Natasha Akpoti, a senatorial candidate for Kogi Central Senatorial District, seeking to contest on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), says Yahaya Bello, Governor of Kogi State, wants to “assassinate” her. She stated this in a letter addressed to President Muhammadu Buhari entitled ‘Governor Yahaya Bello Wants to Kill Me'. According to Akpoti, the reason the Governor wants to assassinate her is that she “dared to step out to give expression to my ambition to represent my Senatorial zone in this election”. She urged the President to call the Governor to order, as many of her supporters had been killed. THE LETTER IN FULL: Dear President Muhammadu Buhari, As Nigerians head for the polls, I am constrained to draw your attention urgently to the naked and arbitrary show of power, orchestrated murders and the embarrassment Governor Yahaya Bello has become through various atrocities in Kogi State which led your party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), to an unprecedented embarrassment in the state. In clear and unambiguous terms, Mr. President, Governor Yahaya Bello, has perfected plans to assassinate me for daring to step out to give expression to my ambition to represent my senatorial zone in this election. This did not start today. As a matter of fact, on Friday, 17th of August 2018, Governor Yahaya Bello threatened me in the presence of three of his closest aides; Mr. Jibril Momoh (Accountant General of Kogi State), Mr. Kabiru Onyene (Special Adviser on Domestic Matters) and Mr. Abdullahi Bello, a.k.a. Dollar (Chairman, APC Kogi state) to "abandon my political ambition or face dire consequences". This ordinarily would have passed without much worry. Unfortunately, many other recent developments have made it crucial for me to cry out that you kindly save my soul. Just yesterday Mr. President, two of my supporters were killed at my campaign. At this campaign, it was an organic crowd of genuinely loving people. I was immersed and buried in the love and embrace of very impoverished people who desired a paradigm shift. Some of these people paid the supreme price yesterday from the brutal hands of Governor Bello's thugs! Their pictures are here. In only a few weeks that my campaign gained momentum morphing into a movement for the liberalization of Kogi Central, some of my other supporters that have been murdered are Mr. Ojo Enesi, Youth leader of my Campaign Organization in Obeiba, Ihima of Okehi Local Government Area in Kogi state. He was dragged out of his house at about 12:30am on the night of Saturday, the 12th of January 2019 and brutally murdered by a gang of APC thugs led by one Ojo Inna who pulled the trigger on late Enesi. This was followed by the battery, stabbing and butchering of 8 of my supporters by known APC thugs at about 9am on Friday, the 11th of February 2019 during a door-to-door campaign at Obeiba in Ihima, Okehi Local Government Area. This is besides those whose property have been damaged and those who have been abducted. The spate of attacks continued on the 1st of February 2019 after one of my youth leaders in the Fulani community, Usman Abubakar, was abducted under the instigation of the Okehi Sole Administrator, Mr. Abdulraheem Ohiare, who on the orders. This particular unforced and reckless error would have sparked an ethnic clash between the Fulani and Ebira communities in Kogi Central but for the prompt and timely intervention of the Kogi Army Commander, Major General Njoku. Usman was released on the 12th of February after spending 12 days in a politically financed detention cell, all in a supposed democratic nation. The names of many victims not mentioned here, to save space and your precious time but who have suffered vicious attacks are well documented and have been reported to the Nigeria Police even as they have continued unabated. And as if the physical acts of violence were not enough, I have been at the receiving end of slanders and defamation on different occasions. http://saharareporters.com/2019/02/15/yahaya-bello-wants-kill-me-sdp-senatorial-candidate-natasha-akpoti-cries-out |
Eighteen parties will not be fielding presidential candidates in Saturday’s elections. These parties are: Congress of Patriots (COP) Alternative Party of Nigeria (APN) Legacy Party of Nigeria (LPN) Modern Democratic Party (MDP) Okowa Campaign AD Movement for The Restoration and Defence of Democracy (MRDD) New Generation Party (NGP) New Progressives Movement (NPM) Alliance for Democracy (AD) Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) Peoples Progressives Party (PPP) Socialist Party of Nigeria (SPN) United Peoples Congress (UPC) United Progressives Party UPP) Young Democratic Party (YDP) Youth Party (YP) Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) Democratic Alternative (DA) There are 91 registered political parties, out of which 73 parties are fielding presidential candidates, leaving 18 political parties not fielding presidential candidates. