Investigations are currently underway to identify a possible first case of the deadly Ebola virus in Lagos Nigeria. According to Reuters, Liberian man in his 40s is being tested for the deadly Ebola virus in Nigeria's commercial capital of Lagos, a megacity of 21 million people, the Lagos State Health Ministry said on Thursday. Ebola has killed 632 people across Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone since an outbreak began in February, straining a string of weak health systems despite international help. This would be the first recorded case of one of the world's deadliest diseases in Nigeria, Africa's biggest economy and most populous nation, with 170 million people and some of Africa's least adequate health infrastructure. Social media broadcast are also circulating informing people to stay away from the suspected hospital. Healthnewsng.com grabbed one of such messages which read: Please, do not go near First Consultants hospital in Obalende, Lagos State! The first case of Ebola Virus has been reported there. A Liberian was said to have come to Nigeria with it. FYI: Ebola is deadlier than AIDS!!!Please. Kindly forward to others as I did. Got dis info from a doctor. http://www.healthnewsng.com/2014/07/possible-first-case-of-ebola-under.html |

Jummy mine: i am a surgeon, and sincerely i am yet to meet a doctor who says the others who workin the health system are not important. the situation in nigeria is simply pathetic. we have developed a culture of not knowing our places, simply and short!your thought process is faulty, surgeon. You don't see any use for other healthcare professionals and u believe they should be left out of the system. You made reference to d strike of the Johesu members at Ife. Well, I heard about it and how successful it was. Even medical training was jeopardised and medical students had to stay at home! So don't come on Naira land and feed us with poo. I don't know of you've saved enough money to travel outside the country like your colleagues, I've been out severally and I always shake my head for the Nigerian healthcare system. I know johesu has its excesses, but the root of the matter is overbearing attitude of the NMA and its members who believe that being a doctor is the biggest achievement they could make in their lives. There should be room for everybody to grow, in fact we should encourage everyone to grow so that the industry could grow as well. Right there in Ife, nurses give doctors a hard time, pathologists and scientists exchange blows regularly while quality of pharmaceutical drugs procured outside cannot be guaranteed when pharmacists are on strike. You all need to come together and stop being driven by egos. Patients are dying at alarming rate and you all swore to save lives...do just that |

Nigeria’s largest telecoms network MTN has told HumanIPO it is not responsible for the hike in the prices of the various denominations of its recharge cards. On Monday, the network’s subscribers across the country were informed of a 10 per cent increment in the prices of various recharge card denominations, with the NGN100 denomination rising to NGN110 and the NGN200 denomination rising to NGN220, while subscribers who want to purchase higher denominations are now being compelled to pay additional charges. However, MTN Nigeria public relations and protocol manager Funso Aina told HumanIPO the network is not aware of the hike and did not give the directive. “Any variance from the authorised face value of recharge cards is without MTN’s knowledge or authority,” he said. “The cost of every recharge card is the value stated on it. Any third party selling recharge cards at a value at variance with the face value is acting illegally.” Cities affected by the increment include Lagos, Abeokuta, Ibadan, Abuja, Owerri, Port Harcourt and Kano. Aina said there is a distribution structure for recharge cards that all partners must adhere to. Prior to this official response from the network, many subscribers believed the hike was an attempt by the network to compel its subscribers to switch to various electronic platforms, such as ATMs and third-party apps that have QuickTeller functionalities, since the extra charge does not affect those that recharge using these platforms. On social media and forums such as Nairaland, the network’s subscribers have expressed their dissatisfaction with the price hike and a cross-section of aggrieved subscribers have called upon the regulatory body, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), to intervene and sanction MTN. The umbrella body of Nigerian doctors, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike on Saturday December 14, 2013 due to the inability of the federal government to meet the demands of the association. "For over five months now, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), the umbrella body for all medical and dental practitioners in Nigeria, has recurrently engaged the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Health, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, on issues bordering on some health sector challenges, workplace conditions and the conditions of service of doctors," the association said in a statement made available to HealthNewsNG.com It added: "On the 2nd September, 2013 the Nigerian Medical Association issued a 21day ultimatum to the Federal Government of Nigeria to address the issues tabled by NMA. "However, based on the understanding reached following the intervention of the Honourable Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu CON, the NMA decided to extend her ultimatum by four weeks at her emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on September 22, 2013. "Following the expiration of the additional four (4) weeks grace granted to the Federal Government, the NMA again