadan - Story And Pictures by pumpingmachine(op): 11:26am On Oct 12, 2013
The road that leads to Amuloko area from Olorunsogo is probably one of the busiest in Ibadan as it is plied daily by several hundreds of thousands of Ibadan residents who live in various areas along the road which also leads to some parts of Ogun state.

Few weeks ago however, residents staying beyond the bridge at Ariyo area were cut off when the bridge collapsed. It wasn't an outright collapse as the bridge showed early signs of weakness but the signs were ignored leading to the eventual collapse.

When the bridge finally collapsed, members of the press besieged the area and had a field day at the spot. They joined members of the community in enjoining the government at all levels to come to the aid of the area.

The governor visited the area less than 24 hours after the bridge collapsed but more than ten days later, residents of the area said there is no clear cut picture of what the bridge's restoration plan would be and had decided to create a vibrant business center at the bridge.

When IBPulse.com visited the collapsed bridge last Thursday, the site was a beehive of business activities - artisans, market women, transport workers and other cadres of skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled workers and entrepreneurs have shifted their bases from their former roadside spots to the center of the once busy road.

To go from Olorunsogo to Amuloko, you would need to break the journey into two - from Olorunsogo to Ariyo Border, and from Ariyo Border to Amuloko. This has resulted in a hike in the cost of transportation.

For those who still desire an uninterrupted journey, the only direct option is a labyrinthine sojourn through the hinterlands and deeper cores of the various communities.

"You will have to go through Jegede area," a commercial motorcyclist told IBPulse.com.

The route is however long and the road is in a poor state thus many individuals prefer to get to the bridge, walk on the makeshift passage that was set up by Ona-Ara Local Government, and board another taxi or ride another bike from the other end.

This is similar to what happens at the Seme Border that links Nigeria and Benin Republic.

At the Ariyo makeshift border, the atmosphere is no longer that of a community that is angry with the government for abandoning it; it is that of an optimistic society that is alert to new business opportunities. The sets of people that are grumbling are those that are not making money from the bridge mishap and those that have been compelled to abandon their vehicles on either sides.

There is a local DJ playing loud music in the middle of the road and a middle-aged woman is frying bean cakes (akara) at relatively cheap price. The smile on her face suggests that business is going great.

Another woman is selling clothes for children that are not more than 10 years old while a bus is adorned with Nollywood posters and other paraphernalia. It is stocked with latest Yoruba movies and residents are called out to make affordable purchases.

Some agile male residents were also seen attempting to jump from one point to the other in what passersby described as suicidal but the young men were enjoying the risks.

The local government is setting up another makeshift bridge in order to ease the burden on the existing one which is expected to further increase during the Sallah holiday.

In addition to the promise made by the APC-led state government to repair the bridge, minister of state for the FCT and the highest ranking PDP member in Oyo state, Jumoke Akinjide has also promised to repair the bridge. Thus the person who does the bridge for the community may gain an edge at the 2015 polls.

Although the bridge repair is a strong political gain for whoever does it first, residents around the 'border' are not bothered; they just want to cross the makeshift bridge and go about their daily duties.

Nairaland GeneralNURTW Factions Clash In Ibadan High Court, Victims Hospitalised by pumpingmachine(op): 10:16pm On Oct 02, 2013
Legal proceedings at the Federal High Court, Adeoyo in Ibadan came to an abrupt end on Monday when two factions of the state branch of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) clashed outside the court premises.

The clash involved supporters of the ousted chairman of the union, Alhaji Lateef Akinsola popularly known as “Tokyo’’ and Alhaji Taofeek Oyerinde, popularly known as "Fele" who is the incumbent caretaker chairman of the union in Oyo state.

The clash occurred barely after the case of contempt of court was adjourned by Justice Abimbola Obaseki-Adejumo

A team of policemen outside the court premises fired canisters of tear gas to curtail the violence thus resulting in pandemonium.

Mr Yomi Ogunlola, the counsel representing the caretaker committee, described the clash as a show of shame that should not have been allowed to take place.

“At the last sitting on June 24, the court ruled that Mr Michael Lana representing the caretaker committee should withdraw from the suit because he had earlier represented Akinsola in a sister case.

“I was recently briefed to take over from him in this contempt of court proceeding.

“All that took place in court today was the application for change of counsel and the matter was adjourned to 21 October.

“However, what we are seeing outside now is a big surprise to me. This should not be allowed to happen in a civilised society,” he said.

He expressed disappointment in the police for not being able to prevent the violence.

“I am disappointed because the police from the outset were out there to maintain peace. Why should it degenerate to this level if the police were truly at work?

“As you can see, proceedings in the court had been disrupted because of the teargas fired. It should not have gotten to this level,” he said.

Akinsola, however, accused the Oyerinde faction of being responsible for the clash.

“My supporters were staying away from them, but they went over to my people and started beating them. I am worried that they may have injured or killed one of my boys and to think that the police were present makes it sad.

“If the police knew they would take sides, it would have been better they did not come. What is the importance of the armoured vehicle they brought?

“They could not even arrest one person to serve as a deterrent,” he said.

But speaking with NAN, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Christopher Luke, said that he was inside the court and came out when he heard some noise.

“I got down and saw that the whole place had been disorganised which made me to order that teargas be released.

“I wouldn’t know which of the parties started the fight, but we have been able to calm the situation,” he said.

Akinsola was in court because the state government was yet to abide by a court judgment which directed that he should be reinstated as the chairman of the union. Those wounded were taken to University College Hospital, Ibadan, for medical attention.
