Ofodirinwa:
Government will never develop Igboland/Biafra

State, local, federal. Any plan that involves government action is no plan at all. If you yourself are not in the government, to think, plan and hope for the actions of government is an exercise in futility. The type of development that will work for us is one that is holistically private and profit led. Believe it or not, this is the type of development that built the great cities in America, and countless other developed countries. We have the most industrious culture and minds in the world, and this is no accident. We have everything it takes to develop our lands privately through contributions scalabled to each woman or man's capacity and ability.

My posts will highlight how this is possible. We should see government projects as generous add-ons, and not the foundation of our development because we have waiting for 50 years to no avail. Let the meal be severed with or without cake.

Very good submission

The first thing that comes to my mind is electricity...(to power the elevators)...then we can have high rises, as land will become an issue in future. We need land for agriculture and other things.

You are saying the bitter truth. Land will become an issue in the future and if we allow structures to just spring from nowhere and everywhere, we won't be having anywhere to farm, grow businesses and build factories. We won't have anywhere to go for leisure nor a place for wildlife. We need to think about the next 100years because we know what will happen if we keep growing at this steady rate, what will happen in the future.

I proposing that we build large housing estates in every state that can have 5million housing units in the form of skyscrapers and we either start selling or renting such facilities out.

These are big investments that can generate huge sums for the government and investors. For example, the chinese built Kilamba with 3.5billion dollars. Very beautiful city with very beautiful scenery. We can either lure foreign investors or we make our local billionaires invest in this line of business like the chagoury group is doing with Lagos. They can either make their money through leasing or outright sales of these properties.

If we do this in the 5 igbo states, then we will have solved one of the biggest future problems in the region. This will create more business for SMEs and we will have driven poverty out to an extent.

I had advise the state assemblies pass a law to make properties owners reduce the red earth in the environs by planting grass and trees or using concrete slabs to reduce the menace of the red earth and dust...as new neighbourhoods emerge...so as not to repeat what we have in the old neighbour hoods. With time all the old areas will be covered. That's how European cities started.

When will our states have this kind of roads with beautiful walkways. Mehn, we live in different planets o.

The state doesn't have the capacity to push it's own development with the monthly stipend it gets from the centre. If he gets 2000 "leviable" adults and use the money to drive economic expansion of the state, then sorry, I am in support.

How much do you think Imo state has and what does Imo state have that makes money for them?

Stop being emotional about anything. The only problem is the man asking for it.

I am happy he is able to do these things in his village and community at large. It is left for us to smartly capture these people and give them economic direction in the region for them to invest huge sums.

No matter what this man does, I think he is giving back to his homeland. That's all we have been praying for.

The statement of one man has been extrapolated to cover the whole region when in the real sense of it all, many do not see things the way a particular person sees it.

You and I know that no igbo state can drive development on its own owing to the present economic condition in the country today. As we can see other regions leveraging on unity to push their collective course.

The only reason they are begging for southeast unity is because they want the Anambra entrepreneurial spirit to also manifest in their states. Take a look at Imo (they only invest in prostitution aka hotels because Anambra people are not found there), Enugu (their overrated international floodport has failed because Anambra businessmen now use asaba airport in anticipation of the completion of the Anambra international airport. Ebonyi is still a rural, backward bushland where majority of their people break stones for a living. Abia is only lucky that some few multinationals choose to remain because of its proximity to PH despite the fact that Aba is the dirtiest town in africa where humans and animals are on the same level.

Look at how this guy insulted a whole tribe of which he thinks he is from.

That's the truth, the elites are causing more division than the people. They go to the upper chamber bickering like people who do not know each other. These division in high places is the major reason why they don't take us serious.

Instead of Enugu and Anambra to come together and oust kogi from settings, then we have our own agreement to share it for regional development. Nope, they are just myopic.

Igbos love these words:

We are dominating commerce in Abuja, Lagos, Jos and Kano.

We are dominating transport all over Africa.

We are dominating hotels and clubs.

We are dominating in WAEC and JAMB scores grin grin

We are the most educated in Nigeria ( Oh my God grin)

Now to the present realities, even if we have substantial amount of people doing these stuff all over the country, we have not dominated our own tuff. Why? We seem to love feeding from other people.

Passing WAEC and JAMB are the worst achievement we can give ourselves because as we all know, our students know next to nothing with those achievement. Since the primary and secondary education is controlled by the state (to an extent), why can't redesign our educational template to favour skills acquisition and mental development? Do we still need to call on God for that?

We keep churning job seekers in the name of graduates, lol. Funny people.

I will just keep mum and watch.

Achi4u and Xander85, you guys have the grasp of what our elite are. They are mere local champions with no true respect after their palatial fence.