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on January 17 released its final list of presidential candidates. Among the 73 candidates, two parties; the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN) have issues although both parties are listed on INEC’s final list. ACPN has its name and the name of its candidate on INEC’s list but the party’s presidential candidate, Oby Ezekwesili, withdrew from the race even though the deadline for withdrawal and substitution had elapsed. SDP, on the other hand, has only its party name on INEC’s list because the party failed to send the name of its candidate, due to court cases. Some of the parties highlighted that finance was a hindrance to fielding candidates, while some said no one showed interest to run. PREMIUM TIMES could not reach others to highlight their reasons for not fielding presidential candidates. Danjuma Ali, the national chairman of MRDD, said the party, due to economic circumstances, had to stop. Initially, the party had a primary and he was the presidential candidate. He noted that after a review of the situation, the party decided to support the incumbent president, Muhammadu Buhari for a second term. “My party had a primary. Personally, I was the presidential candidate of the party. But subsequently, we sat down and looked at all what we intended to do. Looking at (that), we discovered that (what) we intend doing, cannot, particularly on the economic aspect, cannot survive without certain key infrastructures. “We discovered President Muhammadu Buhari is doing well, so, we decided to support him,” he said. On the other hand, the national secretary of AD, Akinboye Fasogbou, said no one showed interest and the person who did from the diaspora did not show up. He said although his party did not meet to take a unified decision, he could say the party was in support of Atiku Abubakar, being part of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) and Afenifere, who have both endorsed the candidacy of Mr Abubakar. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/313079-elections-18-political-parties-not-fielding-presidential-candidates.html |

Professor Monday Igbafen, suspended Chairman of the Ambrose Alli University (AAU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has indicted Ignatius Onimawo, Vice Chancellor of the university, in a N5.5billion Tertiary Education Trust Fund and NEEDS Assessment intervention funds scandal. Igbafen said this while addressing the press in Edo State, on the reason the institution suspended him. The University's disciplinary panel had found Igbafen guilty of sexual misconduct. He was accused of threatening to have sex with students for marks. However, he denied any wrongdoing, insisting he was being victimised for asking the VC to account for the N5.5billion the institution received from TETFUND and NEEDS. Igbafen also stated that the VC promoted his wife from the position of a typist to Lecturer 1, without having required qualifications. He said: “We challenged him to be open and transparent. You cannot move your wife from nowhere and make her a Lecturer I without a PhD and academic master’s degree. We have been on the matter and he has made attempts to compromise me as the chairman of the union, and I refused. “That led to his desperation that I should never be chairman of ASUU for the second time. “The university has collected more than N5.5billion for the past five years. From the TETFUND, he has received more than N3.4billion, while the money from NEEDS Assessment is more than N1.2billion. “The union is demanding how he has utilised these funds. Is it a sin to ask for how he has utilised our funds?” However, in response to the allegations, Edward Aihevba, spokesman for the university, said Igbafen was pronounced guilty of the accusation after a panel set up concluded the investigation in the case. Aihevba noted that the previous administration did not carry out the recommendations of the report submitted by the panel. Aihevba also explained that the wife of the VC possesses required credentials and qualifications before she was promoted. He said: “Professor Igbafen should not be shouting. He is afraid that he is sinking. He should face the music. The victim and her mother testified before a panel, but the former administration did not look into the report. “There are other things he did and at the appropriate time, he will be made to answer for them. “The VC’s wife entered the university as a young woman. She got her degrees and was converted by a former administration and not her husband. She got her PhD and was made Lecturer I.” http://saharareporters.com/2019/02/15/suspended-ASUU-chair-indicts-vc-n55billion-fraud |