magnanimously extended twice the ultimatum on account of the Government’s constitution of a Presidential Committee and promise to speedily resolve the issues contained in the requests of the NMA. The association said the government only carried out a re-constitution and inauguration of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCAN) but neglected issues about the workplace conditions of the doctors. It said: "The attention of the government to other issues bordering on workplace conditions and injustice meted out to doctors in their conditions of service and funding/ infrastructural and equipment upgrade of the health sector have not received any significant attention." In the statement signed by the president of the association, Dr Osahon Enabulele, it said it cannot extend the grace period any further. It said: "On account of the foregoing, it may be difficult to guarantee further extension of the grace period and consequently, industrial harmony in the health sector, especially as the December 14, 2013 deadline issued to the Federal Government to concretely resolve the demands of the NMA draws closer." It stated further that the leadership of the federal ministry of health is not serious with efforts aimed at averting the strike and urged citizens to blame the ministry for the aftermath of the industrial action. "Efforts by the NMA to engage the leadership of the Federal Ministry of Health even at this eleventh hour collapsed following the unserious approach and attitude of the leadership of the Federal Ministry of Health who seem to be less bordered about the potential crisis which may erupt in Nigeria’s health sector from Saturday, December 14, 2013. "Therefore the Nigerian Medical Association most distressingly alerts the entire nation about the imminent collapse of health services across the entire country given the apparent levity and lack of concrete commitment so far exhibited by the Government through the Federal Ministry of Health," NMA said. http://www.healthnewsng.com/2013/12/nigerian-medical-association-to-embark.html |
Nigeria's premier university, the University of Ibadan has become the latest academic institution to pull out of the ongoing strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). According to the Governing Council of the university, academic activities would resume on the 4th of January, 2014. The decision, the council said was based on the directives of the Committee of Pro-Chancellors of Federal Universities and the National Universities Commission. However, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) said strike still on. Mr. Olujimi Olukoyam, the registrar and secretary to the council at the UI, signed and released the official university bulletin on December 6, 2013, Friday. In the document the governing council explained that the re-opening became necessary in view of the consideration of all matters relating to the on-going ASUU strike, at its recent meeting. “Consequent upon the directives of the CPC which directed the Vice-Chancellors to re-open universities for academic and allied activities to commence, the management on Tuesday, directed the deans and directors to open resumption register for academic staff willing to resume work to sign, on or before December 4, 2013. “At its extra-ordinary meeting held on Wednesday, December 4, the school’s governing council deliberated on all the actions taken and ratified by the Committee of Provost, Deans and Directors and ratified them. The Senate at its special meeting held on December 4, also considered the revised academic calendar for the remaining part of the second semester of 2012/2013 session proposed by the Committee of Provost, Deans and Directors and approved,” the bulletin stated. The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan, have announced a suspension of the strike its members embarked upon on Independence Day, October 1, 2013. According to the association, it would suspend the industrial action for one month in order to make room for further negotiation with the stakeholders. The association is protesting against what it described as anomalies in the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) that was recently introduced by the federal government of Nigeria. The president of the association, Dr. Babatunde Babasanya said the strike was suspended out of respect for some eminent Nigerians who offered to mediate the impasse between the Association and the federal government. The mediators, he said, included the UCH authorities and well meaning Nigerians, who have been appealing to the association to suspend the strike and give room for intervention. “It is so sad that the IPPS scheme has caused most of our members to lose part of their August and September salaries. Some were paid as cooks, security men, cleaners and the likes, while others did not even collect any salary for these months. We were even shocked that when our November salary was paid, the shortfalls were not corrected,” he said. The doctors wanted the August and September salaries regularised, as well as assurance that anomalies would not reflect in the December salaries if they prevent resumption of the strike. “We are not asking the government for excessive money. This is our salary which we have worked for. We cannot cope further with this financial hardship that has befallen us. “The government has blatantly refused to yield to our request but we are suspending it for peace to reign. The Federal Government has been shortchanging UCH authorities – N100 million every month since January – and this has been hampering the progress of this institution,” he said. The governor of Cross River state of Nigeria, Liyel Amoke, has suspended 20 members of the state's executive council for failing to participate in the 4km walk organized by the