If igboland will develop, we need to break the artificial boundaries and become one body to marshal a bigger developmental plan. The more we scream on top of our voice about the development the more they cover their ears with filth.

It is very possible to have a world class eastern region but can we sit down and say "let's do this?".

It is not going to be easy but we will see drastic changes if we do it right.

That's the point.

As the western governors are buying MMIA, why can't the SE governors buy AIIA Enugu...Get Igbos in diaspora with foreign partners and build world class international airport there. Also get all approvals so all flights can come to the east...even if it has to be one-weekly...until most easterns will learn to fly from Enugu and not Lagos or Abuja. Passengers from Delta and Benue could route their flights from Enugu instead of Lagos or Abuja which are farther.

No, they are planning to buy SUVs for all traditional rulers and gifting 50 communities with 100million each to build town halls and village square. If the investors you are trying to lure doesn't see any effort from you, he'll think you are not serious.

I was watching NAS daily on Facebook, do you know that a single individual made big organization to spend over a billion dollar in his village to become an industrial village. He didn't have the money but he was able to lure big investors to invest a billion dollars. Another lured 5billion dollars to build a city in his country. Not a loan but pure investments.

So even between ourselves we cannot generate up to 10billion dollars worth of investment to rebuild southeast and returns on such investments?

I might not be an economist but if a person can remodel and upgrade Onitsha market, it will generate thrice the amount the entire state generates in a month. We keep seeing things we need to do but we are refusing.

Aba needs overhauling. As in chase everyone out and redesign the city to its deserved taste. That could be Milan or Paris of Africa. They design clothing, shoes and everything. Shoes and clothing businesses are responsible for 10billionaires in the world today but we cannot organize such sector and get things going.

We need to let people know that we can be trusted in delivering high level goods and services by redesigning our pattern of development.

We are losing in many aspects because we are failing to organize ourselves and cut the Lagos and Abuja umbilical cord.

Western governors will be soon buy out MM airport in Ikeja. By far the busiest in Nigeria. Northerners will look for one thing to buy in Nigeria but we will still be building 1km road leading to nowhere or better put, beautify one roundabout in one village.

I think its the business class that's supposed to plan and execute business ideas in the region, this is because if we continue to wait for the governors, who themselves were not investors or businessmen before becoming governors, things might not change. But the political class must provide the enabling environment. If I plan an industrial park or a leading service in Enugu, without the government in support, Roads and other infrastructure will be lacking there, security might also be an issue.

But the one that really draws the clock back is the lack of power to produce goods and materials in competitive costs, by the time I fuel and maintain my generators, costs will surpass that of imported substitutes.

That's the painful truth Spyder. I have always told people that the government is highly responsible for the failed system because they fail to channel their works towards industrialization. They just want people to see that they can build 1km road and people will vote them.

There are strategic 1km roads that a governor will build that will push industrialization. There are strategic transport system and policies that will push market expansion, etc. We just feel we can't do much but when we look at it well there are so much that can be done.

Enugu is not yet good.

Imo is not yet good.

Abia isn't good.

Anambra is not yet good.

Ebonyi isn't there at all.

Those are basic truths we need to tell ourselves. We play politics every time but we stopped thinking. Kano economic summit held last year and Oodua economic summit held last year with the high and mighty in attendance. I don't care about their development because I know we have a greater driving force than them. The only problem igbos have is the patience to plan as a people but these governors plan based on their myopic mindsets. Just look at the nonsense policies they keep dishing out.

Do you know that igbos have at least 15million millionaires in naira that can drive the economy before we invite the whites or other ethnic groups? No, we don't know, we keep waiting for Chinese to locate us. If we can't utilize the human beings that we can handle, how can we utilize natural resources?

I am still saying this, if igboland isn't bigger than Niger state and it has over 35million people from the region, then I bet you, we are obviously getting everything wrong.

We keep pointing fingers to Abuja but no one seems to be pointing towards Owerri, Enugu, Awka, Abakaliki, and Umuahia.

Very funny people. Umahi went to go and build air conditioned stadium grin

What's your opinion about this Dave Umahi's concrete roads in Ebonyi state?

These roads are beautiful. Very good for the long run. We need to ask a question, does that road have a strong foundation? You know the type of soil we have in the east, if the roads do not have good foundation it will eventually wear away.

We need economic roads and forms of transportation. We need real sectors and not sectors only seen in books. We need to drive something, anything but we are not doing anything.

Igbos are funny people. We shout Ariaria market and Onitsha market but when you go there you are not seeing the hype. We need to sell a bigger identity than what we sold in the pre-60s.

The solution to our problem is that we need to engage our business men before we can have any substantial development in the region. We have not had any meaningful economic summit in the region. We have not told igbo businessmen that this where Enugu is going or what Ebonyi wants to achieve. Government can only show you where you can go.

