HealthBanning Alcohol & Cigarettes At Motor Parks Would Increase Suicide In Nigeria by pumpingmachine(op): 11:57am On Oct 01, 2013
A cross section of smokers in Nigeria said they are more concerned about the quality of life they live and are less worried about living more years. This according to them is why they keep smoking and drinking alcoholic beverages despite the strong warnings that such lifestyles could put their lives at great risk.

Sulaimon Oladokun, a commercial motorcycle rider in Ibadan, Nigeria told HealthNewsNG.com he has a lot to worry about in his life. But anytime he drinks alcohol, he is able to set aside his worries.

"My brother, what is the essence of living very long when you are not happy?” he asked. “Whenever I drink my Regal Dry Gin, I get high and for that moment I am happy. If it will remove 5 years from my life, so be it. As long as I get some happiness, I am satisfied.”

Chinedu is from the south east region of Nigeria. He said he once preached against smoking and alcohol consumption. But when he couldn't get a good job and had to contend with pressures from all sides daily, a friend recommended alcohol and cigarettes.

"What many don't know is that cigarettes and alcohol are the only affordable options for a poor Nigerian under stress apart from God. If you don't have money, you live in a hostile community and things are not working well, you have two last resorts – commit suicide or suppress the pressure with alcohol.

"Look at me; I'm a graduate but no job. I had to come to the south west where I am now an Okada man in order to make ends meet. There are many Okada riders with worse stories. When I see them smoking, I don't tell them to stop because of my personal experience," he said.

However, the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has identified excessive alcohol intake as a major cause of road accidents in Nigeria and has outlawed drinking and driving.

Experts however believe the central roles that smoking and drinking are playing in the lives of transport workers in Nigeria will make it almost impossible for the commission or government to really implement such ban policy.

"As petrol is to the car, so is alcohol to the transport workers. Do you think it is a mere coincidence that there are more sellers of cigarettes, hemp, local gins and cheap alcoholic beverages at our motor parks than elsewhere? Transport workers cannot function properly without them. Banning them would significantly increase the rate of suicides in Nigeria," Chinedu said.

Manufacturers of alcoholic beverages are aware of the strong bond that exists between transport workers in Nigeria and cheap alcoholic beverages. This has led to the emergence of several brands that attract buyers to the small sachets of drinks at rock bottom prices as low as NGN20.

Brands like Sabrina and Regal are making millions daily from purchases in what experts believe is a smart business move.

The medical implications of the ubiquitous nature of cheap alcoholic drinks will however increase the number of alcoholics and could raise the incidence of many medical conditions. Liver disorders positively correlate with alcohol intake; while smoking could also significantly increase an individual's risk of developing lung cancer.

But the popular notion among Nigerian smokers and drinkers is that everything in life has associated risks. They believe more emphasis should be placed on enjoying life and not just prolonging it.

Chinedu and others who believe they didn't commit suicide because of cigarettes and alcohol ask question that efforts aimed at tackling cigarette smoking and alcohol abuse need to provide answers in order to win the war against nicotine and alcohol.

They prove what we already know that sticks and shots are not entirely a medico-social issue; they represent the nexus of a constellation of problems in the society that cannot be solved with bans.

Health4 Nothern States Responsible For Most Cases Of Polio by pumpingmachine(op): 7:55am On Sep 04, 2013
Dr. Abdulrahman Tunji Funso, Chairman, Nigeria National Polio Plus Committee (NNPPC) has announced Nigeria has recorded 50 per cent reduction in the number of Wild Polio Virus (WPV) cases.

According to him, the nation has recorded only 43 confirmed cases in 9 states as at August 9, 2013 against the 81 cases it recorded in 11 states within the same period last year.

He added that Kano, Borno, Yobe and Bauchi states are responsible for about 84 per cent. He added that the high incidence in the four northern states is connected to the activities of Islamic sect, Boko Haram.

“It remains a challenge for the country that about 200,000 children are still missing the three doses of polio vaccine needed to prevent the deadly virus. The danger is that for every polio infection we allow to happen anywhere in the country, it puts the whole country and the world at the risk of new spread,” Funsho warned.

Concerning the southern part of Nigeria, he said no case of WPV has been recorded.

"No case has been recorded in the south so far, but new cases in the north equally put us all at risk. Which is why we are still appealing for collective support to tackle polio disease through continuous routine immunisation and fund support," he said.

“Nigeria has no business being among countries that are yet to eradicate polio. Nigeria has eradicated Type 2 and Type 3 strains of the WPV said the country is currently faced with the challenges of eradicating Type 1. It will be embarrassing if the country is the last among the three countries to eradicate polio."

SportsHome Advantage Is Killing Football In Nigeria - Stanley Onuegbu by pumpingmachine(op): 6:35am On Aug 30, 2013
Stanley Onuegbu, central defender at El-Kanemi Warriors has decried the negative impact that home advantage has on the Nigerian Premier League.

Speaking after his side lost 0 - 2 in Ibadan to the Oluyole Warriors, Shooting Stars Football Club of Ibadan, Onuegbu said referees should not be concerned with who is "at home" or "away".

He told Supersport: “The referees should strive at all times to allow the beautiful game to flow irrespective of which of the sides are at home or away."

When El-Kanemi Warriors and Shooting Stars locked horns in Ibadan, Raphael Musa and substitute, Osaguona Ighodalo scored at the 52nd and 70th minutes thus giving the Oluyole Warriors the maximum three points from maximum points.