state government to mark the 2013 World AIDS Day in the state. In a statement issued by the state government, the suspended cabinet members were ordered to hand over to their Permanent Secretaries immediately and will remain suspended without pay. Those affected by the suspension include the state's Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Attah Ochinke; Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Etim Takis Kaifas; Commissioner for Social Welfare, Mrs. Edak Iwuchukwu; Commissioner for Women Affairs; Patricia Enderly; Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Sandy Onor, and Commissioner for Agriculture Mr. James Aniyom; Others are Special Adviser on Project Monitoring and Evaluation, Mr. Eja Dons Eseghe; Commissioner for Water Resources Elemi Etowa; Special Adviser on Tourism Wilfred Usani, Special Adviser on Religious Affairs; Eyo Okpo Ene; Special Adviser on Special Duties; Mr. Fabian Okpa. The rest are Special Adviser Forestry and Biodiversity, Ntufam, Gabe Odu-Orji; Special Adviser on Investment, Dr. Gerald Adah; Special Adviser of Political and Legislative Matters, Mr. Fred Osim; Special Adviser Legal, Mr. Mark Obi; Special Adviser, NGO, Mrs. Margaret Johnson Ebokpo; Special Adviser on ICT, Mr. Odo Effiong; Special Adviser on Mineral Resources; Mr. Effiong Bassey; Special Adviser Strategy and Planning , Prof. Idem Temple; Special Adviser on Debt Management, Fransicea Nkoyo Effiong. Speaking during the walk, the governor said just like malaria, anyone who is infected with the virus and is not treated will die. He said: “AIDS disease is like malaria disease and those who are affected have to be treated or they will die. When you have malaria, you do not go to church or prayer house and same is with AIDS and if detected on time, do the test and if it is positive, take medicine and will be normal like any other human being”. “Don’t see AIDS as strange and create fear because it can be managed and is not written on faces. It is more manageable than cancer today but those who have cancers will come out and say they have cancer but not people with HIV/AIDS. “We need to do more and tell people how it can be contracted and how it can be treated and we should look forward to a time when there will be no AIDS walk and AIDS Day. “For this to succeed, we should enact a law and ensure it is observed in the urban area where the prevalence is high. The cost of HIV on the economy is high and we should ensure it does not increase by creating awareness for the people to be responsive and responsible”. Olatide Akinkunmi, a 29-year old man has been arrested by the Oyo State Police Command for being in illegal possession of a data machine that belongs to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The police said the suspect was arrested at his residence located in Isake, Ogbomoso. According to the state Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Indabawa, the suspect was arrested when police detectives stormed his home on November 28 after tip-off from a member of the public. The recovered INEC customised data machine was a Zinox laptop with model No C4106, product no C4106-CD, and serial number 8000609826. "When I called the attention of the man who brought it for me to this, he said there was no problem and that the man who wanted to sell it had been using it for the past one year without any issues," he said. Mr. Akinkunmi added that he got into trouble when the person he resold it to dragged him to the police after the suspect failed fix a fault in the system's keyboard. "That was when the police invited me and things started magnifying. I bought the system for N20,000 and resold it for N26,000," he noted. Officers of the Nigerian Army and policemen were involved in a shootout in the ancient city of Ibadan with casualties recorded on both sides. The fracas started on Wednesday night, when a police woman in mufti raised alarm that she was being attacked by two men on a motorcycle. Policemen on duty went to help her. But in the course of protecting their colleague, one of the policemen allegedly shot one of the two men on the motorcycle on the ankle. Unknown to them, the two men were soldiers, who later reinforced and allegedly stabbed a policeman on the buttock. Thus setting the stage for a reprisal attack. There were sporadic gunshots at Mokola area which forcing passers-by and traders in the area to scamper to safety. An eye witness said: “The incident started when 10 soldiers stormed the station and beat policemen on duty in retaliation for an attack on one of them on Wednesday night by the police carrying out ‘stop and search’ in front of the station.” The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olabisi Ilobanafor, said the matter has been resolved and the situation is now under control. He said: “The issue actually started on Wednesday night when two men on a motorcycle had disagreement with a police woman who was in mufti. The woman called the attention of the policemen on duty to come to her rescue. They fired warning shots into the air. One of the two men who were later discovered to be military men was injured. Later, his colleagues arrived with cudgels and stabbed a policeman on the buttock. Another soldier wanted to stab him again but was resisted”. “About 3pm yesterday, some military men stormed the station beating and injuring policemen on duty. Warning shots were fired. We reinforced from the command to make sure the matter did not get out of hand. We thank God that nobody died in the process. The injured ones both policemen and soldiers were later taken to hospital. “Authorities of both the police and Army came together and resolved the matter as a family. This is one of isolated cases we had. We are the same family. We should work together to fight criminals not to fight ourselves”.