We are failing in critical areas but since the roads are fine and hotels are built and little bit of eateries here and there, we are fine.

We the youths are to blame, we cannot call for economic summits and let's talk. The eastern region isn't too big for over 35million people to develop with strong and big economy.

People have money but they don't know how to invest in the region. Until you create an alternative that shows that the market in the region is 70million strong, then we will keep bickering all over the internet.

These people commenting on this thread are either not in tune with present realities or they just want to feign ignorance.

No eastern state has made a challenging push in economic expansion and infrastructural development. If you see the roads, no one will tell you the active life of the road won't be long, but we still cheer them because we are seeing tar on the road.

Kano we are talking about is sharing it's allocation with over 22million people within a space thrice that of Anambra and with a lot of poverty stricken people. We keep on cheering these governors saying they don't have much. How big is Anambra that it cannot build very good roads?

Let me tell you all these, we will keep arguing and having wishful thinking and Kano will continuously getting it right until they become Lagos. Kano has presently surpassed Kaduna in many areas because they are doing things right. Kano now has almost 7 tertiary institutions in the state but you call them educationally backward people.

If you still stay in the east and probably in the West thinking the north is slow in development, then I will give you info first hand that the only thing igbos are ahead (or seem to be ahead) is building residential buildings and nothing more.

In Kano, white men do real business like normal Nigerians. They sell goods and provide services. They have industries, have restaurant and other recreational activities. They speak Hausa like every other indigenes and go about everything like normal but we still feel Kano is Almajiri stricken people.

Yes they have the downsides, but I will tell you this, no road built in this thread and other threads can ever surpass what was built kofa ruwa, kwana sabon and environs. These guys build quality roads and I have seen these roads.

We need to stop giving flimsy excuses because in the long run, another governor will put the same roads in their budget.

State government spent millions of Naira and established a Campus of AICE in Orlu, the campus was closed down and taken back to Owerri immediately after the governor left. Imo Tax Payers money wasted.

Owerri has blackmailed every governor of Imo state to relocate IMSUTH from Orlu to Owerri. Owerri says a teaching hospital is not supposed to be outside the state capital.

Owerri relocated the state library in Orlu to Owerri immediately after the governor who established the library left office. But the state library in Owerri was established by East Central State government based in Enugu.

Thirty seven years after Imo state was created, no State library exists outside Owerri, but the library at Owerri has gone through all sorts of expansion and beautification and reconstruction. What sort of state is Imo?

All three publicly subsidized universities in Imo state are located in Owerri.

All federal and state housing estates in Imo state are located in Owerri. The little housing estate in Okporo Orlu was never allowed to come to fruition.

Imo state governments have built two cities in one Owerri - old and new Owerri, because every Imo state governor is blackmailed to believe the falsehood that a State capital is supposed to be more developed than any other town in the same state. Some Imo citizens even bought the falsehood.
Because of the falsehood, 95% of the landmass of Imo state remain backward, no water, no roads, no drainage system, no modernity, because Owerri's development must first touch the sky.

What sort of state is Imo?

Then blame the governor and not Owerri people. Don't you get?

HOW IMO LOST MONEY SPINNER TOWNS.

When Abia state was carved out from Imo state, present Imo state lost some development infrastructures, including IMSU, to Abia state.

Fears abound that next state creation exercise, either Orlu or Okigwe must be cut off from present Imo state.

That's how Owerri-born governor of Imo state ignored equity and zoning but located IMSU in Owerri which then hosted FUTO, AICE and POLYNEKEDE, he ignored a modern and bigger University Facility he was shown in Orlu at the closed Orlu campus of AICE.

Earlier, a modern campus of AICE built by Mbakwe in Orlu with aid from the World Bank was suddenly closed down immediately after Mbakwe left office.
Students and staff were transferred to Owerri where students literally slept on top of the other in crowded hostels or rented rooms in Owerri.

Then began the unwritten policy of Owerri people that every notable development infrastructure in Imo state must not be allowed to be located outside Owerri zone.
Every governor of Imo state started to be blackmailed to abide by the unwritten policy.

The stunted development of IMSUTH established in Orlu is attributed to the unwritten policy of Owerri that no worthy development infrastructure of Imo state government must be outside Owerri zone.

Gov. Okorocha succumbed fullest to the blackmail from those who want Imo state to have only Owerri as a developed area in the state. He even opened another campus of IMSU in Owerri zone.

Mr man stop fuelling animosity in imo state. If you want to attack the governor, please kindly attack him alone and stop attacking fellow igbos in the state, please. We will have outsiders fighting us, you to will be looking for people to fight too.