“It was a good game that both sides would have walked out the pitch embracing themselves except the referee’s unfair calls which killed the game for us. 3SC's first goal was disputable but the referee allowed it to stay however their second goal was good and we were confused while he decided to disallow our own goal.

“The match rightly would have ended 2-1 in favour of the home side and we won’t be feeling cheated as we at present feel. We’ve decided to take the defeat in good faith and march on in our aspiration to take over the top spot on the log.

“We just suffered a momentary setback in that direction but I’m confident we’ll recover the points in our next home game against Kaduna United in Maiduguri.

"We’ve given our words to the government and management to fight for a ticket to the continent in the ongoing league and we’re determined towards achieving the laudable goal,” he told supersport.com.

Kamil Akinlabi, honourable representing Oyo in the Federal House of Representatives has declared that the All Progressive Congress (APC) is sure of victory in Oyo state. According to him, the party has no opposition in the state.

"There is no other party in Oyo State. We have no opposition. Where is the opposition against APC? We don’t have any opposition against us,"he told Nigerian Tribune.

Concerning the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he said the party is extensively divided in Oyo state.

"Which PDP? Is it the PDP of Teslim Folarin, PDP of Alao-Akala or the PDP of Jumoke Akinjide, which of the PDP? So, a fractionalised party cannot confront us, we don’t have any opposition. Already, we are taking maximum advantage of their crisis.

"Our camp is growing in leaps and bounds everyday. By the time they wake up to mend fences among themselves, they won’t see their supporters again," he said.

PoliticsNo Escort For Oyo NURTW Chairman - Police by pumpingmachine(op): 6:03pm On Aug 28, 2013
The Nigerian Police has said it is not providing escorts for Alhaji Taofeek Oyerinde, Oyo state chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

According to DSP Olabisi Clet-Ilobanafor, spokesman of the Oyo state command of the Nigerian Police Force, many aggrieved members of the union had written petition against the force for providing police escorts for the NURTW chieftain.

“There is no iota of truth in what is being indicated here that two policemen were given to Oyerinde as escorts. Policemen were deplored to the NURTW building, not as escorts, but for security purposes due to the protracted NURTW crises that had been rocking the state," she said.

“But for the deployment of the policemen there, the place would have continued to be a battle ground as it used to be. However, the police command thought it wise that posting policemen there would definitely deter disgruntled NURTW members from turning the place to a theatre of war."

She urged the angry faction to guard against breaking law and order, adding that they can channel their petition through the right channels if they want a proper investigation.

“If they want anything investigated, it is not enough to allege. Let them address a copy of their grievances to the Commissioner of Police so that each allegation could be treated on merit.

“We want to tell them that if a hungry man becomes angry and he breaks the law of the land, the law will take its course on that person. We advise them not to take laws into their hands because this will mean that they want to confront the law.

“It is better for them to go through proper channels than issuing subtle threats because if anything goes wrong, they would be made to face the full wrath of the law,” she said.

HealthNigerian Pharmacists Accuse Health Minister Of Favoring Doctors Over Others by pumpingmachine(op): 1:48pm On Aug 28, 2013
Olumide Akintayo, President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), has accused the Nigerian minister for health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu of favoring doctors over healthcare professionals. He stated this in a chat with Guardian.

Responding to the directive issued by the health minister ordering all striking professionals to resume work immediately, he said he (the minister) would never say that to his colleagues (doctors).
“The fundamental issue is that there is no equity in the health sector. It is not right for the minister to ask the health workers to go back to work when the issues they raised have not been addressed. If we were his professional colleagues, doctors, he would not have said that," Akintayo said.

He added that members of JOHESU will leave no stone unturned to ensure that the inequity in the health sector is brought to the attention of the general public.

He said: “We should do everything possible to make sure that consumers of health should not continue to suffer. How can we do this? It is to ensure equity, for as long as there is discriminatory treatment we shall continue to contend with strikes and distortions in health services."

HealthGod Is In Support Of Family Planning - Prof. Ladipo by pumpingmachine(op): 7:40pm On Aug 18, 2013
Professor Oladapo Ladipo, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Association for Reproduction and Family Health (ARFH), has stated that God is in support of family planning since He frowns at uncontrolled child birth.

He said: "God himself does not support producing children you cannot cater for. God does not tell us to bear children that we will be seeing die under-nourished and leading unproductive lives."

He therefore urged African nations to intensify efforts aimed at promoting and enforcing birth control. This according to him is essential to ensure that African families only give birth to the number of children they can satisfactorily take care of. He stated this in an interview with Vanguard newspapers.

“There is great wisdom in having only the number of children you can provide for. We need a population moderation and management policy because people should not just be having as many children as they want.

“It is important for Nigerians and indeed Africans generally to recognize the need to have just the number of children we can care for, rather than just reproducing and expecting God to take care of them. There is no reason for having children who are just languishing in abject poverty, roaming around, doing nothing productive,” he said.

Concerning the role of family planning in national development, he said most of the developed nations of the world are nations that promote family planning by regulating the number of children each family can give birth to.

He said: “We are just being deliberately blind to reality. It has been shown clearly in the Asian countries there is no country classified as developed that has not moderated its population. If one person is telling another to reproduce recklessly, to me, it is a crime to the state. It is a crime to just be reproducing recklessly and transferring the responsibility of looking after the children to somebody else”.
